My theory is that's just clever editing in the trailer. I think in the film, the camera moves from one side to the other at some point in the conversation (maybe even multiple times, though that seems hard t pull of organically with the long lingering shots on one side) and the soldier's "Yes Sir" and salute was just inserted where it made sense in the short-form trailer, even though they stem from different points in the original scene.

They held open auditions in Salisbury England for males between 17-40, something like that, over 4 days. My friend and I went to one of them and he actually got into the movie along with a few of my over friends as extras. They cast a lot of extras for this movie so I wouldn't be surprised if all of the soldiers in this were real people.

I have got a great pic of 6 black lads who were in the West yorks. I know there is a habit of inserting black characters that really jar. Adrian Lester in that Mary queen of Scots film for instance. I loved Parasite, but this was the Best Picture of the year. Riveting, gorgeous in every way, all leading to one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen on film. Unreal achievement.

you think 'shit, rats, and rotting bodies' automatically appear once a trench is constructed? I'd imagine trenches newly constructed, prior to conflict, to be pretty immaculate. Not to mention some trenches were used for shorter periods than the front-line standstills that lasted for months. Decadent trenches is probably the most vivid, cliched depiction of WW1. I doubt they'd miss capturing the brutality of war unless it was misplaced for the scene/story.

I was in the army and as I watched the programme all I could think about was my 17-year-old grandfather who enlisted on the 4 August 1914 - He was lucky as his battalion was sent to India. But, bad luck came when they were sent to Mesopotamia and later Afghanistan. Nothing much has changed has it?

What an outstanding movie, brilliant music. I have never felt more immersed in a movie and at-one with the characters. Following the soldiers through the trenches was a scary experience and I was on the edge the entire time. Brilliant skills those behind the camera, who were coordinating between cranes, jeeps, vehicles and on foot, all in one continous scene! Hope it wins the Oscar's.

Yeah, that's just their excellent editing. Like in the "children of men" long takes, you're made to think it's one long 5 minute take but there's actually a few takes in between. They're just edited together wonderfully.

1917 deserves every, single OSCAR on this year´s ceremony! Dear, Academy - you can´t ignore them! Oscar for "Cinematography" goes to: ROGER DEAKINS - no one else, a masterpiece and a complete new achievement in movie making!!!!!
I don't think so! almost all scenes have some fake smell and unrealistic actions
it Appears to be in single shot but its not done in one shot.. They have taken actual long shots and have worked on it to make it seem like one shot movie.. whatever the crew did is an awesome job and this movie is worth watching.. i have seen this movie and i really appreciate the work by the whole team... It deserves an Oscar..
What an outstanding movie, brilliant music. I have never felt more immersed in a movie and at-one with the characters. Following the soldiers through the trenches was a scary experience and I was on the edge the entire time. Brilliant skills those behind the camera, who were coordinating between cranes, jeeps, vehicles and on foot, all in one continous scene! Hope it wins the Oscar's.
If it weren’t for Roger Deakins, I may have tried to follow my short lived dreams of being a famous cinematographer. But he puts me right in my place on every movie he’s ever worked on

I just love movies that stand out in a way or inspire me and create beautiful pictures.
So the cinematography will be like Birdman’s. Just “one shot”. Exciting!
More like 2015's 'Victoria', which unlike Birdman, was genuinely a one shot film done on the third take.

Eric Ellerbrock Ah didn't realise. When he said 'there isn't a get out of jail card' I thought that meant it was a full proper one shot. Regardless it looks great.
Yeah, that's just their excellent editing. Like in the "children of men" long takes, you're made to think it's one long 5 minute take but there's actually a few takes in between. They're just edited together wonderfully.

WOW! This looks incredible, HOW MUCH IS SHOT ON LOCATION!!! Also how much heart and soul is put into this. I will be seeing this in theaters!!!
