That waking up scene was the most "wake up to reality" scene I've ever seen. Waking up on a pool of his own blood with no one to help him, yet he must continue moving forward. This is just terrifyingly magnificent and captures human survival instinct.

Yup. Mud on the scope or moisture or something. The 1917 rifles were accurate when in good condition. Heavy on the recoil, no laser range finder though.

It's interesting how deeply personal all of Schofield's kills are in this movie, no shooting it out with waves of enemy soldiers, he is just locked in these horrible, lonely, desperate struggles with another guy who is probably not much different from him and just trying to survive.

If the German sniper has a Gewehr 98, he has a five round internal magazine, so five shots before he has to reload. There was an extended magazine that was issued to snipers, so the German sniper could have that as an equalizer. The SMLE of the British soldier has a ten round internal magazine, which should give him a significant advantage in a close-quarters fight.

@@Cole-Nano 0:04 He's standing on the bridge squaring up for a jump. He's stock still. "Sniper"'s first shot is a big ol miss.
0:09 Post jump he's hanging on to the bridge and the "sniper" again misses, this time well behind him. After this he only escapes being shot by the bridge supports, demonstrating that the "sniper" had zero reason to have that shot fall so far behind him.
1:00 He comes up the stairs and the "sniper" narrowly misses, showing that the "sniper" has successfully predicted where he will emerge. He then gathers his courage, hauls himself out of cover, raises his rifle and fires while the "sniper" AGAIN misses despite having the location pinpointed and not having to move from cover or raise his rifle. This scenario then repeats itself, but this time he hits the "sniper" before said "sniper" can even fire, again from a clearly more advantageous position.
