Thanks for the informative vid. BUT: what happens next? How doe the crates work in practical terms? Are they ok for all type of soil? What happens with a clay soil, for example? What happens if there is not only surface water (e.g. rain) but also raising water?

Hello, I have a small area of garden that is holding water. Will these work on there own without adding any additional drainage pipes?
fatherkrismas If your garden is holding water then I guess you’ve got clayey soil. I’ve seen these soak aways installed and it’s just become an expensive pond.

What distance should a soakaway crates be from the house and the perimeter of the garden fence i.e your neighbour.
Michael Garfield you should always consider the angle of repose, namely you should ensure the soak away is at least the depth of the soak away and the depth of your footing away from your property. So if your footing is 1 metre deep and your soak away is 1 metre deep, the soak away should be a minimum of just over 2metres from your property. Further away would be preferable.
@@briancole2023 That seems logical. Do you know when this type of soakaway was specified/mandated by building control in the UK? My house was built in 2015 with soakaways; interested to know what system was used. Medium sized building company, could ask them; might even get an answer.

Yes.
But there's little point in doing that. Just connect it to a French drain. Wont cost much ....

You need to make sure you have a catch basin or something to filter out the debris.

@@cardiffpicker1 $15-$50 depending on how big you buy where I am. I haven’t seen anywhere to buy the crates here in the US yet.

glyn scothern It empties into the ground. If it doesn’t then you either need a bigger soak away or you need a different method of drainage.

Yet another over complicated idea from those interfering Americans. Tried and preferred method of simple excavation lined with a permeable membrane, fill with 1/4 inch pea-shingle, lasts a lifetime and at a fraction of the cost.

And at a fraction of the water management volume. I don't know where you live, but it certainly is not South Florida. You could not imagine the volume that rushes out of my downspouts during a normal Summer rain. It runs straight into sand, which is all we have here, and it STILL floods my gravel over sand walkway making it impossible for me to use my back door while it is raining. This is a perfect solution.

Load of high cost bullshit ! Do it the old way with old hard core or gravel ours on our farm is still going fine after twenty odd years service
Gravel provides 30% volume for water storage while these crates provide more than 90% volume for water storage. This is a terrific idea. My soil is not soil, it is sand, and my garden, patios and gravel walkways STILL flood in a normal Florida rain. There is 1" of water standing in one of my gravel over sand walkways and 2" of water standing on my central patio. The volume of water that comes out of my downspouts is simply unmanageable, even when flowing directly into sand. This is a perfect solution. I may wrap it all in an impervious liner, add a pump, and use this harvested rainwater for irrigation--I'd save more than $100 month on my water bill. I wish I had invented this.

Product doesn't solve anything... pea gravel or hard core works absolutely fine especially if you're digging the correct size soak away. Costs more for the customer as well, pointless product.
