Maaan, practicing in the car has been like the only thing I can do for the last 4-5 years. It's where I've been able to put most of my time in, so I feel like without it I wouldn't have improved nearly as much. The walls in my apartment are "paper thin" and my neighbors can hear pretty much everything. I'm also in my car, out and about a lot throughout the day. I usually only don't practice in the car when I'm having to play guitar and sing at the same time though, because it's too cramped to play a guitar in my car. If I had money to soundproof a room in my apartment I would... I also wish I could get vocal lessons so I didn't have to self-teach and watch videos. But I'm a lowly peasant with a job that doesn't pay very well. Lol
Haha, same. I've had to do damn near all of my practice in the car throughout the years. I'll still appreciate seeing your car-vocal snaps though. Fancy seeing you here!

Another thing I was told by a vocal coach was that inside a car, the higher frequencies in your voice are harder to hear because of the acoustics, so you can tend to force them, thus risking good technique. Makes sense, my voice always sounds much darker and quieter there and I do have this notion since I'm used to sing live and know the difference, but some people don't. By the same token (and not totally unrelated), I have to be aware of how my microphone is EQd. I'm a singing drummer and sometimes our sound engineer will try to EQ the cymbals out, so my voice will sound darker as well and I have to be aware of that and not force more brightness into it. This stuff might be good video material, how EQ filtering or acoustics can alter your own perception of your voice.
I was always told I would "try" too hard when in a car because of poor acoustics (as you mentioned in your video). And I was also told that the recirculating air was bad, because it's fairly dry, and could cause damage that way. Would you say there's truth to that?
Well, I enjoy practicing singing in my car but I wouldn't do a lesson in one. I park at a local neighborhood park, and practice with engine turned off. I do this during the day and there are other people coming and going outside so really safety is not an issue. Bonus is that it's so peaceful to see the families enjoying themselves on the lawn while I am practicing. However when the weather gets too hot or cold this will not be a good option.
Another thing to add is the bumps in the road can mess with your distortion too and i nearly passed out while driving from doing vocals so it’s definitely not safe
Also it's hard to keep the right posture sitting in the car. And I think the diaphragm works a little different, doesn't have the full range of motion.
There is some great insight there, good reasons. I admit that I am guilty of singing in the car. I just can't understand why folks seem to run scared. I sing nice songs like Blood Eagle (eagles are so majestic aren't they?) and drive really slow, never above 155.
I practised in my car a lot without ever having any problems whatsoever. I'd wear lightweight headphones and slip one side off to hear myself and what was going on around me. I found I'd be very calm even in long traffic delays as it was an opportunity to practice more. I would still practice out of the car when I could devote all my attention to singing, but the car time helps, especially if you need to practice another instrument as well as voice. As far as being attacked in my car for singing, nothing like that has ever happened to me. Maybe that's an "'only in America'' thing.
It's possible, the States is actually a very violent place with a lot of immediate safety issues wherever you go but if you're a woman anywhere in the world I would say just be very careful - we are often bigger targets than men for a variety of reasons. But yes, honestly this only happened with my American students and part of it is the culture, but still be very careful I would seek a more proper rehearsal space. Some of my folks "never had this happen to them" for several lessons until it did, so, to me it's just not worth the risks.
The heat in a car uses the hot coolant/antifreeze passing through a heat exchanger in the cabin. It has nothing to do with the exhaust. If you're getting exhaust in the cabin, you'll get it with the heat on or off. Also, get that fixed because you should not be getting exhaust in the cabin at all.
Catman Dude Ideally in a new car you won’t get exhaust in the cab but many people don’t know when they’ve had a leak or will actually be naive enough to run their car in a garage to stay warm while they trap the sound (insane, I know but people die each year this way doing other things). The news story about the people having sex was actually a case where I knew one of the first responders and they had a window cracked while idling outside and it got in the windows.
What studio monitors are you using in the background? Also I'm assuming you record singing vocals on the Shure mic in your video, do you sing with that bigger foam pop cover on it? How much of a difference is the bigger pop cover versus the smaller one

I initially watched this video just as I was thinking about driving my car up to the road and getting my scream on (partner and her son are asleep rn). Initially I was thinking the video might be to do with posture or air quality, so I watched it, but it's pretty weird for me to hear that the main legitimate concerns are about things like carjacking, kidnapping and needing to run the engine the whole time for heat. I'm lucky enough to live in the hills around a smallish city in Australia, where it's 26C tonight, and I since present as a 30 something year old looking, male looking person, I reap the privilege that goes with that too. If on the off chance somebody came past, there's an 80% chance they'd cross to the other side of the road because of the weird long-haired guy screaming in a car. 10% they would ignore me, 5% they would ask if I was OK, and a 5% chance they'd come over, offer me a beer and ask what other songs I had (Australia's nothing like the memes, but it kinda is too).. I sometimes think I feel trapped here because I can't sing/scream/blast music whenever I want, but this video was a real wakeup call for me in terms of how lucky I am. It truly saddens me that there are people out there who have had the opportunity to develop skills and express their feelings in a healthy way taken away from them because of the f**ked up societies we live in. If it were up to me, I'd open up a portal in my livingroom once a month so that @Jane Doe @AKMETALHEAD95 and anyone else who wanted to could come and sing, scream, cry, laugh or shout (in a vocally responsible way :D) in a safe and inclusive space, free from the threat of violent a**holes and carbon monoxide poisoning.. My thoughts go out to you all
It is crazy most of my bad examples are things that happened in the States where it is a highly violent place to live for a modernized country. The guy I was talking about is a 38-ish male 6ft tall and he was followed by two men and had to call the police, so even when you "think" you're not a target (which I wouldn't have thought this guy would be) he was by being alone in a dark place. When you're on a video call you're distracted and that makes you a target if people want something from you. It's unfortunate.
@@voicehacks Yeah, for sure. That all changed abruptly when we were going from one club to another and I was king-hit from behind by a group of 3 guys. Stood up and was laid out on the pavement before I could even say anything. They didn't know me, weren't after money, just did it because they could, then legged it across the road into a park. The reason I mentioned in the OP about how I look and where I live was to acknowledge that I have it easy compared to women, POC & many minorities all over the world. It just makes me so fkn angry that this even needs to be a thing. This is probably getting too long winded and full-on for YT comments, but I'll at least leave it on a positive note that in my experience, there's a fk of a lot of good, decent, caring people in the metal scene once people see behind the corpse paint. I remember going to a Fear Factory gig in Brisbane, about an hour's train ride from where I lived. Long story short (cos I tend to go on, if you hadn't noticed haha) group of about 6 of us caught the train up, my mate's GF was in a wheelchair, and throughout the gig, complete strangers moved aside, offered up their spaces, or offered to lift her up to get a better view. After the show, about 50-100 metalheads descended on a local convenience store staffed only by a single Asian woman in her 70s. As the wave of spikes and leather invaded the store, she looked terrified, everyone was rowdy, but respectful & polite. After she'd served the 3rd-4th customer she was asking who we'd been out to see, if the show was good, etc. I remember her saying "You people all look sooo scary, but I like you, so polite! I wish all my customers were like you!". I dunno if it's the same in the US or elsewhere in the world, but if I was in serious trouble among strangers, I'd pick the metalhead over most other randoms to ask for help. #endrant #wayofftopic #thumbsup for the video! I sing and practice while driving, but my left ear was really ringing after the last few times. When I'm hitting high notes they bounce off of the window and really aren't kind to my ear at all. And I don't seem to have a volume control, I try to sing quietly and before I know it I'm going full tilt. I'm thinking about just keeping an earbud in my left ear when I practice.
I'm not going to lie, I really thought it was going to be a health concern, like pass yourself out because you're sitting down (been there, not fun) lmao
Hey there. So been watching your videos for a while now, and got a question if you don't mind. Are there any videos of you singing? I havent actually found any and really wanna hear you sing :( Unless I've just been unlucky and not found them.
In music school our singing teacher always said that we should never sing while driving, but not for the safety reasons of that kind, but beacuse,he said, it is not good for the vocal chords, posture and could make damage to the voice.. Do you know something about it or he was speaking b.s.? Thanks
That's some of the reasons my classical teachers were against it when I mentioned it in the video. It's really impossible to get proper breath support sitting in a modern bucket seat. I've had students tell me its totally different from a car seat to standing. So, yeah it's really tough to get the exact technique to work right the way we sit in a vehicle.
I find a bellybelt makes it very hard to properly breathe with the diaphragm, which almost every teacher chooses as the very first step of anything to learn... Well it does work, but a beginner would need to concentrate far more on breathing... because of the belt he will always immediately switch to chestbreathing as soon as he stops fully focusing on not doing that. That could have played into your teachers opinion...
It seems like every winter for the past couple years my range has worsened. This past winter i was sick for a while and ever since then my voice cracks and such when i try to hit higher notes. This happened last year and I thought it was vocal nodes. Is it just the weather or should i see someone?
It’s always good to double check with a physician, but it sounds like you might want to try running a humidifier especially in the room where you sleep during winter
I like to sing in my car but when I do growls, it makes me light-headed sometimes. I don't know if that's bad technique or what but I stopped doing it.
I had this problem too when I started out growling, it is just an oxygen problem, I mean, when you aren't standing on your feet you can't fully expand your lungs to breath in, and because of that you will feel light-headed.
The response below is basically correct. And you don’t want to get lightheaded while driving. That is risking your life and others also, hence why it’s much more advisable to find a space to rehearse.
Before i watched i thought this was gonna be a joke video. It's not. Um, it would never cross my mind to do a voice lesson in a vehicle. It actually sounds like something that would be extremely uncomfortable. Y'all can ignore a non driving/vehicle owning person talking here. Now i have the urge to do false cord screams the next time i take a uber. lol just kidding.
Hmmmm... there are only 2 ways for me to "sing": Headphones or in the car because thats the only ways to not hear myself because I can make the music loud enough ----- ok, I would not call this rehearsal and you would not call the noises I make singing... (but I understand your point!) ;) ;)
I just practice along with my radio to death metal, I don't just sit in my car it's only when I am going somewhere lol. I had my windows down one day and some dude who was listening tossed a bible in my car. lmao
VoiceHacks He’s saying most car owners are familiar with carbon monoxide poisoning. And you did not need to warn us about something that’s common sense unless you’re aiming for a Darwin Award.

Me: *Laughs in US Army Veteran with :high capacity: yeet cannon with hollow points*
Mary Z: You'll inhale exhaust
Me: *Laughs in professional automotive service technician*
Mary Z: it's too loud
Me: Shit. Ya got me there. I drive full volume and bellowing at the top of my lungs like Master Exploder.
*JOKES ASIDE*
Listen to what this woman says, kids.
You should do a reaction video to Amalie Bruun from Myrkur
I'm not going to lie, I really thought it was going to be a health concern, like pass yourself out because you're sitting down (been there, not fun) lmao
Hey there. So been watching your videos for a while now, and got a question if you don't mind. Are there any videos of you singing? I havent actually found any and really wanna hear you sing :( Unless I've just been unlucky and not found them.
ruclips.net/video/rWFbe2pb_FY/видео.html And there's more if you google the bands I was in or just Spotify them 🤘
@@voicehacks Ooo thank you! :D
Some people don't have another option.
@@voicehacks Thank you for your response :)
What about on the road truckers?
I usually do warmups while omw to work and I sing one or two song omw home after work then I rehearse at home
Phew.. I thought singing while sitting would harm your chords or something like that.
What if my car is parked in my driveway lol
Yahhh baby, Wisconsin kills woohoo!
An excellent video about why you shouldn't live in your car...
Can u do a react/review to sam carters vocals from Architecs... pretty please
So... Just don't be stupid about it and stay aware of your surroundings? Got it.
wait, you can die in your car from carbon monoxide if your AC is on????
Hmmmm... there are only 2 ways for me to "sing": Headphones or in the car because thats the only ways to not hear myself because I can make the music loud enough ----- ok, I would not call this rehearsal and you would not call the noises I make singing... (but I understand your point!) ;) ;)
So theft is the main reason to not sing in a car? Well thats absolutely nonexistent in middleeuropean rural areas...
i sleep in running car
I just practice along with my radio to death metal, I don't just sit in my car it's only when I am going somewhere lol. I had my windows down one day and some dude who was listening tossed a bible in my car. lmao
Breathing in a car is bad? I never knew that
Frankie Bloodshed *In a parked, idling car, engine on (which I specifically mention in the video)
VoiceHacks It makes sense, it’s just something I never thought about until you uploaded this. Thanks for the advice
Yeah I started holding my breath during my commute because of it.
VoiceHacks He’s saying most car owners are familiar with carbon monoxide poisoning. And you did not need to warn us about something that’s common sense unless you’re aiming for a Darwin Award.
That makes things difficult
I disagree!
Pointless video, musicians usually dont have a car. 😂
The most irrelevant reasons to not rehearse in the car. Awful content.
