This lesson helped me understand what it means and how to use the diaphragm when screaming. Not just useful for singing. Became a soldier. Yelling is a thing all the time and you throw out your voice. This lesson prevents that, you become power. And this is also amazing is scream therapy.
I just found you and I love your vids, I've been hearing this for like 15 years now "just use your diaphragm!" And I always thought that made no sense at all cuz how can u not? lol. But the way u explain things makes so much more sense, 360 breathe and 6 pack the gas pedal... perfect. Thank you.
This explains why chest compressions are a part of cpr, it flexes the breathing muscles, same thing with the heimlich maneuver for when someone is choking.
I just want to thank you very much! This has finally taught me what exactly it was I was missing and doing wrong! Been trying to figure it out for about a year now. Thank you so so much!!
It’s interesting bc as both a weight lifter and a singer, I’ve noticed abdominal bracing before heavy squats or deadlifts is similar-until the part where you hold the air while you lift. The initiation feels the same. Bracing, like the kind of inhale she teaches too, also doesn’t necessarily mean pot belly, which interestingly, is a pitfall of lifters too. 🤔
I watched other videos about how to sing and how to fry scream and this one is the only one that actually explains it better than any better than the rest of them and that is what I like about it.
Thank you Mary!! After many years studying singing, you were the only one who made me finally understand how to actually apply the breathing technique!
Thanks for the detailed explanation! You really know what you are talking about in your videos, others are trying to teach the same things but often the "science" behind everything is not clarified - or even understood properly. And I like science 😀
It’s super crucial to know the anatomy of the instrument to know how it works and how to control it! Thanks so much for watching and for the kind feedback. 🤘
oh wow! Thank you very much, I've learned a lot ... I've been trying to explore my vocal capacity, and decided to learn how to scream ... and I was shocked upon learning that , the "pot belly, santa clause" way of inhaling doesn't help you that much, because that's what I was taught back when I was doing a Classical song ... And I actually did what you said , and it is really better, way way better than what I was used to .. Thank you very much!!!!
Thank you sister. Love your lessons. Hope one day sometime or another you hear me and hopefully enjoy it so we can hang out and talk about stuff, life vocal this or that would love to hear from you
Hi Mary! Thanks for your videos. I have a background in musical theatre and classical singing, but I recently (the last two years) started making rock music. So your tutorials on screaming and rasp are really helpful after years of trying to sound as "pretty" as possible. I'm not sure if this is something you can do, but I was wondering if you would ever analyze Manson's screaming (from the 90s), particularly on Antichrist Superstar? I know some of what he does is fry, but there are other techniques that I can't seem to figure out. Thanks again! :)
Thank you for this tutorial, it’s sometimes a struggle to scream and knowing not to do it, because sometimes I scream and then my voice starts straining after constantly doing it
Okay wow this is really helpful the potbelly thing is so misleading and a lot of people I've found taught it that way but I've always had some trouble because while of course I was inhaling, I realized I could also stick out my stomach without breathing so I was always really confused if my stomach expanding was from my breathing or if i was also just tensing my stomach
This is a great tutorial on breathing! This is exactly how my high school choir teacher taught his students how to control their breathe while singing. He even had the students place their hands in the same way you did to feel the breathe. I have never seen anyone else describe it this way until now! I use this same technique when I meditate.
I find that whenever I flex my abs to sing, I actually end up messing my throat up quicker. If I don't do it at all and it happens naturally, I barely get any discomfort at all.
Interesting fact being indigenous to the continent of North America, we are taught to sing using the diaphragm. That's how some of us with practice can reach those screaming eagle highs. Maybe that's why I'm having a bit easier of a time learning these vocals. And to people who want to be rude I'm am not saying we invented this, just saying we are taught to sing like that to save our voice as much as we can.
That’s so cool!!! In my first podcast episode with Sebastien Croteau he talks about a study he was in that looked at some forms of North American indigenous throat singing (in addition to Asian styles and death metal vocalists) and how the throat singing is related quite directly to some of the sounds we make for harsh vocals. voicehackspodcast.com
That is very interesting, yea and I really enjoyed this diaphragm video, it describes how we would sing. And I noticed false vocal cords are a lot easier for me, because that's where I use to push my musical voice out of when singing. Some ceremonies have using singing for days and hours, so singing from the diaphragm really helps save the voice. And it's very easy for me to hit those high pitched we will call it war whooping for the sake of argument. I got at least 18 years of singing under my belt. Again it's easier for me to do false vocal cords, when I try do the other all my sound loses like 50% power. And I'm definitely going to check out that podcast, as I love to hear different perspective on vocals from different people with different backgrounds. I'd really like to have a talk with a Mongolian throat singer.
I was only going to watch a few minutes, ended up watching for another half hour. But I'm on my phone and my eyes feel crossed so hahaha I have the podcast bookmarked so I can pic up where I left off.
Thanks for this. Although in my case, it's a pot belly 😂. I think it's because my core muscles have gotten to a state where they're almost non-exsistent (other signs pointing that direction too). I mean, I CAN get my ribs to ecpand a bit sideways, but it takes a whole lot of work. And when I've watched these videos from several vocal coahces I have understood right (you just made me sure about it) and what I've noticed is that I'm actually breathing like that all the time. My chest or shoulders aren't moving and so on. Now that ab flex is another thing. That I didn't figure from those other videos, but I did find it myself, by trying something else. Although I kind of imagined I'm "pushing" the sound down to my stomach, but it's that ab flex I'm doing (clear voice, haven't really tried full screaming yet, only some explorations on them). Before I was feeling the resonation in my chest, but this way it goes into that diaphragm.
Ma'am would tell me when i inhale where should i focus?? U told us to think When we sing we should hv a picture in our mind like laser beam..my question is when we inhale should we think the same laser beam or focus somewhere else??where to start breath or where to project the inhalation??
Ooooooh.....I get it now. Breathe in as if u were going to form a pot belly...but instead...suck in as if you were going to flex your chest muscles. Like the old black and white body builder pics. They suck in to reduce stomach and add more broadness to chest.

She has been one of my absolute favorite female singers for some years now and I'd love to learn more about her voice on the technical side. :) Thank you!
How do you know if your pushing too hard with the diaphragm? I feel like i need so much power for false chord gutterals to get that rich tone I want but at the same time i start feeling scratchyness in the back of the throat when i do. My voice is fine though.
Hey Mary, awesome video! I have a question for you in regards to warm ups. I'm curious about whether or not Throat singing is a safe warm up for gutteral, and vocal fry techniques? And if you could explain throat singing, so others can better understand why, or why throat singing should be used for warm ups. Thanks!

Did my eyes see correctly? Thanks
Hey Mary I would really like to say that I really appreciate what you do like you have no idea and I hope that you don't mind me being completely honest with you that I would much rather be learning how to breath/sing/scream/etc. With you in person because I personally learn better in person. However if you do not feel comfortable with that? I completely understand. I will still try the Skype Sessions with you!
hey, could you do a video on the band Kublai Khan/their singer Matt honeycutt? i figure, maybe the song "crown of books" or any good quality live performances. if you consider, thanks!

@@arthurkhairullin it's a normal fry screams tho. It's just low because of her physiology. I want ones like CJ from signs of the swarm or Kisuke from Deviloof but by a female
I used to do low frys then I stopped for a couple weeks and subconsciously switched to false cord cuz frys feel pretty unnatural for me at least. And I'm pretty sure shouty sounding vocalists like CJ McMahon and Phil Bozeman use false cord judging by how it sounds and how people can demonstrate it.
Hi, I'm trying to aim for a sound like the vocalist from William Bonney, and was hoping maybe you can shine some light on it? I've tried going about it a few ways but haven't had much luck, and I wouldn't want to accidentally destroy my vocals lol
Do you tuck your tummy slightly when “pushing” air out as if there’s a “belt” below the lower ribs? Or do you “push” down as if going number 2(...sorry no better analogy) I’m confused about this. Thank you if you can help out
This explained the diaphragm very well I just needed some knowledge of if I’m actually doing it properly! I’m a heavier set guy so I can’t really see if I’m breathing in “360” as other videos said the belly thing but I just felt like I was pushing out my stomach when breathing in because that’s what the videos taught. Is there a certain feeling I should have in my lungs to know I’ve done that “360” breathing in?
Hi Mary, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos! They have been invaluable to me. Hopefully one of these days I'll work up the confidence to schedule a Skype session with you. I do have a question though. It seems as though I can only do distorted vocals in my upper and mixed ranged. Am I do something incorrectly? Im not able to take the same grit and rasp that I have in my mixed voice into my chest.
Cody Patterson They kind of come from different places in each sound so they often don’t really go together - in the belting/chest voice the distortion comes from the face tissues more so I would start with some distorted talking and work your way up from there - distortion in the mix and falsetto is more in the false cords
question: when fry screaming i cant do smooth transitions from low/mid to high. widening my mouth does make the scream higher and lower, but to reach the extra highs i need to change my tone placement. my theory is, high screams have a tone placement similar to falsetto, while mids and lows are a similar to belting. am i correct on this? or am i doing this wrong. if its important, im a tenor, and seem to be the most comfortable with mid frys, and never learned false chord.
I think it might be a tone placement thing cuz I can do highs when my mouth isn't that wide and it's like Phil Bozeman or I could open wide and it's like Corpsegrinder.
I have a similar theory when it comes to the correspondence of placement (the area of your mouth where you are projecting your voice at) and the pitch of the screams being somewhat linked to what happens in your clean voice. While I don't think your voice type really matters that much, I think your passagio (the point where your voice shifts its ressonance from the chest to the head, thus marking a change in sound) has an analogue when you scream (even though "perfect" fry screams are technically voiceless). My bridge from chest to head voice starts pretty early (around Bb3) and I can't really belt at all (I think I cap around E4) so there's a very awkward change in sound when I start going higher, the screams lose a lot of "body" and ressonance and I need to change my placement to get a better sound (but I still sound like a bad black metal scream). Weirdly enough I can do even the overtone/"whistle" screams but not the normal "high" screams (like Mitch Luker) because they work in a completely different way.

Can you please use sound normalizer? I have to keep my finger on the mute button for the whole video, overwise your sudden scream can kill my neighbors xD
Stan Ef don’t push down towards the floor like using the rest room - flex the abs below the belly button like a sit-up and clench the pelvic floor like you just ate taco bell and might not make it to the bathroom
MaryZ! You are the best. I've learned a lot about how screaming should feel. Now I know how to breathe better. Well, I still need to put it into practice (watching this before my session). I was doing the pop belly thing for 2 years, thinking I biologically had no diaphragm... Haha. Seriously considering booking a Skype session but I think I'll do that when I've lost all hope in teaching myself

Well, at least with all this I will have a tight vagina and abs, even if I can’t sing. Every cloud, and all that...👌🏻🙄😂
Don't forget about bludder control 😛
@@nostalcholy Brucie Bonus! haha
Thatz weird
Can you please use sound normalizer? I have to keep my finger on the mute button for the whole video, overwise your sudden scream can kill my neighbors xD
So you're basically pushing down below the navel?
Stan Ef don’t push down towards the floor like using the rest room - flex the abs below the belly button like a sit-up and clench the pelvic floor like you just ate taco bell and might not make it to the bathroom
living a lie for years
A widespread lie.
