Thanks for the review! Another very good example of how to sharpen knives on a machine. Clearly a professional!
Very good vid. Thx for the work u put into these.
Appreciate all the great info!
Awesome view! I will definitely want to try this stones in work! Thank you
Learning every time, I’m seriously looking for THE sent of stone. Happy you review them all 😉
Thanks for the information!
Looks like another great set of stones to add to the arsenal, would really look into them if i didn't have my sets of Venev stones already. Expensive but will last for a very long time so really not worth it for your average home user unless your either running a sharpening business or chasing perfection in an edge. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
love it!
Pdt makes some great stones! I’ve had a set of the metallic bonded cbn ones for almost a year now and I can say they are excellent. However, those new venev archer metallic bonded diamond ones from gritomatic have been my favorite recently for normal sharpenings. (I don’t really chase mirrors much anymore) 😂
Dude your Hapstone Premium stones still have the gray factory resin on them. That's why they aren't cutting. If you lap them with silicon carbide powder they will cut just as fast as PDT Resin and Metallic bonded CBN stones. I can literally guarantee it. The Hapstone Premium are also a hybrid organic resin and metallic bond mix. They are not pure metallic bond.
All that said, the PDT Resin Bonded CBN are by far my favorite stones of all time. So I agreed wholeheartedly with you and ones tried all the others you mentioned as well. Great video thanks!
Just out of curiosity but what grit of silicon powder do you use?
@@fuzzynuttz5092 Different for every stone but never use a higher grit powder than the stone itself.
I’m glad you said something because I just got the Premium Hamptone set I used them and as they worked fine , they didn’t cut that great with less feedback than resin bonded , I have sic powder to cut them down hopefully there better , do you recommend a certain grit sic for the certain grit stone ? Thanks
@@EdgeStoneKnives will keep that in mind

Хороший, наглядный и полезный обзор. Спасибо автору за проделаную работу, а также производителю и поставщику камней за новые и интересный камни. Автору удачи в работе и новых интересных обзоров.
CBN IS REALLY GOOD
I agree 100% about having to be careful with how sharp the edges actually get I thought I had sharp knives before, until I started using free-handed ceramic Stones now I have to be careful because just the blade bumping my finger I won't even realize it, not even have felt it, and look down and I'm flayed open leaking everywhere smh
I finally got a vitrified diamond stone. You should try to get one too.
I ended up getting the complete 11 $tone $et of these PDT plate$. Huge investment.
I really like them. The 15,000 PDT will leave scratches over the Edge Pro 4k stones.
Poltava uses the Gost rating system so be aware. Lifetime stones. Very fast cutters.
I use Ferric Chloride to refresh them. Do not use SIC powder on these stones per Poltava.
Not great for a mirror polish. Use resin stones for that. Cheers.
Great informative video Jerad. Bang!
HMM so the company is who reccommended the carbide powder but i will take what you said. i notice the deeper scratches as well, however i notice up to the 3k is extremely fine, it seems the 5 and 15k are the ones with that
@@NeevesKnives The SIC has a tendency to embed in the softer metallic bond. Not a big deal unless your chasing a mirror.
Never - Ever "use electrolysis or ferric chlorine to maintain CBN stones" BECAUSE the factory not recommended it !!! You'll be kill your CBN metallic bond stone, but it's up to you, my friend
What a coincidence, I also just found out about CBN recently and wanted to try them out. Thank god I got means to order them in Ukraine, because you guys, will probably make them out of stock on other platforms after this video. Also glad Poltava Diamond Tools is gaining popularity, they really deserve that!
I don't think you can just compare the thickness of different brands of resin bonded stones without also taken into consideration how quickly they wear, which depends on the type of bonding agent used. You can't use a stone to condition metal bonded stones (but it will help clean them). You have to use ferric chloride, or you can use electrolysis, as shown by Knives Switzerland.
I have three of the dual sided venev dragon stones…100/240, 400/800, & 1200/2000. Are you saying these are not as good? For my kitchen knives I usually never go beyond the 100/240 stone.
I have been on the fence watching PDT on Ebay. So glad you ended up making a video about the different stones. Still a noob with sharpening but slowly figuring it all out.
well i have a ton of videos for you to watch
Keep in mind the American vendor on ebay has thicker base plates than the factory Poltava. As hard and flat as these Poltava'a are, I still check angles between every plate swap.
@NeevesKnives Yeah been watching your channel for a few years now. I have the TSPROF Britz pro with the TSPROF diamond and some Gritomatic diamond. Time to upgrade since my collection keeps getting bigger and bigger with higher HRC steels.
@JohnDoe-zb7dz Yeah Ebay PDT shows 4mm plates with 3mm grit. I'm not rushing till I learn what is what. If I'm spending 5-600 on stones I want to make sure I know what I'm buying.
@S4Detroit as you should. And depending on how much sharpening you are doing getting the 3mm might nor be worth it, the 1.5 lites might be the way to go, put it this way I've had my 2mm resin bonded diamonds for years now and most have barely even started showing wear, smaller stones will burn up faster than large but are still going to last a very long time, also you can mix and match
Could you please test out the block knife sharpener
I'm pretty sure that hapstone stones and pdt stones are produced at same factory at Poltava, Ukraine. Actually PDT is Poltava Diamond smthng i think.
Poltava Diamond Tools. Somebody posted that they talked with Hapstone and the rep said that PDT does not make Hapstone stones or at the very least they used a different binder. Theirs are metal/organic bond which is different than the PDT stuff.
@@Riyame hm... Interesting.
I have the 1x6 Venevs... and they work great.. but this "new" manufacture looks promising.. But I have expensive tastes.. I want the 8x3's so Like the unobatanium Venenvs.. its going to take awhile
What has been your experience with Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stones? They're actually in stock. These PDT metallic cbn stones only have a few options in stock.
would like to see you check out the Aldim CBN stones their 200% concentration stones
They don’t have the freehand bench stones on there site were do you get them?
They're nice but they're pricey. I can't justify buying a set when i have a complete set of Venevs (theyre ok) and Edge Pro diamond matrix (which are my favorite). If you're a professional sharpen (or have more money than you know what to do with) i can see justifying buying them. For me, what i have is fine.
Been using a 800 grit boron nitride stone (its like a mix of a waterstone and ceramic) and irs awesome. Cuts fast, and with either 6 or 3 micron strop (i use 3M micropore medical tape or balsa) gives a great toothy and sharp edge.
What is the right (dressing stone ) ??
I wonder how many knives can you sharpen with the little fixed sharpener stones?
CBN or Diamond
Depends on the grit, since lower grit stones will take more wear than the higher ones, but as a minimum likely thousands of knives.
Dear Jerad,
When comparing CBN vs. Dimond, you forgot to indicate the MAIN DIFFERENCE between CBN and Diamond - the CBN is "GROWED" in the laboratory, therefore it has smooth and uniform angles in the range, which can be adjusted when “growing” CBN crystals. In contrast to Diamonds, which are obtained by “breaking” diamonds on a press, which leads to the fact that the diamond edges have DIFFERENT ANGLES, and the range is NOT ADJUSTABLE, which leads to deep scratches on the knife blade that are difficult to remove!
To me at least, it seems that Venev stone still far and away the best option for most people. For $55 (and even for $75 which is what I got them at) you're getting 2 stones that will basically last forever or damn near close to it while getting some of if not the best edges possible. Like that's half the price for VERY similar performance. Maybe I'm missing something but that's just how I'm seeing it.
I have Venev, Nanawa, a Chinese knock off and although I love the Venev and Nanawa, there is NO comparison in the quickness and bite they produce. Not even close.
The higher grit Venev's do give a nicer mirror finish However if show is what your into. ;
@@michaell397 I mean I use an atom of 140 to start off then progress through venevs
I been screaming it for almost 2 years now! Poltava Met binded cbn is the best stones on the market next to super vitrified diamond.
Better than venev?
I am completely confused! What do purchsse, that would be compatable with a work sharp pro?
Get the .06.x4in stones
I average about 25 knives a week, mostly kitchen from a variety of manufs. I have been using Atoma plates on a K03. I buy the 8x3 replacement plates, cut them on a bandsaw and finish the edges for application to my 1x6 aluminum plates. Saves a lot of $ this way, but I do still replace them quite often, especially the 600. I don't often find a need to chase a mirror and I have always seen it as subjective anyway, so the 4 grits Atoma produces along with stropping with Gunny 1um is satisfactory. Now you have me wondering if the metallic bonded cbn might be more cost-effective by cutting profiling time and the longevity of the stones. Your thoughts, or anyone else?
The metal bonded CBN will last SIGNIFICANTLY longer. Likely thousands of knives very easily (for even the low grit stones). That being said, you might want to keep a single very low grit Atoma plate around for when you have a serious profiling job to do as they will cut much faster than the CBN stones.
CBN metalic bond 600 grit will work for 5-7 years if you will sharp 100 knives per month
@@Riyame 👌
@@user-ug2gl7ls2j 👌
What kind of stone can you sharpen a ceramic knife with?
You want to use very fine diamonds, like 1200 grit and higher
Yeah take a Para 3 in S45VN and sharpen it to 800 grit on a work sharp professional precision adjust. Once complete, run it over 4 different diamond emulsion strops, going from 6 micron, to 3 micron, to 1 micron, and finally 0.5 micron. The edge on that Para 3 will absolutely cut you to the bone if you make a mistake!
Dear Mr. Jerad,
You made mistake, Sir, in this video about 3mm aluminum plate for metallic bonded CBN-stones😊.
GUYS REMEMBER PDTools factory mounted EVERY THIER CBN and Diamond only to 4mm aluminum plates, ONLY!
Attention (!), if the blank is 3mm, YOU bought out-off-market OR fake stones - NOT FROM the factory of PDTools, UKRAINE 🇺🇦
I have an authentic PDT stone bought from Gritomatic. It has a 2.87mm aluminum plate and overall thickness of 6.35mm
These have been around a long time no?
Have you tried lapping the Hapstone CBN stone to see if that brings up the performance?
yes i did, but im going to continue to test things out
@@NeevesKnives I would be interested to hear the results. I have had a 120 grit Poltava CBN stone for a while now so I just bought a set of Hapstone Premium CBN since a store in Canada is now a dealer so I don't have to deal with massively inflated prices, currency fees, or shipping costs.
@@NeevesKnives I just got my Hapstone CBN stones in. It seems they are made differently than the PDT stones. The gray layer on the Hapstones appears to be some kind of release agent, likely graphite or molybdenum. I cleaned it partially off of a single stone so far with alcohol, wanted to get some pictures with the digital microscope before going farther. Having it on the top of the stone means that both sides of the stone were likely molded so the top of the stone is completely flat and any CBN will be pushed in so they will need to be lapped, some fairly heavily to expose a decent layer of abrasives. That is why they don't seem to be cutting at all. My stones feel very smooth, the 400 and up are nearly glass like, with only the occasional abrasive particle able to be felt in the 150 and below
This did not need to be done with my PDT stone. Not sure if they do that in the factory, or if they are just not molded on both sides resulting in one side being usable out of the box.
Just thought you might want an update and my thoughts on it.
Guys, the HAPSTONE HAS NEVER MADE, DOES NOT, AND WILL NOT MAKE sharpening stones because he does not have the equipment for this!!! They buy these bars either from the Kyiv plant or in China, glue them onto aluminum bars and sell them under the Hapstone brand! They are great, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to say that Hapstone is a manufacturer, they are just good marketers 🙂
What Stone is best for cold steel SRK in 3V
diamond of some kind for sure
if your tyring freehand then go with a diamond plate from atoma or ultra sharp or dmt, i recently did a video on beginner sharpenign tutorial
I notice it's mentioned that the Hapstone parts are from Ukraine, but I didn't hear that the Venev are from Russia. Pretty good stones, but I won't be buying any more because of that.
Yes Venev is a russian manufacture. And PDT manufacture is from Ukraine, city Poltava. Hapstone is from Ukraine city Sumy. Ukrainian manufacture much better 😎
Venev 8 by 3 says not in stock?Who has them?
Did you check Hapstone? Otherwise you might find them in the NeevesKnives store, but that's what I mean they are becoming harder and harder to find I'm not sure if restocking will happen
@@NeevesKnives I found one on eBay through Hapstone seller. 290$ ouch! Have to rethink it. Woodturners has a Cbn stone too.
Did you check for your statements in your video? One minute: "Resin bonded diamonad stones will wear out very quick when sharpening super steels", next minute "Resin bonded diamond stones still will last a very long time" - Maybe less words per minute and more thinking what you want to tell the audience!
I have a theory. Looking at the specs from both websites I believe that PDT makes the bonded stones for hapstone. Don't look at the grit rating, Look at the micron ratings and the materials used. Both companies are in Ukraine. Hmmmmmmmmmm
slow down
😇👍
my first cbn stone was from spyderco, the quality was garbage
Nah man. Birdie T2 stones are the top of the line. Doesn’t get better than T2 stones.
I had a heavily damaged Buck 119 from a family member I needed to profile and grind a few chips out of. Went halfway through a low grit Boride SiC stone. Right after I got a cbn stone for low grit work. My 120 PDT metal bonded CBN has done more work and hasn't even needed to be flattened yet.
It literally says made in ukraine on the graphic....
The company is Poltava in Ukraine. The seller of the stone in the USA is called USA Market.
@@Riyame Correct, but the backing plates are thicker.
USA-Market is the only one who ask PDT to produce stones with a blank 4mm and in colour.
One round worth of cardio from Paddy. Not good enough, Scouser!
😇👍
