Been freehand sharpening for years it's the way I was taught and learned and I think it's way more rewarding than having to have something hold the knife and angle for you!

I'm pleased to see the jump cut edit after the laughter of stones and clamps 😂😂😂 You absolutely had some bidness to stand on 🤙🏼 well done Jerad
I will never get tired to say that I love my pocket sharpening stone, which I can take everywhere! 🥰 And it's the Fällkniven CC4. Love it for honing especially, but it can also fix a chip and you can also strop on its sheath!
As a psychiatrist and knifenut I can confirm the relaxing and therapeutic effect of freehand sharpening ❤ I tried two fixed angle sharpening systems in the past but I quit them almost immediately. The focus, joy, feeling of reward and fullfilment from having sharper and sharper knives done freehand is for me as a human being priceless.
I will not give up my KME, Hapstone, TSPROF sharpeners for some Blades.. but because of Outdoor5s and this page.. I am getting really better at freehand sharpening
I'm very glad my father and grandfather taught me how to use a wet stone. I have upgraded to diamond stones that are not super expensive but very nice in my opinion. Thank you very much for sharing brother
Great video!! Loved it. I once had a conversation with James Gibson. As we chatted he was freehand sharpening a young man's knife. Inside of 45 minutes, Mr. Gibson had put a razor's edge on a Scandi grind fixed blade and a flat grind folding knife. Thank you for the video. The simple stones and practice. Keep up the content.
I’m 66 and grew up hand sharpening since I was 9 and got a case knife and two Arkansas stones. I love the TSProf K03 and Venev Orion stones which I also use in a holder for freehand sharpening. I mountain bike in the Maine forests and carry a couple knives and basic survival stuff and that work sharp hand sharpening tool with diamond plates works great. You know what else I carry? A sharpie, and have used it because I’m not guessing any more than I need to.😊 the Axicube👍 I have removed stones from my guided system and put them in a table holder to get the tip and heel.
I always thought of it like this: Fixed Angle = Lower skill floor, Sharpens faster, easier to learn, more forgiving of mistakes Freehand = Higher skill ceiling, Able to sharpen an edge with more precision, is more cost efficient and more versatile I have a fixed angle system. It works for me, but many of the knives I sent to you and got that Neeves freehand special came out far sharper than what my work sharp was capable of doing. Only took me roughly 20 minutes to sharpen but I bet it took you half an hour minimum to put your edge on the same knife. I think for cheaper knives or frequent users a fixed angle will work but for when you want to put on the best edge possible nothing beats free hand in the hands of an expert sharpener. Because as you said the knowledge can go anywhere with you but a fixed angle system won't fit in the pocket like you demonstrated in the video.
I'm honestly stealing the vertical air punch as a stress management technique, Thanks Jerad. Also very sage advise, I'm trying to learn free hand finally and your vids have helped so much.
And down the rabbit hole, we go... KME then TSPROF Blitz 360, then TSPROF K03 Finally, back to free-hand sharpening, it is coming along, and I'm having a good time picking up the skill. Thanks to your video and the membership live tutorials, my sharpening game is rapidly improving. THANK YOU! 😎👍

Hesitant at first to jump on the spin bike trend, but the YESOUL totally blew me away. The seamless riding experience paired with the screen mirroring tech keeps things super engaging during those tough sessions. Now I'm cycling through my go-to documentaries and soaking up knowledge while breaking a sweat. Feeling fitter and way more enlightened!
One negative you didn't mention regarding stones is skill decay. If you only have a small set of knives and your frequency of use is low enough that you don't need to hit the stones that often is very hard to "keep your eye" in and if you have a break in sharpening that muscle memory can be lost. Sharpening is not like riding a bike, it might be after 5 years of sharpening daily but for those of us that maybe need to sharpen a knife once a month is a significant obstacle in learning free hand.

I’m sure the content of this ad wasn’t Yesoul’s idea, but the fact that they support your freedom as a creator tells me they have the kind of integrity that so many businesses lack.
Yeah it was definitely my idea but I did run it by them to see how they would respond. But I think it's important to stay genuine imagine the people you watch not entertaining the very people they actually like or agree with in real life. The hell with that
Work Sharp WSBCHBSS Benchstone Knife Sharpener is what I use 90% of the time, although I have the Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener Tool and the Work Sharp Ken Onion Knife Sharpener Tool. The latter two have never been used quite yet.
I have been freehanding for as long as I have collected knives. Around 15 years. While I can do the freehand sharpening, I'm always looking to make it better and try new things to achieve it. Top notch video and I love your vids. Thanks.
the work sharp comes with everything you need to start sharpening with there supplies, however the system from hapstone is better because it allows you to use any stones you want

I think everyone needs to learn freehand for most of the reasons you said but i only sharpen the kitchen knives 3 ro 4 times a year and while i used to get mirror edges when i sharened evey week. With my edgepro set up i can get mirror edges faster and less wrist pain.
Dude we grew up so similar. It’s weird hearing your story cause it sounds like you’re talking about me😅 anyway love your videos I’m glad you made a life for yourself with honor. Happy to be a part of it man.
Yes you are 100% correct. Myself I use mainly japanese water stones for kitchen knives and workshop tools but I do have bench oil stones, DMT diamond stone and few small sticks stones. In my opinion good quality extra coarse diamond plate and medium grit soaking type japanese water stone is essential to have in the kitchen and garage, but it is good to have fine stone as well. My high grit stone is 4k and I don't think I need anything finer than that. I started with 1x2x8 bench stones but I quickly moved to bigger, wider stones. So I prefer large single grit stones instead of small or double sided. However small stones can be used as sharpening sticks which are useful in some situations.
A very fun vid, shootout to kara for making an appearance. Biggest difference i find in the two is with freehand being able to balance what the edge looks like easier especially on a poorly ground knife. I use both freehand and a system on occasion. One of the big boneses you get on a fixed angle is the ability to stop at any time and pick up where you left off even a day later and continue sharpening that knife as long as you leave it set up in the system, no guessing what side you were working on or what stone you were using at the moment you stopped. For portable i keep a worksharp guided field sharpener in my bag when traveling but i also keep a set of DMT credit card sharpeners in my wallet and I'm able to touch up any edge with those. They come with a Medium, Fine, and Extra Fine grits for touch ups on the go. They also double as files if i ever need them too, as in removing a burr or sharp Corner on something. The amount of options available for sharpening supplies is growing all the time including diamonds, regular stones, strops and compound, systems or free hand stuff. Nice to see innovation as well going strong. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
I suck at sharpening knives freehand. I've been doing it for almost 30yrs on just about any stone you can think of. I can get a sharp edge but not razor sharp. I must have developed a flaw in my technique. Always one side ends up better than the other. It really makes me feel like a failure. The best I can do is maintain the factory edge with ceramic rods and a strop.
Same. Watch all of Jared's sharpening videos and something will click. I bought decent diamond stones and use his tips to keep a consistent angle. Much improved. I prefer to keep the factory edge as long as possible.
Make sure you have diamond plates always start with a low grit like 300 or less, you can get an angle finder If needed like the one I showed in the beginning of video, watch a few of my vids I show some awesome tricks to getting great edges
Hey Jarod, this is definitely my favorite channel. Between you and Outdoor55 the education has really upped my game. What is your opinion on the Edge Pro line of sharpeners ? I have an Apex and am looking at upgrading.
Great Vid! Purchased a Wasabi knife sharpener and i always have a time compensating for the angle differance of the sharpening system when you flip the knife. The angle changes by 1.7 and i have to readjust. I can get a beautiful mirror v-grind edge now that i know how to adjust for the systems weaknesses.🎉🎉
I appreciate the time and effort of this video. I will probably stick to fixed sharpening because I already have too many things I'm having to learn and do (IT, management, controls + home stuff with plumbing, electrical, and drywall (uggh)), but I can definately appreciate the craft of hand sharpening if I had the time, lol
All I know is freehand sharpening, but I appreciate people making these tools, so I can send people that way when they want me to sharpen their knife for free. lol "It's really simple, you can absolutely do a very good job with it as a total noob; you will like it!"
Which fixed angle system is your favorite? I have a kme and while it's ok I wouldn't mind upgrade to something that can use bigger stones. Also, what diamond plates do you recommend for beginner freehand?
The only diamond stones I will ever buy (also currently use) are Venev diamond stones. Venev Industrial Diamond stones, and bonded diamonds are preferred over coated diamonds. Unlike coated diamonds, bonded diamonds spread the diamond grains over their whole volume, and work in similar fashion to conventional abrasives. Only bonded diamonds can be flattened, lapped, repaired or refreshed. Bonded diamonds are universal and able to sharpen any steel and they have much better feedback and a longer lifespan in general (when taken care of/maintained properly). This is your destiny; let the stones be with you.
Ceramic usually are 2k plus usually 2500 to 5k grit, there's more aggressive ones like the medium from spyderco which is like 1200. But usually Ceramic are around 2k plus. The problem using them on work sharp is it's to big of a jump you need multiple stones between the last stone and the Ceramic to get the most out of it
It gets progressively harder to sharpen consistently the lower your edge angle goes, so for those occasion (reprofiling pocket knives) a fixed angle sharpener is great. Otherwise freehanding is faster and the larger stones dish slower.
Took me a week to learn and i only sharpened like 15 times at mot so far and i only sharpened like 5 times in the first week and i got it after that so free hand is easy to me but i get it tho
To some it will come far easier than others, especially if you used tools etc throughout your life. Most people it would take almost a year to get a perfect flat bevel, most think they have flat bevels but dont
Free hand you gotta have a skill to do it and know when to move to the next stone and but mainly patience and skill Guided system you just clamp it on and put some sharpie and see which angle goes but also you can’t bring this giant system with you to the woods or camping in the bush
Hello Jerad, I don't what to choose and buy to sharp my knives, one is the fixed angle Work Sharp system but I don't know with how many stones it cames. The second is the electric Ken Onion Work Sharp with different belts, but I'm scred this belts eats the blade steel so fast. The third variant is to buy 1000-3000 grit stone. Give me an advice please.
Thanks Jerad I learned from the best ! I do both , but I prefer fixed angle , BTW The TSProf K03 pro has a convex attachment you can adjust the degree of convex from slight to full 💥
Yeah I actually have that attachment, but I've yet to have gotten the kind that I think could possibly be the best, however I didn't consider zero grinds which could possibly be a cool discussion soon
You can try Venev, or The new metal bonds from USA market linked in description, check my hapstone link for venev 3x8 you want the 1200 which is 5k or get the PDT Metal bonds from USA market
@jan5boy889 then your problem is you need some fine grit stones, in-between the ones you have, you could get a venev 400 combo or something else around 1200 to 1500 grit, your 800 is a 3500 grit and the 1200 is 5k grit, so jumping from 600 to 3500 won't work you need an actual 1200. Jfyi venev uses f rating which is different than ours. The small number they use is micron like the venev 1200 is 3/2 micron
I'm sure at some point in history lumberjacks debated felling trees with axes and saws vs powered chain saws. Nothing wrong with efficiency, nothing wrong with slower old school ways. Personal preference.
Advertisers don't tell you what you can or can't do. They tell you that they don't want their ads next to this or that. That is their absolute right. Freehand vs (good) system System will probably give you the best ever edge, to a level that you cannot reach freehand , which is a level that remains to be proven useful. Freehand is less expensive, it is absolutely good enough and you can practice it on a pinch on many different make shift surfaces, or dollar store stones if need be (say you're not at home and want to sharpen a kithcen knife for a friend , you can do it to a good useulf level with any kind of crap stone that you buy in wallmart or whatever, not even talking about sharpening on stones found in the garden) Free hand teaches you a skill
Okay so here is my thing. I cannot freehand forwards to save my life. However, I have learned how to strop by hand and I'm able to hold the exact same angle doing so. I have a DLT ultimate 4 sided strop 8x2 three sides are covered in leather hardwood. On each end there are pieces of wood that I can unscrew with a butterfly nut. Designed to hold strips of sandpaper that are 8 by 2s and by sharpening edge trailing for stropping strokes. I can achieve killer edges and hold my angle doing so. And then I followed up on 6 CBN strops. 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, and .5 micron for a mirror edge. But my sandpaper progression is 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 before I use the CBN strops. I don't know why it works it just does. I know you said in one of your videos you don't recommend Sharpening backwards and I don't understand why because that's essentially what I do with the sandpaper. And it works. Sorry this is so long I'm just trying to learn everything I can.
That was such a bitchin’ ad read, Jerad! I appreciate the time you put into making and editing these videos for us. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. You rock, dude! Fuck Peleton!
It took me many, many years and dozens of "stones" to learn freehand sharpening and I'm pretty decent at it now. Muscle memory is key and maintaining the angle. But I can get hairsplitting results these days.
I’m decent free hand sharpening but it’s not like I can perfectly set my bevels to specific angles. I especially have issues when a knife comes with poor factory bevels or if I screw one up. I plan to get a hapstone rs. I will still freehand for quick touchups and stuff and to keep my skills. Sharpening isn’t really a hobby of mine, so I’ll never put the time in to reach the level of consistency that id like. I also feel like I end up oversharpening by the time I get a near whittling edge with consistent bevels.
Great summary, but I will disagree about the inability to achieve a semi-convex on a fixed angle system. There are a couple ways to go about it. One is to simply clamp the stone at a slight angle. Another method is to use a curved rod, which are available for some systems.
For the life of me I can't get my knife shaving sharp using a fixed angled system, but 3 minutes free handing on a stone I can shave my face with my knife, i dont understand 🤷♂️
She shows up every now and again. She just isn't in front of the camera, but a few times you can hear her disembodied voice yelling at SuperSteelSteve about cut testing accuracy. But if you want to get Kara involved in the chat just start talking about zoo animals and video games and she'll be enticed to chime in.
I love your videos, and I didn't think they could get any better. Then, the hot beverage ☕️ service from your own personal barista added the chef's kiss👩🍳❤. She should be in every video. 😂
I modify the blades of the knives by planing the blades, in my videos I show how the knives become sharp, to sharpen I use a much more effective technique than stones which makes the blades as sharp as razor blades. and I have the sharpest knives in the world.
I would have to check it out to see what you mean, sounds like a zero grind which is the sharpest, however it's not as practical for edc use for many reasons, however it can be dependent on the geometry etc.. but I'm not sure if that's what you are talking about
@@NeevesKnives you can try with an old knife, you have to grind the blade that ends at zero and remove the bevel which becomes like the razor blade which is at zero, to sharpen it you have to do it as you do with a flat blade razor on a sharpener and slide without tilting it otherwise you take it off instead of sharpening it. try it and see that you have a knife handle and a cutter blade. 👍
FUN FACT: Cane sugar is just less refined sugar, not really different kind of sugar. 🫡 I remembered this because I heard "raw cane sugar", which triggered my German. 😱
What fixed angle sharpener would you recommend for someone who’s just getting into sharpening? I free hand, but people ask me all the time what kind of sharpener I use, and when I tell them I free hand they say they can’t do it and proceed to ask what kind of fixed angle sharpener I would recommend, and I have no idea.
@@NeevesKnives nice. I’ve seen that one, and I’ve seen some kme and then some more that are even more high dollar like Wicked Edge. My lord a house payment for a sharpener.
Any concave perfectionists here straight out the gate or is this just me. This is coming from a person who bought a tormek wetstone grinder and cannot comprehend why a jig won't always be better 10/10 times. Btw yes i would throw money until i get what i want to see in an edge (wood turning tools got me onto this 🤷)
Replace the word "stone" with the word "tool" and that misunderstanding will go away. 😆🤣 Good Job on the comparison. I use machines to set edge angles, and restore scallops. I use freehand for everything else. Knowledge is power.
Part II…Vid just gets better n better. Close ups..hell yeah. Political stuff…no nee no. Great edits. Great knowledge…Great shirt. Freehand Freehand Freehand. Though I would like to get a System. Maybe. For Sara
I have a shapton 220grid and a fallkniven dc521 after 5 sharpenings I got it in my hand and the blades are quite sharp and I can cut through a paper towel (not perfect but i working on it )
If I could choose between getting 3 knives (not necessarily expensive ones) vs getting a professional sharpener, I'd learn to sharpen free hand, because I'm not a collector, and I won't investment in a professional sharpener just for 3 maybe 5 knives that I don't care about ruining, just getting them in working condition!
@@NeevesKnives Right now I'm comfortable holding the stone In my hand, and I find it easier to move the stone and slightly tilt it, to accommodate the edge shape when going to the tip, instead of moving the hand with the knife!
@@DanielDan-rg9zw yes thats exactly how i do my convex edges and how i teach to do convex movement with both stone and blade while trying to stay perfect
@DanielDan-rg9zw yeah that is a technique I try to teach as well, I believe it can be an easier way to teach Sharpening with alot of people, since you can bring it right to your eye view
Why I only see people sharpen pocket knives with these expensive tsprofs and other systems? Why nobody is sharpening 8 inch chef knifes? Are these systems not ideal for kitchen chef knives?
OMG your wife's comments was hilarious if I could like it again I would. Love your videos your and outdoor55 have the best sharpening videos.

Amen bro! Thanks to you I am all freehand now, my tsprof is collecting dust on a shelf 😁
Angle the stone and maintain the knife parallel to the table. The easiest way to sharp freehand.
Yeah I’m pretty good at freehand and teach all different ways
Have you used the edge pro sharpening system? I've enjoyed using it. Just curious on your thoughts of it.
No I haven't I used something similar but I have tested alot of systems
All I know is freehand sharpening, but I appreciate people making these tools, so I can send people that way when they want me to sharpen their knife for free. lol
"It's really simple, you can absolutely do a very good job with it as a total noob; you will like it!"
I'm doing my top 5 very soon
Your glass edge is amazing
Hey brother how do you like the Work Sharp ceramic rod? Any idea what the grit is, I can’t seem to find it
Ceramic usually are 2k plus usually 2500 to 5k grit, there's more aggressive ones like the medium from spyderco which is like 1200.
Bro I would have never guessed you used to be 450lb!!! You look great! Keep it up!!!
I was just joking lol
Yeah I wasn't sure but the picture looked legit 🤣
Took me a week to learn and i only sharpened like 15 times at mot so far and i only sharpened like 5 times in the first week and i got it after that so free hand is easy to me but i get it tho
To some it will come far easier than others, especially if you used tools etc throughout your life. Most people it would take almost a year to get a perfect flat bevel, most think they have flat bevels but dont
I built a holder so I can use 6" Venev stones on my Lansky..lol. It works great, but I will get a TS prof at some point.
Free hand you gotta have a skill to do it and know when to move to the next stone and but mainly patience and skill
Guided system you just clamp it on and put some sharpie and see which angle goes but also you can’t bring this giant system with you to the woods or camping in the bush
Thank you. Very helpful, as I'm still have issues with freehand after 7 months and have been considering fixed angle.
Hello Jerad, I don't what to choose and buy to sharp my knives, one is the fixed angle Work Sharp system
but I don't know with how many stones it cames. The second is the electric Ken Onion Work Sharp with
different belts, but I'm scred this belts eats the blade steel so fast.
How do u like the worksharp professional? Worth the 250?
I have ultra sharp diamond plates and 1 resin bonded but they only go to 3k grit what do you recommend for 5k grit
You can try Venev, or The new metal bonds from USA market linked in description, check my hapstone link for venev 3x8 you want the 1200 which is 5k or get the PDT Metal bonds from USA market
@@NeevesKnives my ultra sharp is 300 600 and 2200 my venev resin bonded is the 800/1200
@jan5boy889 then your problem is you need some fine grit stones, in-between the ones you have, you could get a venev 400 combo or something else around 1200 to 1500 grit, your 800 is a 3500 grit and the 1200 is 5k grit, so jumping from 600 to 3500 won't work you need an actual 1200. Jfyi venev uses f rating which is different than ours. The small number they use is micron like the venev 1200 is 3/2 micron
@@NeevesKnives ooh I see now
@jan5boy889 the 800 is around 3 to 3.5k and the 1200 is more around 5k
I'm sure at some point in history lumberjacks debated felling trees with axes and saws vs powered chain saws.
Nothing wrong with efficiency, nothing wrong with slower old school ways. Personal preference.
Advertisers don't tell you what you can or can't do. They tell you that they don't want their ads next to this or that. That is their absolute right.
Freehand vs (good) system
System will probably give you the best ever edge, to a level that you cannot reach freehand , which is a level that remains to be proven useful.
Freehand is less expensive, it is absolutely good enough and you can practice it on a pinch on many different make shift surfaces, or dollar store stones if need be (say you're not at home and want to sharpen a kithcen knife for a friend , you can do it to a good useulf level with any kind of crap stone that you buy in wallmart or whatever, not even talking about sharpening on stones found in the garden)
Free hand teaches you a skill
Great video !
Very interesting Good content 👍👍👍
That was such a bitchin’ ad read, Jerad! I appreciate the time you put into making and editing these videos for us. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. You rock, dude! Fuck Peleton!
I appreciate that, I have some Bangers coming the next couple weeks
It took me many, many years and dozens of "stones" to learn freehand sharpening and I'm pretty decent at it now. Muscle memory is key and maintaining the angle. But I can get hairsplitting results these days.
Very nice
Good job Jared
I’m decent free hand sharpening but it’s not like I can perfectly set my bevels to specific angles. I especially have issues when a knife comes with poor factory bevels or if I screw one up.
I plan to get a hapstone rs. I will still freehand for quick touchups and stuff and to keep my skills. Sharpening isn’t really a hobby of mine, so I’ll never put the time in to reach the level of consistency that id like. I also feel like I end up oversharpening by the time I get a near whittling edge with consistent bevels.
Best Cars bilding by Hands🥇
Great summary, but I will disagree about the inability to achieve a semi-convex on a fixed angle system. There are a couple ways to go about it. One is to simply clamp the stone at a slight angle. Another method is to use a curved rod, which are available for some systems.
For the life of me I can't get my knife shaving sharp using a fixed angled system, but 3 minutes free handing on a stone I can shave my face with my knife, i dont understand 🤷♂️
😂 I miss Kara being on the lives
Love the Dana White clip! Thank you for that!
lmao at the hapstone in the pocket. That cracked me up
lol
FUN FACT:
Cane sugar is just less refined sugar, not really different kind of sugar. 🫡
I remembered this because I heard "raw cane sugar", which triggered my German. 😱
What fixed angle sharpener would you recommend for someone who’s just getting into sharpening? I free hand, but people ask me all the time what kind of sharpener I use, and when I tell them I free hand they say they can’t do it and proceed to ask what kind of fixed angle sharpener I would recommend, and I have no idea.
im making a video on top 5 knife sharpeners now, so it depends but the work sharp professional comes with everything you need
Maybe. For Sara
Not a bad idea I'm sure she would love it
Also some people have hand problems, there the fixed angle construct takes a lot of the strain.
Both... i like to do both...
I have a shapton 220grid and a fallkniven dc521 after 5 sharpenings I got it in my hand and the blades are quite sharp and I can cut through a paper towel (not perfect but i working on it )
thats awesome good for you keep it up
I like very much the Worksharp Guided Field. But if i could, i will take the pro one ..! But you need some place for it ..! ^^
The worksharp taught me how to freehand. If that makes sense.
Agreed, that's one of the main reasons I learned
At what point in the coffee description was she just messing with you?? 🤣🤣
coming to your house just for coffee
I just like contraptions 😂
Why I only see people sharpen pocket knives with these expensive tsprofs and other systems? Why nobody is sharpening 8 inch chef knifes? Are these systems not ideal for kitchen chef knives?
They are not ideal for *any* large blade, but thin flexible blades are even worse.
And i think the Japonese stones are the best. With diamant and ceramic to ..! ^^
