I want to point out (for no reason), that there was no such thing as a Red 747 Swingline Stapler, but the movie did so well later on, they actually started producing them because of it. "At Swingline, the marketing department became aware after noticing a perplexing spike in customer requests for red staplers and a glut of counterfeit red Swinglines on the internet." It's now the second most popular stapler they sell. Here's to you, Milton.

Oh by the way, if nobody said this yet, this movie was actually based on a crudely-drawn cartoon short by Mike Judge (best known for Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill) called "Office Space". It featured Milton and Lumberg. Milton looks different from the actor in the movie but his concept is the same.

I first saw this on cable in the early 00s, while I was working in an office in Houston, Texas. My coworkers all had seen it, and after seeing it (and totally relating to it and loving it), I started doing a vocal impression of Milton for my coworkers. They loved it and would tell people in other departments, who would call me occasionally and ask me to do it. Fortunately my supervisor had a sense of humor and would crack jokes and do voices himself at work, so it was not a problem. It didn’t get in the way of the job.
Several years later I moved to Austin, where I found out that much of the movie was actually filmed there! I ended up working at one point near where they shot the traffic jam scene, and later went past the actual Initech office location every now and then. (It’s in a business park and used by a totally different business and was never actually burned down.) I also worked with a guy, briefly, who’s a standup comic there and had a small part in Mike Judge’s IDIOCRACY (2006).
Definitely a movie I’m fond of. Excellent reaction, JL!

Just got to the part where Peter took the handle off the door and you said the movie was silly as hell. Believe it or not, everything he does during this montage scene (except for the fish) is something I literally did at my job. I had a retail job I hated, but not as much as I hated looking for a new job. I got to a point where I realized they couldn't afford to fire me because they had no one else to do my job. So I felt at liberty to basically do whatever the hell I wanted. And instead of getting fired, I got a promotion. I thought that Mike Judge followed me around to get ideas when he wrote this movie. Only I didn't end up with Jennifer Aniston. Yet anyway.

"And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire..."
For the love of God, give the man his stapler! It is not worth it!
Fun Fact: The iconic red stapler coveted by Milton was created for the film by the prop department. They needed a bright enough color to be seen on film and chose red. After the film was released, Swingline began to receive requests from customers for red staplers. Having stopped offering red several years before, they made the decision to start offering the color once more.
Bonus Fact: During Smykowski's car mauling scene, Richard Riehle said the shot took six times, contingent on a tree and a windy day. The shoot depended on the tree not blowing in the wind, as the final shot contained the tree being still.
