Storyline
In the Initech office, the insecure Peter Gibbons hates his job and the obnoxious Division VP Bill Lumbergh who has just hired two efficiency consultants to downsize the company. His best friends are two software engineers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar, that also hate Initech, and his intrusive next door neighbour Lawrence. He believes his girlfriend Anne is cheating on him but she convinces Peter to visit the hypnotherapist Dr. Swanson. Peter tells how miserable his life is and Dr. Swanson hypnotizes him and he goes into a state of ecstasy. However, Dr. Swanson dies immediately after giving the hypnotic suggestion to Peter. Peter, in his new state, starts to date the waitress Joanna and changes his attitude which results in his being promoted by the consultants. When he discovers that Michael and Samir will be downsized, they decide to plant a virus in the banking system to embezzle fraction of cents on each financial operation into Peter's account. However Michael commits a mistake in the software on the decimal place and they siphon off over $300 thousand. The desperate trio tries to fix the problem, return the money and avoid going to prison.

Great channel! Love the editing
That means a lot! I definitely put time and effort into it. It's how I get my creativity fix 😅
Cool thing about him playing testris is he was really doing it, that's windows 97 which came with Tetris, if u watch his hands he is really playing
Yeah, except never cover Jennifer Aniston's face. Never. Bad editing.
I love how Lawrence says "Two chicks at the same time" with such conviction. Like he has been waiting all his life to answer such a question.
Hahaha
Watch your corn hole bud
Jennifer Aniston's boss was Mike Judge, the writer/director. He also did Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill. If you liked this, you might like Idiocracy. It's another brilliant film by Mike Judge.
Ahh no way! I'd found out that he was the Beavis and Butthead guy but I didn't realise that was actually him in the movie. He did a great job.
You're not the first person to mention idiocracy so that's definitely one to do! Cheers man ✌️
Let me add another recommendation for Idiocracy.
@@RyanCarrington I may be misremembering it but I think Mike judge also has a degree in physics.
@@JoshuaC0rbit he does, just checked. impressive! Also realised that he Co-created Silicon Valley which I used to watch and quite liked.
@@RyanCarrington Please do Idiocracy, I'm a massive film buff from silent to modern day, and I could mention so many, but Idiocracy is one of those that stands out, hillarious.
"What's this guy in?" EVERY DAMNED THING. Stephen Root. He's in a TON of movies as a minor character.
I worked in a office when this came out and I related to it way too much.😂😂👍
😂 it's so relatable, isn't it? Tragic really 😅😭😂
I worked for the State of Texas (where this was filmed) and they definitely had cubicles like this.
The chances of being an unemployed software tech or engineer in Austin are actually pretty good.
This movie, "9 to 5", "Clerks" and "The Secret of my Success" are my favorite workplace comedies. "The Belko Experiment" is my favorite workplace horror.
I love Clerks but that's the only one of those I've seen
Mike Judge, who wrote and directed this movie, also did a movie about manufacturing work called *Extract* . It mostly focuses on the boss, so it's still about white collar work rather than blue collar work (like *Office Space* ), but it is still about work. It's not as well regarded as *Office Space* , but I like it a lot.
Yeah this movie was a real underground hit. Originally it wasn't marketed well because the studio didn't believe in it... Then it got famous from word of mouth and became a cult classic.
Swingline originally didn't make a red stapler -- Mike Judge had his art department paint one for the movie. Then bootleggers began making bank selling painted staplers until Swingline finally realized what was going on with eBay, and started making their own official version. It's now their top-selling product!
I appreciated the coffee montage, nice touch. As a photographer, if you want to react to a couple of movies Roger Deakins worked on, Sicario and Jarhead are great. Sicario has some gorgeous night shots that few other movies have pulled off. I could recommend a wall of movies, but I'm not sure what you're into that you haven't seen.
Ah I see! In the long run it's probably been to the movies benefit
Good but of trivia about the stapler!
I've seen Jarhead. Not for a long time but I did Love it!
I've watched all sorts, but from people's suggestions I've still made a massive list.
I'm pretty open to anything though.
Also, thank you for mentioning the coffee montage! You're the first one! 👊😁
I heard Streamline used to make that color stapler a long time ago. After the movie came out, many people were requesting for it and they brought it back. My wife wants one. She loves the Milton character. Now every time she sees Stephen Root anywhere, she starts to mimic him.
The guy "Steve" (selling magazine subscriptions - Orlando Jones) and David Herman (Michael Bolton), were both on 'Mad T.V.' , original cast.
I just had to Google what Mad T.V was haha 😩
@@RyanCarrington 😄 yeah, keep forgetting that our cousins across the pond didn't quite have the same shows we did/vice versa....
His name is Stephen Root. The voice of Bill in the show, 'The King of the Hill'
The actor that plays Milton is in a lot of things. He was in an amazing 90’s sitcom News Radio with Dave Foley, Phil Hartman, and Joe Rogan! You should check it out. Great show!
The Halloween Party episode has to be one of the best ever.
I never even recognized him until someone told me that's who it was. Unbelievable! Mr. James was one of my favorite characters from News Radio.
"Oh...fuck Brian!" That made me laugh.
Seriously though 😂
Love that Milton found the money and they ended up having nothing to lose. Great movie!
Soundtrack is The Geto Boys from Houston Texas.
So good!
'if i dont get my stapler i could burn down the building' loved milton
😂
The hubs would mutter that all the time. 😂
I think I remember tiny red Swingline staplers back in the early 1970s (....sold as school supplies ).....but after this film was released, people wanted FULL-size red staplers. THAT's when Swingline started producing them. In fact, I recall a few years ago.....an anniversary edition of the DVD came out.....& it came with a red stapler.
That's great marketing!
This movie was filmed in Dallas, Texas and Austin,Texas I'm from the Dallas/Ft Worth area and I remember dudes looking like Lawrence were everywhere! I even worked with a few! That was great casting 😄🤣
Haha brilliant!
What I just realized now, Mike Judge directed both Office Space and Idiocracy and this movies soundtrack is pretty much entirely “Geto Boys” and the pimp in Idiocracy “Upgreyedd” is played by Scarface. Mike Judge must have been a huge Rap-A-Lot fan.
Mike Judge said that he based this script on his life when he used to be a software engineer. Great reaction man! Like that you appreciate what this movie was trying to do and why it works so well. It's a total cult classic now. It's definitely not a super developed movie story but it works.
Steve was on Mad TV if you're old enough to remember that show.
Not sure we had that in the UK 🤔
The traffic in the beginning I can totally relate too!! His neighbor is a crack up!
It's funny, I believe that traffic was filmed in Dallas, but the rest of the film was made in Austin. At the time the traffic in Austin was still fairly light in comparison. It's horrible, now.
@@sallyatticum Yeah I'm from Dallas/Ft Worth the Traffic is horrific! Austin Traffic is definitely worst than it was back in the day
This is my favorite movie of all time. The main character actually is a dead ringer for my younger brother so I always watch it as if it really is him, which makes it even funnier, because my brother is a programmer too. You got a new sub, I came here from the Airplane reaction and I enjoyed your silly laughing. This one sealed the deal.
Haha brilliant!
Thanks for the sub! Appreciate it. Take care! 😊
I’m a simple man. I see Office Space content, I like and comment.
Steven Root is an incredible character actor who can do anything. He was an impressive executive on News Radio.
Did you get that memo about the TPS reports?
Those cubicles are super common in the US. Especially in that era, most places are going away from that now, but definitely you will still see it over here.
I miss my cubicle and it’s relative privacy compared to this new open space that every corporation has seemed to move to.
Love the little memes you inject man, some reactors do it too much, but every so often is nice. Keep it to a minimum and make sure they only last for a second or two, that's good.
Yeah, I can see why people don't like them as it can be jarring but sometimes a scene just reminds me of something funny and I just can't help myself.
There’s a great book called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Shit that pairs well with this movie.
Sounds like a bit of me
Yes, the cubicles were like that, and often still are.
Someone I know was a school teacher. In the last days of the school year, there's the usual slack attitude of not pushing to start new stuff. He brought this movie in and showed it to the class and was startled to find that none of the jokes hit home with the students.
I guess you have to go work out in the real world for just a little bit to get it.
I've never met anyone who worked in the real world who didn't get the jokes.
Favorite scene: the flair scene with Jennifer Anniston.
Last time someone mentioned TPS reports to me? Yesterday.
We must need to get the soul sucked of of us before we can relate 😅
Fun fact: The "TPS" in TPS reports stands for Totally Pointless Shit as confirmed by the filmmakers.
Haha brilliant
Not only was I working in the IT industry in the same city and era this movie was filmed it was completely and accurate depiction of what corporate it was like in the late 90s.
Ah man, I hope it's better now!
Thanks for watching 🙂
@@RyanCarrington nope it's exactly the same. With the exception of the forced wokeness that's about as authentic and genuine as crocodile tears.
Funny how a lot of this old movies first time watching videos includes some "Oh yes I recognize that from the meme"
Super late to the party on this one, but we used to keep this DVD at work and whenever someone’s had a really bad day at work, we would send them home with it to watch. Lol.
Don't worry, look how late I was in watching the movie haha
I really like that idea though. Sounds like a caring workplace at least (with good taste too!) 🙂
One of my all time favorites made me stop and get coffee cool reaction thanks
OMG I just came here from your Titanic reaction where you mentioned having used the "84 years" clip before 😂
Hahaaa that's amazing 😂
"Naga....Naganna work here anymore, anyway" lmaooo
Stephen Root fan since NewsRadio 📻
Fun fact. The actual Michael Bolton did a bit on funny or die on YT where he plays Michael Bolton in office space.
I'll look for it!
Like it or not, it is of my own personal opinion that in the manner that "Airplane!" served right properly to ordinally cap off the 1970s, "Office Space" likewise single-handedly was responsible for serving right so properly to cardinally kickstart the new millennium.
Just sayin', mind you.
😊😊😊
Oddly enough, my office isn't far from where this was filmed. You can actually see the building across the street from ours in one of the end scenes.
That's pretty cool
I'm not going to lie Ryan. I don't know why, but I really loved your coffee montage in the opening.
Cheers man.
I'm sure a version with tea will make it's way to another video soon enough.
@@RyanCarrington I will watch it with at least equal enthusiasm.
@@RyanCarrington love this movie and have watched it dozens of times. It's art imitating life for me. I had a job that I hated as much as Peter hated his. At one point, I realized that they couldn't fire me because they had no one that could do my job unless I trained them first. I wasn't hypnotized like him, but I know the sense of freedom that Peter felt. As a matter of fact, except for cleaning fish at my desk, everything else he does in the montage is something I literally did myself. Made me wonder if Mike Judge had been following me around taking notes. (Not really of course).
1987 movie Three O'clock High
Is your cup of tea mate, guaranteed you'll enjoy the 80's on this movie. Go in blind don't read synapse I guess you should look at cover but don't read cast or info but yeah great movie I'm still waiting for anyone to react to none have yet but many have it on their list for later
Agreed. 3 o'clock high is a forgotten classic.
"What a plum." - I'm using that.
It's a very southern Britain insult 😂
Michael Bolton redoes a scene from the movie for a “funny or die” skit. Look it up it’s hilarious!
One of my all time favorites. I still quote this movie
I'm glad to finally have it in my life haha
Funny trivia: swingline didn't make a red stapler before this movie. The set department just painted it red.
After this movie so many people wanted a red stapler they started making them!
Stephen Root (Milton) also was in the TV shown NewsRadio he played the station owner Jimmy James.
He has small parts in several Cohen brothers movies as well. And a theater at the University of Florida, his alma mater, is named for him.
I want a red stapler. I felt so sorry for Milton when he didn't get a piece of cake.
That was so sad, man.
Reminded me of school.
Cubicles nowadays don't have high walls like the ones in this film anymore. The wall of today's cubicles is now about maybe two feet high so you can see everyone at their desk. They probably do that now so management can keep an eye on you more right from their desk.
😩😩😩
Welcome, Ryan Carrington, to the RUclips reaction community! I'm not a member, guess I'm just saying it on their behalf... but anyway, yeah I want to see a reaction to the movie "What's up Doc?" Never seen anyone react to it.
Thank you! Good to be here! 😊👊
Gosh. I think I am the only other person who's suggested What's Up Doc? to anyone, but then I recommend lots of Streisand movies and songs.
Directed by and starring Mike Apatow as an office employee who hates his job
After being in the software/tech industry since well before this movie came out, I still love it, but..... It strikes closer to home than I would like. Same with the first couple of seasons of Silicon Valley. If you are ever in a group watching one of these two, look around. You will immediately be able to tell the ones who have worked in the tech industry by the slightly pained "Ha-ha-ha, but....... That actually happened to me two months ago" look on their faces.
Don't worry, my man, you're not old. Hell, atleast you called that a floppy disk. To me, that's a hard disk....floppy disk were actually floppy lol.
Glad you enjoyed this classic. Subtle, under the radar comedy with a great cast, which makes it kinda similar to Galaxy Quest.
Ooh, you've just reminded me that I need to watch Galaxy Quest!
@@RyanCarrington nice. You'll know/recognize probably 75% of the people with speaking lines in the entire movie.
You should check out “Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil”, hilarious movie
I won't name the giant mega corporation that I used to work for but to give you an example of how crazy things are these days we were subjected to random searches upon entering the office although they never defined what kind of contraband they were looking for, you could get written up if you didn't use the handrail on the stairs or had loose shoelaces or went one mile above the speed limit while driving on the facility. You could even get fired for it. Even when I would take an Uber or Lyft or a company car I was responsible for what the driver did. So if I call to lift to pick me up to go to the airport and the guy sped on his way in even if I wasn't in the car I would get written up. They even had a custom mandatory app for our company issued phones where your fellow coworkers could take a picture of you and report you to your manager if you committed any of these horrible offenses. But we all put up with it because they pay more than anybody else... SMH
Damn, that sounds toxic! Sometimes money just isn't worth it.
Went to work for a doctor a few years ago. He had a red swingline on the desk. I knew we'd have a good working relationship.
😂😂
I see the film making in the beginning. Very clean
this and Fight Club are 2 movies I look back on that just nailed a slice of American culture in that time period
Absolutely love Fight Club.
One of my favourites.
I once heard someone say that at 15, this movie is a comedy, at 25, it's a documentary, at 35 it's a biography and at 45 it's a horror movie. I'm at the biography point...
Oh god, that's quite the description.
Funny but also very depressing 😬
I am literally living this life right now. We have a time off board at work and I am intentionally altering my schedule to avoid my boss. If I'm not there when she is then in theory she can't fire me.
That sucks man!
I've had some bad jobs where I hated going in and this really brought back those memories
Stephen Root, who plays Milton, is a prolific character actor. He's also been in Get Out, NewsRadio, DodgeBall, The Man in the High Castle, Idiocracy (from Office Space writer-director Mike Judge) and several Coen Brothers films. Gary Cole has worked mostly in TV on shows like Suits, Veep and Mixed-ish. David Herman was on the American variety show MADtv and is mostly a comedian and voice actor. Diedrich Bader, who plays Lawrence, he's been in EuroTrip, Napoleon Dynamite, the Jay & Silent Bob films and a bunch of cartoons.
Here's a fun fact. Swingline didn't make red staplers. The crew had to paint one red. It was only after the film that Swingline put out red ones.
That's some good trivia!
Maybe a recognise Milton from Dodgeball 🤔
I'm also trying to think who Lawrence is in Napoleon Dynamite and Jay and Silent Bob because I do not remember him at all 😬
Idiocracy is definitely on the list by the way!
So many details from this movie.
It took me several behind the scenes videos that were amazing.
Was not expecting that high quality coffee porn. Well done.
Thank you! Sometimes I just need to make stuff 🙌
They painted Milton's stapler red so it would stand out. Swingline didn't make a red stapler at the time. After this film came out they received so many calls from people asking for red staplers they created one and to this day it's their biggest seller.
For a real good laugh, check out “The Other Guys” with Will Ferrel and Mark Whalberg
His neighbor....the dude with the mustache....he's also in a movie called 'Napoleon Dynamite'. A low-budget independent cult classic......that's funny as hell & bizarre in every way.
Who was he in Napoleon Dynamite? I really liked that movie. I actually saw Jon heder at Comic Con. He was jokingly mocking a woman who was filming him from a distance, he was using lots of Napoleon Dynamite-isms but she really didn't get it and got super offended. We all thought it was hilarious though. Didn't really understand why she was filming him if she didn't get his humour 🤷🏻♂️
@@RyanCarrington He was Rex...the martial arts instructor.
My Guy that Coffee sequence was bad ass man!!! Can we see things you've filmed and edited?
I'll be honest, this movie starts SO SLOW. I like it, but I have a hard time making it thru the first like... Third.
I realized I should mention, I feel this way about Grandma's Boy, too. They're both in my favorites list.
That coffee edit was insane
Cheers buddy.
I've got a tea version I've been working on in my free time so expect that soon haha 😄
Intros are where inject some creativity so maybe check out some other videos.
Lighthouse had a more creative intro AND outro.
I've got ideas for more but they just take so long to make haha
the thing i dont understand is that michael has a navy seal picture and a flag in his apartment, so we can ASSume that the meeting about stealing money at his place but lawrence heard it. So I guess they all live in the same building?
1999 was before I started high school
This film was so great to me personally because I worked in a cubicle from the early 90's to 2008 and felt some of the same frustrations and bullshit office politics.
Great reaction to a classic.
hey whats up man new subscriber here. love your reactions just saw your airplane and supertroopers reaction some of my favorite mvies. keep doing your thing man you will blow up. im calling it
Ah thanks for your kind words and support, man! Appreciate it 👊
Let's wait and see! 🙌
One of my favorite comedies of all time! Great reaction
Thank you.
It's so good!
Anniston’s boss is Mike Judge!
You would be perfect for a “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” reaction if you haven’t seen it already.
I have unfortunately (or fortunately!) But what a reaction that would've been. It's actually one of my favourites. I have the book too! I remember buying it on DVD after hearing about Hunter S Thompson. I watched it a lot 😅
I have a friend from the U.K. His name is Ian Bruce, very tall. Married to a Latina

17:24 - The hypnosis wore off. It usually wears off in a few days, at the most.
Get Shorty and Be Cool are worth reactions. amazing cast in both. Be Cool is a sequel.
just checked. nobody has reacted to Get Shorty.
Mike Judge (writer/director) made something that may be very unfortunate prophecy with "Idiocracy." It's coming true!!!
Idiocracy is on the list 🙂
Mike Judge is the GOAT
Love this movie. There's a RUclips video from funny or die where Michael Bolton plays Michael Bolton in some of the scenes
WAT?! that's amazing. I'll have to find that now.
This is one of my faves as well, great comedy.
I reckon I would've put this on all the time if I owned it back when I used to watch DVDs 😅
@@RyanCarrington Yes and so many funny lines and memes (like you noticed) came from this. The soundtrack is 10/10 as well. Glad you checked it out and enjoyed it!
i love this movie
so this will age me, but i need to explain what this movie did to me. it came out the year i graduated high school and for whatever reason peters mood / attitude has stuck with me ever since. it set in motion my need to do what made me happy. ive turned down job offers after meeting the "main boss" because it wasnt worth it! damn it feels good to be a gangster, "O" face & "jump to conclusions" have been phrases i have used for 20 years now!
I completely agree with this! I left a job earlier this year because it was making me so unhappy and just wasn't worth the money. Happiness and mental health had to come first.
DIRTY WORK from 1998 is a good one as well...
yeahhhhh im gonna need you to go ahead and put out more videos.....
😂 working on one right now! 🙌
You would recognize him as the voice of Samurai Jack
Hey Ryan, I've checked out a few of your videos now and I think you have the vibe and the wit to be a bigger commentary channel! I'm going to give you a subscribe. Just one suggestion; try to make your talking and the video you're commenting on the same volume. It gets annoying having to adjust volume in between your talking and the movie. If its too low to hear the movie then I don't know what you're referencing a lot of the times, and if I just leave it it at a high volume your voice blows out my eardrums.
Yeah, I just checked this video out, and the volume is way lower than intended. It's a shame I can't just increase the movie track a few dbs.
I think I've rectified this in newer videos though. I got unhealthily fixated on audio at one point haha
Thanks for the sub. I appreciate it 🙏
ryan can you do me a solid and downmix the microphone audio to mono when using this mic, so that it's not fluctuating so much between left and right channels? cheers!
Dont worry, I'm not using this mic anymore 🙂
You couldn't find a red stapler after this movie.
Yikes, I graduated high school in 99 ....
Time flies, man 😩
A great choice, so underrated...def can relate to some aspects 👍😂🇬🇧 m’kay 😆
👊👊👊
Lawrence is DA MAN!
i can't talk to my mother so i talk to my diary
Anyone who has worked in an office or had a shitty boss can relate. And I think we all cheer the murder of the copier.
