    Storyline
    In the Initech office, the insecure Peter Gibbons hates his job and the obnoxious Division VP Bill Lumbergh who has just hired two efficiency consultants to downsize the company. His best friends are two software engineers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar, that also hate Initech, and his intrusive next door neighbour Lawrence. He believes his girlfriend Anne is cheating on him but she convinces Peter to visit the hypnotherapist Dr. Swanson. Peter tells how miserable his life is and Dr. Swanson hypnotizes him and he goes into a state of ecstasy. However, Dr. Swanson dies immediately after giving the hypnotic suggestion to Peter. Peter, in his new state, starts to date the waitress Joanna and changes his attitude which results in his being promoted by the consultants. When he discovers that Michael and Samir will be downsized, they decide to plant a virus in the banking system to embezzle fraction of cents on each financial operation into Peter's account. However Michael commits a mistake in the software on the decimal place and they siphon off over $300 thousand. The desperate trio tries to fix the problem, return the money and avoid going to prison.

    Mike Judge, who wrote and directed this movie, also did a movie about manufacturing work called *Extract* . It mostly focuses on the boss, so it's still about white collar work rather than blue collar work (like *Office Space* ), but it is still about work. It's not as well regarded as *Office Space* , but I like it a lot.

  • @extantsanity
    @extantsanity 2 года назад +13

    Yeah this movie was a real underground hit. Originally it wasn't marketed well because the studio didn't believe in it... Then it got famous from word of mouth and became a cult classic.
    Swingline originally didn't make a red stapler -- Mike Judge had his art department paint one for the movie. Then bootleggers began making bank selling painted staplers until Swingline finally realized what was going on with eBay, and started making their own official version. It's now their top-selling product!
    I appreciated the coffee montage, nice touch. As a photographer, if you want to react to a couple of movies Roger Deakins worked on, Sicario and Jarhead are great. Sicario has some gorgeous night shots that few other movies have pulled off. I could recommend a wall of movies, but I'm not sure what you're into that you haven't seen.

    • @RyanCarrington
      @RyanCarrington  2 года назад +2

      Ah I see! In the long run it's probably been to the movies benefit
      Good but of trivia about the stapler!
      I've seen Jarhead. Not for a long time but I did Love it!

    I won't name the giant mega corporation that I used to work for but to give you an example of how crazy things are these days we were subjected to random searches upon entering the office although they never defined what kind of contraband they were looking for, you could get written up if you didn't use the handrail on the stairs or had loose shoelaces or went one mile above the speed limit while driving on the facility. You could even get fired for it. Even when I would take an Uber or Lyft or a company car I was responsible for what the driver did. So if I call to lift to pick me up to go to the airport and the guy sped on his way in even if I wasn't in the car I would get written up. They even had a custom mandatory app for our company issued phones where your fellow coworkers could take a picture of you and report you to your manager if you committed any of these horrible offenses. But we all put up with it because they pay more than anybody else... SMH

    I once heard someone say that at 15, this movie is a comedy, at 25, it's a documentary, at 35 it's a biography and at 45 it's a horror movie. I'm at the biography point...

    Stephen Root, who plays Milton, is a prolific character actor. He's also been in Get Out, NewsRadio, DodgeBall, The Man in the High Castle, Idiocracy (from Office Space writer-director Mike Judge) and several Coen Brothers films. Gary Cole has worked mostly in TV on shows like Suits, Veep and Mixed-ish. David Herman was on the American variety show MADtv and is mostly a comedian and voice actor. Diedrich Bader, who plays Lawrence, he's been in EuroTrip, Napoleon Dynamite, the Jay & Silent Bob films and a bunch of cartoons.
    Here's a fun fact. Swingline didn't make red staplers. The crew had to paint one red. It was only after the film that Swingline put out red ones.

      That's some good trivia!
      Maybe a recognise Milton from Dodgeball 🤔
      I'm also trying to think who Lawrence is in Napoleon Dynamite and Jay and Silent Bob because I do not remember him at all 😬
      Idiocracy is definitely on the list by the way!

    They painted Milton's stapler red so it would stand out. Swingline didn't make a red stapler at the time. After this film came out they received so many calls from people asking for red staplers they created one and to this day it's their biggest seller.

      Who was he in Napoleon Dynamite? I really liked that movie. I actually saw Jon heder at Comic Con. He was jokingly mocking a woman who was filming him from a distance, he was using lots of Napoleon Dynamite-isms but she really didn't get it and got super offended. We all thought it was hilarious though. Didn't really understand why she was filming him if she didn't get his humour 🤷🏻‍♂️

    so this will age me, but i need to explain what this movie did to me. it came out the year i graduated high school and for whatever reason peters mood / attitude has stuck with me ever since. it set in motion my need to do what made me happy. ive turned down job offers after meeting the "main boss" because it wasnt worth it! damn it feels good to be a gangster, "O" face & "jump to conclusions" have been phrases i have used for 20 years now!

    • @RyanCarrington

    Hey Ryan, I've checked out a few of your videos now and I think you have the vibe and the wit to be a bigger commentary channel! I'm going to give you a subscribe. Just one suggestion; try to make your talking and the video you're commenting on the same volume. It gets annoying having to adjust volume in between your talking and the movie. If its too low to hear the movie then I don't know what you're referencing a lot of the times, and if I just leave it it at a high volume your voice blows out my eardrums.

    • @RyanCarrington
      @RyanCarrington  Год назад

      Yeah, I just checked this video out, and the volume is way lower than intended. It's a shame I can't just increase the movie track a few dbs.
