Get Smart! Introducing the Shoe Phone

- In the very first scene of the first episode of the 1965 sitcom Get Smart!, viewers were introduced to secret agent Maxwell Smart's 'covert' shoe telephone, which would go on to become one of the signature running gags of the popular US television series.
Viewing this scene through today's eyes renders it significantly less absurd than it would have appeared in 1965. Back then, not only the concept of having a telephone stored in a shoe was absurd - the very notion of a portable telephone of any kind was unthinkable. Hearing a telephone ringing in the audience of a performance would have been utterly bizarre, rather than the omnipresent annoyance it is today.

"What did he say Max?" "He asked me to get my knee off of his chest". Damn! What a hilarious show. Don was great at it.

Get smart pilot Maxwell Smart shoe phone in black and white.
Get smart season 1 pilot Don Adams as Maxwell Smart and his Shoe phone.
This clip fascinates me so much because years after this was made, everything about him getting a call on a "shoe phone" is perfectly normal in every way except for it being built into his shoe. I was in a courtroom once and got a call on my cell phone and ran out into the hall. There is a famous incident where a violin player was giving a concert and someone got a call, and the violin player started playing the Nokia ringtone, probably because he was upset that the ringtone distracted him.
I LOVE how the credits follow him through the doors.
Missed it by that much
He will always be Inspector Gadget to me.
First cell phone 😂

I met Don Adams at a Roberto Duran training camp in Palm Springs. I’m thinking it was 1983.
the only TV program in the 60's to actually predict the cellphone

I am just now seeing this posting of the clip. There was a previous posting that cut off the part where he gets the closet door open, so I didn't know until now that he was able to escape.
He took a ricochet in the nuts while shooting that cliop and could never have kids. (Don Adams). Tim F
