- RETURN TO KANDY Mandy was diagnosed with cancer in Kandy SRI LANKA in July 2023, and we ended up going to Kandy THREE times in total.
This definitely wasn't a hardship as there was so much delicious and HEALTHY food and drink to enjoy.
I think I was truly blessed to have been in Kandy at such a time of emotional upheaval as this city was so wonderful and calming.

Sri Lanka, the gift that keeps giving!
Take care and stay safe x 🙏🇬🇧
Hello Steve! Sri Lanka certainly is an amazing country. Thank you so much for your completely spot-on comment! 🤗🙏🇱🇰
Hi Mandy & Lee,
Appetising food & friendly people.
The first restaurant really gives tons of food, great value.
Two questions for you:
1) in countries / places where you eat with your fingers, do they have a toilet to clean your hands or provide a bowl with water?
2) I've seen you buying fruits, how do you cut them? Do you ask for a knife at ur Hotel / BnB?
Wishing you a lovely weekend. Chat later 🙋🏻♂️
Hi! As a Sri Lankan lemme answer the first question for you. In most local restaurants/ cafes you will have a separate handwash sink/ wash basin area, 90% of the time you don't need to go to the toilet to wash your hands 😊 as focus on hygiene is increasing, even many of the smaller places will now have handwashing liquid as well. The somewhat fancier places will also have a hand dryer and/ or paper towels...all in all it's quite sanitary and one of my biggest peeves when i visit US is that there is no place to wash hands 😂 even if using utensils we are so used to washing our hands before eating haha.
Actually even more than having no sink to wash hands, it's really frustrating not to have a hand/ bidet shower in the toilets. Toilet paper alone never suffices for us, we NEED TO WASH after using the loo 😂 but that's an entirely separate topic 🤣🤣🤣
@@minervarose7664 Hello back a you & thanks for taking the time to comment.
Obviously we westerners don't always wash our hands when eating a sandwich / burger & fries. So yes there's a possible contamination.
But otherwise we usually use forks or spoons to eat, meaning no direct contact with food.
I was just wondering how it worked in countries where people eat with their fingers, especially in small lunch places that may not have a washroom...
@@SERGIO-cr6uy yeah even small places generally have a handwash sink, certainly the ones these guys are going to. And yeah if you are too lazy to go wash your hands you can ask for a "finger bowl" which will sometimes come with hot water and a slice of lime.
@@minervarose7664Thank you so much for your great replies to SERGIO's question.
We really appreciate you taking the time to answer and to share local information 🙏🤗♥️ ~ Mandy
@@SERGIO-cr6uy Hello SERGIO, and thank you for the two questions 🤗🙏
I definitely think Minerva Rose answered the first question brilliantly 👏😊
In regards to buying fruit... we carry 2 metal teaspoons and 2 plastic knives... and it's amazing how much you can cut with those! I also carry 2 bowls so it's always easy to whip up a nice light snack.
Thanks again, SERGIO . It is always so lovely to hear from you. Have a great weekend 🤗😊 ~ Mandy and Lee
Great Video, as always, an abundance of amazing healthy and reasonable priced food, how good is that. 💯😊 xx
We completely agree, Susan! Such delicious, healthy food at such reasonable prices... yet another reason as to why we loved Sri Lanka 🤗🇱🇰♥️

16:00 best way to eat woodapple is to scoop the middle. And mix it with finely crushed jaggery, and leave it in the fridge for about 3 hours. And then eat it.
That sounds delicious, Machang! We'll look forward to trying it the next time we're in Sri Lanka 🤗 🇱🇰🙏
I am saddened to hear about your cancer diagnosis. Why are you not treated in New Zealand? I am hoping for the best for you.
That's so lovely of you, thank you. I had the biopsy and scans in Kandy then went back to Australia for treatment. This is the playlist showing my Journey to Wellness 🤗

Amla is NOT tamarind. It is called nelli by the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. It is highly considered as a medicinal fruit used for many ailments and just to stay healthy as a prophylactic and also used as an oil for healthy hair. It looks like a green olive and has a bitter/ sweet/ sour taste combined. The botanical name is phyllanthus embllica and in English it is called Indian gooseberry. Tamarind is an entirely different fruit that has a sweet sour taste , no bitter taste. Eaten when ripe and the pulp used to give a sweet dour taste in cooking . Also used as the main ingredient in worcester sauce. Veralu looks like an olivecand has a seed inside as an unpitted olives. Howevervit is sour if eaten raw when notvtipe but it is very soft when it is ripe like a soft pulp that can be removed from your fingers and has a pleasant aroma and tastes sweet.
Thank you so much for the correction, Sam, and for the excellent information. I have since tried amla powder and see exactly what you mean the bitter flavour.
Yet another reason for us to return to Sri Lanka is to try more of these amazing medicinal fruit!
Sorry to hear about your illness. Kandy or Colombo would be two of the best places in the world for treatment.
Thank you so much for your kindness, Vijaya - it is so greatly appreciated ♥️🤗🙏
I'm not sure if you've seen any of the videos in my Journey To Wellness series, starting from when I received the initial diagnosis in Kandy on the 11th July, and showing further visits to the hospital ♥️

veralu or sri lankan olive tasted smokey because when we make achcharu out of veralus first we boil them inside hot water with turmeric powder. if you taste veralu as it is raw it tastes very sweet sometimes sour if they are not ripe.
love your guys energy cheers.

Great video very informative. Hope your doing okxx
Thank you so much, Julie! Yes, I'm doing well, and it really means lots that you asked 😊😍 Sending you a big hug xx🤗🤗🤗 ~ Mandy
There is no other way than mixing both rice and curry. One of tge reasons we eat from hand is because we want to mix the food well so thae flavours can be enjoyed together
Some people let the fires be like that so that the smoke drives the mosquitoes away. Some people prefer the smoke than getting bit by mosquitoes.

Hi Mandy & Lee:
Loving seeing your Sri Lanka adventures.
Just wondering if you avoid eating any foods in order to avoid travellers upset stomachs? Do you have any tricks/ remedies to help?
Hello Eleanor! It's always so lovely to hear from you... especially with such great travel questions.
We have a few basic things we try to follow...
1) We look for busy places filled with locals, as that way the food should be fresh
2) We don't ask for ice - but we do have it in drinks from street stall juice/smoothie shops, as again, they should have a high turnaround of goods
3) We avoid empty tourist restaurants... not just because they tend to be far more expensive, but also because we don't know how old the food is out the back... and a fancy dining area doesn't necessarily mean a clean kitchen
4) I tend to forget to wash my hands before eating, and I don't use hand sanitiser. Lee likes to wash his hands before and after eating
If I think of anything else I'll add it below... or we might make a travel vlog about it, and mention your question 🤗😁
Re: treatment for a dodgy stomach... we've tried riding it out, which was super painful/uncomfortable, and we've also been to the local chemist and asked fir a remedy... and that always works.
We didn't suffer any bad stomachs in either Sri Lanka or the Philippines. Saying all that, the 2 worst cases of food poisoning I've ever had were in the UK and Australia 🤣🤗 ~ Mandy
I agree, the worst I have ever had was from a restaurant in Australia. Normally I don’t do ice but we did have juice from breakfast buffets that had ice in it. I felt that could have been the culprit. We tell the tale of our whole group fronting up to the pharmacy all getting the same over the counter anti diarrhoea meds. Just part of the adventure. 🤨
Kandy, a gem of an experience in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
It's a great city with so much to offer. 🙏🇱🇰😍
520 for that 😮 where is it?

Hi guys, always love the food videos.
Hello Cindy! 👋 It's always so lovely to hear from you. I love making the food videos... Lee's more about the travel ones 🤗😊
Wonderful to see you both enjoying the pleasures of Kandy. I regret to say I lost touch with your splendid videos just after you left Portugal . Mandy -- wishing you all the very best . Lee -- the last time I communicated with you I think we mentioned the books of Paul Theroux . I first visited Kandy in 1982 . Is the Olde Empire Hotel still around ? It was right beside the Sri Krishna Dosai. Best wishes to you both .
Hello there. 👋
I'm so glad you are still enjoying our videos. Kandy was a splendid place to spend some time. Yes, the Olde Empire hotel is still there, around the corner from Sri Krishna. Did Thoroux stay there? If he did, I wasn't aware. I would have stuck my head around the corner for a nose if I'd have known. 😊
We'll be doing some rail travel in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh this year so I must go back and re-read him. 👍. Stay tuned for some more fun on the road! 😍
