- Opened in 1996, Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) has been the leading institution for National Education (NE) with its mission to share the Singapore Story and inspire visitors to contribute to Singapore’s future.
SDC’s history dates back to 1988 when it was first conceptualised as a museum to showcase the history of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). The idea evolved into the setting up of a National Defence Exhibition Centre which was later renamed SAFTI Exhibition Centre (SEC). The centre was developed in tandem with the building of SAFTI Military Institute and housed within its grounds. During the development of the SEC, it was decided that instead of a traditional museum, it would adopt a different approach to be a “discovery centre” which provided visitors a multi-sensory experience through interactive exhibits and simulator rides. The SEC also underwent a name change to become the Singapore Discovery Centre and was officially opened by the late President Ong Teng Cheong on 23 November 1996. On its opening day, SDC attracted more than 4000 visitors.
The Centre’s architecture was designed to reflect its links to the SAF, with a prominent triangular roof incorporated to represent the tri-services: the Army, Air Force and Navy. In November 2004, SDC underwent a major redevelopment to meet the changing needs of National Education. The centre was designed with the key objective of instilling in Singaporeans a sense of confidence in the future of Singapore. It reopened on 18 July 2006 by then Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, The opening of the revamped SDC signified a new chapter for SDC.
Today, SDC provides a mind-and-heart-engaging and multi-sensory learning experience which spans a selection of integrated themes. Visitors, especially students and NSmen, can learn about key NE, Total Defence (TD) and Commitment to Defence (C2D) messages, as well as gain insights into Singapore’s challenges, dreams and aspirations.
