  • Description:
    Demon Slayer has quickly become one of the most popular anime of the last few years. From incredible animation to deep-routed characters, this show has grown an incredibly large fan base. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its problems as well. In this video, I discuss one of the biggest problems with Demon Slayer and how the main theme of empathy is not delivered upon across all the characters, specifically with Tanjiro's younger sister, Nezuko.

    It was an intresting take, but i had no problem empatizing with Nezuko, for starters it is clear she is a demon that remembers the past more clearly than others, so that alone separates her from other demos and humans placing her in an unknowable place, so i am far more leanient to let this pass.
    For me the BIGGEST problem with demon slayer is the lack of caracterization of the world (when talking about the anime at least), because it feels like they are placing the characters in different places with no real conection in between.
    This is actually a pacing problem as they, in my opnion, are jumping from place to place episode to episode, not leaving enugh breathing space to flesh out the world and make it feel real.

  • @davec8385

    I completely agree. The way the show uses the most interesting character as nothing more than a simple object and plot device really turns me off the show. Theoretically Nezuko should be as interesting as the main characters in Tokyo Ghoul and ChainsawMan, as someone who has lost some their humanity and is at odds with both the human and monster societies. Someone who's had their place in the world (as well as their family) ripped away from them and must go on a journey to find it, as well as prove that they are still more human than monster.
    Instead they have all of their agency removed, literally have no voice, next to no screen time and no personality outside of random chibi reaction shots and the one scene in season 2.The only time they accomplish anything is when they leave the box while Tanjiro is losing a fight. so Nezuko can lose and buy time for Tanjiro to get his patented 'midfight power up' and then kill the demon himself. Or to Deus ex machina the 'unsolvable problem' like incurable demon poison because the writers wrote themselves into a corner and aren't willing to kill the main character. Or to simply be a generic female character for Zenitsu to swoon over and motivate him to try.
    There are some great strengths in this show like the production quality that make me want to care and like it. But instead these issues and more are slowly grinding away at my will to care about the show.

    Nezuko didn't bother me that much, mainly because I even forgot she was there. What does annoy me is how the demons are so one-dimensional and then at the very last second the author throws in some sad story about them. It feels so cheap, especially when the demon showed no shred of humanity left. On a similar vibe, demons showing up out of nowhere also feels cheap, like the upper six in the movie, or the brother in the 2nd season.
    In addition Zenitsu and Inosuke are just so abnoxious.

    Agree. Most everytime we saw Nezuko is when Tanjiro was in a pickle in a battle. What simple thing that would have way further characterizing Nezuko is seeing her interact with other characters. You pretty much couldnt do it for most of the show but the perfect time would have been when they were all in the hospital. That part of the story was a down time, characters werent in a haste to do anything, and we could have seen Nezuko interact more with the other 2 character and maybe even the staff, and maybe even have the Captains drop by to see this novel demon in possession of a boy. The show has long and drawn out fight season, the battle in S2 took up about hald a 1 cour season of ~6, and it needs more character interaction outside of battle to add more info to the characters.

    Nezuko having a spell placed on her along with her not speaking pretty much takes away whatever agency she could have it feels cheap and its turning into a demon doesn't mean losing ur ability to talk so i don't get why she can't talk i might get some heat for this but Nezuko isn't really much of a character and is more of a get out of jail free card when tanjiro and the gang are in danger season 2 is the most evident of that.

  • @copperfield42
    @copperfield42 2 года назад +27

    I like KnY and all, but Nezuko's characterization is certainly one of it's biggest problem, she is just the mascot.
    And that is made worse when Tamayo (the only other good demon) is introduced, why she has her mind while Nezuko loses hers? also Nezuko have way too much power for someone that haven't do anything or even eating anything on years, meanwhile Tamayo still need to feed on blood... and that only get worse as the story progresses...
    Nezuko's character would have been better if she keep her mind and have to constantly deal with her new found hunger for people, like idk, drinking a little of Tanjiro's blood every once in a while or eat raw meat or something and she also yearning for a cure of her undesirable state, that way it give more urgency to Tanjiro to find her a cure as soon as possible before she can't take it anymore and succumb to the hunger

    I never really had an issue with Nezuko, but this video does make me think more about her. She hasn't gotten much development outside of her fighting capabilities and the bit that you mentioned about her acting under the spell Urokodaki rather than her own motivation is really interesting. You'd think that after what she's been through that she would be more than willing to protect humans by her own volition. One thing that's always bothered me in the back of my mind is how she is acquiring all these powerful abilities even though she's been asleep most of the time. I think with the sudden new burst of things she's capable of it's more than likely going to be explained very soon. Anyways great video man, glad to see someone brave enough to talk about the issues of something immensely popular XD

    While I do really like Demon Slayer, I will say that during the first season my biggest gripe was the handling of Nezuko. The show makes this big hoopla about her condition at the beginning, but outside of a few scenes afterwards it doesn't really come up much and Nezuko just ends up being a cute girl that shows up every once in a while to help Tanjiro and friends.
    Feel like there is a lot of interesting things the show could do with her struggling with being a demon or having to deal with people treating her differently, but up until now she's mostly been wasted potential in my eyes.
    Will say though that I do still like her presence in the show overall, just wish she was more of an actual character.

    I’ve never had any problems relating to Nezuko. The nature of her condition is the reason for your criticisms, it isn’t the neglect of the writers.
    Nezuko is the catalyst for Tanjiro’s quest and transformation. And one thing has always been very clear: Tanjiro and Nezuko love each other.
    They have always fought for and stood by each other. And it’s not just in their words, but their actions.

    Demon Slayer has a problem with character writing and Nezuko isn't even a particularly egregious example of it. Nezuko isn't any more or less developed than the other 2 support members of the main cast. Zenitsu and Inosuke are not developed past establishing their archetype they might get more screen time which I'm not even sure is true but all that amounts to is they get more 1 dimensional characterization. But is that even a problem when Demon Slayer isn't trying to be anything beyond a competently told Shonen. If it wasn't for the popularity and the high quality animation I doubt you or anyone else would care about it's mediocre character writing.

    • @TheKiroshi
      @TheKiroshi 2 года назад

      I can disagree with Zenitsu. BOAR LOUD is almost a gag character at this point. But as annoying and boring as Zenitsu is.. he does have moments.
      He's got a backstory that he's weak and cowardly and yet his grandfather trusted him to grow stronger, even to the denial of better students. He does genuinely care for others and steps in when push comes to shove. Despite his constant fear, he does continue to become a demon slayer.
      but holy duck please stop yelling and crying and talking about girls, you think Uzui likes girls? Of course he does, his joke is that he's got 3.. Zenitsu just splurges for any girl. And than screams.
      I don't disagree that Demon Slayer is pretty poor in characters overall. But Tanjiro's take on knowing he has to kill people is pretty unique. Not even in Shonen but most shows in general, your main character (s) often refuses to kill whenever possible. But Tanjiro is aware that their death is the punishment they deserve for their action.

    • @carlosanthony4972
      @carlosanthony4972 2 года назад

      @@TheKiroshi I agree that Tanjiro is pretty unique in the landscape of modern Shonen. But Zenitsu is just as bad as Inosuke and Inosuke. Yes he has a sad backstory and chooses to protect others by putting himself in danger but so does everyone else in the show. In fact I would say he's worse due to the fact that you can't really say that he's brave. Given the fact that every opportunity he's given a chance to display bravery he falls asleep so that his alter ego is the one actually performing the acts of Bravery.

    • @TheKiroshi
      @TheKiroshi 2 года назад +1

      I'm not saying Zenitsu is a good character, just that he is characterized very well. He's not brave! beyond that alter-ego he doesn't even push himself to fight, but finds himself fighting due to his company.
      But outside of being a fighter, he's got good moments. When saving that couple in the woods, he sits down and talks to the guy about his love.. comforts him and understands why it means so much.. Tanjiro knows losing someone, but he really uses the "buck up! move on!" in a more positive manner. While Zenitsu really speaks with many characters he's around. It's also not only while he's asleep, Daki was caught beating or almost killing a child, and with no weapon, he did stop it, fully awake and trembling (and he did get fucked up for it)
      I don't see him not being brave as a problem for him. His problems are that yelling and screaming, the *CONSTANT* loud crying, the woman-chasing to a silly degree, and probably being a sidekick because this is what he is 90% of the time.
      Inosuke tho... "HAAHA, I BOAR MAN, I STRONG. but my gimmic is that i'm pretty?"

    Enjoying the vids. I don't normally comment, but I just wanted to share personal thoughts on the recent thumbnails - they don't make me want to click on them when I see them on my home page. I just think the minimalist red blocky letters on white background look very flat.
    I'm a lot more inclined to click on a video by, say, Under The Scope, for having aesthetically pleasing colors that pop, with matching text color to boot. Or a video by Hazel, who has this grungy, idiosyncratic style that it is instantly eye-catching.
    Just want to see this channel get the success it deserves. It's unfortunate, but the current RUclips landscape dictates that titles and thumbnail design are just as important as the content of the video itself. However, perhaps I'm in the minority on this - you should maybe run a poll, asking viewers their thoughts on the thumbnails.

    I kinda disagree with you. I think that Nezuko not being able to speak adds to her character as well as to that of her brother. Pardon my words but I have no other way to put it, but it's like taking care of a handicap(speaking from my own experience here). The able person has to be for them what they themselves can't be. If the handicapped person is blind, then the supporting person has to be their eyes. If they can't walk, then their legs etc. Nezuko's handicap of not being able to speak (or from the author's POV, not allowed to) is meant to frustrate us deliberately. It adds emphasis on Tanjiro's sole responsibility to help her and somehow free her of her handicap(imo). He wishes for her to go back to normal. There are flashbacks in the anime, where she is speaking to him freely and is kind and emphatic towards him verbally. The contrast oof her not being able to speak just shows how things are no longer as they once were. And he's just trying his best to bring back some amount of normalcy to her life. This is just my opinion, but please don't add spoilers from the manga below. I'm only watching the anime.

Mute, deaf, blind people they can all express many emotions because we humans express emotions in different ways but Nezuko is more like a dog: always in a cage, sleeping and defends her humans when they're attacked. I hope that's not how you see handicapped people. Nezuko is all and all a badly written character ESPECIALLY if you claim it was meant to be more like an handicapped person than a dog. Now it's both offensive to women and disabled people.

    What I see in Muzan is that he is afraid of death. However, what I see is that he loves life and how he can experience its many pleasures, activities, and excitements. He is cruel and ruthless but he chose not to create an empire or civilization because he has no desire to conquer or be a god but rather to stay immortal and simple. Muzan is a monster who will do anything to achieve his goals until they are fulfilled in a way that satisfies him. If Muzan conquered the sun, simply living a comfortable and simple life is enough for the Demon King for eternity till the end of time.
    Muzan hates both demons and Demon Slayers. In his point of view, demons don't appreciate life as much as he and Demon Slayers are foolish for not fearing death as well as not moving on from their pain and suffering and blaming other demons for the demon responsible for their tragedies. However, Muzan is wrong at times but he is an immortal who grew and became somewhat mature despite being narcissistic at times.
    He is similar to Star Wars Old Republic's Darth Vitiate who is an immortal Sith.
    Darth Vitiate (Immortal Emperor) Quote
    "You discern a fraction of reality beyond these stars exist other galaxies, other worlds, and other beings. I will experience or ignore them as I wish. I will spend eternity becoming everything: a farmer, an artist, a simple man. When the last living thing in the universe finally dies, I will enjoy the peace and wait for the cycle to begin again."
    But it should be noted that Muzan is EVIL and a PSYCHOPATH in the eyes of humans such as us so he is definitely not one to sympathize with. Therefore, Muzan is evil because of how he discards morality and frees himself from "human" restraints, laws, and morality that prevents humans from hurting each other as powerful species above other animals.
    I understand the Demon Slayer Corps' reasoning to exist. However, the way they denounce them as monsters is wrong. Humans eat animals and we don't remember the animals' names nor we don't care about if we eat a child, mother, or father animal. Demon Slayers eat meat to gain muscle and strength. Yet demons, at times, need human meat for nutrition. The Demon Slayers are great protectors of HUMANITY, but they do not understand respect why demons need to eat humans. Tanjiro is a good person who understood the demons at heart while the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps do not care about the demons and sometimes torture them for fun or for information

    I agree with what you said in the video but I want to add couple of things too. For me the biggest problem is some characters constant screams and not having a connection with all of the characters and only seeing their story when they die. The animation and overall story is really good but in some scenes its not ending they just scream and try to kill the demon. When they scream harder they get stronger I get it but no one dies like tanjiro broke his finger but he can still fight just end the fight in reasonable moment.

    One thing I was thinking recently is: If we remove the effects... What are they even doing with their swords? Like, yeah, I know fire breathing is different cause Fire is shown instead of water, but... Where they differ in foundation? Would I be able to differentiate the moves or attacks just based on how they fight? For some, maybe yes, but the majority is.. NO!
    This, to me, feels like the swordsmanship wasn't even thought out on the show, to work without those magical effects which, is confirmed, doesn't actually exist
    Also, gosh, Nezuko is such a NOTHING CHARACTER!! Gosh, we know NOTHING about her! What does she likes? What does she hates? What did she feared? I know nothing! Her transformarion and loss is empity cause I have no idea what she lost, not even Tanjiro! What did he lost?! How was their dynamic before she became a demon? Did they talked a lot? They fought a lot? They had different dreams? I have no idea. Their relationship seems to be the EXACT same, wether she is a demon or not. Also, "great to create emphaty"? HOW?! We know ZERO about Tanjiro's family and they are just dead, it's basically the most common backstory ever. All demons only get their backstories once they're dead, once everything ended, meaning we don't get to see the "No one is born a monster" as we never see them ACTIVELY doubting themselves, or thinking about human life, or feeling emotional conflict, outside of Akaza, Yorichi and Douma I believe, which are honestly, the best demons in the show. Gosh, Tanjiro fucking smelled a demon wanted to die and used a SWORD FORM SPECIFICALLY MADE TO GIVE PEACEFUL DEATHS, how does that even exist?! He didn't adjusted his cut in the moment, that's a basic water form every water breath user learns, but WHY?! And it was used ONLY once?! For a boy who "Kills demons cause he wants to free them" he should be abusing it, and killing majority of demons this way! Demon slayer is amateurish! Yes, it has some good stuff and it shows the author had POTENTIAL, but it's still a first manga, and not a good one! This should've been thw "Yeah, it's very bad, but I can see some potential if this author continues making manga and I sure wanna read more from them", but not this massive perfection everyone pretends it is, just because it came out at the perfect time to be marketable to everyone or because it makes you feel good. But well, great video anyways man, I'll keep an eye on your channel

    I feel this. I started the show definitely knowing all the shonen tropes I would see, but expecting, from all the out of context praise, that Nezuko would be one of the main characters. Instead, it feels like she's secondary at best. Even though she's physically with Tanjiro at all times, it feels the same as if she was just another female side character who stays at home, while the demon form serves as one of Tanjiro's power ups.

    My problem for why I can't care about "empathy for demons" theme is that it is actually empty for humans that they were. Not for monsters they became, and that is just so much more weaker.

    • @flaisemoroz7800
      @flaisemoroz7800 2 года назад +1

      So you just fundamentally don't get the metaphor then? The entire point is that people aren't just born evil. Every monster is a victim that crumbled under the pain and didn't get the help they needed from other humans. It's important to empathize with the victim the monster used to be even if it's too late to save them. Dehumanizing people who do evil things only makes it harder for new victims to get the help they need to avoid the same fate.
      I'm not a big fan of demon slayer; it constantly ruins any chance it has at being great with annoying and/or one note characters and the complete refusal to let Nezuko be a character at all . That being said, there are valid, textually supported reasons for not liking something, and then there are invalid reasons like yours that just boil down to not paying attention.

    • @masaheimoi
      @masaheimoi 2 года назад +1

      @@flaisemoroz7800 I get the metaphor, but as I said I find it weak.
      First of all ''Most bad people were not born that way'' feels like one of the most obvious things in the world. So DS gets absolutely zero points for that brave statement.
      As for ''important to empathize with the victim the monster used to be even if it's too late to save them'' just feels hollow because it only ever gives a more peaceful death instead of actually changing anyhing about overall plot or world. ''Dehumanizing people who do evil things only makes it harder for new victims to get the help they need to avoid the same fate'' sounds like an exellent story element to write in. Too bad DS didn't do that...
      And book series like Malazan and Stormlight archive have written characters who did same level of evil that demons did either rose above their past or were changed by kindness of others.

    Honestly, I think that tanjiro feeling bad for any of the demons is complete bullshit. He is not giving a reason to feel bad for these demons, since he never knows the backstory of them. It’s just ridiculous. The demons are trying to kill him and in the end he still ends up feeling bad for them.
    And I know that most of them don’t choose to become demons, but that just feels like an excuse for the demons actions I understand they want us to feel bad for the demons but they make them do such horrible things and then it show their backstory after they’re being killed why should I feel bad for them after they’ve done such horrible things even if they didn’t choose to become demons, I still have no reason to feel empathy for them

    I feel this observation a little awkward: the story always treated her character as in an an animalistic state of mind, always acting by instint because of the curse. Only a few demons (and the most powerful one) are capable of maintaing consciouness.
    One argument can be of Nezuko being one these demons (that probably would change the tone of the show), but as far as I can remember, only the pillars can do it, and with the intention to create a conscious demon (it wasn't the case of Muzan when he bit Nezuko).
    I only read the manga, so if the anime differs in some form from the manga, ignore my observation.

    I've genuinely never cared for Nezuko in any capacity, You didn't mention it here, but Nezuko was also "Fridged" during the early episodes too, when Tanijro trained for (months?) to learn Water breathing, He literally just gave away the Nezuko-Box to whomever.. Does she not need any attention whatever? Can she just be dropped in a corner and sleep for months at a time? The show doesn't treat her as a character but near literally just "Waifu imagery" most of the time.. Small, submissive, quiet, but because anime+shonen, must be a special strong person too. I'm not complaining about that trope, just that it feels copy-pasted from how to make a good character, where demon slayer didn't.
    I think the only time i've ever cared to see her, was during her Daki fight, Seeing her smile and grow excited while breaking and nearly destroying Daki feels almost too real to humanity, where breaking and harming someone who's hurt you (or your family) can be a sadist 'karmatic' enjoyment, without seeing the wrong in violence. I mean if Nezuko wanted, she would have believed to kill Daki, all she had to do was sever her neck.. but she never did.
    But than the show loses points with me as well because the transformation seems like another "TANJIRO'S SECOND WIND, FOR THE 9TH TIME! HES OUT OF POWER, FOR THE 12 TIME!" just in Nezuko flavour. I like the fact that she can pop out on a surprise.. that's a good use of the "box to protect her during the day" i like that.. but now she's a hyper-special demon? okay.. it's shonen, i'll buy it. AND NOW SHE CAN JUST CURE PEOPLE CUZ DESPERATE?
    I really love the show, Ive enjoyed every episode .. But Nezuko is objectified as "SUPER PRETTY! AND STRONG! AND KIND! SHES THE GEM OF MY VILLAGE, CUZ PRETTY!" I don't know if the manga goes into more detail, I know the anime goes at a neck-breaking fast pace between fights.. but all they needed to do was show that at night, Tanjiro speaks and comforts her, Takes her gag off and speaks.. Is she blood-crazed if not for a gag? does *any* gag make her passive or is she controlling herself like she has during the hashira introduction? I don't know! The show puts her in a box until shes important!
    The show treats their main villains who often kill and murder the most innocent of people without remorse, destroys families, violently destroys loves, brutalizes children, women, the weak, strong and everything else with demons.. And every time Tanjiro is in a major fight.. They humanize them at the end (cheap as it is). they give them time to say "Their mistakes are still human".. BUT NEZUKO? NAH BRO. Does she even remember her own death? Does she care about being in a box? What's her opinion on being a demon? How does she feel about being blood thristy? WHATS HER VOICE SOUND LIKE. I DON"T KNOW, SHE GOT 8 WORDS TO SAY IN 2 FULL SEASONS.

That thing she did in season 2 with Uzui & Inosuke was **just** her burning away Gyutaro's demon poison. She didnt close or heal their wounds in any way.

Uzui has them, but not the main cast.
      The only threat at the end of the fight was the poison, everyone was in danger not from the fight (example being Zenitsu), but the poison (inosuke, tanjiro, uzui). With no establishment of Nezuko's power (all 3 times, suddenly Demon Blood Bomb, suddenly Transformation, suddenly cure poison). I just don't feel there's any misunderstanding....
      To me, it's just that it seems fully aware that Nezuko's powers are not concrete. They can appear at anytime, and she uses them without issue. Like, even during the transformation, she suddenly ALSO reveals that she can heal near instantly? Faster than Daki or (sorry I forgot his name, her brother)
      Does that not cost energy too? Where did she get that from? When was her hyper-instant healing established..
      I know I rant, even months after I still rant about this anime. But Nezuko doesn't even get the same treatment as other box-cutter waifu anime do for their main girls.. for such a mega-hit like demon slayer, it really does feel odd that Nezuko is just..
      that.

    Warning for spoilers for season 2 entertainment district arc not mentioned in the video.
    I think the real come to Jesus moment that the author/story doesn't know what to do with Nezuko for me was when the true villains of the entertainment district arc were revealed to be an older brother, younger sister pair and the anime went out of its way to set them up as a foil for Tanjiro and Nezuko, literally had Tanjiro ask himself if that could have been him and Nezuko and then had Nezuko be completely asleep through the whole damn fight!
    She was in no way integral to defeating them, hardly even showed up before they faded away. I find the rebuke to the idea that this could have been Tanjiro and Nezuko if they'd just gone down another path harder to really feel is warranted when one half of the foil pair won't even be there to rebuke the notion to begin with.
    The fight was hype but upon realizing we were once again going to be relying on a Hashira to defeat the demon rather than the bond between our main siblings, even when it was at its most narratively impact full really made me decide this is now a brain off series. Onto the pile of shounen that are fun popcorn action but can't really be more than that to me.

But I did find it frustrating that season 2 had her sit out so much of the fighting in the Entertainment District. But my biggest gripe with Demon Slayer is still the female fan service costumes for Mitsuri and the shinbo wives. The show was devoid of fan service for so long then, bam, boob windows and thighs for days. I think part of the interesting thing about her character IS the lack of time spent on her and her motivations, feelings etc. It makes her character mysterious, which suits her since she’s one of the few demons that operate in this grey area outside of Muzan’s control. The pay off of her being developed further into the story is so worth it. Not to mention this is nothing new to anime at all. A lot of characters get introduced and remain mysteries until the author finally lifts the veil. Even members of the central cast (I.e Robin in OnePiece). She’s integral to the story and I’m sure her intentions and feelings are very aligned with Tanjiro. You can tell by just how tight that whole family was when they were all alive and well. And I’m sure her role as a supporting character is an essential part of the plot’s development, and I’m sure we will learn more about her overtime.
    TLDR: Be patient. Not every character has to be developed at the same rate. The problem isn’t the character or author, the problem is your expectation as a fan.

    • @marvelousTUD
      @marvelousTUD 2 года назад +2

      Lol there’s nothing “mysterious” about her. You can’t wonder the answer to a question you were never asked; likewise, the narrative of Demon Slayer never asks the audience to wonder what Nezuko is thinking or feeling. It just treats those things as irrelevant until the time when it suddenly decides it wants to elevate Nezuko’s character beyond being a glorified attack dog for the hero’s to pull out in times of need and then *literally* shove into a box when threats are gone. You can rationalize it any way you like, but I highly doubt “mystery” was the author’s intention.

    'Objectifying' is quite a strong word. In my understanding, the word usually implies someone objectifies others out of evil/bad intentions or at least it's usually an accusation of sorts. While in the settings of the show, it's more like a compromise solution in a desperate time. It doesn't excuse the fact that it's sad that she has to be in a box, but I'm not sure to just simply call that as objectifying. Also she's definitely not in the literal sense objectified, because she is still a living thing, if you count demons and humans as living things/ non-objects. So in the in the literal sense of the word 'object', she is definitely not that. Although, figuratively she can be, if that's what you mean.

      Objectification is generally without intention, least from a good writer. Objectifying a character removes urgency, agency or even a semblance of being a real character. It's not about intention... it's not that she's in a box, it's that she's *only* In a box, or being used by others.
      It's generally a negative thing to objectify a character, because every character has agency in their own world, bit a writer may not treat them as such.
      This is a fictional story, and inside that story, you can do different things. Why DOESNT Tanjiro have a conversation? Why is Nezuko dropped from the story so often? What are the character traits she had? How does she interact with other characters? Other demons speak, so why can't nezoku, even just to tanjiro?
      also, "objectifying" is not a literal thing. It's always figurative. You can humanize tea pots, brooms, rocks, toys.. to objectify someome literally.. would be to kill them via making them a rock

    Can you do an episode on water being wet?
    Nezuko not being able to interact with people like a normal person is the motivation for the antagonist.
    Also if Nezuko could easily be empathised with that would destroy all the world-building

    • @TheKiroshi

      Nezuko isn't an antagonist or a source of antagonism.. if Nezuko didn't exist (if Tanjiros entire family died, no survivors) Tanjiro would still run into the demon slayers, and still be motivated to help.
      Also wut.. how would empathy for nezuko ruin the world building? They do it every time a major demon is killed.

      @@TheKiroshi I don't think you worded your last sentence correctly.
      Inside the world of Demon Slayer there are valid reasons for why Nezuko should just be killed. Making with easy for third parties who aren't family members to empathize with her would remove a huge aspect of the story, would you prefer the explanation for the demon slayers discriminating against Nezuko to be simplified to them just being assholes?
      Also rewriting the story to have Nezuko killed at the beginning would just make Demon Slayer a generic revenge story, making it a generic manga story would probably result in weaker sales. Making this conversation moot.

      @@woodchuck003 -- they literally do easily emphasize with her though. She's not killed at the start because of familiar trust, despite (I forgot his name, Water Hashira) having zero ties to either sibling.. the entire group of Harisha wait for Tanjiro to defend her before *talking* about killing her. Wind guy tempts her with blood, to prove that she can handle it. Leader dude just says "tanjiro is nice. So nezuko must be nice!".. real fucking easy.
      it doesn't ruin anything.. they do discrimate against her cuz demon, but they also.offer her every chance to be the one special demon.
      Also just no, on your last point. Lol.
      nezuko is anime (style) appeal, if she was completely removed, it would be a revenge story, or a story where tanjiro still wants to help others. We're not changing his character or the basis of the story (killing demons)..
      But nezuko is so unimportant to this entire story, Tanjiro cares for her, but he also still wants to save others and grow from that. Would sales drop? Probably not. Demon Slayer wasn't popular as a Manga, it wasn't bad, but not good. The anime blew it the fuck up for some pretty obvious reasons now, and not during its Manga phase.
      Does a cute submissive anime waifu help anime sales? Yeah totally. That's just factually proven.
      Is the story dependant on nezuko? Not at all. She's passive, not urgent.. the *only* change she's ever created in the show, is with this last fight.
      Season 1 ended with a family fight, tanjiro could relate regardless of nezuko. He had family too and lost them. No other point in Season 1, depends on nezuko, Tanjiro wouldn't even have conflict with the Hashira, which doesn't matter since he was accepted.
      Season 2 ended with a brother sister fight. Except tanjiro and nezuko didn't work together. But the character moment was afforded pretty well, IMO. THAT couldn't happen the same if Nezuko was dead, but its still family for tanjiro. It's less impact full, but nezuko herself didn't create that. She stands there and does nothing. Tanjiro is the one to care
      Oh also, nezuko gets magic healing powers cuz I don't fucking know why. Why just removed the poison aspect? No difference in the fight since uzui doesn't care and tanjiro got stabbed many times already..

    I just finished season 1 because I was forced to. Demon Slayer is a pain in my ass. I've never seen an anime so boring and so bad written. Most of the characters are annoying as hell, Tanjiro in the front. I just can't stand him and his empathic persona doesn't feel true to me, especially with his fellow humans peers. I would agree that I feel full empathy for the demons. But for the humans ? They are way too cliche and boring. I would have love to follow Nezuko's journey and I feel like the author has just pick the wrong story to tell. And your video only confirm what I felt : Nezuko is just a plot device with no actual impact on the story. Even when she could fight because it's time, like, for example, against the spider guy, she just stay in her box because the plot doesn't need her. And when she does, it's for Tanjiro to get mad and beat the bad guy. And their siblings bond doesn't click either. Here's Tanjiro saying he can't leave Nezuko alone because she can't fend for herself but when Muzan's scent comes his way, sure, no problem abandoning his little sister in a dark alley to confront the bad guy so powerful everybody fears him. But sure, no risk of it being a trap or to be killed... And we never see them bond at all. Nezuko is always asleep or doesn't express herself. And now that you're pointing that out, she can't even think by herself. I already thought pushing Tanjiro into an exam when he interact with no one important so stupid (like, if it was to kill that specific demon, just do it at home, it saves us time and character who will only become relevant couples of episodes after) but this... It may be because I already read or watch animes who handle all of these themes way better (like Full Metal Alchemist on the sibling matter, Al being as important as Ed and not the tool device to save) but I don't see why people are enjoying it so much. Good animation ain't shit if your story doesn't touch me. Especially since I can't watch it at top quality because of my internet. And even then, the animation isn't that good all the time (like that scene when our 3 characters are running to the mountain of the spiders, come on !)
    Anyway, I know I might offense people but I'd prefer losing my time on other better shows and manga. The only thing that will keep me watching it is Muzan. I already have echoes on the ending so I'm not hoping for much but I dream of Muzan just killing of Tanjiro.
