      @@enraversadi2903 There was something in the video bothering me...
      in the background on the wall... There is a particular character... she is naked amongst all these other clothed characters. ( I assume Rias Grimory from High School DxD)
      WHO IS THAT. I don't know why I need to know, but she stands out too much for me to let it go! It looks like she has a red scarf on and her hands in front of her breasts.

    This video made 2 things very clear to me:
    1. I am level 2 autism.
    2. Level 2 autism is the end of being able to present yourself as "normal" to greater society, and anyone deeper will have to work very hard in their life to adjust the way they talk and present themselves to get the same kind of acceptance. Much in the way Digi has, and yet even Digi is still Digi.

    • @MikadoHa
      @MikadoHa 4 года назад +24

      Idk, based on this video I should be like 3.5 but I don't have any problems with functioning in society and I was never diagnosed with any kind of autism.
      On the other hand, I do understand how autistic people feel and have trouble with figuring out romantic relationships so maybe I am an autist.

    • @calcadacorsova6725
      @calcadacorsova6725 4 года назад +14

      @Demencia
      The way I view autism it’s not one sliding scale but more like thousands of really specific ones.* Digi’s scale takes account of stuff like obsession and ability to relate to people but less stuff like patterns and IRL interactions because it’s not so relevant to anime.
      @MBase
      I know someone who might be a 4, 5, or 6 and got diagnosed at 4. So they were taught about autism for years and they were the one who told me I was autistic and came up with *the thousands of sliders analogy.
      Now you only really see their autistic side in the insane spreadsheet worldbuilding S*** they do in their spare time, and I’d put them at a 1 or 0 for interacting with society.

    I loved this video. That been said, I'm in the spectrum myself and I'm VERY autistic about Autism, so I'll hold myself to not over-correct everything but I just want to say that autism is a neurobiological condition, not psychological, not a personal trait of weirdness. But in this more broad and funny meaning of the word, I think you nailed describing the autistic mindset, at least from my experience. I woulded be more specific differentiating the autistic appeal from other non mainstream like ironic consumption, meta-comments, etc. I think Jojo's is specially autistic for some reason, and from what I know, people watch My Little Pony in a very autistic way. Also, I try not to think of each of my interests as the result of my autism, but I think a reason I enjoy anime is the simple and strong narrative behind most series and movies. Is not just the tropes and the common places, is something implied behind it, even when it is subverted, and that makes it easer to enjoy the little things, the details, the designs, etc.

    So, I am a hard level 5 autist. I obsess over every detail of big, sprawling universes like Homestuck, Touhou, and Pokemon, all their inner workings and rules, all their myriad character relationships and how I might relate to specific characters. I often obsess over a specific character because I can see myself in them the most. I will spend days or weeks at a time building massive lists and spreadsheets, reading and editing wiki pages. I have probably spent tens of thousands of hours on Bulbapedia for instance. I've never been able to relate to normies and I was bullied constantly while growing up. I have great difficulty using and understanding nonverbal communication. I'm rarely able to get a job let alone keep one and have more or less resigned myself to living on autismbux until I get married again, to someone who can deal with my autism. My favorite animes are generally idol shows, magical girl shows, and Pokemon. I'm fluent in Japanese because of this (though I studied textbooks a lot as well). I kind of wish I were capable of contributing to society in any tiny way. I think autists are the most pure and beautiful people though. Thanks for the vid.

    I used to watch movies in order to check them off of a list. I would literally spend multiple hours a day bored out of my mind in front of a movie just to get the dopamine of having completed it. What autism level am I? Oh yeah and I also stopped watching anime for 3 years so I could become fluent in Japanese before I started watching anime again because I didn't want to "ruin" it by not understanding it. I got fluent by watching thousands of hours of Japanese idol variety shows while I didn't allow myself to watch anime.

      Recently (less than a year ago) I started learning japanese completely on my own, with the intention of getting closer to achieving the goal of being able to play JRPGs untranslated, something I've wanted to do since I was a teenager, but never did any effort towards achieving because of a mix of lazyness and lack of confidence. I didn't stop watching anime and I didn't care if I ever became capable of listing to anime without subtitles, however, I couldn't help pausing episodes from time to time to check if I understood certain words or entire sentences correctly, more and more frequently each time. It got so bad I started downloading japanese subtitles for the anime I watch to read alongside the ones hard-edited into the episodes in my native language (spanish).
      I think it's worth noting that I learned all primary school kanji way before I took a single lesson of grammar. I looked up as many strategies to memorize kanji as effectively as possible, but other than that it was me memorizing everything I could vebatim, without even knowing if the words I was learning were nouns, verbs or adjevtives, or which type they were, though I think I'm pretty advanced in grammar right now as well. Considering how far I got in less than a year, I wonder if I'm a level 6 or higher in the scale.
      ...I still can't "hear" the language though, since just about 90% of my study material is text only.

    I feel like this is more about stereotypically male autism though, I find that females with autism tend to care more about the nuances of characters personalities and their relationships with each other, imagining different scenarios between their favorite characters and what not. Kinda like how men with autism tend to be more into science or math but women with autism are more into art or music (of course not always, but generally). For example, my sister is SUPER into kingdom hearts. It's probably her favorite thing of all time, but she hasn't even played all the games. Most of them, she just watched me play. She's more into the characters and their personalities/relationships as the story goes on.

But I never really received appropriate counseling, they kinda treated that as ocd, social anxiety etc etc. Later in college i have suffered a complete burn out and p much became unable to interact with others, could barely function by myself, I again got treated for the wrong thing, which was depression (I mean I must had some of it too but that wasn't the main thing!). It only got better for me when I started adjusting my life to my needs not the other way around... I guess I am functioning as a level 3 but my tastes are more like level 4. Nobody ever really understands why I enjoy the things I do and esp for which reasons exactly. I often don't know myself but visual symbolism is a big thing for me i will cling to for a long time.

    Thank you for bringing up fanfiction and how it factors into the scale! From the introduction, I had some quibbles with the "database" view of autism and anime fandom, since it seems - and please don't call me an SJW- very dude-centric. I think male fans (of any medium) are on the whole way more into categorizing and storing specific (often niche) information: remembering minor plot points in detail, keeping track of people involved in production, collecting figurines, etc. Fangirls don't do that nearly as much, so any view of autism in fandom that boils down to "how many xxx have you memorized and how often do you apply them?" will be way more targeted to dudes. But fanfic is almost entirely a female thing, so thanks for drawing the connection, it made the rest of the video much more comprehensible.

    • @Inter-VersaL
      @Inter-VersaL 4 года назад +7

      Hey, a lot of guys write fanfic too (me amongst them). Though I do believe there is a distinct "feel" that distinguishes guy fanfic from girl fanfic. More specifically, the former (you can find these more often in sites like Spacebattles & Sufficient Velocity) seem to lean harder on the database element mentioned by Digi, with plots like more detail added to the worldbuilding, characters learning new powers, applying their powers in novel ways, or by comparing & contrasting two different fictions (e. g. writing a crossover and extrapolating how the magic systems interact, or who would win in a fight, etc.). Girl fanfic, on the other hand seem to more on exploring relationships. Shipping and all that, with way less focus on fighting or worldbuilding. There are fanfic that combine the two approaches, though. A good example would be "Harry and the Shipgirls", a Harry Potter / Kantai Collection crossover posted on Spacebattles & Sufficient Velocity.

    I feel like the saving at every option in a visual novel meaning you're level 4 is flawed.
    For me, that is something that is learned instead of something I just do. The first time I played a visual novel, I saved my game only to find myself in a dead end. That meant that I had to restart the game from the beginning and get to the last choice before I saved and then choose the other choice.
    I save at every option so I don't have to restart my entire game if I chose incorrectly. In other words, laziness

    The thing I find intriguing about this system of categorization is how it accounts for the possibility that multiple people can enjoy the same shows for entirely different reasons. The issue I see with it is that it's nearly impossible to cleanly rank a show in a certain level of your scale, as I have no way of understanding how a certain show appeals to someone on a different level on the scale.
    For instance, I like Railgun and MtG, but honestly wouldn't place them at level 4 because I don't think their "spreadsheetness" is their only appeal. At the same time, I wouldn't rank FMA: Brotherhood at 0.5, because to me one of the main intrigues of the show is how its entire power system and everything that comes with it is build on one single concept - equivalent exchange - and just how far you can take that one single concept is a very spreadsheet-esque question. That it has a great consistent story and good production quality is just the cherry on top, but I'd also watch it if it were "less good". I think it wouldn't be the highest rated show on MAL if it didn't also appeal to higher levels of your scale in some form.

    Seems really quite accurate, just as I expected.
    My favorite anime off the very top of my head are basically the Monogatari series, NGE, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, K-on!, Lucky Star, stuff akin to that.
    For whatever reason, I also LOVED Railgun and Girls und Panzer. I don't know where Shirobako would fall on the 'tism scale, but it's one of the only anime where I got emotional, due to personal reasons, mainly Ema's struggle as a visual artist, but I think the reason I watched it initially was due to the industry context. I also just love the sheer number of characters and shit going on. On the other hand, Great Teacher Onizuka and Steins;Gate is in my top 10's just from sheer quality and thematic merit.
    I'm also REALLY into the creators behind anime and media in general, sometimes as much or more than the media itself. I'm watching the SoulTaker right now just because I love Shinbo's shit. I'm also one of those people who absolutely must know the voice and production staff of whatever show they're watching and derives great joy from "spotting" what kind of seiyuu and staff worked on any given show. I've watched all your long shit like the Shinbo videos or the entire SAO and Assterisk War series, as in sat through them and really listened.
    I did laugh at the point about saving before every choice in a game; because I thought everyone else does that.
    Videogame wise, I've got really gripped by some compelling narratives like NieR Automata which I played through in basically two 10 - 20 hour long sessions unlike anything I'd done before, but in terms of long term enjoyment I gravitate towards stuff like competitive skill based games where you need to grind some technique or know some shit, RTS games and literal spreadsheets like Factorio, with which I once spent an entire week doing nothing but 16 hour long playsessions straight.
    So how autistic am I based on this? Probably a 3.5, like you claim you are. Which makes perfect sense, because I'm yet to get a bad anime recommendation from you, so logically similar stuff would resonate. On that note, I loved Clannad though, which I don't understand why exactly you dislike even when you've explained it, but honestly I like it almost entirely due to personal reasons, even if the writing is wonky or whatever the issue with it is. I guess that's pretty fuckin' autistic too.

    Level 1: Naruto, Bleach, 1 piece, Dragonball
    Level 1.5: Keeping track of power levels, power scaling, power creep, ect. mostly in shounen.
    Level 2: Story structure and tight plots become more important. Plot heavy shows. Stein's gate. Also enjoying a shounen by identifying with 1 of the factions.
    Level 3: 55% of enjoyment comes from the meta surrounding a show; how it comments on other shows. 45% about the plot/narrative. Evangelion and Monogateri. You like a show more after watching a video essay about it on youtube.
    Level 4: 75% about the meta. 25% about enjoyment of plot.
    Level 5: 100% about the meta. 0% enjoyment from plot.
    Level 6: Enjoyment of a show is massively determined by fan art, fanfictions, AMVs, ect. Low Functioning Autism. Level 6 autists cannot understand each other when they talk.
    Level 7: Level 6 but with even fewer social skills. Usually obsessed with just 1 thing.

    I found this to be an interesting and thought provoking topic. This is the kind of content that Digi seems to be good at making. HOWEVER one big problem I had was that it didn't define Autism and the Autism levels well enough. Before going into vague ideas like "Database" and narrative, I think the video would benefit GREATLY if Digi explained to us exactly what he meant by Autism. First explain Autism, then give an EXAMPLE of a PERSON with level 1 Autism, show us how he might interact in real life etc, on and on for each level. Then go into what kind of media that person would enjoy and how it relates to anime and anime Autism levels. I had to go on Google to look up Autism levels, but with no prior experience of Autism it was very hard to parse out exactly how these Googled definition fit into the context of the video. I was also unsure if Digi was even referencing the same definitions I found. This is, in my opinion, a HUGE failing of this video. I shouldn't be left with a vague understanding of Autism and hoping that Digi is talking about the same concepts I'm thinking about lol. Granted there were some explanations, but I found them insufficient to fully understand the video. Heck I'm left wondering if I'm a level 1 or 2 autistic person myself at this point.

    ...Uh oh, when you mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog like that... I realized, I do that. For Sonic and Mega Man, those are my things. I can just think of them anytime, and be satisfied. There's so much I could think about, about them. I do that music shifting thing for their songs, and even though there's so many games I don't feel a need to go too "wide" with it, I tend to just focus on the same songs. The fact that those series exist at all, is enough to impress me, let alone that new games are being made for it which is wonderful but I'd be stuck on these series regardless of if they were no longer made or not.
    Further, I make pen-and-paper strategy games on these series, and I don't publish or share them at all because I don't feel the need to, though I happily meta-balance the games to the most exacting detail. Regarding the video games themselves, I replay them all the time, sometimes in the same way as usual, sometimes in slightly different ways, but to me it's just the sensation of playing them that matters; I don't have such concrete goals as "oh I want to improve how quickly I can run through it this time!", I just manifest myself through the game in whatever way feels natural at the moment.
    Oh but I don't want anyone to see this and worry about me, I'm fine! I've learned to function irl very nicely, even though I had a very difficult time connecting with others as a youth; hell, if I didn't eventually get obsessed with the analysis of peoples' motivations (psychology sociology anthropology) as well as the subject of logic (to round out how I should best respond to situations) in general, I might still be quite lost. It took me until age 20 to meaningfully "get it".
    Also my career field is that I'm aspiring to be a Mathematician, so make of that what you will!

      Same here with the music shifting, I even transcribed the whole soundtrack from Sonic 2-Sonic and Knuckles by ear back in middle school just because I love the music so much, never gets old. I feel the same way as you described about socially functioning irl and all that, really cool to see your similar experience with the music and games though

    Interesting that the importance of well-constructed and thematic narrative seems like a sort of bell curve, most important for those in the middle of this scale and less for both the superficial masses and heavy autists. I'm the kind of guy who freaks out over what I see as clever writing, interesting symbolism, and MUH THEMES (huge fan of the Chimera Ant and Succession War arcs of HxH) so I suppose that's where I'm at.

      Serious question. Can you explain why you like the chimera arc so much? I remember just outright hating it and loving everything else. I am rewatching so maybe my perspective will change, but I am legit curious. I'll go ahead and state what I remember about why I didn't like it.
      Power spikes went up to DBZ levels
      didn't focus on Gon, Killua, or hell even Leorio, or Kurapika much or at all.
      Gon went rage mode over a person he met's "tragic death" but that didn't happen much otherwise with anyone else.
      furry bait kind of?
      Dragged on the longest.
      that's about it.

      DiaMD Yeah I found that interesting. I’m the kind of person who did not enjoy Kimi No Na Wa because of how little sense the time travel made. However, I can look past plot holes if I enjoy other parts of the work (JoJo’s is probably the most extreme example). My favorite shows are probably Steins;Gate and Hunter x Hunter for the same reason.

      @@Bug_Berry That's level 2 thinking. At level 4, the chimera arc, especially the palace invasion, is catnip. It takes a scene that lasts minutes in real time, and in obsessive detail catalogs what every character is doing and thinking. I don't agree with your criticisms, but that doesn't matter. Even if the narrative wasn't amazing, the chimera arc would still be the best thing ever.

    • @diamd3931
      @diamd3931 4 года назад +4

      @@Bug_Berry I'll try to put the appeal succinctly into words as best I can: The arc's climax is famous for being an exhaustive analysis of a rather short span of time from over a dozen different characters' perspectives (Digi has a whole video describing it as chaos theory in storytelling). Meanwhile, all of the mechanics involved are logically sound, character actions are all feasible thanks to the amount of info you're given on their personalities and states of mind, and there are more than enough "badass" as well as highly emotional moments to keep people all over Digi's autism scale hooked (see Netero vs. Meruem, Dragon Dive, Godspeed Killua, Gon-san vs. Pitou, and Meruem and Komugi's last moments for some examples). Throughout all of this is a depth of writing and thematic richness that left me rather impressed (see Meruem's conundrum of his identity, how each RG identifies him differently, the evolution and devolution of Youpi's respect for humanity, Pouf's loyalty driving him to near insanity, and all of Netero's Buddhism associations for instance). That's most of the appeal as I see it, now I'll address your specific points:
      Apparent power levels increased dramatically in the case of Meruem, the RGs, Netero, and Gon-san, but this makes sense in every case. Knowing the phagogenesis properties of the chimera ants it is no wonder why their king and RGs are so incredibly strong. As for Netero, he is the chairman of the entire hunter association, was established as a monster since the hunter exam arc, and his flashback when he falls from the sky frames him as a downright martial arts legend. I could understand if you had some reservations about Gon-san, but Gon has always been known to have insane potential, the restriction mechanism was well set-up since Yorknew, and the transformation is thoroughly foreshadowed by following Gon's emotional state throughout the arc. I would also say that Togashi spits in the face of DBZ powerlevels when the chimera ants die slow unimpressive deaths to poison, Netero's strength isn't enough so he needs to use a fucking nuke, and Gon vs. Pitou is not framed as a triumphant victory for the protagonists at all, much the opposite. Additionally, if you follow the manga it seems clear that the chimera ants and Nanika (Ai) serve as preparation for what lies on the dark continent, as both came from there, so it's understandable for power levels to jump somewhat considering how insanely dangerous a place that is.
      As for why Gon was so affected by Kite's death, the 2011 anime really dropped the ball on the guy but he's the very first character to appear in the manga and the only reason Gon knows about his father and aspires to become a hunter, sort of like a second father figure for him in the absence of Ging. Gon is also a child who has never experienced grief before, and so takes it rather badly. As for Killua, he gets a ton of attention as well throughout the arc, what with overcoming Illumi's needle influence, doubting whether or not he is a good friend to Gon, and breaking down in front of Palm when he gives in to how badly he just wants his friend to be alright. More of Killua's stuff is settled in the following election arc too. Kurapika and Leorio are much more prominent in the arc following that if you're curious about what they're up to.
      Some of the chimera ant designs aren't really that great admittedly, Rammot is probably the worst offender, but by the time the palace invasion occurs every one of them still around looks fine in my opinion. I've never heard of any furries gushing about this arc, the closest thing would be Pitou's waifu popularity I guess. It is also definitely rather long, but I'd say that all of the payoffs in the climax, as well as moments like looking at the Phantom Troupe defending Meteor City, make it well worth it. I'm sure typing all this out has bumped me up to at least a 4 on Digi's scale, but here's your answer.

    That disclaimer about how “autistic” is mostly being used as “just a label” should really have been closer to the beginning if the video, if not at the start, rather than towards the end; as I feel that such use is very much a misnomer. For the entire video until that point It seemed like you were conflating autism with a much broader phenomenon that, while autism can push one further through the levels, is not populated solely by those who are at a given level (except 6 & 7 (and maybe the further echelons of 5)) due to autistic tendencies. (Though, I agree with the implied “Level 0 is the least common denominator.”) A feeling I can describe in retrospect as “You don’t /really/ mean ‘austism’.”
    I also feel like the the different levels differ more in kind than in magnitude (at least until 5, 6, and 7); though, I can see why someone more prone to obsessing over work would be more likely to fall within a higher-numbered “level”.
    And by merely writing this, I’ve probably given away my position on said scale. 😃

      @@FluxerCry As someone pretty low on this scale, it definitely doesn't come across as "making light of autism" to me. It's a fairly interesting insight into how normies can enjoy schlock, and how people further on the spectrum can enjoy works that might seem bad otherwise like Sonic or Thomas the Tank Engine. IMO the big issue with the video is just that it's inconsistent. Database theory -> Tropey unrealistic characters -> Childhood Impression seem more like three different ways to look at this than one unifying theory.

    Now, this triggered some very specific memories for me. Back in upper secondary, anytime my best friend wanted to know something about a movie or show (director, actors, release date, continuity in a franchise) he asked me, because to him, one of my distinct quirks was spending a lot of time on Wikipedia *reading* about movies, no matter if I'd seen them or not. Which I hadn't even thought of as a strange thing to do.
    Besides that, this reminds me of the old fanboy/fangirl dichotomy. Memorizing everything and knowing the canon in and out = Fanboy, making fanfiction and shipping characters between different franchises = Fangirl. How would you categorize these behviours according to your thesis?
