I mean, what you're describing is basically an anime version of a book club. Honestly I think that could be cool. We take people, and have someone share a new movie, series, creator, etc. every month or so, then we discuss. Why not make a discord for that or something? I'd be down.

Morally, I agree with you, given how art is a machine these days. But you shouldn't wonder why people with jobs they tend to hate come home and want to relax with their limited free time would be overly cautious about what media they consume. You don't live that life anymore, you've ascended to making it your job to explore, most people can't even fathom that. They'd rather just watch a personality regurgitate their voice at them while they play games so they can stay part of the community zeitgeist without actually dipping their feet too far in. It's too unfamiliar to do anything else, and I gotta be up for work in the morning.

    • @hankjones7054
      @hankjones7054 4 года назад +7

Consuming media is not the most important thing in life. When you come home from work and have your dinner you might want something quick and tasty you know you'll like, not an ultra complex dish that might be some of the finest food you ever eat. When you book your one holiday a year you're more likely to choose the best reviewed or most famous places or destinations you're familiar with, not explore an obscure village in Mongolia that might lead to spiritual revelation.

Hey Digi, haven't been a fan of yours for long, but I super dig this video. As a guy who just loves to explore the deepest depths for buried treasure, I love a good retrospect video that gives a little more substance to the discussion of old stuff beyond "X was good/bad." Your video on Apocalypse Zero (which I had seen before your video) was one such example. M's B has done a couple such videos too believe it or not. The one that sticks pit in my mind was about Highschool Of The Dead. Stuff that points me in the direction of a new old thing that I might really love or that helps me better understand something I'm already familiar with is super fascinating to me. So from one curator to another, keep up the good work.

I don't care about watching whats trending and famous at the moment at all. First because I almost never discuss it with somebody anyways, and even when I do it's some small discussion that don't pay off the time spent by itself. Second because I don't like it as much as the things I trully care about and most people don't know of, like you said.
I think the best influence you had on me was exactly making me go find things that resonate with me no matter of what time it is, and I'm very luck that I can resonate with you taste a lot on anime for that matter.

I think anitubers nearly always talking about what's hot is a clear sign they just want fame and money. It's not bad to do it sometimes but as a critic, you should look outside of the mainstream for quality works and it's actually more important to share those because they're the ones that need more recognition. Guys like MB and Gigguk have a whole lot of influence over the anime community and would be able to share many obscure titles if they wanted to but they pretty much just shill whatever's hot or what their sponsors want them to. It's pretty clear from how they hardly cared about Demon Slayer before but the moment it started trending on Twitter, they suddenly started making all these videos on it.
Interesting idea in sharing obscure titles through videos with broad topics like "top X shows you never heard of" however, it's a difficult road particularly for new anitubers since such broad topics are commonly done and it's hard for your own video to stand out from them. I guess I can still consider them for sometime later though. What I'm personally aiming for right now is to find all these obscure manga I'm interested in talking about and make videos for each of them. Sure, I won't get many views right away but what I'm hoping if for some fans who already know about a certain obscure title to look it up on youtube to see if anyone's talking about it and find my video, surprised to see a channel that does. That may get them interested and think "If this guy knows about this series, I wonder other obscure series he may know about" and check out more content.
It's kind of a way to share interests between like minds. It's something I personally do sometimes on youtube, looking up obscure manga, so if there are more people like me out there, that would be nice. I would like to see more anitubers who make videos like this, I guess I know some and learning about them though. A certain anituber in the past did have this effect on me although his channel is gone for some reason now. Hopefully, this is a good way but having some mainstream stuff worth talking about now and again helps too.

This is an incredible video! You were able to put words to my thoughts about why I'm watching what everyone else is watching, I didn't have a concrete understanding why before. I'm not a huge fan of Dragonball or Naruto, but I watched literally everything there is about them (filler and movies) just so that I can understand random references I could come across, and to be able to share my opinion given the vast catalog of knowledge I've sucked up like a sponge. I keep watching random fan reviews or something just so that I can have an edge for conversation, and I do this for every show I've "finished" in such a manner. Hundreds of subreddits and discord channels and it's just daunting, but I still do it because I want to be a part of a group and not an outsider. Human psychology is hard to have personal control over, I guess.

I remember when you made your "request stuff to each other" reddit thread a while back. One of the requests was one of the most interesting games I've played, not that good, but VERY interesting nevertheless! (It was Mibili's Quest)
There was a time I went to a random anime club at a college which I don't go to once. I ended up talking to a stranger there and we started to exchange video game taste. He quickly noticed that my taste was very unique while his was more broad, he took interest in this and wanted to pinpoint what drew me to games. After a bit of back and forward he introduced a game that I not only already heard of, but was one of my favorites (I Wanna Be The Guy). After telling me he told me about another game (Distorted Travesty) and the concept intrigued me, I asked lots and lots of questions and he was passionate on telling me what parts of the game grabbed his attention and hoped I would feel the same. As a result of this long exchanged I remembered the name of the game and gave the game a whirl. It took a while for it to grow on me but I can safely say its one of the most unique games I've played while simutanueously playing to my tastes very strongly.
What I should elaborate is that this isn't the same as hearing about a game online, playing it, and then thinking "oh that was neat". This game felt special, not because it was some hidden 10/10 masterpiece, far from it, but because it was personally reccomended to me. That alone gave it more personality and weight, it felt more like what I was doing mattered, like I was a 14 year old again going on an adventure playing games outside my confort zone for the first time! I was exited to tell this new friend how much I liked the game he told me about, especially cause due to my very specific tastes, this feeling is VERY rare for me!
Unfortunately I never saw him again. The ride who took me too the club didn't feel like going back and I never got the guys contact cause I thought doing it after just meeting him would be too weird considering it was a weekly group. Nevertheless the experience taught me something important (tho a similar thing happened with I Wanna Be The Guy as well.)
People want to connect with each other, they want to feel like something bigger than themselves. For me that's christianity, but I know not everyone believes that. There's just something much more vivid about going out of your way to discuss art/anything with other people vs doing it online where there's very little risk going on at all...

I watch analysis videos mostly to find new stuff, I've been clued into hundreds of anime and hundreds of video games from following you and other content creators. I have a recurring thought that I should stop watching so much RUclips and just get to crackin' on these "to-watch" and "to-play" lists, considering I have a ton of games to play already and a nigh infinite amount of anime thanks to streaming sites, but I guess I'm just invested in the narrative of you and other content creators at this point.
I'm always aware that actually going out and experiencing those pieces of art will be far more gratifying than watching "filler content" over here but I guess I'm just scared out of progressing the lists since it's such a daunting task. I do find it hilarious though, the idea there are people out there who can't fathom watching a show because there's no current hype around it or that they NEED something to do with that experience after. Spoiler: When you get into a new game series or whatever you can go track down the fanbase subreddit or whatever (if you don't like reddit) and gel with the people there. Every time you get into a new franchise that you enjoy sufficiently you can go find swathes of new people to discuss it with and compare thoughts on! It's incredible.
I think this mainstream need for a community around an activity is the subconscious push against the modern era, the classic "We're more connected than ever but we're actually less connected?!?!" meme. I wish my friends would take some time away from multiplayer games to check out all these bangin' single player games I keep getting into, it's really a blast.

I actually go out of my way to watch stuff that I know won't be popular, or maybe even a lot of people will hate it if they know about it, but that I can find some value in. It's fun to watch shows that everyone is watching for the sake of conversation but I feel like I can only enjoy something if it's something that makes me a hipster for enjoying it. Two great examples from last year are Fairy Gone, a show from a completely new team that got a lot right and wrong with it; and Granbelm, a magical girl show whose mecha designs turned many people off but tells a fascinating dark magical girl story on par with Madoka Magicka. Idk if I just like feeling special or if I'm just naturally drawn towards things that break from the norm.

I think part of the problem, at least now, is the sheer profligation of algorithmic/SEO thinking. We've gotten so accustomed to marketing and big companies having control of the conversation, that now we subconsciously use those cues as our OWN cues for how we determine what to value, what to look into, and what we should like. Think about how long the conversation about current movies has been dominated by the MCU; we're looking at over a decade of consistently well-performing, easily advertised films that come out every few months without stopping. This is not to mention that almost every big movie that comes out now is produced and wholly owned by one or two large companies, chiefly Disney. Go ahead, try to name an especially well-selling and well-reviewed film in the last few years that wasn't made by DC, Warner Bros., or Fox, it's not very easy. On social media especially, we can't really get away from this kind of thinking, because the sites we use craft themselves in a way that makes it HARDER for us to break away. Look at the search function on RUclips for instance, you'll automatically be served results for more current and more optimized content the instant you start typing, meaning if you want to find older/more niche content, you have to put in more individual effort just to find it. Meanwhile, you bet your ass that you'll see Marvel content the instant you type the first letter of the name of any superhero with a movie out in the past or coming six months.
This is also why I think it's at least partially a fool's errand to try to break away from this on your own, with your own effort, without changing the culture around us and the platforms we use to participate in said culture. You talk about creating your own spaces, making your own conversations by making the content that drives said conversations. I won't dispute your point that this does sometimes happen, and Kemono Friends is a legitimately good example in your favor. However, since you're so aware of how the algorithm drives things here and how trending topics drive the conversation on other platforms like Twitter, you should also be aware that at least for someone of your reach, trying to make the conversation happen through force of will is akin to flailing the dark as a means of looking for someone. It may work by chance, but you're far better off lighting a match, which in this case means drastically changing the rules of the platforms we use and the laws which govern them.
On a lighter note, it seems Victor subs to Geoff for reasons similar to why I sub to Gigguk. I rarely agree with, or even highly care about, his opinions about shows or anime in general. However, I like viewing his content because he gives a very on-the-nose impression of how the average (I suppose "normie" although I hate that term) anime fan is seeing things at a given moment. I value getting a sense of that, and he's an easy conduit to find it.

I try to be a curator myself, but it's really hard to do that because even if I have them in my room saying "you need to watch this right now" and put it on for them, they're going to think "why am I taking time out of my day to come over to hang out with my friend only to sit down and watch a movie or something that I could (but won't) watch at home?" There's a huge hurtle of engagement to get over with most people. It seems like the only way you can actually curate to most people is to make a video saying "look at this cool thing and hear me talk about how cool it is (with just enough info to perk your interest to dig deeper but not so much that you think you got everything worthwhile there is to get just from hearing me talk about it)".
And it's really difficult to talk about something in very thorough depth without spoilers and/or would only make sense to people who already saw it. But if you're going out of your way to avoid doing that, it seems inefficient to do all that just for 1 show/film if the objective is to give recommendations, you may as well compile a top 10 list or something. But you can't just make a top 10 list or something out of any random collection of stuff you happen to like and think is more deserving of attention, you need some kind of theme to connect them together, like talking about a specific genre/trope or the career of a particular creative staff.

Critics have a part in catering content, but what are the criterias for a critic? Is it based on passion, experience, or knowledge? Any one of those things can land you with the title. The interest for a product doesnt just appear its word of mouth; not just because of marketing push or content creators chasing trends. Those things widen appeal but aren't the cause of interest in a product. For star wars and marvel It's the years of films, shows, games, books, the people behind it all. Iron man came out and it wssnt a world changing event it was just a really good superhero movie. When star wars first came out there was no huge multimedia marketing push. It was just a genre of film people didn't know they would be interested in. Scifi fantasy films back then were never a great bet especially on the fantasy side. Fantasy motion pictures were the films tanking studios because there wasnt an interest and because they weren't great. The lord of the rings changed that, and then it became a big event. After showing the interest was there for fantasy movies like this.
Things dont trend in a vacuum theres no predetermined trending topics that burst into existence and land on the trending tab out of the basis of being big. Interest comes first, you're not interested that's totally fine. The best part of this digital media age is that niche entertainment and products dont need to be on the trending page or have a multimedia presence to have consumer interest and be successful. And very often, to the detriment of your argument, you say quite frequently these niche products become huge through word of mouth and sheer quality. That's how almost any media product starts. Trying to drum up media interest purely on advertising and chasing trends doesnt translate well. It's fake and people react very poorly to those attempts. And putting everything you're not interested in in some absent of spacetime then youre point wouldve been ok. But saying "big" things have appeal only because theyre "big" is just goin in circles. Things become popular because people are interested and see the appeal and tell other people and then those people go online and discuss it. You seem to be criticizing specific ways people consume media as being wrong or right, and that's your problem. The zeitgeist starts somewhere theres a personal investment of time and money and going with other people that defines those experiences that grows exponentially. If marvel movies weren't huge would you watch them? If they were unpopular and bad would you be trying to dig them up? Everything you brought up about community and creators making interesting things is already happening and it's pretty successful with channels doing what you do with more views, better production, and more subscribers. You're just not looking.

And for many of us who are less media obsessed, watching a RUclips video is just lower friction than watching the actual series. I can't really read subs while working out, after all. I used to trust MAL scores on drama shows (because people tend to relate to them better and if these shows don't work on them, then they should be really bad), but the last season showed a strange trend of good shows staying underground - No Guns Life, Babylon and Blade of the Immortal. I watched K-On! because of you. I thought it wasn't my cup of tea until you started describing how good it actually is.
I think by giving a certain specific kind of context for (e.g.) an anime, you can actually affect how people experience the anime. By "priming" them for certain things, you basically teach them how to spot the good things in it. You teach them how to enjoy something.
I noticed this when I recommended music to people. If I preface it with a story about why I like it and what the lyrics mean to me, they're way more likelier to like it too.
This is why I think spoilers are demonised too much. If a spoiler ruins an anime, it's not well-written. If an anime is only good because of the sudden twist, it's not well-written. If something is well-written, you can enjoy how well the twist appears even if you see it coming. Or rather, ESPECIALLY when you see it coming. Cuz then you can see all the build-up that's missed when you don't know yet.
I hope you can do more of these types of reviews. Ones where you, like with K-On!, teach people how to like something, what's so good about it. You are a huge reason why I'm now so good at digesting and understanding art. Well, you and Jesse of course, but mainly you cuz you even taught me how to get into him. I had to push myself to watch the entire Horseshoe Saga and then I was hooked and I've seen that entire thing like 5 times now and I think I have a pretty good grasp of what he meant now (partially cuz, as an aspiring author, I relate to a lot of that).
Now that I'm rambling anyway, might I sneakily suggest giving A Certain Magical Index another go? While I prefer Railgun cuz imo the world-building is better and the characters are more enjoyable to see, Index has some fascinating themes to them. The way I see it, Touma is meant to be a misunderstood gifted kid who society can't accept. There are two sides of the world and he belongs to neither, he has to make his own faction (the Touma Faction, which actually is a real thing in the story). Even though he's convinced he's nothing special, his raw talent lets him do ridiculous things (like that fight with Accelerator, which then was the key event that changed Accelerator from a heartless evil villain to just a hurt kid who's been hurt by the world but who secretly does care about people, like the Sisters). His Touma-Punch quite literally erases delusions people have, except it's not the power that does that. It's him. He shows the villains the wrong in their thinking and then wins the fight against them to show just how flawed their way of thinking is. All the villains are well-written and have good believable motivations and he recognises this.
Just something I've been thinking about. Perhaps someday I'll start a youtube channel and turn this into a video. I just can't be assed getting into video editing.

Exactly there are plenty of creators doing exactly what he wants to happen and they've been doing it for years. He complains that no one is consuming critics content correctly, but that creators are just chasing trends and not talking about what interests. And yeah? Those are shitty channels and I'm not interested in them, supereyepatchwolf, gigguk, teamfourstar, funhaus, angry video game nerd, pewdiepie, redlettermedia....Theres tons of media channels with communities and who are putting their interests and finding great things new AND old without some weird vitriolic attitude towards popular things. They do that and attract a huge following because it's good content they like, not because its new.
When the only critique he has was they're "big" and "new". That isnt being a critic that's being a commentator. Describing things without going into the why is what a commentator or a radio host does. He uses his anecdotal evidence of his brother wanting him to cover more popular shows, and another youtube creator he knows outsourcing trend reports tp determine his next video. Like it's so obvious his brother just wants to hear his opinion and maybe help him get more exposure by talking about more anime instead of two specific subgenres of a niche genre for the past two years. And it's super obvious the channel just making content based on what's trending is a shitty uninspired channel.

There's also the point that there's a shit ton of new shows coming out each season, so many people may never really feel the need to go back and look for older shows that they might enjoy. This applies to other stuff like video games and such too. It's been my opinion for a long time that most people are pretty much just casual fans and usually won't make that kind of extra effort to dig deeper.

say what you will about r/anime, but without their first-timer-friendly rewatch community I'd have probably stuck to watching nothing but seasonals until I burned out on anime entirely. they gave me the push to finally get around to classics like Samurai Champloo, Kino's Journey, Mushishi, Evangelion, and several others a few years ago. Hell, even now I'm watching Wolf's Rain with them. Not the most obscure stuff, but at least it got me deeper than surface level into this stuff.

I was having a convo with my nephew about game streaming about how he was playing Roblox and some other stuff to get viewers, and it was working. And I basically said “I’m too selfish to do something like that. I only play what I want to play.”.
So I feel this. Why cover stuff that’s already being covered to death that doesn’t resonate with you for the sake of popularity? Feels gross.

I don't get your Mother's Basement hate. Because I have subscribed to both of you, RUclips has shown me videos you did together in the past.

The Kinoplex on Fb is a pretty gud community for discussing film and shit (not necessarily anime) that isn't the most popular/new/hyped, there's also groups dedicated to old pre 2000s anime. They're small, but they're there

    3points
Your point about the fact that our interest is partly social remind me about jeff s video about binge watch and how it conflits with the social watching expérience.
Part of the reason why people stick only to seasonal anime apart from what you said is that you don t want to miss a new classic:sure there are old things that are proofed and thought provoking, but watching the new stuff feels a bit like an adventure.
When I started being a huge anime watcher, i would pick a show out of an alphabetic lust at random and generally not care about when it was made.its only xhen i was deep into the commu that new ones took a huge part(right now i don t watch much of either though:im more into games and i play both mainstream up to date thingy and games i heard good things about/good synopsis)
Group watch might be a solution although whenever i get asked to watch i almost don t want to just Because i am a contrarian.
I get that classics and old out of the boxes expériences are refreshing Because of their quality and because they go against the grain but this shouldn t be about opposing the mainstream to the outsiders.while they DO compete for your time, just being something generic isn t an automatic no:the world crafted might feel alive and unique even then.

I feel like reviewers have now taken on a third job this being entertainment in the form of tearing apart garbage (best of the worst, search for the worst, etc.)

I feel like it's important to talk about mediocre content even if it is famous, or else people will think you just forgot to talk about it. For instance, theneedledrop's reviews are all interesting and all the 5/10 or less that he gave on albums are interesting information, it can help you know if it is worth your time to listen to these albums or not, and if he didn't review those albums (especially popular or hyped up albums), you wouldn't know if he liked it or not.

Maybe it's just because I don't like people or care much for community, but the idea of getting into or not getting into something just for the sake of the community or being part of the conversation seems asinine to me.
