It's quite interesting to see that an old game has better game mechanics than 90% of the games made today. You would think things improve over time.
Mack's fond recollection of betraying his mate with an unprovoked nuclear attack made me laugh a lot more than it should.
Same with Supreme Commander FA, it's great!

I still love this game even though the last time I played it was back in like 2015.

Me and my buddies called the bit before battle "Peace time" we would agree or "Agree" to not steal each others resources and no attacking for an hour or so, made for some epic build ups and battles, such good memories!

Thank you for spreading the love for this incredible game. It was my childhood! I’m 31 and I still play this game every now and then on LAN parties. Unfortunately the game can’t handle a lot of units. :(

The best games stand the test of time. My personal all time favourite Jagged Alliance 2 still has an active modding community that have really turned the game the best squad turn-based RPG hybrid ever. It is nice to see that other old classics are in the same situation.
This was my first Command and Conquer game, and I loved it. The mods, from Rise of the Reds to Contra 009, are why this game is alive and kicking nowadays.
Frost Giant - a company founded by people who worked on starcraft 2 - is currently developing a new RTS.
I still play Renegade online. Probably my favorite C&C game. Granted there’s really only like 1 server populated (usually).

Taken me back to Empire Earth 2 with the peace time thing. Where we would have a 'city building' game and every player would keep to their corner, build their base and we would all amass an army, send it to the centre of the map and engage in massive battles and see who was left standing. Until we got bored and then someone would turn on your actual base and then it was all out war. Very good memories of old RTS'
A lot of fun with Zero Hour also, the laser gen. being my favourite, shooting one of your own turrets to extend its range.. Mad what you remember.
I played the Americans mainly with the fuel air bombs and stealth missile turrets. Happy days indeed

Basically a bunch of guys have got together to develop this as a response to the awful way the big studios have been acting over the past X years.
You cannot beat this game! I would love for them to upgrade the graphics, I did see a MOD video a long long time ago that looked like C&C Generals meets Battlefield Bad company, The expansion Zero hour was brilliant too
Have played this game since 2003. Contra is a very good mod, but my favorite mod is C&C Untitled, it's tough as hell!

The early rush is exactly why i only played comp stomps we all helped each other and could relatively relax knowing the AI would only keep spamming units against our base defences.
It was the best, we use to bring my mates over and set-up the PC's for the weekend over Lan
I learned a valuable lesson from this video... Watch your back around Mack!

Awesome news, thanks for letting us know Mack, Generals is my favorite RTS game of all time but i also like AOE and Starcraft. Think i will reinstall it, i forgot since i played it but there was a bug that lagged when u had too many troops and i don't remember if the update fixed it or caused it.
cnc red alert 2 has a good community still, I tried it and Zero hour after the video. So good!

These older games are so well made regarding gameplay, balance, etc. What else do you need?
0:25 - there are more fun games that are underrated and that are "want" to come back after many years, but again it will comes in the shadow. One of these is KNIGHTS OF HONOR. I can’t believe no major game reviewer has played that. It is inconceivable to me that very few people know about such a good game.
Mack, you like good smaller developers (although these are honestly not small now, but they want to bring that game back to life) I would ask you to pay attention and try Knights of Honor and their new game to be released after almost 20 years, Knights of Honor II: Sovereign...try that game and i think a lot of people regret missing it. I still play it today...
Theres multiple AI mods too that make it a real challenge, great micromanaging and unit usage.
One of the only games i keep coming back to every few months/years. Never liked multiplayer because i'm a turtle player and love taking my time. I wish they added new mods though that still keep the lore but are balanced and have a challenge mode and campaign mode like Shockwave.
You should definitely check out Generals Evolutions. It's a mod for Red Alert 3. Currently it's at version 0.3, but it's already at a stage that's awesome.
You can see how much has changed in the engine within those 5 years (ZH => RA3). With it being 0.3 I guess a lot of stuff is on the road map like the building system, etc.
But it's not intended to be a 1 on 1 clone anyway. Some things even seem to be intended to improve the gameplay.
Last update was February 2022, but the lead dev is located in Mariupol, ...

I've got the TFD box.
My dvd has a large crack that starts from the center hole and is almost getting to where the data is stored. That is to say that I just can't play the game anymore, w/o risking to lose it. And because my newest PC has no dvd drive too.
But, to quote the Hacker "I've got their codes". The original CD Keys are there.

If you’re enjoying revisiting the game I’d suggest trying the mods contra or shockwave. Both add enough to bring new excitement into the old formula and make the game feel a little fresh

I use to do that stuff on Starcraft. Always picked Protoss and told my teammate I would send my carriers up shortly after he attacked... Then I attacked my teammate and won the game while he lost.

Command & Conquer Generals still has a very active modding community.
There are still maps been made for the Command & Conquer remaster that recently had been released.
There are some nice maps.
The reason I never got into the competitive scene for RTS games is specifically because of the "rush" meta strategy. It's not fun, you don't get to see the higher tiers of units, and it makes for lame battles that are over before anything exciting can happen.
I looked for no rush 15 lobbies back in the day. Any lobby that did not have that rule was assumed to have rush strats. No rush 4v4s were a fun mess as everyone brought in their big guns and huge armies.
@@GoldPile I wish I had known then what I know now about how to search lobbies. I sometimes feel like I missed out on a lot of fun with a game I enjoyed.
Red alert 2 is in my top five games ever.
Best game of all time. EA should make remastered version of this masterpiece.
Unlikely as games like these requires people using their brains which goes against the push to dumb us down.
If it does happen, it will probably have stuff like x-ray vision and stuff like that. Oh and mirco-transactions too so that you'll have to spend real money on the fuel for the tanks.
Using vpn settings to play LAN games over the internet is heartwarming. Just be careful what you connect to, as some vpns let the remote side connect to parts of your system as well. But as long as people are using that in good faith, that's an oldschool power-move.
The "Command & Conquer Community" Group on Facebook is also pretty active, with about 30K members. People are basically posting everyday there.
You forgot to mention there is a tone of awesome mods for the game too. Like contra! big overhauls of the generals with tones of added unit's factions etc.. ZH didnt really die.

The only issue i got with Generals is how laggy it gets after an hour of non stop action. The games even break down... we need a proper remaster.
I wish we would get a remaster of this.
Feel the same way, tank rushing or whatever rushing I don't find fun, we would do similar and have a 10 to 15 minute before attacking, sometimes longer which make the games more interesting to me do this in all RTS like AOE etc. It does create games that can take hours but it really makes you use more than just blitzkrieg offensive stradegy.
The good old command and conquer series, always remember doing world domination on red alert 2. Man I miss that, also reaching rank 2 on red alert 2 ladder my greatest life achievement! Haha
Generals and Emperor: Battle for Dune. I have fond memories of those.

A suggestion for a retro review : Lord of The Rings : Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2. Both games also have an active community still that also uses the revora servers to play online

I used to do tank rush in RTS games on multiplayer... But it's not fun for me and the other players. So I just do whatever even if it cost me the game just for fun.

If it wasn’t for Yuris Revenge, Zero Hour would of been my favourite C&C DLC. Generals as a base game was better than RA2 though.

So, interesting timing: I downloaded this game a couple months ago because I enjoyed it so much back in the day. I went to go back to play it a few days back and it's been removed from my computer. It's just gone. Can't even find its directory. Anybody experience this kind of thing before? It was a legit purchase (I don't _think_ it was Steam as they don't list Generals as available from them). But I'm pretty perturbed that content can be revoked off your computer like that post-download and installation. If that's a thing now, I certainly wasn't aware. Feels like a violation of privacy to reach back into your machine and revoke and remove it like that.

Generals hates windows or my pc.
Back in the day, my pc couldnt run it so i couldnt play. The moment i got a pc that could it was one of the windows that was "updated" and "better" so it couldnt run old games.

I remember being really disappointed with this. I like the older versions I played on PS1.
We did that on Lan matches for PS1 and then redalert 2 on pc lol. 30 mins then go hahaha good times x
Two of the biggest mods for Generals, Shockwave and Rise of the Reds, to this day still dominate the site's list for most popular mods of all time. Last time I looked, ROTR was like number 7. I only wish that team had finished their plans for 2.0.
