The AI in age of empires has different personalities. Like "defensive" "aggressive". Etc.
If you rolled the dice and got a game where all 3 AI are "extremely aggressive/expansionists" then you may get bum rushed like that.
I've had Intermediate A.I that throws Elephants and Seige weapons at walls and I've had Intermediate A.I that just sends archers. Very different A.I depending on the game.
I've not played a game yet where the AI isn't sending 2 units against me. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty as well

Yeah and I bet am the only reviewer that can be arsed to test the biggest driving game of the year out on a wheel and pedal system as well as controller and give my opinion of the FFB. Honestly the system is broken, just full of lazy people.

This made my day. So glad you finally played an AOE game Mack. Was watching your Grounded stream an was getting the impression you wouldn't be reviewing this. Not gonna lie i was getting really annoyed whenever someone asked if you would be doing it an youd fob it off with a nah iv got loads on, not played one before bla bla bla. lol. So as you can imagine was abit shocked to see this pop up today. Glad you enjoyed it an id recommend playing the older versions aswel, maybe a retro review in the future. Nice review on the basics, but the real meat in the game is in multiplayer PVP. At least this was the case back in the day when we as kids played the games. Will you review that side of it?

Nice. Seems like the AI and stuff is just like the old ones. Might pick it up - liked AoE II but was getting fed up with the old graphics and stuff. Looks like some fresh air in the RTS corner.
My experience with intermediate has been the same!
AoE1 hasn't aged well but 2 & 3 are masterpieces, I've been underwhelmed by 4 tbh.

Actually, instead of recommending another version of Age of Empires, I'd recommend Rise of Nations. It's by the designer of Civilization 2, and it has you go from the Bronze Age to the Information Age. 😁

As a French, I understand the feeling. It’s satisfying to invade England as France but imo the best feeling is to ally every single of its enemies to piss them off (Scotland in EU4... so good !)

You should definitely do a retro review for Age of Empires 2. It is easily one of the best games ever made.
Frankly I'm shocked Mack never played AoE 2. Absolute master piece. Ever considered going back to AoE 2: DE from 2019 and review it?
AoE2 definitive is worth a review
The campaign was jaw dropping to see, to be honest. The amount of time they put into it was refreshing to see in an RTS. Well worth the money in my opinion
thats funny cause aoe4 has outright the weakest campaign the series alongside aoe1. aoe2 and aoe3 are leagues above it.

Skirmish (and MP) is where it's at and it seems comparable with the older ones, I hope we get more kingdoms soon and they don't make us pay too much for them.
For sure AoE2 is the best (imo), pending me playing this game. Do give it a go mate.

@@Synchr0nix No, its objectively worse because it has less. At best its a graphically polished up version of AoE2. At worst is a derpy verision of AoE2 with bad AI, less factions, less tech. It took them over a decade to create this. Demand better.

Mack you REALLY need to just play AOE 2 if you enjoyed IV. Skip 1 and 3, AOE 2 is absolutely one of the greatest games ever made.
AoM is my fav, 3 has a decent campaign I always felt that the campaigns of 1 and 2 felt like skirmishes rather then a coherent campaign

The only real bad one is Stronghold 3 because of the bugs and lack of content. Any other Stronghold is gameplay-wise really good.
Stay away from crusader extreme and rather play the original
finished playing most of them recently and the proper, worthy of your time order should be:
-stronghold
-stronghold crusader (hd prefferably to original but definietely NOT extreme unless for mp only)
-stronghold 2 if you would like better building sim part and rest of the game being worse than former titles
-maaaybe stronghold legends which is stronghold 2 but with less building sim and no normal faction leaders but instead 3 distinct (different buildings, units) factions: arthurian LEGENDS/human, snow/icy fantasy something idk, devil/mordor something idk
AoE2 is still very much alive and competitive with casters and top players are insane lol. Pretty fun to watch too

I love watching competitive AoE2 games. From the looks of it it doesn’t look like AoE4 is hurting the AoE2 community at all either, which is awesome.

@@R3in_Ch 3 is like the odd one out. It was kinda mixed on the original release and the recent definitive edition didn't fix some issues and problems the community had with it in the first place.
Also 2 while not in 3d, is a gem and one of the most popular RTS games ever. It still has a lot of players and the strategy is very deep with a steep learning curve. You can do a lot of wild stuff. Actual matches are nothing like in the videos you see because people do all kinds of crazy things you'd have to see to believe

WAY too expensive. 120 Australian dollars on Steam, something like 90 USD. Obscene and the graphics don't look so good.

I uninstalled this game after 30 minutes. It does nothing new and the things it does do were done better by earlier installments. AoE4 should've come out in 2018 instead of AoE:DE.
To me it looks like a lazy game developers attempt to cash in on the name of a great franchise. They should have called it 3.2 AOE.

The AI is meant to be this way. Theres different strategies the the computer will randomly choose from at the start of a battle

The history lessons that come with this game especially about the different types of weapons and equipment is so amazing. I love it. I’m praying they give us Age of Mythology 2
This game looks terrible in comparison to age of empires 2 definitive edition. (A remake of an almost 25 year old game)
I think people are overrating this a bit, because it's decent compared to how shit most modern RTS games are. Big budget RTS games used to be amazing, industry defining experiences. This is just ok. It misses things that even 20 year old games had as standard, like proper cavalry charges, smooth building destruction, smooth mounting and dismounting of walls/fortifications, its naval combat is a joke, and it launches with a skeletal online component, no ladder, no nothing. It's the functional, it's the bare minimum, it's a 5-6/10. Expected more from probably the last true veteran RTS studio with Microsoft's money behind them, but I think they mismanaged it a little, split too many devs to work on CoH3, I don't know. It's nowhere near as good as it should have been.
Ignore the fan boys AOE 4 is not even close to AOE 2.
I never disagree with Mack, but I'm going to dissent here and chalk it up to Mack's admitted inexperience with AoE. WHERE IS THE NEW CONTENT? The game looks, sounds, and plays pretty much like every other AoE. We waited all this time for this???
AOE 2 and 3 Mack, some great campaigns there, aoe 2 you got frederick barbarossa, saladin, atilla the hun, ghengis khan, and braveheart william wallace

How can you rave about the games of old and not played Age of Empires? Go play AoE 2 and Age of Mythology. Fantastic games.
The whole series is quite good in their own ways, the original trilogy definitive edition all work great and all have their own little quirks to learn. AoE has always been a bit loose with the pathfinding and AI. That isn't ideal but they have always made up for it in excellent game design that overcomes it. AoE3 is probably the weakest entry, it's from that dark time in gaming when everything was kinda going to shit. It is still better than most RTS.

@@engineerhealthyself Lmao I can't get past the final attack after you destroy the 4 outpost, little tip when you receive your reinforcements move towards your base and attack the first tower along with the army you have built and destroy the first tower, then retreat you your castle before you get attacked and continue to build your army. The problem is the longer you leave it the stronger the attacks get, also build another 2 castles (3 all together as you start with one) inside your base to help defend the walls, good luck soldier.
@@engineerhealthyself hahaha, noticed on Skirmishes and decent campaign missions you generally have to play defensively for a while with plenty of archers and garrisoned keeps, then slowly build up and squirrel away an offensive army in a safe corner somewhere until your ready to break out.

Aoe2de is 10x smarter and more interesting game, tho if you dont play lan or online multiplayer, better choise is aoe4 campaings even tho aoe2 had decent ones.

I was expecting this would be a game that'd take out a lot of innocent bells. It basically does everything that is wrong with AAA game development these days and its a bit sad to see you thumb it up this easily without putting it into context (which would mean playing AOE 2 and 3).
I come here for your unapologetic style of reviewing and at least when getting to the price there should've been a storm of bells going off. All the obvious signs of a quick and dirty, overpriced and lifeless product are there. Our enemy, Mack. Our corporate, soulless enemy.
You just fidn't see it while figuring out how to age up, lol. Or maybe the horrible british documentary style (fine on the telly, a complete immersion killer in a game) gave you a fuzzy feeling while you slapped some virtual frenchmen.

For me, nothing can beat Age Of Empires 2, have hours and hours playing that game. I was looking forward to this game, but for me it failed to impress me.

Mack while you're rediscovering the RTS games have you ever played Supreme Commander or it's follow up Forged Alliance? If not it's a must. It's got it's issues but when it comes to RTS it's second to none. Nothing since has come close to what you can do in that game.
talk about a broken and never fixed AI though. Always disappointed me, best played against a human opponent then yes it shines

I like AOE4. The Docu-style is great however with the narrating telling you what already happend in the past gives less weight to a victory.
Anyway good game but AOE2 DE is the best AOE-game best value for money on Steam.
Age of empires 2 with a facelift. I like it but also hate it. Loved AOE 2 but feel like it's kind of lazy with how dated everything feels. For example during larger battles the soldiers dont move around each other like they should, having to manually seperate them and move them over to attack and so on.
I'd say it's a 7/10. Not bad, not great but got the job done.
Is there any new mechanic at all in this game? I tried to find that out once the beta videos popped up, but all i hear now is how many QoL features this thing is missing even over AoE 2.
And i still recall the first trailers talking about how important height differences in terrain will be in this game. Is anything of those promises even at all in this final product?
@@bazzy5644 A "new" mechanic is that you can hide units in forests. Something that was in a game called Praetorians that came out in I believe 2003 lol.
Height doesn't play nearly the factor they tried to make it seem. The game honestly feels more like a community mod long term project.
AoE4 looks different from 2 but not better. It's way over priced. Should be about a $30 game. And you have to remember there's going to be a ton of DLC coming that will probably be at least $15 each.
This was a hard game for me.it’s not bad however compared to AOE 2 it’s a pretty washed out game I mean come on 8 factions I understand they all play differently but it’s still 60$ for less factions updated graphics, and the combat is actually not super in depth. This game to me just doesn’t warrant it’s 60$ price point go buy AOE 2 remastered for 15$-20$ you’ll have just as much if not more fun, or at least wait until the game is on sale for 39.99$, but 60$ is way to much for this game especially if your going to buy it just for solo play.
And don't forget who the dev of this game is. Relic, the Dawn of War studio, they put out loads of DLC for their games all the time. I would not be surprised if AoE 4 gets overhauled a lot as the years go by. Which might even be a good thing, looking at it's current state. Still the point stands wait and see with this game, it's not worth it's price at all currently.

You missed out. It was a wonder watching these cheeky little... twits in AOE1 & 2 wander around and do stuff like deforestation, get attacked by wild animals, or sneak off and try to stand around doing nothing until you notice and killed them like a crewel and vindictive god. Use to run this in the background at night as a sort of fish tank. Good stuff.

AOE 2 still has thousands on steam all the time. I haven't come across any issues on the definitive edition.
My main problem with this is that doesn't look much better than AoE3 but runs like absolute shite on my PC (unlike AoE3).
- Lacks genre basic UI.
- I would say, go for it and check campaigns for AoE2 and go back.

A shame the AI is utter garbage in this game. Relic don't have the ability/skills to make a good AI like the AOE 2 DE devs.
i grew up on dune 2, also a bit of age of empires 2, warcraft 1 2 and 3, c&c... i really hope this years dune movie inspires a new proper dune real time strategy game! maybe more houses etc.!
thats when the rts genre died for me. Almost everything that came after C&C Generals is terrible.

AoE 2 DE has much more sophisticated AI. Infinitely more customizable Skirmish mode and like 250h worth of campaings, which are really quite charming even though they don't have nearly as much production value as 4.

Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition is the superior game here. Especially the 500 pop count.
AOE and red alert is what got me into RTS. Great games. Surprise that you missed it but can't play them all. I recently tried out company of heroes and that series holds up quite well. Probably my favorite overall.

Very rare that I disagree with Mac. But at this price point. Really anything above 40$ I'm gonna have to say not yet.
Yes the historical cinematics are solid, and fun to watch as it switches to modern views of historical sites.
But the AI is utter jank, the attack move doesn't prioritize military units from a wheat farm.
And the unit response/animations. Every time you click on attack move they stop what their doing for half a second for some odd reason.
Mac was right to mention pathing, which again needs more time in the oven. The formation selection is a great addition, but it's like herding cats.
After a few patches hopefully they address some of these quirks.
