It's sad to think that a game from nearly twenty years ago has better lightsaber combat than modern star wars games. Have devs working on star wars games ever played jedi academy? They should have taken notes from these games instead of dark souls and the witcher. Also, for anybody reading this including mack, check out a mod for jedi academy called movie battles 2. It's an online class based mod with the most realistic lightsaber combat you will ever see. Tons of classes with various weapons, lots of maps that the players vote on and it's one of those experiences where funny shit happens all the time. It's really hard to master but my god is it a good experience. The community on certain servers is a bit toxic (tR servers) but if you find a decent server it is great fun. Not that many people play it nowadays but there's always enough usually for two or three full servers and i highly recommend checking it out.
PC gaming at its finest. The difficulty is reminiscent of games from the 80s and 90s (when I played some of the best games ever). Thanks for this, Mac.
@@DNH17 So are a lot of others from that era. Bard's Tale, Starflight, Zork etc. I wish they would bring those types of games back. Those companies cared about their games and reputations.
Always said this was one of the best games I ever played - there was something about the combat that felt so rewarding -- no lock-ons, fluid motion Even playing multiplayer was awesome
You are in control of your character. You point at what you want to hit (with a mouse not a controller) and if your weapon connects with the enemy you get a hit. In most modern games all you are doing by pushing buttons is triggering a fancy animation with your enemy. The first time the animation looks cool, the 1000th time after a few hours of gaming it is just a snooze. Watching this gameplay reminds me again of Mount and Blade. One of the last oldschool PC games that still survive (maybe...cause Bannerlord) :(
Multiplayer isn't dead. There's a mod called Movie Battles 2 which allows you to play multiplayer and there's a huge variety of characters to play as. There's also another mod called Movie Duels 2 and you get to play through all six original movies. It feels like its own game, highly recommend that one as well.
@@utrak they say fallen order is much better then what they showed at E3 and its closer to metroid and dark souls then just another nathan drake adventure clone heres hoping anyway
Mack, you triggered a nostalgia overload for me with this game. I remember being in 4th and 5th grade coming home from school and going to my grandmas house every day looking forward to playing this game. Time really does fly...
A couple other things about Jedi Outcast I would want to know if I was considering it after this review: - You keep your full arsenal even after getting your saber/force powers, and bullets/rockets/explosives are physics objects that you can manipulate with Force Push/Pull. Combine that with Force Speed and you can play as a superpowered commando if you want. - There are some massive semi-open world levels in the game too; it's not just linear hallways. - Force Grip at max level lets you move enemies around freely. You can whip them around and fling them away or off high places too. It's not just a slow, passive kill.
I loved when you said "WHEN games were really really great", cause that is exactly how I feel about todays games in general. Especially with this game specifically I have SUCH fond memories of it, this vid took me way back to the past, much apreciated :)
This is my favorite game of all time , I played it when it came out, and sporadically ever since . Today’s Star Wars games always fail to nail lightsaber combat, but this is the perfect example of that made right
Love the retro reviews. Please make more. Maybe of some of the all time best RTS games from the old school days (Age of Empires 1 and 2, Age of Mythology + Titans Stronghold 1, Cruaser and 2, Warcraft ect).
I remember playing this while not having access to the internet yet...man, it was brutal, lol. Some of the puzzles were way too difficult for me, but i did manage to finish the game!
but it will be close. i.ve just completed jk on oculus too with the vr mod. fallen is the closest thing we will ever get. i hope heads will fly and dont fuck it up with a t rating
Not just one of the best Star Wars games ever but one of the best games ever. If I remember correctly, not only do you not get a lightsaber for a while but you also don't see any Stormtroopers for a while either. I remember walking down a dark corridor, when I heard the familiar click and voice of two troopers talking. A genuinely exciting and heart racing moment.
Mi Ke honestly picking between 1 and 2 is one of the hardest decisions but if I had to pick it would be one because I very slightly prefer the story, but overall 2 is just a better game in scope.
This brought back so many memories. I remember playing this game so much growing up. I used to have favourite levels I would go back to and play (like the level where you are start by fighting a whole load of storm troopers). It balanced being difficult with making you feel so powerful in a way I haven’t experienced in a game since. It’s probably been 15 years since I played this but I still remembered all the levels in the video. It’s nice to see this properly appreciated- I may need to buy it!
Think I’ve finished this game about 12 or more times and double that for Jedi Academy. It has the best lightsaber combat in all the games. Every now and then I just turn that on and play some saved moments in the Jedi Temple vs 4 Reborn robots and hack my way through.
Fun facts for all Star Wars Expanded Universe fans out here: The Valley of the Jedi you visit in this game is the place on Ruusan where the mind bomb exploded in Darth Bane: Path of Destruction and the Jedi vs. Sith comic. Also, Galak Fyyar's and Desann's Imperial Remnant faction is the Empire Reborn, whose "emperor" is Lord Hethrir. They also appeared in the novel The Crystal Star.
I loved this game back in the day. Easily the Jedi style game we got out of all the Star Wars games. My only complaint was the melee combat felt too floaty, the way it was designed with the movement keys being tied to combat led to what was known as the "ice skating" effect, where basically visually the combat felt like people were just ice skating around instead of well, looking like a real jedi fight (it's still good, but just could have been better imo). I wish the combat would have been more like Severance, which is one of the few melee action games of that era that solved the whole "ice skating" issue that plagued many great action games with how its controls worked.
Fallout Tactics is good and i wished the original two Fallout games had exactly that combat system/s! But people are too stupid to read. The title already says it, TACTICS and everyone is crying about how not RPG like that game is. Man, its about combat. Enter Level, shoot everything down, loot and go home. If i go to the pizzeria, i don't expect to eat a McFool's crappy hamburger!
This is also my all-time favorite game. I was already playing it back in 2003 and I still play it at least 2 times a year! For a game this old, the graphics are still very acceptable. In 2003 - 2004, I played the multiplayer version of this game for at least 7 - 8 hours a day !
my favourite "cheat" was deadly lightsaber, or how was it called. It made a lightsaber kill anything by just touching it (this also meant much mooore dismemberment) which made lightsaber duels even more juicy, especially in MP duels =)
The combat in this looks more fun than the new Star Wars game coming out. The problem with new AAA games is the devs/publishers want it to look good all the time, and that usually results in the devs limiting what the player can do to reduce the number of situations they have to account for when making all their animations flow smoothly and whatnot. It would be almost impossible to have the kind of free-flowing combat like this game without conceding that it's going to look a bit strange at times. So now we get massively compromised combat mechanics that look "cinematic"...
The online multiplayer of this deserves a special mention , such fun and the duels were amazing. If anyone remembers a player called Count Dibley , it was me !
Sadly it's pretty dead now but it was amazing, uploading skins without having to buy them :) I loved the Star destroyer map. 1 v 1 duels were also great fun.
Great critique on modern gaming. Here is my own experience: I am tied to PUBG with my friends. I typically play every major "AAA" shooter that comes down the pike, at least the single player campaigns. I had a craving for old-school fun, so I reinstalled the 2016 Doom and started dabbling in the campaign on hard. Like you, I 'sperged out initially. This thing was tough, at least for me! I had been softened up by total fucking garbage over the years. But in the end, I had a BLAST. Guess what? My PUBG performance improved. No longer was I pissed about getting run up on or losing midrange engagements. I was the guy leading the squad because I was confident I could snap to a target the fastest out of all my friends. Folks, play the older stuff again. You will enjoy it, even if the learning curve is steep!
First, I was like: _there's a new one!?_ Then I saw the (Retro Review). Then you said _let's read the words from 17 years ago_. Actual, real life LOL. You got me. :D
I absolutely love this game, not only for the single player but the multiplayer lightsaber duels were a blast. I was never the best with the lightsaber but was great at using force powers, I loved the tie fighter hanger bay map as force choking my friends and dropping them out of one of the openings was always great fun, and really used to get people raging.
Just bought my copy for 1.33 Euro.. gonna game this tonight!! =D thank you so very much for the awesome review (as always). Remember playing this when i was younger and i loved it. Just forgotten about it.. so thnx again!
Played this back in the day and remember being shocked how good the combat was. The lightsaber duals were absolutely epic. How we haven’t gotten a good solo Star Wars game in forever is beyond me. They could literally copy the mechanics from Outcast in a modern engine and people would go crazy for it. This is THE game in the entire franchise that made me feel like a Jedi samurai capable of insane gymnastic duels mastering an art.
*warning* Before you play, the initial resolution and other graphical changes made are extremely low quality. It's about 640x480/ 800x600, meaning you get that horrible compressed screen if you alt tab or try to escape to desktop with the game running. I'd recommend using the "Jedi knight expanded menu mod" as it has a much easier to navigate main menu, as well as other neat options like being able to choose a custom resolution. (naturally 1920x1080 would be preferable for most monitors). That's mainly the reason you'd want to use it, but it also unlocks other settings in the config menu that weren't available to change in the base game (besides editing the config file but that's fiddly and takes too much time). It also comes with an expanded cheat menu if you happen to use those so you rely less on the debug dev menu. It also dials up the decapitation on your lightsaber so it's a neat little package and really does bring the game into the modern era. Also, if it doesn't let you play because you don't have the CD, you can easily download a CD-fix patch off the internet.
Couldn't agree more Mack. I also recently replayed this after over a decade since my last playthrough. Still as brilliant as I remembered. My favourite of the series. Oozes pure Star Wars.
Long time fan of this series of games (Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight II, etc.). Thanks for all your reviews Mack. Two of my current favorites are Arma 3 and Prey. I wouldn't have bought them without watching your reviews. I'd have bought some other trash that I hated.
Thanks for reminding me of this game as it was one of my favorites way back when. On GOG it is $3.49 (so basically free) - even if I don't play it I will always be able to because as you said current games just are not that good anymore. Thanks for the memory!
Gog is gonna help gaming get better together with epic competition... steam destroyed everything together withcppl addiction to buy anything and become beta testers forever ... but nobody i see that explains that. Not even mack!!
This game describes my complete childhood. I played the shit out of it for 7 years since i was 13 (on MP). Back in the time we had countless servers, clans, server raids, an abundance of mods and maps..modding community was great. I consider it's lightsaber combat mechanics the top of all time and still unrivaled by many modern AAA titles.
The Dark Forces games from LucasArts are the best Star Wars games I ever played. Dark Forces I, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy... I played these games forever and absolutely loved every bit of it. After finishing JK2 and JK3 I spent hours with the console commands creating these epic custom battles against npcs
Mack ! Bought and finished this under your recommendation. Absolute top notch start to finish. I forgot about the outdated graphics after 5 mins. Proper puzzles. No glowing 'click this bit next' bullshit. Gun play superb. Lightsaber acrobatics surprisingly satisfying considering this was quake engine stuff. Best thing I've played in years. More retro reviews please.
Given the gameplay shown for fallen order, it has the potential to not be crap, although it likely won't live up to jedi academy and jedi outcast. The problem is it's EA and you can't trust them worth a damn
Sdsdfdu it’s going to be on rails, scripted, guided. I’d be willing to bet on that. Animations look smooth and fluid, but that novelty wears off in about 5 seconds.
Good one, Mack. I remember being a fan of Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces back in the day and I was so looking forward to Jedi Outcast coming out in 2002, because of Raven Software, who made my favorite games Heretic 1&2 and Hexen 1&2. Those were the days... Oh well, back to the unfulfilling present.
I remember playing this when it came out. After 2 hours I thought, this game it shite. Then at 2hrs' 1 min, I got a lightsabre, and the game went from a 4/10 to a 10/10. This has nothing to do with nostalgia, this game is just bloody good. It's in my top 10 of all time games from the last 25 years.
That's how I felt for a start. It makes me think of those movies that make you wait until halfway through, before doing the big monster reveal. I pointed out elsewhere that another fantastic moment was when you hear a stormtrooper for the first time, as you walk down a dark corridor. Genuine thrills. Same goes for hearing a probe droid the first time - I ran to hide....err....I mean for cover. :-)
This is the first starwars game I played and I loved every second of it I was like 18 when I played it and I still remember it as the best starwars game ever made Even now in 2022 I bought it on steam and it's still amazing as I remember it when I was a teenager The story was so great I enjoyed every second of it even my younger sister played it back then and she adore this game till this day Very great memories with this one I wish we get this amazing high quality games now, we get some but not as great as these old releases unfortunately A genuine gem of a game
Jedi Academy was my favorite, with the addition of mods like Moviebattles and Evolution of Combat, the manual directional blocking that these mods add is very nice.
I have played this game online for long time. We even had a guild and was just duelling all day against other players. 3 lighstaber style using combos. What an amazing time were for gaming.
All force powers can be key-rebinded around your four basic movement keys. Make use of this! Don't use the UI to select force powers. Put them on dedicated keys, to instantly Force Lightning and Choke the fools who stand before you! Show them, who's boss!
Oh so many memories. My first online matches with lightsaber dueling, just wonderful. The only small issue I had was with the force speed. It's ridiculously OP. :D You can melt any boss by just force speeding (which slows down the game) and seeing them go in slow motion and delicately chopping off the bad guy's head. :D But it's a really great game nonetheless.
It's the little things. Like when you see an enemy Sith in the distance he just stands there staring at you. Won't attack until you draw you lightsabre and charge.
I saw people complaining about the main character in Jedi: Fallen Knight jumping and rolling during fights but this had it too. I'd give that game a chance esp because the footage was in alpha stages. Hope they don't release it before finishing it. Fingers crossed
It is indeed one of the best action games ever made. The biggest reason it is so good, unlike games nowadays, besides the story and combat beeing so damn satisfying, is that it really doesnt hold your hand, so you´ll have to explore and figure out where to go. And the sense of becoming more powerful along the way is masterfully crafted.
I miss the golden age of gaming. 1997 to 2009. So fucking many amazing games came out in this period of time. 2010 was the final point of the golden era for halo. The best memories I'll have were from those years. Every year gaming was getting bigger and better not just a rinse and repeat method we get nowadays.
More like this! Loving the retro reviews Mac. I loved Dark Forces 1 & 2, don't know how I managed to completely miss Jedi Outcast. I remember in DF 2 you had to put in a lot of work before you got hold of a light sabre - made it seem really special. It was also cool how the virtue of your actions would lead you down the different sides of the force, each with their own awesome force powers. Did anyone ever play a game called boiling point? Came out in 2005 I think. I really enjoyed it and thought it was lightyears ahead of it's time, but I've never met anyone else who actually played it.
It funny you mentioned the hard puzzles without the hand holding. I got to thinking when I was like 13 and finished “Laura bow and the dagger of Amon Ra” for the first time and you are supposed to tell who murdered each person in the game. And I didn’t even know the names of the victims. I don’t even think I’d get it right to this day. Such a great game.
I always preferred Jedi Knight over this myself, but still a fantastic game. The multiplayer was fantastic. I must have spent hundreds of hours online with this one. I hate the Nar Shadaa level though. It's full of one hit kill snipers.
Legit my only gripe about this game is the gunplay. I'm pretty much forced to quicksave like a madman throughout the first few levels because you have no idea how smoothly or chaotic the gunfights will be. You'll either get lucky and get through it no sweat, or you'll struggle against a single enemy while they run around like headless chickens peppering you with lasers the whole time. Once you get your lightsaber and force powers tho... My god! Such a great experience!
I just downloaded it for my smartphone... Works absolutely great... Now I have not only all doom games up. To D3 but also rtcw, morrowind and quake and jk2.... Amazing what smartphones can do...

@@DNH17 So are a lot of others from that era. Bard's Tale, Starflight, Zork etc. I wish they would bring those types of games back. Those companies cared about their games and reputations.
Always said this was one of the best games I ever played - there was something about the combat that felt so rewarding -- no lock-ons, fluid motion
Even playing multiplayer was awesome
Rather have this remastered then Jedi Fallen Order
you'd rather have a glorious masterpiece than a steaming pile of shite? Imagine that. *ding*
@@utrak they say fallen order is much better then what they showed at E3 and its closer to metroid and dark souls then just another nathan drake adventure clone
heres hoping anyway
Definately agree. still have it, and boy I still love the force-choke Saber-throw combo
Fallen order doesn't even have limbs taking off. Like this game.
@@mrt4755 I hope so, because you're right E3 footage was total hot garbage.
Oh yeah, disemboweling opponents in this game was satisfying. Thanks for the reminder of Star Wars games' better days.
Mack, you triggered a nostalgia overload for me with this game. I remember being in 4th and 5th grade coming home from school and going to my grandmas house every day looking forward to playing this game. Time really does fly...
Such a great game. I actually finished this as a kid on Jedi Master back in the day. I’m struggling as an adult on the normal difficulty 😭
Keep trying u will become a kid again.. it s abt the brain.
This brain takes slightly longer nowadays unfortunately. And less patience!
I have great memories with this game. One of the first I played intensely. Especially the multiplayer.
I know what u mean... big memories with operation flash point for me in 2001. No multiplayer for me but .. what a blast
Hey Mac, there is still multiplayer on Jedi Knight Jedi Academy
It's great Movie Battles 2 mod is awesome
do you play it? I used to play jka a lot (1000s of hours)
The levels on this game have a great atmosphere and they make you think.
This was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I didn’t speak any english back then, so it was even harder, but I really loved it.
The more the years roll on, the more the greatness of this game is realised.
A couple other things about Jedi Outcast I would want to know if I was considering it after this review:
- You keep your full arsenal even after getting your saber/force powers, and bullets/rockets/explosives are physics objects that you can manipulate with Force Push/Pull.
Do Jedi Academy next, there's even still an active multiplayer with the Movie Battles mod!
I like how they make you wait for the lightsaber
Nice video in order to explain why "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" will be not a true "jedi" game.
but it will be close. i.ve just completed jk on oculus too with the vr mod. fallen is the closest thing we will ever get. i hope heads will fly and dont fuck it up with a t rating
Except it was. Fallen Order is the more accurate representation of a Jedi on the run during order 66.
Jedi Fallen Order is actually pretty fun. But it still doesn't hold a candle to Jedi Outcast.
The PvP on this game was so amazing.
We used to sit in the computer lab at school & play the absolute HELL out of this game.
Good times.
I know you haven’t played the original fallouts, but I would love your thoughts on fallout 1 and 2 because they are my two favorite RPGS of all time.
I loved this game soooo much back in the day. The original Dark Forces was one of the first FPS’ I played on PC.
Dark Forces was the main reason I bought a PC and ditched my Amiga. Remember the 8Mb expansion card requirement to play it?
Think I’ve finished this game about 12 or more times and double that for Jedi Academy. It has the best lightsaber combat in all the games. Every now and then I just turn that on and play some saved moments in the Jedi Temple vs 4 Reborn robots and hack my way through.
Am I the only one who would love to see Mack do a top ten games of all time?
I loved this game back in 2002... the light sabre duels in Fallen Order reminded me of it a lot 😊
I wish we could have something like g_sabercombatrealistic 1
in Fallen Order as well! :D
If this game got a reboot in 2019 journalists will cry because of the difficulty lool.
2007 was a great year for gaming. Crysis, TF2, Quake Wars, Portal, and even Modern Warfare (yeah the shitiest title that year)
Any reboot of this game is bound to suck tbh. You just don't get this level of attention to detail anymore.
Kas Kas988 it just got ported to the Switch and PlayStation 4.
And because he saves a woman.
Fallout 1 and 2 next? Fallout Tactics if you want i guess
Probably my top 3 game of all time.
That moment when you encounter first Reborn in Bespin...
Man, I played hours and hours of FFA in MP.
Jedi Academy next?
definitely my personal favourite among all the star wars games
This is also my all-time favorite game. I was already playing it back in 2003 and I still play it at least 2 times a year! For a game this old, the graphics are still very acceptable. In 2003 - 2004, I played the multiplayer version of this game for at least 7 - 8 hours a day !
Its nice to see thr lightsaber actually be deadly and not just like a stick like it is now in games
my favourite "cheat" was deadly lightsaber, or how was it called. It made a lightsaber kill anything by just touching it (this also meant much mooore dismemberment) which made lightsaber duels even more juicy, especially in MP duels =)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved this game.
Great job, Mack!
Here is my own experience:
I am tied to PUBG with my friends.
First, I was like: _there's a new one!?_
Then I saw the (Retro Review). Then you said _let's read the words from 17 years ago_. Actual, real life LOL.
You got me. :D
To delete save games on PS4 go into systems>storage>saved data then delete away . PS Mack I lasted more than 2 seconds with the controller.
I absolutely love this game, not only for the single player but the multiplayer lightsaber duels were a blast. I was never the best with the lightsaber but was great at using force powers, I loved the tie fighter hanger bay map as force choking my friends and dropping them out of one of the openings was always great fun, and really used to get people raging.
looking at this warms my heart i have the best memories with this game to anyone who didnt play it and loves star wars YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS
Just bought my copy for 1.33 Euro.. gonna game this tonight!! =D thank you so very much for the awesome review (as always). Remember playing this when i was younger and i loved it. Just forgotten about it.. so thnx again!
The bespin city streets with the laser rifle snipers still gives me nightmares.
*warning*
Before you play, the initial resolution and other graphical changes made are extremely low quality.
I still have the physical copy, great game that aged like good wine.
So glad you started playing old games. You are practicaly playing my youth years playlist.
Couldn't agree more Mack. I also recently replayed this after over a decade since my last playthrough. Still as brilliant as I remembered. My favourite of the series. Oozes pure Star Wars.
The early 2000s were a great time to be a young teenager with nothing but time to kill on the weekends. LAN parties with truly good games.
I didn't play this one but I loved Jedi Knight, it was one of the best games I'd ever played when it came out, and I suspect I'd still love it now.
What a weird coincidence, I'm about halfway through Jedi Knight 1 on my way to this game and you upload this of all things, great video!
This is the first starwars game I played and I loved every second of it
I was like 18 when I played it and I still remember it as the best starwars game ever made
Even now in 2022 I bought it on steam and it's still amazing as I remember it when I was a teenager
The story was so great I enjoyed every second of it even my younger sister played it back then and she adore this game till this day
Very great memories with this one
I wish we get this amazing high quality games now, we get some but not as great as these old releases unfortunately
A genuine gem of a game
Jedi Academy was my favorite, with the addition of mods like Moviebattles and Evolution of Combat, the manual directional blocking that these mods add is very nice.
I have played this game online for long time. We even had a guild and was just duelling all day against other players. 3 lighstaber style using combos. What an amazing time were for gaming.
Just found this game on sale, Knew nothing about it. Very pleasantly surprised
I remember when I was a kid and was playing this for the first time... The part where Kyle and Luke have to fight that group of reborns. Epic.
My childhood game, left me with such a great feeling gaming. It's a dream
All force powers can be key-rebinded around your four basic movement keys. Make use of this!
Don't use the UI to select force powers. Put them on dedicated keys, to instantly Force Lightning and Choke the fools who stand before you! Show them, who's boss!
Imagine this game, but with 2019 graphics....... I want it so badly!
And I guess you should move onto Jedi Academy now :D
I played this game for the first time about 4 years ago. First time really playing a game with a keyboard and mouse. Just amazing!
JEDI ACADEMY + KNIGHTS OF THE FORCE MOD
Oh so many memories. My first online matches with lightsaber dueling, just wonderful.
The only small issue I had was with the force speed. It's ridiculously OP. :D
You can melt any boss by just force speeding (which slows down the game) and seeing them go in slow motion and delicately chopping off the bad guy's head. :D
But it's a really great game nonetheless.
FYI on sale for $2.50 @ fanatical
Cam you do a retro review of Gladius, this made me think of it as it's a lucasarts game.
And holy shit it's so good but doesn't get enough attention
More like this! Loving the retro reviews Mac.
I loved Dark Forces 1 & 2, don't know how I managed to completely miss Jedi Outcast. I remember in DF 2 you had to put in a lot of work before you got hold of a light sabre - made it seem really special. It was also cool how the virtue of your actions would lead you down the different sides of the force, each with their own awesome force powers.
Did anyone ever play a game called boiling point? Came out in 2005 I think. I really enjoyed it and thought it was lightyears ahead of it's time, but I've never met anyone else who actually played it.
you will appreciate the game even more when you discover its multiplayer secrets ;)
Star Wars games in general were sooooo good back then...This, republic commando, og battlefront...hell even the age of empires reskin was good
It funny you mentioned the hard puzzles without the hand holding.
It's full of one hit kill snipers.
oh I remember those bullshit snipers.
