He is. But a guitar player can't be a broad legend nowadays, there just isn't the same sized main stream that there was in the days of Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen. Nowadays, most legends are confined to their genre/fan base.
I laugh at those who deny his skills when he is truly an amazing guitar player. You may not like him or his music, but saying he's "an average guitar player" is utter ignorance.
you know hes like 35 and has been playing guitar 20 years right? At least you didn't outright hate on him, but hes one of the best around these days for sure. Other generations were loaded with amazing players, we only got a few. and there is only one John Mayer
This is bad ass white guy he got so much talent and he play the hell out of guitar he is mean and I know music coming from south and living over 45 yrs in Bay Area he got me rocking my wheelchair I’m quite sure my late husband had his music he was a left handed bass player this is favor song and he got his own style he even mix a little reggae in❤❤❤😊
@MrChillywilly1234 it's never too late to discover talent! I'm glad that there is people that dig deeper than the Your Body Is a Wonderland face, he is much more than that!
Give the huge Keith Carlock (drummer) some credit people. this performance is 25% Keith Carlock right here. The hell he's soo good. and John Mayer: yeah he needs no description. He's fucking John Mayer. favourite musician ever.
One of the best of our time. I think its great that John Mayer brings out all these old classics at his concerts. He, it seems, has more fun playing all these old, great, and timeless tunes. He is educating a new generation on old school GREAT music. God Bless him.
This is by far my favorite rendition of this song, it's the "I don't give a fuck" attitude that makes it an extraordinary performance, even when not "perfect" on the technical side of music.
Luis Mejia sure. But not in that sense. He‘s an excellent player. He also is very concerned about how he is perceived and his expressions are very acted and premeditated. Jimi Hendrix, BB King... those guys actually didn‘t give a fuck.
¨ I have never before heard any guitarist play something new every single song or concert clip, but he does ******, and the riffs he is playing are REALLY REALLY EPIC. ¨ **
I don't understand how people don't respect this guy's talent! Who cares what he's like in his private life, he's a great guitarist/songwriter, and he surrounded himself with a great rhythm section ,(John Mayer Trio,(also Don Henley's rhthym section) although I don't see them in this video. I like his interpretation. He uplifted a fairly sullen song, and the solo was awesome, from improvisation to phrasing!
This song just sounds like a summer Sunday night when it’s just been too hot and it’s finally getting somewhat comfortable. But you’re still a little sweaty from the heat…. And you’re just getting relaxed with your friends.
I have to be honest. I have never before heard a guitarist where you may say there is no typical riffs or stereotypes with. I have never before heard any guitarist play something new every single song or concert clip he has played on, and the riffs he is playing are REALLY REALLY EPIC. Therefore, in my opinion, this has to be the worlds best blues- guitarist. Yes. I am serious.
De los mejores guitarristas del mundo sin duda, no pasa por un tema de velocidad o que tan difícil pueda tocar, sus licks , su manera de tocar la guitarra, es sensacional, muuuuy talentoso
Classical players just cant comprehend his playing. It takes a talented to tell a story and convey that feeling and emotion through an improvised performance like mayer does. Classical players are trained to do as a sheet of paper has told them to do.
Wow. My level of respect for mr mayer has rose enormously after seeing THIS solo. Amazing how tight in the beginning and how crazy after that. Maybe a little Santana I think? Nice bridge to the i know too.
this guys voice! randomly just clicked on him without realising how good he is! why has he never came to the UK properly, i just dont get it. we are deprived!
so are we just gonna act like 2:29 isn't one of the most amazing sounds u ever heard come out of a guitar or no? thats playing almost made me shit bricks!!! wtf! do u even call that!? i tried to recreate the sound with my mouth wen describing it to a friend and i just sounded like an idiot! so amazing mayer!!
@angelmason77 But maybe you don't like the fact that he is really exploring ALL music genres, he has gone from pop, to blues, now he is doing folk, en as to this video, ALSO reggae! I think John Mayer is an exceptional musician, and as a fellow musician, I salute him. He is evolving constantly. He only did two semesters on berklee btw, so thats not really Fellow Berklee student.
There may be many people who play at or above his technical level.. John Mayer's 'feel' - a thing which cannot be taught - that's what's so special about him, and puts him a notch above many other players. I'd even rank him above Clapton in that arena, and I love Clapton's playing, I just feel it more from J.M. So, yea, you may be right, technically, but technical doesn't reach people, unless the people are Jazz..
When will this guy be acknowledged as a true guitar legend? My god.
He is. But a guitar player can't be a broad legend nowadays, there just isn't the same sized main stream that there was in the days of Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen. Nowadays, most legends are confined to their genre/fan base.
Unfortunately when he dies :(
IYKYK - He is to all that matter.
I laugh at those who deny his skills when he is truly an amazing guitar player. You may not like him or his music, but saying he's "an average guitar player" is utter ignorance.
Best guitar player to ever live in my opinion. A mixture of all the greats that came before him.

you know hes like 35 and has been playing guitar 20 years right?
At least you didn't outright hate on him, but hes one of the best around these days for sure. Other generations were loaded with amazing players, we only got a few. and there is only one John Mayer
One of my all time favourite John Mayer licks is at 2:37 It just fits into the song perfectly.
***** me too man, think it's my favourite.
+sparkyman91 This is also one of my all time favorite licks ever. Anyone have a guitar tab for it?
d33f15h after 2:37 or just before at 2:35?
David Natoli both lol
This is bad ass white guy he got so much talent and he play the hell out of guitar he is mean and I know music coming from south and living over 45 yrs in Bay Area he got me rocking my wheelchair I’m quite sure my late husband had his music he was a left handed bass player this is favor song and he got his own style he even mix a little reggae in❤❤❤😊
From 2023, John is a timeless artist. His music is as good today as it ever was. Love it and him.
Still listening in 2021! Im in tears how good this performance is 😭
@MrChillywilly1234 it's never too late to discover talent! I'm glad that there is people that dig deeper than the Your Body Is a Wonderland face, he is much more than that!
Fantastic! I see this is during a Mayer hippie phase which i never knew existed haha
"Who cares what he's like in his private life, he's a great guitarist/songwriter, and he surrounded himself with a great rhythm section" - Word!
Im not sure that I've ever heard a better cover. PERIOD.
Give the huge Keith Carlock (drummer) some credit people. this performance is 25% Keith Carlock right here. The hell he's soo good. and John Mayer: yeah he needs no description. He's fucking John Mayer. favourite musician ever.

This is by far my favorite rendition of this song, it's the "I don't give a fuck" attitude that makes it an extraordinary performance, even when not "perfect" on the technical side of music.
Yes exactly! He's having so much fun 😍
Well Mayer does give a lot of fucks actually
Luis Mejia sure. But not in that sense. He‘s an excellent player. He also is very concerned about how he is perceived and his expressions are very acted and premeditated. Jimi Hendrix, BB King... those guys actually didn‘t give a fuck.
@@elpedomasgrande1here he's truly not giving a f. He looks high af
This is pure soul and talent. Everything. Ignore the awkward vocals and stuff bc if u can feel it, it is soul.
i watched this a 100 times, but still everytime i do it i shiver!!!
LOVE IT! Great reggae groove in this unique interpretation of a classic.
People at the show might have been completly blown off by that prestation! This is sending me somewhere out of hearth so good!
This guy is amazing! whoever says different either is deaf, or never played music!
welcome back again, Mr Mayer.
Mayer is just Mayer in all his own kind of awesomeness. Why need to compare? No need!
¨ I have never before heard any guitarist play something new every single song or concert clip, but he does ******, and the riffs he is playing are REALLY REALLY EPIC. ¨ **
what a complete badass so underrated he is a freaking beast
Love everything about this. The deep tones of John's voice, his moves, his intensity, of course his mad guitar skills And 2:01 to 2:04!!! ❤️😍
me 2nd ❤
3:00 - 3:34 will be the death of me trying to figure out what he's playing
Why does it matter about who's more famous? The quality of the music when compared speaks volumes.
Guitar wise John Mayer is on another level..
I don't understand how people don't respect this guy's talent! Muted picking. He’s very good at it
Palm muting- it gives it a percussive sound
Those horns are fire!!
ahhhh!! i freaking love this!
Not sure you can get a better quality of this particular version, John Mayer streamed this concert and this was the quality that it was streamed in.
beautiful guitar!
