  • Orion and the Dark is Dreamworks latest film, and in what is clearly my latest unpopular opinion, I didn't like it. Let's dive into why. Enjoy.

It feels like they just gave up writing about the story because they couldn't find a continuation and used the exit hatch of rendering it all fake with the father daughter thing and it really made it more confusing and less enjoyable for me

@quinzerrak4975 Exactly my point. I was expecting Adult Orion to go back to his house with Hypatia and put her to sleep and then he would also go to bed, staring at the ceiling, and then we would see the rest of the story, maybe because he didn't want to tell Hypatia what happened next because he thought she wouldn't understand the ending quite well and something. NOT SOME LAME TIME TRAVEL!

I thought it would be a wholesome story.
Then when it turned out to be a story told by adult orion, I thought he was telling his child experiences with the night entities.
Then When hypatia added ideas, I thought dark was actually talking to her when she was too scared to sleep, and orion just forgot parts that were a long time ago.
But when hypatia came in, I got kinda disappointed.
Then I had a small stroke trying to figure out the end of the story lol.

I thought it was a really fun movie, but once we found out the story was being made up as we went and could be edited however they wanted, it took away all stakes, and made it feel fake, totally took me out of the story. I still think it was a fun ride till that point though. Still a decent movie but I wish they hadn’t made it just a story. I was hoping darkness would come and wink at old Orion and his wife at least, but that didn’t happen either. And the time machine erased all semblance of a good plot. It’s just like, yeah, it’s fixed now cause we said so.

    • @SkorgeSlaps
      @SkorgeSlaps 7 месяцев назад +5

The idea they were expressing was that the father didn't come up with an ending to the story, because it was just a silly bedtime story to tell his daughter, which is made clear from the flashes forward to the "present" time. It was the daughter's idea to implement herself into the story and, being a good father, he let her imagination run wild and put herself into the story. Then later when it's revealed that she doesn't know how to get out, it's because the story is no longer being told from the father's perspective, it's being told from the daughter's. We can imagine the daughter's son (Tycho) asking the same prodding questions that she did as a kid when SHE tells HIM the bedtime story (shown at the end). And the same way that the father didn't quite know how to tie up all the lose ends, neither did she because it's just a bedtime story, but the beauty came from letting the child come up with their own ending that defeats their fears. It's truly beautiful and it saddens me more people don't appreciate the sentiment portrayed in the last 15-20 minutes.

It felt like two different movies, one a supernatural tale about a kid facing his fears and the other a father bounding with his daughter. And I actually liked both parts but they didn't always mesh well. Even though it was less adventurous when we cut to adult Orion and Hypatia, it was still nice and wholesome to see a parent and child bound and get along, pretty much all animated films just has them arguing so this was a welcome change and I also loved how because some generational story pacing on good lessons rather than trauma like Encanto and Strange World. And I loved the stuff with kid Orion and Dark but it loses its meaning a bit when you realize that it really was all fake. So yeah I didn't hate the movie but I can understand why some people didn't love it.

      This..........
IS WHAT I CALL A PERFECT IDEA !!!
I mean we already seen that Orion is scared of mostly everything so having an antagonist like fear is perfect because if Orion throughout the movie could find out that Fear is the one who is constantly controlling his life and is the reason why he is afraid of Dark, it's because of Fear, he is the reason why Orion can't talk to Sally, he is the reason why he can't stand up to his bullies, This is an amazing idea and I wish the movie could have something like an antagonist, Overall this is my opinion

I kinda wish they went with a "clash"
The Night Entitles wanted a job in the light, Dream even stated that she wanted to do DayDreams instead, they all should have clashed with other entities. Dream should have met her alter self, Day Dream, Sleep, should have met Nap, the fly thing (forgot his name) should have met Anxiety, Unexplained Nosies should have clashed into whatever Entity that would make day time sounds.
This clash would further explain _why_ dark is important for them, they cannot physically exist with Light, because Light has his own Entities with him. There needs to be a balance.
I was a little surprised to see that Light had none of his own entities.

I really wanted to enjoy this movie and everything was fine until the scenes of Adult Orion and his daughter and the time traveling really dragged this movie down. In my personal opinion, the ending was so obnoxious, feels so random, it’s was in the wrong movie and it made me to lost most respect in this movie. I hate that the entire time, this was all just a fanfic movie made by a dumb kid who has no idea what he’s doing.
The scenes of Adult Orion telling a story to his daughter feels more like a sloppy version of the bedtime scenes from The Princess Bride. Like instead of making a setup of him telling the story to his kid before the movie starts, they instead just paused the movie by putting random things that literally came out of nowhere and there was no setup of how this story works (it feels like they’re trying to rip off the random scene of Cartman telling a Christmas horror story from South Park).
This movie would be so much better off if Dark was the main focus and protagonist instead of Orion (since I honestly think he is one of Dreamworks annoying main characters next to Oh and probably better off as a sidekick).
In my personal opinion, Orion and the Dark is now one of those movies where I watch it once but never come back due to how either awful or disappointing it is.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I don't think your opinion is unpopular though (almost quite the opposite). The movie gets mixed reception, so either side of opinion isn't going to be a hot take. I can see why many people aren't big fans of Orion and The Dark, but from what I've observed, many people, sometimes entirely, missed the point of what the movie is actually about and the real message the movie is trying to convey.
This is actually about a family contributing to a fictional story about how Orion overcomes his fear. So first, the main focus (unfortunately) isn't going to be an exciting supernatural adventure as I and many people expected. Second, the inconsistent, messy, and sometimes wild aspects (especially near the end) in the movies are intentional (which again, aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea) because the story is improvised on the fly; The contributing story is definitely going to be imperfect and over the top (depending on who's telling the story).
While I can see why people find the story confusing, I find this kind of writing rather clever since it captures the sense of a family improvised story very well. Granted, it was a shame the imaginative and interesting possibilities were sacrificed to serve this turn of narration (that makes many people upset), but I don't find the (intentionally flawed) story bad at all. In any case, I appreciate all the effort and ambition to experiment on the story rather than pumping safe and generic adventure that would potentially receive much more positive reception.

Honestly i actually enjoyed the story for the most part. It became way too meta, i will admit that, but it was not until the last part witht the 3rd generation (when orion's daughter's child finished with a weird space timetravling sequence) that i was thrown off. Most of it, if not everything, felt very realistic when it came to how - not specifically a story should be written - but how a child would write a story. The best part was ofc made by orion as an adult, progressively got too on the nose with the whole 'a child wrote this part of the story'. But i had also alread it segmented into my mind that it wasn't going to he a good movie because i'd seen little to no advertising for it at all, which means dreamworks knew it was a lowball, so i could only really get neutral to positive reaction based on my expectations.

The first half I enjoyed. However…. The farther it went, the more the story began to break its own immersion for me.😅 The Orion outright saying it didn’t actually happen to his daughter was the first bit. Realizing that the entities weren’t real AT ALL, even in their own movie, just suddenly made them feel even less significant. It was even worse by the end when it suddenly became about time travel and pretty much ditched the theme of fear and the night entities altogether.😅 It was certainly realistic how kids make stories super complicated and usually aren’t that good because they get carried away with all their imagination, but it was already too realistic by then.😅 We watch these movies for a bit of escapism and the chance to focus and take a beautiful life lesson with us back to the real world, this movie kept us in the real world too much and undermined itself.😥

Plot was going surprisingly well until orion's daughter magically appears into the movie, idea of the time machine and the little time goober, was, no offense, stupid.
I also kinda felt annoyed, after finding out that it was just a story that was told to orion's daughter.

I watched the Movie. I kinda Liked the movie. Don't really Love or hate it tbh. I think The Idea was interesting if a bit weirdly done. Although I for some reason unlike a Lot of people here, I actually gained interest in the movie when They Showed that The story was being told by Orion to his Daughter. It was an interesting choice to do it this way.
I understand the Story turning out to be not Real might be bad in some peoples eyes. After all, It is sorta like the "It was all just a Dream" kinda thing. Tho, This Movie made me question why we feel that way in the first place. I mean, At the end of the day, It IS a Movie, This story is fake. We all Knew that before watching the Film. So why do we feel like this after being told that? I mean, Even if The adventure was real, It would still technically be fake. I don't know, Just something to think about. haha.

Yeah, this movie was a great concept
A child overcoming his fears thanks for the darkness of the night? Great idea
And to give it a twist that it was actually a story he told their daughter all along and maybe change it through generations could've worked if they made it simpler and left the character's existence ambiguous.
But the self insert the story does to represents filling the plot holes thanks to the family's generations, while logical and realistic, brings the entire story down by a thousand and removes all the stakes by making it a worst story and not important anymore
Sucks cause the beginning was really good and they could've done the twist in a good way
    Great concept, bad execution

    SAME!!
Like, the beginning of the movie?! Great, very much so, setting up Orion's fear of everything and that whole thing in a very effective way both sweet yet surprisingly somber, then we get Dark and the other entities who are all really fun and creative characters and the highlight of the movie, and the bonding between Orion and Dark is genuinely cute and wholesome... Then that's it! A really fun and creative buddy movie, right?! YES, if the whole movie was JUST about them, the entities and the whole you know, CONQUERING YOUR FEARS THING! I'd say we have another Dreamworks banger!
BUT THEN THE MOVIE KEEPS GOING!! As soon as the daughter thing came up not even in the middle of it, I was immediately thrown off! And then it kept going and going and the daughter is here now?! AND GRANDSON??!! I'm sorry! What happened to the cohesion? The fun buddy movie?! Now I'm officially out of it and I don't care about Orion or Dark anymore cause it seems like the movie just forgot about them, nothing makes sense anymore and things just happen, the whole Orion dissing Dark to the entities felt so off like, when did this happened?! They could've kept the whole "the movie is a story for his daughter" thing but until the very end! To ya know, show that he got over his fear or at least make it so we can tell that the story actually happened!! I hate that they kinda implied that it didn't!
MAN! I really wanted to like this movie and the worst part is... That I did! The beginning and everything with Dark, Orion and the entities was so great and everything I expected but I can't even enjoy it case it's only like a fraction of the whole thing and the things I didn't care for take the rest of the movie's runtime!

I liked the first half but then the argument before the climax thing, Orion and his daughter changing the story, Time Travel ruined it
I thought "what the hell is going on?!"
Sooo let's see Orion is a kid who's afraid of everything it's cliche but alright it works
    a school bully he fears
Has a crush on a girl whom he hardly mentions again to Dark or the other entities
We see he has a daughter 40 mins in
He messes up the entities jobs and they get pissed and annoyed of him and Dark
But it quickly gets resolved and Orion starts helping them and they start warming up to him and the movie wasn't even nearly over yet
This movie man Idk what happened but it wasn't what I expected
I lost interest after the time travel plot
Dark hating on Light cause he makes people feel safe sounded like a good conflict
And when they mention he will disappear if Light shines over him I was intrigued
Then it happens and we cut to Orion and his daughter and when she asks what happened next and he replies "I don't know" wtf I thought it was gonna be a story where everything did happen and she asks "is that a true story?" Kind of thing
The other entities I didn't care about as I thought I would
The premise was interesting and the character designs was cool
Insomnia though looks like Zipper from Rescue Rangers and a Inside Out character

This movie makes no sense whatsoever. The feeling I get after this is that they started with a supernatural kid's story (which I was loving), weren't brave enough to go for it and made the "it was all imagination" move (what a terrible move, bcs everything built up until that point loses weight/meaning) and then just said "fuck it" and you know the ending.
Simplicity is key. That was a storytelling ship wreck to watch. Never get so lost in new and "intelectual" ideas that you lose your characters. Who is the protagonist? What's the message of the movie? None of these basic questions can be answered, cause they wanted it all and ended with a waste of time. So disappointed.

Well my daughter liked it enough to want to watch it more than once, sort of. I keep my opinions to myself in front of her, but the movie annoys tf out of me, and the plot makes very little sense. It just aimlessly ambles along, and the sense of it being made up as it goes (the intention) is all too real, and unfortunately has a very negative impact on the story . Even my daughter loses interest by the end of it. It just has the ability to lose any interest that may have existed at the outset. It reminds me of the movie ‘Luck’. Another aimless one, though ‘Luck’ is still better.
As for the characters.. The kid, his grown self, his parents, his daughter, all extremely, irritatingly, boringly, wholesome characters without any sense of humour or colour to their personalities. Just robotic examples of how good people are supposed to be apparently.. So dull.
I’m a good person, but people like that cause my eyes to glaze over. Such uninteresting, spineless personalities. But that’s what good people are I guess right? 🤢🤮

i agree that having it all be a story being told to a kid was just awful. it's like they knew they couldn't make this into a sequel so they had to get rid of all the world building. and it's a shame too because i felt like if it were real, it would have helped a lot of fearful children with anxiety. here's a rewrite: orion meets dark, dark tells him to stop being a baby, he shows him the wonders of the night and how beautiful the world can be at night. orion meet insomnia and noise, at first he hates them, basically blaming them for making him so scared of everything, only for dark to point out that like him, they were just doing thier jobs. later on the film, orion accepts his flaws and tries to become braver, he helps insomnia because of his head has more anxious thoughts than anyone else, and he helps noise realizing it's fun to scare people. when the next morning arrives, he is more confident, even helping his crush with a fear she has. he grows up to become a horror comic artist. he tells this story to his daughter who doesn't believe him, dark arrives and asks if it's okay to meet his daughter, orion gives him a thumbs up and the movie ends with orion's daughter and dark going on a similar journey.

Without the fact that the whole story is just a bedtime story, the whole ent of this world just doesn't work. At the moment with time travel, I thought about it, but continued to look further. And the finale didn't disappoint me. It is very touching, and in a sense philosophical.
Personally, my rating is 7/10, but apparently people expect "Pixar" in the worst possible way:/

The movie was good from the start and middle, but shoving Hypatia into the story wasn’t a good idea and the ending really confused me.
But it is still a good movie compared to Kung fu Panda 4 and Megamind 2

I’m so done with this movie, if they really wanted to go on the bedtime story route, they should have made the scene where Hypatia is with older Orion in the very beginning of this movie ! Just like in Edward scissors hands ! And why not have a scene where Hypatia asks "but did this really happen to you dad ?" and then Orion says something like "idk what do you think ?" . This movie makes me just so… AHH CAN’T IT’S SO WASTED !!!! >:(

Your review is funny as hell. A film written by Charlie Kaufman who wrote Synecdoche, New York, Being John Malkovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Adaptation, and you expected a light hearted fun little film. You really don’t look into the actual creative side of projects, just the company that brought it to you

I’m sorry what? Dreamworks isn’t gonna be animating anymore but instead outsourcing??? Wtf kind of logic is that????? This film was a budget title, straight to streaming, the modern equivalent of straight-to-DVD. OF COURSE they will continue to animate the bigger budget movies in-house because what else are they gonna do with that? They wouldn’t waste precious resources and talent with their in house animation department on something straight to streaming dude.
