The .41 Mag will be firing 175 gr Winchester Silver Tip (duty ammo) while the .44 Mag will be firing some standard Federal 240 gr JHP.The Federal box lists the .44's velocity at 1250 FPS, the Silver Tip box has no velocity listed.

There are several different manufacturers that have made .41 magnums over the years.. S & W made the 57, 657 and the 58. Charter arms made a model 74210 which was discontinued after a few years. Someone who had the Charter Arms said that it was uncomfortable to shoot. Taurus made a 41 Magnum. Ruger makes the .41in the Blackhawk. Ruger made the .41in a RedHawk for a couple years and they are considered rare. United Sporting Arms (US Arms) who is no longer around made the Single action Seville, in 41magnum. US Arms was making their guns in Tombstone, and then moved their operation to Tucson and it was sold and a company who moved it to the NorthEast and they went out of business. The US Arms frame was more stout than the BlackHawk. It was comparable to the Super BlsackHawk. All of their Large Caliber pistols were made on the same frame. I heard US Arms, got sued by Ruger, due to the transfer bar system that they were using and they had financial difficulties. US Arms, made their pistols in both Blue and Stainless.

In the late 1970s, a friend of mine had a brace of all three Smith magnums in their presentation cases: the 27, the 29, and the 57, all with the rich Smith blueing. My .44 is a 4-inch Taurus (magna-ported, so it's loud but comfortable), my .41 is a 6.5-inch Blackhawk, my .357s are Ruger Security Six (4-inch), Ruger New Vaquero (5.5-inch), and S&W 60-15 (3-inch). If you had compared the 210-grain .41s to the 240-grain .44s, the difference would have been closer (in recoil), since weight factors more than speed. I admire you for shooting your DAs in double-action; I need to convert to that, and shoot them as they were designed. Thank you for sharing. Be safe, and happy shooting!

ballistically it all depends on how each is loaded. going by the manual a 180gr 44 can be loaded faster than a 170 41, and a 240gr 44 can be loaded within 50fps of a 210gr 41, but with much more energy. the sd is within 3-5 1000ths on average, some a little more, but none enough to make a difference.
the 41 advantage is a little less recoil at comparative velocities and weights.
the 44 advantage is bullet weight selection and much heavier.
both can be loaded down for more comfortable shooting.

I have a .41 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk which I handload for.
The cylinder is almost 1/8" longer than the OAL specified for the cartridge, and I seat bullets out to fill the cylinder, in order to create more powder capacity without compressing the powder.
I still have not fired any loads that show primer flattening and I'm getting 1500 FPS from a 5-1/2" barrel with 210 gr bullets and 2400, Lil'Gun and H110 powder.

I didn't mention charge weight for any of those loads but they were all about 95% filled for each powder and primers were not flattened after firing.
I started doing that because where i live in CA, lead-free bullets need to be used for hunting and a Barnes all copper 180 gr bullet is about the same length as a 240 gr .41 cal lead bullet.
Seating a bullet that long into the case eats up case capacity and it seemed like the obvious solution is to seat it out as far as the cyl allows.

Well, to be honest it was a small gun shop in Spring, TX in about 1982. Dirty Harry had all the Model 29s in short supply, LOL and they had this very nice, brand new Model 57 in the wooden box. I jumped and have been smiling ever since. Someday I will find a nice condition Model 58 for a companion gun. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.

The Model 57 came in several barrel lengths - 4", 6" and 8" (might be 8 3/8"). Most seem to be fitted with a 6" barrel, but I like 4" revolvers the best.

Other than some .22LR/Mag revolvers I have two Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag. One is a 2.25" spurless hammer model and is double-action only. The other is a 4.20" with adjustable fiber optic sights. I prefer to shoot the 4" in single action and noticed that you only shot your S&W in double action. Is that your preference? Either way, you shot them well in DA and at that distance. I should do a velocity difference between a 4.20" barrel and a 16" barrel from a Rossi lever action in 357 mag. I could also do the same with a 40 S&W as i have a carbine in this too. Great video and thanks again.

I shoot my DA revolvers double action 98% of the time, probably from too many years of carrying a revolver on duty. Check out my video on PPC practice, everything is fired double action, even the 50 yard line.

@@Halfmilesniper I hate the fact that ammo manufacturers ruin great cartridges like they do with piss poor ammo performance. I've owned 2 .41 mags going on 30 years and when I bought it 170-180 grain bullets were coming close to 1400 from my Blackhawk and well over 1300 from my 4" Smith. They've done the same thing to 10mm, .38 super and every other cartridge they've deemed unpopular. The .41 mag is strictly a handholding proposition for me nowadays.

would you believe me if i said my local store has a pair of those but 6" i think. 41 is blue, 44 is stainless. both used for a smidge under 1-large bill. i have a few 44s was thinking of a 41 but not sure if worth adding another set of dies to my inventory. i have been looking for a large frame blued revolver for sometime as all mine attract crows :-)

Since you reload, the .41 will fit right in. Factory ammo is expensive and hard to find. The .41 is a pleasure to shoot, I think you would enjoy a .41 Magnum.

Light 175 silver tips are much more pleasant to shoot than hot 210 gr from the 41mag! There isn't as much difference in recoil when comparing the two with heavier loads!

    • @Halfmilesniper
      @Halfmilesniper  3 года назад +1

I did find my 210 gr factory lead semi-wadcutter and my 215 gr lead semi wadcutter that I am experimenting with, that'll be in an upcoming video.
I had never run the 210 gr over the chrono, nor had I run my experimental load. Now I know I can bump up my experimental load if I can find more Hodgdon Clay's. No load data for that powder in 41 mag, but they have data for .44 Spcl so I am experimenting.

I think the "green screen" effect is due to the coloration of the wall and the light/position of the sun...no green screen used. That .44 does hit hard, the steel plate doesn't lie.

I would not try shooting .41 Mag from a .44 Mag gun...the 44 bullet is approximately .428" while the .41 is ~.410. That might not work out too well. Unless I misread that and you'll be shooting a gun chambered in .41 Mag.
