Ohh, that's a good point too. I always just assumed that if the leggings were tight enough then they might also help keep the skate steady on your ankle, and that might be why they do it.
I do it because it creates longer and nicer lines, but only with my black leggings, I don’t like the way it looks when skaters put their skin colored tights over their boots, it kinda ruins the illusion and make the outfit look « messy » for me 😕 (I mean there are other solutions to fix your laces)
@@Nuneliinot sure if im thinking of the wrong thing but Ive seen a lot of skin coloured tights over boots in olympics programs/routines, and always thought it looked neat, is that different...?
You can always try a different entrance! When first taught, salchows are typically taught with a three-turn. I learned this way and my salchow was so bad 💀 I tried my entrance from a mohawk and it improved my salchow so much! You can ask your coach to try the entrance but some coaches just have a preference for their students, especially if they’re just learning a jump.
Hard to explain via text, but for me it was key to understand the right rhythm of the jump. I always rushed into jumping instead of waiting on that edge and create the momentum for the jump to explode. Also, and this applies to all the jumps tbh, focus on jumping and giving rotation from your ankle instead of helping yourself with your arms and your knee. It took me learning a double to truly feel how important all these details are but it makes the difference!
@@sofiafigureskatesget full ice skate covers. It's made from the same material as leggings and looks like a bottomless sock. It covers the entire boot.
it also keeps ur ankles and bones warmer so u can move more smoothly and nicely without being as stiff and it stops the ice plow getting in ur skate and freezing ur ankles
I am not a figure skater, but I still do this with my jeans or pants when I go ice skating in winter. Unless you're wearing skinny jeans the fabric just creates unnecessary pressure points. And like you said, less likely to get your laces caught on something.
Oh ya, another thing. It also helps keep the laces tied! Recently for the past few competitions I’ve been in, my coach wanted my team to wear in the boot leggings and we had to use skate tape to keep the laces tied and not in the way and such
The main reason that I do it is so the laces are secure, as she stated. This is especially if I have longer laces, as to not trip over them somehow, and also while it's not the same thing, it kinda makes me feel better about my skates staying a little tighter without having to put tape on my laces every time I skate
I have paramilitary boots that have lace hooks and the amount of times I trip when my feet are close enough for them to catch is ridiculous sometimes. I deffo see why you’d wear leggings over those.
i do that mostly because if I stuff all that fabric in it'll make dents on my skin, and that additional friction may rub my skin off or give me blisters. Also to keep the laces in place and prevent them from losening, and protects the boots from being scratched either by my blades or the ice when i fall.
it also prevents scratching and gauging your skates when doing harder jumps (When you get to higher level of jumps, axels and above, tape you skates cause there expensive and it keeps them nice!)
when i had beginner skates from amazon i wore leggings to keep my skates tighter without having to numb my feet with the laces, now i wear leg warmers to protect my laces
Omg if I could just live in my fantasy of being able to do figure skating and just skate around a place by myself with me own music I know it would take so much work though and money that I don’t have, plus the interacting with other people and the necessary failings before I could actually do what I’d want to do. It would just take so much energy I don’t feel like I have to spare right now. Though going ice skating more often would still be nice
It also keeps my ankles warm, keeps the laces contained and tied, plus protects my boots from when I stab myself on accident. Also it keeps the pants down and ensures that they won’t start bunching up around your ankles and causing your skate to loosen or lessening your ankle mobility
now that i think about it, it can keep laces from getting loose. it can keep the ice off (which melts on laces) and makes them loose. i believe that’s one reason why some hockey players wear clear skate guards over their laces
These are all valid uses. I simply thought "to keep more warm throughout their body without enabling cold air go into that gap by the ankle". Good to know more points~
same thing with wrestling. if u dont have velcro on ur shoe, or u want more covering, u can wrap ur laces so they dont come untied during a match. some meets will make u wrap them too.
We do it to protect the skate from when we fall, but we cover the whole skate we’re just not allowed to used the skate cover when we’re on tournament or presentation so we use the thighs with built-in skate cover
hockey player here , when i’m on the ice i also tuck my laces into my hockey socks or if i’m not in hockey gear then into my sweat pants because i don’t want to rick cutting my laces and tripping . it truly comes down to personal preference people also just type their laces around their ankles or don’t tuck them in cause they don’t feel the need to , ice just had a few to many problems in the past with skates to risk adding another to the list.
As a figure skater, mostly everyone at the rink doesn't fully put their lower part of our pants completely at the bottom, because it can cause holes. Since there's extra fabric at the bottom, I pull it down, but not to the point it catches on the bottom, nor it bunches up at the top. Also I haven't seen a single skater tuck their leggings into their skates, they mostly use gel socks and almost always nylons :)
I'm a ballroom and Latin dancer, we do something very similar! Sometimes our dance leggings come with holes at the soles to put our dance heels through, just to help them stay put and secure x
I’m a professional skater and I used to not put my long pants over them and got my laces stuck together and fell on the and I was bleeding 🩸 in my nose both sides so I’m just saying if ur new or want to learn ice skating then be careful and put something over ur laces. Stay safe!😊😊❤❤
As a hockey player i put my hockey socks over my skates to prevent snow/loose ice from getting in my skate as well and to keep the laces out of the way.
Obv if you tie your shoes right there shouldn't be any big gaps but there will always be a little spot where the cold air blows and I personally just rlly find it uncomfortable. Leg warmers rlly make it much better for me
For me, especially in areas of skating were we get close to each other in pivot blocks and whips etc(synchro), there is always a risk of us tripping over our own laces(if they are especially long). Or even worse our loops getting caught on another person's hooks(hard fall). Also when jumping(for me at least) my feet get pretty close and spinning of course. Also the lines for sure and the warmth 😌😌. only my opinion tho. for me having the tucked thing is more-so for safety than lines tho, plus its more convenient than taping the laces(still tape for competition tho...)
As a figure skater I never do this but I probably should do it but it’s a habit to not do it but I all ways tuck in my laces so I don’t trip. Another tip for figure skating is tie your hair up so it doesn’t get in your face. Also always watch where your going I once did not do this a got hit and fell to the ground when a girl was doing a trick. So morel of the story be carful when skating.
I also put my leg warmers over my skates because the gap in between your skate and your leggings could get cold. But yes. Keeping your laces secure so you don’t trip on them is the most important reason why
I’m a roller skater and former ballerina and I never thought of this! I’m gonna wear some leg warmers on cold days over the laces now, I hate when they get caught in stuff
I always covered my skates with my leggings cus they were too long for me but once in my dress i had tights that were inside of my skates and my lace untied and i tripped😭
I once saw someone in Hockey put their socks over their skates. She just grew up like that but nobody else did it. But the thing is that once you get old enough, you don’t have pants to put over your skates on
It's warmer. Thats why. Even guys do this for the same reason. Pulling them over keeps the cold air from going up the borrow of the leggings. Rinks are often much colder for practice than during competition. The heating system isn't run as high and there are less bodies in the building to keep the temp up. During competitions this is unnecessary because the rink is warm.
I remember doing this as a kid, it annoyed the heck outta me when the leggings got stuck between my heel and the shoe and I couldn’t move comfortably…ever since I put it over the skates…I can now also tie them a lot tighter!
I'm not a professional and I personally don't like the way it looks, but seeing so many pros do it when I was taking classes (I did four levels and stopped just short of starting spins and jumps) made me think of it as a sign of a pro skater. If I'd gone further, it's possible I would have done it just to look like a pro. 😅
I get this question so many times and it’s really simple. I learned the hard way where I was spinning and my skate 😅 caught together and that was a big mistake.
As a former figure skater I just want to say that the part of her video where she said that it makes better lines is a lie. It’s the same skate and lines are made from force.
I’ve legit had so many issues which my laces getting hooked together while skating. It’s SUPER annoying and I’ve fallen quite a few times because of it. I don’t figure skate anymore but I definitely remember that was a contributor to why I fell a bunch during things like spins
Also prevents any loose ice from getting inside of the skate

it also keeps my ankles warm and if my skates come loose it helps keep my laces tighter than it would be without
