  • Hello Skaters! Today I am going to teach you the basics of how to do a Two Foot Spin, with a proper gliding entrance and exit. This spin will need two skills that I have taught in previous videos, a marching ‘Helecopter Spin’ and a Hockey Glide. You can find links to both those tutorials below... Happy Skating Thrive Squad!

    Summary for when I'm on the ice:
    Two-foot spin: use a line, hockey glide, left curve, left arm FW right arm out, turn tighter when returning to line to make heart shape, wait until leading toe points to starting position, right foot makes half swizzle, arms pull to left side (heart), toes together, on rocker. Maintain tension on arms, abductors, core (a little FW lean)

I guarantee you, I would be your first subscriber. basic spins (two and one foot), two foot turns, 3 turns, mohawks, etc. It would be a big hit. Lots of lefties in the world. :)

    I haven't been on the ice in at least 3 years for quite a few reasons-- I decided this year I'd like to at least try to pick it back up. It's all for hobby, mostly just to see if I *can* do it given some mental and physical challenges, and it's fun to at least skate around and stay upright! When I left off, I was trying to learn a two foot spin but could NOT find a video with instructions as well thought out and that work with my brain as yours. At the time, no one ever told me to point my toes in or how to use the muscles in my core, arms, or legs even though it seems like it should be common sense. I'm starting again this weekend, hopefully in the future I can work my way back up to this :)

    I'm getting better...I'm up to 11.5 revolutions and I like to do it at slow speed, that's easier. I just leave my arms held out wide and get all the power from my leg and then I rotate slowly and only pull my arms in toward the end. One tip my coach gave me that helped immediately is to stay down with the bent knee. Don't stand up straight as soon as the spin starts, stay down. That helps you stay off the toe pick. I have been working on the "right toe in, right heel out" position and it takes some time to get that. It helps to rotate slowly because then you can push that right heel out during the spin and it doesn't crash you while rotating slowly. I just now noticed that Coach Julia is skating with both heels out/toes in, so I'll work on that. I discovered in my last session that skating on the inside edge of the left blade seems to help, but I never heard any coach mention that. Here's a question: Is Coach Julia spinning on the outside edges of both blades? When she's showing us the toe position she seems to be on the outside edge.

    Hi Julia, I just want to say absolutely wonderful work with your videos. The format is excellent, you have such a lovely calm and pleasant manner about you and your instructions are brilliantly explained. I have seen a number of instructional videos from different channels and some of them are pretty decent, with some pros and cons here or there.
    However, I have to say your channel is by far the best I have seen, even down to the quality of the camera/footage that you are using which is excellent and this factor alone makes such a difference when trying to focus in on all the specific little tips that you pass on, or the fine details so to speak. For example, when you are zooming in on specific parts of the blade or just demonstrating general technique it's all very clear and fairly immersive
    It's clear to see how much work and thought you put into these videos, and I think as far as online experiences will allow, this is definitely the next best thing next to personal coaching at the moment.
    So just wanted to give credit where it was due, keep up the amazing work, it is genuinely recognised and appreciated. 🙌

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 года назад +2

      Oh my word, what an amazing bit of feedback. I appreciate it so much. I do try to be thoughtful about the videos I create, and put out a 'product' that is something people will really benefit from and so it really makes me feel good to hear such incredibly positive words like this. Thank you.

    • @bench130
      @bench130 3 года назад +1

      @@CoachJulia You are absolutely welcome Julia, and like I say genuine credit where it's due.
      It's obvious when watching your videos that you have put a lot of time, and thought into them, and when you add your unique very engaging, calm, lovely personality into that mix then it brings a fantastic overall combination.
      I guess to try and add some sort of observational context here to what makes your videos so genuine feeling.
      I would say when I watch many other instructional videos out there, many of them simply 'show you a technique', and don't get me wrong some of the videos are very good.
      However, what comes across in your videos in your personality is that you don't just want to 'teach a technique', of course, that element is there.
      However, it's like you actually 'want people to learn' and get better, not just for what you are showing on that particular video, but with that overall 'bigger picture' in mind, building on from week to week.
      With this, I mean giving constant reminders of what was learned the week before, including previous links, explaining how the moves are all connected and flow from one into another like it's part of one large jigsaw puzzle.
      You are also so open to creating new videos on anything that people feel are challenging them.
      Hopefully, all of that makes sense, but generally speaking, an excellent overall job on your part.
      I think the thing to remember and I say this believe me as someone who genuinely doesn't comment too much on RUclips videos. It's easy to hit like, subscribe when you watch and enjoy something and that, of course, is absolutely fine.
      However, what I think is easy to forget sometimes how much work actually goes into some of these videos and that end product.
      I mean we aren't just talking about throwing a quick video together, it's everything from the moment you plan out the video, travel to the rink, set up camera equipment or get people to assist with various angles, probably do a few takes, then do all of your editing work, linking previous relevant videos, and most likely many other taskings.
      I mean at absolute best you are talking many many hours I imagine even for a short video.
      So that's why when it's obvious that someone has put a lot of work and thought into creating something like you have done then it's nice to acknowledge their efforts with genuinely positive comments.
      I'm also sure I speak for many here with some of what I have said, they are just more efficient at communicating it. One of my flaws which I'm working on (which is probably obvious 😉) is why use 10 words when you can use 100.
      On a serious note though, it is appreciated, so keep up the amazing work. 🙌

      @@lilyloves1 yes and I absolutely agree with you too Lily. There are so many RUclipsrs out of varying standards.
      There are some good ones but there are a few very rare ones who stand out from the rest in my opinion and immediately you can see how much thought and time they put into their videos, genuinely thinking of everything.
      Coach Julia is unquestionably one of those people and deserves huge credit.
      I guess as a RUclipsr particularly a hard working one like Julia it’s hard to show the audience just how much work you have put in behind the scenes in what turns out to be a 10-20 minute video.
      The reality is that many hours have been put in, travelling, booking the rink, editing and many other things.
      So that’s why I personally just wanted to take the time to give her credit where it was due as the background effort really comes across in her videos.
      Glad to hear that you agree too Lily 🙌🙌

      Yay, so glad you have got your spin down! Centering a spin is tricky. You have to be very careful to complete your fun 'heart shaped' entrance, and also maintain even pressure with both feet during the spin. 😁

  • @deesterdee6650
    @deesterdee6650 4 года назад

    Love it!!🥰 I used the hockey glide entrance to a pivot two foot soon you taught us to pass my basic 5 spin test. The momentum into the spin helped me get more rotations but now I know that muscle tension like you explained can help the spin last longer. Thanks so much!
    Have you ever skated on synthetic ice? My rink won't open to general public at times I can go until the fall. Was considering getting some of this to practice spins and there turns on my patio.

    • @CoachJulia

      I am always so happy to hear that my tutorials are helping people. I have not skated on synthetic ice. For all my years of show skating, I was fortunate in that I always had real Ice. I do have a student who has gotten synthetic ice during the pandemic rink shutdown. she says it feels very similar but a bit slower that real ice.

    hi coach. I’m wondering if there’s a general rule that beginners can follow to identify which arm goes in the front? In 3turn video, the rule is “hug the center”, but in some other moves, like going into one foot spin, it’s not the case anymore. Is there a simple rule to follow? Thank you! ❤

    Thank you for the tutorial, this was very helpful and I really appreciate you drew the patterns, this is great help for me. I have a question though, so far I just manage to do very slow 2 foot spins from standing still and I’ve noticed I kind of put one foot slightly in front of the other, the foot that is slightly in front will have more weight towards the heel and the foot sightly back will have more weight on the ball of the foot, is this bad technique? Thank you so much for your videos and it’s great to see you back 💙⛸

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 года назад +1

      Hey! That is a great question. So technically it is bad technique, sorry!😬. If you rotate counter clockwise and have your right foot slightly in front, then that is correct, you just will want to work on getting up onto the ball of your foot. Eventually you will want to learn how to do backward spins, so you want to have enough muscle control to be able to get onto the ball, and now is a good time to practice that.

    Thank you Julia. My struggle is using too much toe pick and stretching the ice during the spin then slowing down the speed. The most I could do is just 6 revolutions. 4 is the usual.... I can't break thru 6 revolution 😢

    I’m gonna learn my spins tomorrow. How do you prevent getting dizzy?

  • @coldservings
    @coldservings 3 года назад +1

    My instructor had us starting these with pivots rather than stepping around. Indeed, pretty much every online ice coach type video does the stepping around bit so I guess it's my instructors who are the odd ones out.
    I'm apparently an odd person--right handed but I spin and pivot better to the right. However, attempting to learn spins made clear to me a far more basic flaw in my figure skating form--I tend to break forward at the waist, a bad posture habit I have from off ice too. A lot of things you can do on ice and get away with that. You might not be as elegant or efficient, but you can do them. Spinning is not one of them. So that means correcting that flaw is now critical. The problem is that when I tell myself to "straighten up" my body interprets it as "lean back" and when I do that, I tend to fall off the back of of the skates. Best I've been able to come up with is to think of stretching my heat upward, not just "look up" but stretching my head up toward the ceiling. I still see a little bit of forward lean when I catch my reflection in the glass around the rink, but it's better than it was.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 года назад

      Hi there, thanks for watching. Breaking in the hip is a pretty common problem, usually it means that you need to do a better job of activating and using your quads. So besides just thinking of straightening up, think of pressing down more in your knees. For a spin entrance you want your inside shoulder to line up just in front/inside of your hip, and your hip just in front/inside of your knee, with a really deep knee bend. So next time you practice, think deep knees, in addition to activating your back.

I always turn once or twice around and then go too far forward and almost topple over. I do better at one foot, but I will try using your advice and see if it helps. Somewhere along the line I’ll get it, I hope.

    Hi Julia, I’ve been your forever follower since the first day of figure skating. This video was my first tutorial for spins and now I can do 15+ revolutions in my scratch. So thank you so much! BUT, I found I sorta lost my two-foot spin cuz I was always applying the power and muscle engagements of the one-foot spin to the two-foot one, and ending up with crazily rocking super fast two-foot spins😅 is it a common thing for advanced spinner getting confused about the two-foot spins?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Год назад

      Congrats on getting super strong spins! It definitely is common to struggle with the two foot spin once you can do a good 1 foot entry. It requires really getting into your left knee on the 'hook' before the spin, and then waiting on right leg power until you are deep into your left knee.

    Thank you for the thorough explanation and how you break down the technique. I noticed your head is turned to the left and slightly down. Does that help? I do not have ballet training, spotting isn't working for me because I can't get the hang of it.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 года назад +1

      Glad it was helpful. I do turn my head to the left on purpose, to help just get that little extra energy into the spin. you never want to spot when spinning on the ice, that will actually slow down and throw off your spins. Great question!
