- A celebrity makeup artist, Mary Phillips recently shared how she does the underpainting makeup technique on her celebrity clients. Let’s just say this makeup technique went viral on social media. What is underpainting makeup? It’s essentially applying cream or liquid makeup products such as contour, bronzer, highlight, and concealer underneath your foundation to achieve a softy sculpted complexion. Working the makeup in layers helps to pay attention to detail to enhance your natural facial features. In the end, you end up using far less makeup than the traditional method.

Milana, this is THE look for you. So pretty!
I started underpainting about a year ago after watching Nina Ubhi's videos and wont go back! I am almost 40 and I had a young 20 year old staring at me in the grocery check out line and she said "your base is flawless". It was very nice to hear... but it's also true. LOL
I follow Nina too! I'm 36 and new at make up so I only have the basics but I have learned tons from her.
Wow that must have been a great feeling.
I learned this technique from Wayne Goss. I use liquid foundation and then use cream blush. I've been doing this technique everyday for 3 years. This ends up staying all day. You did a great job!
This technique makes your skin look absolutely beautiful 👍
I’m subbing because even makeup artists have tried this and it came out looking like a wreck or so much makeup, there’s no way it won’t immediately transfer or melt off totally. She actually did it where you use very little product and it still looks fantastic.
I have tried this technique so many times following other tik tok tutorials and always turn into a big pink mess. But I think your way makes most sense. Thank you! I will definitely be trying tonight!
Same. I don’t have the patience (or the skill) to keep everything from blending all together and making one muddy mess. I just feel like I have more control adding color back after foundation. The only thing I’ve found this technique helpful for is very pigmented blush.
Beautiful makeup as always! 💕 I love your videos!
This technique that you used to create this look is beautiful. A really soft everyday look 🤩.
Stunning! 🤩 Thank you for sharing a somewhat minimal technique that anyone can use to enhance their unique and natural beauty. This is beautiful!
As a makeup artist I have seen this method being on TikTok and Instagram, RUclips, facebook you name it it’s gone viral and my clients are asking me to do this method of application on them. Yes I can do it but NO I am afraid that I won’t. The reason is that I have been a licensed cosmetologist since I left college which is trust me more years than I care to remember! Lol. I book myself into classes at least 3 times a year to keep up with new products and methods of applying them. If I was to do a full face of makeup how I was trained to do it would look outdated and that’s why I attend the classes to keep me up with the times and trends. This method goes against everything that I have mastered over the years and if it’s not broken then why fix it! Much love Milana darling ❤ I absolutely love you and your beautiful family 💖💙💙💗 xoxoxoxo
It’s just a stupid Trend on tik tok . The content creators just do what’s trending to make money on videos. Remember this is their business . That’s all . Plus she is one of the most silent creators out there .she rarely speaks out directly . It’s just a job for her. .
Very natural! Beautiful!❤
Looks gorgeous! Nice warm glow.
Love that you did another video showcasing this pallette. I really want to get it. The only thing it's missing for me is a cooler toned contour color, but this turned out so natural & pretty!
That lip color on you is so stunning and flattering! Keep it in frequent rotation :D
I agree it’s pretty
Beautiful. I think I might try this.
I love how your brushes are always clean lol
Why didn’t you do checking in different time, to see its longitivtiy?? I was looking for that.
Your makeup looks so good!!
Amazingly beautiful work
I always look forward to your videos. 😊😊
Exciting!! Xo from California ❤
You did a beautiful look. I think this would take a lot of practice and time. Palette is such a great idea for travel. ❤
Very informative. Thank you
Great video thank you . I would need Expresso definitely having fun applying my makeup
Beautiful.. Was wondering what it would like, AMAZING!!!!. Love from Kansas🥰
You look very naturally beautiful ❤
this technique reminds me of how Seint makeup is applied. If I remember right you didn't like Seint? After doing this does it make you want to try the Seint makeup again? Just curious. You're always beautiful and I love your videos. And you have the CUTEST family!
I was just thinking the exact same thing! I love using Seint for this reason. I wonder if more people will be interested in trying it. I don’t sell it either, I’m just a consumer.
Same. I love it!
I thought the same thing. She came down hard on seint makeup. Then has raved about that makeup cream pallet she used in the video. Which is basically exactly seint makeup. My guess would be that if seint wasn’t a MLM type of company she might would have tried harder and would have had more positive thoughts about it.
@@kellymarion5772 yes, I can see why people are so hesitant. I was the same way but honestly just gave it a try as a consumer just like we do to anything else and I have loved it ever since! My skin has improved and I love how easy the technique is. I wish more people would give it a shot and set the whole MLM thing aside.
I use seint myself, as well as other brands. Watching this I was surprised she was being so complimentary. I agree, I think because seint is an mlm, she was against it from the beginning. I love watching her but this just put a sour taste out for me.
Oooh I noticed that your camera you’re filming with in this video is ultra high definition! I haven’t noticed it in your other recent videos but I like how HD it is, it’s nice!!
You look like a doll ❤❤
I love your channel!! Could you do a Sunkissed makeup look up with like a nude pink lip for the upcoming warm weather. Thank you.
I've heard to get cream to spread easier, spray the brush or have with setting spray then blend.
This is one of my favorite looks on you. I couldn't pull it off because my skin freaks out when too much is piled on.
I don’t understand why people do this. It’s meant for the camera and photo shoots and not to look natural in person. But why not just blend everything out as you normally would? Seems to save a lot more time.
She did this the best I’ve seen anyone do before. Usually it’s hella harsh and piles of products on the face. This looks gorgeous. She changed my mind .
I wish an experienced painter would make a video addressing this, but since no one has stepped forward, a snarky comment will have to do. As a traditional painter who is also a pro makeup artist for 25 years, this new push to categorize highlighting, contouring and blush under foundation as "underpainting" is like nails on a chalk board because although highlighting and contouring (in any order) in makeup application share some similarities with the concept of underpainting in art--- in the sense that both involve layering and creating depth---they are totally different techniques used in totally different contexts. Let me clarify:
With highlighting and contouring in makeup (in any order, above or below foundation), we are enhancing the three-dimensional appearance of the face with products that are lighter and darker than the natural skin tone to create the illusion of depth, emphasize features, and reshape the contours of the face. Basically, the goal is to sculpt the face by placing light and shadow to get the desired look.
"Underpainting," on the other hand, specifically refers to a painting technique in traditional visual arts where first layer of paint applied is used to establish values, colors, and composition before adding more detailed layers. Both highlighting and contouring and underpainting do involve layering for the purpose of creating depth and enhancing features, but they really are very different techniques used in very different ways in very different fields. From the traditional artistry perspective, the co-opting of this term has been cringeworthy.
How is the blending? Does it take a bit of elbow grease or very easily?
I learned this technique many years ago in esthetics school. We called this type of application film/theater makeup. Why? Because it is a heavier application of color to help the lights not wash out people facial features… hence all the contour and highlight. You did an amazing job but for everyday wear I wouldn’t recommend it.
Great video! P.s there’s a typo in the thumbnail 😊
❤ you are gorgeous. Greetings from Germany!
You look so healthy and beautiful. Reminds me of the covers of 17 magazine in the 80s.
Where did you get that beautiful headband?
How is nobody talking about the powder falling out?😂
LOL That was the sponge
Seriously, does no one pay attention??🤷♀️
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have wanted to try this technique… I don’t have a pallet like that… I have sticks from Mally
You can use sticks and regular foundation. Tati on RUclips under paints all the time with various products.
What is the name of the pallet?
😂 Are we just gonna pretend that the pan didn’t fall out of the Makeup Forever palette? lmfao, she had no reaction
You might want to watch the video again.
That was the application sponge the compact comes with that fell out!!!!
So this is basically just like the Seint makeup and it's application, that you didn't like in an earlier video.
Ok im a Seint cream makeup user. This isnt looking good because i think these colors are off, not a match for your skin . They are trying to copy Seints method without using the color match first. Not a fan of this brand. Seint cream makeup is awesome. But it does take some learning curves. Thanks for trying!
I’m not sure this is any different then just putting all cream options on and blending
This is Scott Barnes very famous routine. This other makeup artist bluntly stole credit for it.
Agreed.

First 🥹👍🏼
Do people really do this??? And some also on a daily basis??? 😮😅
Milana never replies to people / you’re all wasting breathe 😂. I have followed her for 5 years 🤦🏻♀️😂
