So a big thank you for the bang on the fuel tank tip! When it's -12c (10f for the Americans) outside getting the truck in the shop is a must. Went from not starting to being able to back it into the warm shop to get the tank out and pump swapped. My fuel line from the pump didn't want to unhook easily, so I just cut the old pump connection off and removed the piece from the line afterwards. Much simpler than fighting with a seized connector. Thanks again for the great video!

I have a 2005-Ram 1500. I'm about to do the exact same thing because I followed through with all of your checks and discovered that it did start for a few seconds after I banged on the bottom of the tank so it is indeed the fuel pump and I'm about to change it myself!! $120 well spent! Thank you with this information because I would not know what to do otherwise.

Just found this vid. Thanks so much for posting. 08, 1500 5.7, I thought the TIPM was not working but did some testing of the fuel pump circuit and found it to be a bad pump. Great video! The bang on the gas tank trick helped me diagnose it right away. Before doing anything else, I hit it a couple of times like the video and it started right up! I had to unbolt the bed and block it up a foot high in order to get enough access room to remove the fuel lines and electrical connection. Then still couldn't get the locking collar off until I dropped the tank completely down and pulled it out to get to wail on it with a hammer. Took me the better part of the weekend, but succeeded. $75 total cost instead of $1000 I've paid to have it done to a couple of other vehicles in the past. Thanks for your help!

Does the fuel pump have a fuel filter on it or is there a filter in the actual tank. I’ve tried all the research trying to find that answer

    • @FixItPhillip

Some older models have a external in line filter. This one did not. Only the sock filter on the fuel pump itself

@@FixItPhillip I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7. I’ve replaced the battery, alternator, starter, all fuses related to the fuel pump, replaced the ignition switch relay, ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder. Only thing I can think of is it’s the fuel tank I’m having issues with or electrical. Turn the key the accessories come on but the battery needle and the fuel don’t come on at all. But if I take the battery cable off for atleast a few hours the fuel and battery needle come on but if your parked on a incline the truck shuts off

Just wanted to thank you so much for this video! I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 and everything looks identical to yours. Did the diagnosis steps you mentioned and when the truck sort of started and sputtered a bit after hitting the bottom of gas tank, we knew it was the fuel pump. Bought a used transmission jack off craigslist to use for this and we went through the whole process occasionally referencing your video again at times. End result, truck runs great again now and you saved us a TON of money. Thank you so much! You're a great mechanic!

@FixItPhillip Thank you!! Here's the background story of why I'm very thankful. Two weeks ago, I had a fuel pump installed by a mechanic. Earlier in the morning today, the truck started squirting amounts of gas (I had a full fuel tank, and now I have half). Since I have to go to work the next day, I needed to get this fixed. The only problem was that I didn't know what I was facing until I searched RUclips and found your video explaining details on how to replace a fuel pump. I was able to learn how it was connected. When I went to check the truck. The hose that attaches to the fuel pump was disconnected. We went ahead and connected the fuel hose until it made a click, and it was firm now. I followed your instructions on not starting the truck right away but put it on ignition a few times, and then I started the truck and drove it around the block. There's no gas leakage, but to be on the safe side, I'm going to have another mechanic take a look at it and make sure I can it drive it long distance.

He is right, this is how you diagnose and solve but it might not give you enough time to drive. It was my first signal for the issue. If you have a problem with your fuel pump, just replace it before you drive

Make sure you blow all the crap off before pulling the old pump. Once the locking ring is off you see in his video that the fuel pump is still seated down, so take advantage of that and clean everything you can do you lessen the chance of dropping garbage in to your fuel pump.

The solution can be the plugin that takes the power from the battery to the fuel pump. Just wiggle the cables around so that the plug clicks and it will start right away. Do no change fuel pump before trying this. I just got mine fixed by doing that. Mine would crank but it would not start. When the fuel pump dies, the truck will shut down even if running. Let me know if this helps and I can be more detailed

Unfortunately I came across this video after I was finished troubleshooting the truck not starting...(1999 Dodge Dakota; 5.2L)...
I probably watched 10 to 15 videos while trying to figure out what was wrong and none of them were as good as this one...
After I realized that I was not hearing the fuel pump, when I turned the key, I went through all my the steps to find out why...I didn't have much for tools (of course it happened away from home), all I had was a multi-meter...
Anyway, every once in a while, when I'd turn the key, I would hear the pump...I traced the failure to the tank...I dropped the tank; not easy with two bottle jacks, a small piece of plywood, and, of course, half a tank of gas...
After I got the pump out I was checking the connectors inside the tank and found that the top connector looked a bit gummed up...on one of the videos I had watched the guy said that the little pin connectors could get fouled and lose contact...so I cleaned the connector best I could, crawled under the truck and plugged the pump back in...crawled back out, and turned the key; I heard the pump start up, so I figured I'd found the problem...I tested the pump a couple more times and it continued to work, so I put it back in the tank and slid the tank back under the truck (I'm glad I had a handyman jack to lift the driver side up enough to slide the tank out from under and then back under the truck...and I did empty the tank when I got it out)...I positioned the tank so I could reconnect everything, and before mounting the tank, I turned the key to make sure the pump was still running...I pushed the tank back up into place, put the straps on and put the nuts on just enough to hold the straps in place...again, I turned the key to make sure the pump was still running...I heard the whirr of the pump so I crawled under the truck and tightened the nuts...crawled back out and poured five gallons of fuel into the tank, tried to start the truck, and nothing, no whirring from the fuel pump...still convinced it was a wiring problem, I crawled back under and started tapping on the connector on the top of the tank with my baby crescent...nothing...frustrated, I pounded my fist on the bottom of the tank and, you guessed it, the pump began to whirr...I crawled out from under the truck, turned the key to engage the starter, and it fired right up...
I left it running while I gathered up the tools; before I could get everything put away the engine started to sputter and cough...I jumped in the truck and pushed down on the pedal; the engine back-fired a couple times so I took my foot off...I jumped under the truck and pounded on the tank again and right away the engine started purring...
I headed towards home praying that I would make it the 30 miles or so...the engine would run fine for a bit but then lose power, spitting and sputtering...after stopping a few times to jump out and pound on the bottom of the tank I decided I'd try rocking the truck...I turned the steering wheel, sharply, back and forth a few times...the engine straightened up, and regained power, and I didn't have any trouble with it after that...
I wasn't sure what I was going to do, until after I watched your video; I am ordering a new fuel pump..
Great video, wish I'd seen it first, it would have saved me a lot of trouble and time...would have saved my hands too; all those heat shields under there have some pretty sharp edges...all I had to take the straps off with was a 15 mm box wrench...

After replacing the fuel pump I can feel the difference in the pedal, not sure if that’s related or not. But I still have the non start issue. I noticed while changing out the pump that there was a kink in the fuel line next to the connector, perhaps that is the problem. However when I looked at the fuse box there is a battery draw which comes from slot M7 and goes to slot M25 for the fuel dsl lift pump. Not sure why or if that is a problem.

I replaced my pump, ran well for 3 weeks. After a 3 hour trip check engine turned on and gave me a fuel sensor issue running high. And than the fuel gauge wouldnt ready for a few minutes. Is it a faulty pump or fuel pump relay issue. 2010 4.7 1500

2004 Ram 1500 5.7... Runs good for a few days, then starts developing a skip at idle and sometimes under load. If I pull the ECM fuse and then try to start the truck, it does the 2 dings and resets the ECM. Put the fuse back in and it will run really well for a few days again. All routine maint has been done including all 16 plugs. I am thinking the ECM is going bad. Thoughts?

Hey my 2012 ram 1500 lost power while driving. My first thought was fuel pump, it was able to start a couple minutes later. But since hasn’t been able to start up again. When I turn the key I hear the pump turn on but still won’t start. I bought a fuel pump relay bypass from amazon I read about but still won’t start. (Heard those years has a bad problem with tipm going out) Pump turns on when I test it. Cranks and turns over just like yours did in the video. Any ideas?

Hello, i know this was a old video, but you seem pretty sharp on stuff. I have a 05 ram 1500 w/ 5.7. Hemi that cranks but wont start. Has new plugs, coils, wires, crankshaft sensor, cam sensor, new fuel pump, maf sensor and plenty of spark, 57 psi in fuel rail. Just wont start. Only thing not replaced is pcm and throttle body. Have any ideas?

When blowing the top of the tank off use caution. You see several dozen divots in the top of the fuel pump that also fill up with dirt/gravel. I blew mine off and as I was pulling the air nozzle back across the top I recovered the fuel pump with all the crap from down in these divots. So, if you blow the top off blow these out first so you don’t have to redo what you have already done. Also, the contents of these divots blow UP, not away, so I got tons of this stuff in my hair. I learned to wear a hat, or ripper cap, when doing this.

One of the things that I would definitely recommend telling your viewers is that you should push the EV valve back next to the fuel line that you disconnect at first you could risk snapping it which ended up happening.

test the crankshaft sensor - back probe the sensor and turn the engine by hand while watching the voltmeter and see if voltage drops from 5 to 0 a few times per revolution.
