Watching this video with my two iPads and an iPhone in front of me to clear up the mess I created by not paying attention to where these files were going. Thanks, Pete
You’re welcome. Yeah, I get a heap of questions about this so wanted a single video to point folks too if they are struggling with their iOS files - like I was!!
Thanks for the helpful video! I have a lot of .wav files in my GarageBand File Transfer folder. Can I just safely delete those once they're integrated in a project?

Fantastic tutorial Pete. I never knew what Shortcuts could be useful for..one question, how come zipped files can't be stored on iCould Drive, only your device or 3rd party like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc?
Hey there. Zip files can indeed be stored on your other cloud storage platforms. Not sure what I mentioned on this one? This video has more details / ruclips.net/video/nlAbvrH_aXc/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic It was at 23:37, “Funnily enough . . .” It looks like you couldn’t save the zipped file back to iCloud Drive but had to save to your iPhone device. I just wasn’t sure why that was...
This may not be directly related to this video, and I have researched this extensively on the net. I just finished a project on GB ios v 2.3.12, and now when i open GB, there are NO recent projects listed. I find solutions online for Mac, but nothing for ios. I have the setting for saving files on the ipad, not on icloud. Luckily I did a decent mix before it was gone, but there's lots of tweaking I'd like to do, and all my old songs seem to be gone also. Can you help? Can't manage my files if they ain't there!
That’s really odd? Have you tried searching by name in the Files app? It shouldn’t remove any files just by updating. ruclips.net/video/bcACnhiUwBc/видео.html
Thx Pete. I have iPad Pro iOS 13.3.1 and GarageBand 2.3.8 . Question: Why do my project files only show in Recents and not in Browse? In GarageBand, “On my iPad” only shows the Create Song icon and the GarageBand for iOS folder. Inside the GarageBand iOS folder the Transfer Files folder exists that your video helped me create and also an “Original Recordings” folder I created. None of my 19 projects files show in Browse that do show in Recents. Is this Operator Error or something to do with iPad/iOS or GarageBand versions?
Hey Todd. Not quite following here sorry? The “recent” tab will show any recent projects saved on both the “On my iPad” and iCloud Drive locations. I suggest checking the two locations and determining where things are actually being saved. If you have specific questions feel free to email me and I can try to troubleshoot with you. Pete@studiolivetoday.com
Pete, with the Garageband version with IOS 14.4 on Ipad do you need to zip up the project files or is it automatically done for you when you export the project file? Thank, Art
Hey there. If sharing with other platforms like Google Drive and a Dropbox you need to zip up as it’s not done automatically by GarageBand. ruclips.net/video/qMjd6ziU4aY/видео.html
Hello Pete, I am a new subscriber, but not new to your channel. I love your content. I use to record in a small home studio and when the computer died, I packed everything up and quit recording. I've gone from a flip phone to having an iPad and iPhone and am in technology overload at the moment.I have decided to give recording a go using your channel as my guide. I am a bit confused about the i Cloud,Google drive option when deleting files from the iPad. I assume deleting files from my iPad will not delete them from i Cloud or Google Drive? I will have to test this theory. Thank you for your channel and all you for us.
Hey Timothy. Great to have you onboard my friend! Yes, file management in iOS and GarageBand isn’t as straightforward as it should be. Here’s how it breaks down: 1. If you use the “On my IPad” or “On my iPhone” location, try is is not backed up to iCloud or anywhere else. You can zip and backup manually to Dropbox, Google Drive etc using the method I shoe in this video - ruclips.net/video/nlAbvrH_aXc/видео.html 2. If you use the “iCloud Drive” location, thy is is synced and backed up to the cloud. However if you delete from there on your iPad/iPhone it also deletes from the cloud / which is a little frustrating right? 3. If you run out of space it will offload your files from your device, leaving them just in your iCloud. You can then re-download them when you want them. But there’s no way to manually do this. What do I do? Duplicate the project over to my “on my iPad”, zip it up and upload to Google Drive. Then delete from iCloud. Clunky I know, but the most effective way I have found.
Pete Johns oh Pete thank you for replying. So if I delete from on my iPad it’s local storage and will be deleted. Deleting from iCloud and google drive from iPad also deletes from those services?makes no sense. Well I will dig deeper into your videos but it is going to take time. You have a lot of content.
Yes, but if you upload using the Google Drive app you get much better control as you can upload to the cloud and not take up storage space. It it needs to be a zip. Yes, this stuff is confusing. 🤷🏻♂️
Peter i may have missed it, however i don't know how to get the greyed out saved files not to be grey anymore and able to be opened I'm sure you mentioned it somewhere however I've been watching so many videos I'm kinda fatigued. Please advise.
Hey there Tre. Sounds like you might be having issues with this bug - ruclips.net/video/tPRKLssSdpg/видео.html In short, instead of saving files directly, you need to “open in” and then choose “save to files” and you will get working audio files. 👍
hello there, no one working with amazondrive instead of googledrive, dropbox, icloud?... on my files and garageband i can see my amazondrive & dropbox, but impossible to move from iphone to dropbox nor amazondrive any ideas? thx fo4r sharing or for some feedback
Hey there. I must admit that I find it more reliable to use the native app when transferring files. The “Files” app integration doesn’t always work the best. ruclips.net/video/qMjd6ziU4aY/видео.html
We used to be able to drag a song file over another to make a folder. This used to help keep the browse screen so much tidier. Why did they get rid of this functionality. Or am I missing something?...
Yeah. Check out the method o show to add a new folder. You basically just need to swipe down on any screen and you’ll get access to some hidden options to create a new folder and sort your files.
Hello mate, l have a question : me & my mate both have GarageBand on our iPad and we're starting a project together, problem is that we live far away from each other and we need to exchange our GarageBand projects one way or another so each of us can add/change bits. What app would you recommend using for that purpose ? It's a bit tricky as GarageBand only accepts projects to be sent via Message (which in that case is ZIP & still haven't found a way to unzip it), would Dropbox do the job ?
