  • Join us as we visit Bobbejaanland located in Belgium for our first ever visit. The park was founded by Bobbejaan Schoepen, a Flemish singer, guitarist, and entertainer who enjoyed international popularity in the fifties and early sixties. Over the years the park has expanded and as of 2017 features 7 roller coasters along with many other attractions in a beautiful lakeside setting.
In this vlog we share our reviews from all of the major rides at the park along with sharing both on and off ride footage from the wide variety of attractions. We also explore the different sections of the park and discover something rather incredible over at the rapids ride!
This visit to Bobbejaanland was part of our September 2017 Europe Road Trip where we visited 6 different theme parks! Further videos from the trip will be added to our dedicated playlist very soon! Playlist: • Europe Road Trip Septe...

I absolutely ADORED this park when I was little. I'm from the Netherlands, but this is the park closest to me. This park had everything: rollercoasters, lots of flatrides, shows and some great water rides. Bobbejaan used to drive around the park in a huge American car with bullhorns on the hood, handing out signatures. It was like meeting Walt Disney at Disneyland. But when the Schoepen family sold it, things went downhill very quickly. Bad maintenance and they removed more rides than they built, and the newer rides were mostly dissapointing. But the thing I miss the most is the country and western feeling. They killed the parks soul when they quit the theatre shows and the horse show and got rid of some of the western theming, like the train ride and the Mississippi boat. I do not hate the park, like many people do nowadays. But when I visit it now, it looks like a shadow of it's former self. Like Martin said, the heydays of this park were 20 years ago.

I agree, the best days of this park are over. That really is a shame, because it is this park that put Belgium on the map in the world of theme-parks. It was a really special and unique park. Now, for me, it seems like the owners just want to get as many possible money out of this park and then close it.

El Rio's big wheel has been in operation for only a few years, mainly because it had an extremely low capacity and the ride was more popular than anticipated by the park.
This, combined with the fact that the wheel was really hard to evacuate has led to it being taken out of use.
It will probably be there until the ride gets closed.
I have actually ridden it a few times with the wheel in operation and it did add quite a lot to the experience, without it it is really one of the worst rapids around because nothing special is in there.
Another ride of importance is Revolution, which is unique in the entire world, it's the only remaining Vekoma Illusion around. It used to have a screen in the bottom as well, but the projector in the top always broke because of vibrations in the building.
They decided to add the crater and remove the screen.
El Paso was actually one of the first interactive darkrides and had those elements built in from the start.
The wind turbine was removed a few months ago, unfortunately. It was located directly next to Typhoon.
The reason for the waiting for a ride for Sledgehammer has to do with electricity costs: it's an expensive ride to operate and when it's calm they try to get fewer rides this way. Not really a fan of that system, but I went about 8 times this year and never saw them using the board/system. It's only for really calm days.
Nocturne means that the park is open until 21h.
If you want to go again, I'm always available as a guide. I know the park in and out (and the history of it as well) and live very close to it.

Same!

To remark on the similarity between the Lost Temple at Movie Park and the Forbidden Caves at Bobbejaanland: Both parks are operated by the same group Parques Reunidos from Spain. The fact that they gave both parks a version only 1 year apart from each other made it a cheap investment for both parks (as a result of a combination purchase).

Visiting Bobbejaanland as a Kid was just as fun as Efteling and the theming you still see is wats left of those times. Bobbejaan Schoepen put his heart and soul in this park back in the day. Sadly Bobbejaanland got old and sold and never got the investments it deserved. Thats why now it looks a bit decrepit and they only add cheap rides with minimal theming. I see that for new visitors its still an ok park, but for peeps visiting 15 years ago its pretty painfull that its not the park it used to be,....

I really enjoy your vlogs! Revolution is one of my all time favorite coaster, but it saldly seems like the screen wasn't working when you rode it, when the screen works, the expirience is even better! Bobbejaanland was way better before, when it had the double wild mouse, the suspended coaster with airplanes, el rio with the drop,... I miss the old days of Bobbejaanland. Overal it is was great vlog even if it was raining like all day long 😂

Hi Theme Park Worldwide! I liked your vlog about my place where I work. I can tell you some fun facts about some rides. First of all I hear you saying in The Revolution that it has a huge train... Well I'm going to pronounce it like you would say it: Its not the longest Rollercoaster train in Belgium, not in Europe, BUT IN THE WORLD! The train has 30 seats and is 56m long. The ferris wheel of El Rio was operating between 2000 and 2003 it has been closed down because its broken and it was a hell to evacuate. The mirrored left side of Speedy Bob is now standing in Parques de atracciones Madrid and its now called Vertigo. The Railroad Station is just a themed building the train that is next to Speedy Bob was used for a darkride called The Time Tunnel that operated between 1976 and it broke in 2000 and it never re-opened again. The railroad that you saw in front of the Indiana River is from that ride. The King Kong is from HUSS attractions and the Gorilla is from theming company Heimo. The giant windturbine is also gone from this season. The contract with the energy company ended and the park and the company decided to remove the windturbine. But it has a second life in Ukraine. I also like your meanings about the park. It needs to be cleaned up in some area's, but Parques Reunidos (The company that owns the park) doesn't give much money to do those things... I hope you guys had a nice day at Bobbejaanland and I hope to see you guys soon! (With Halloween?) Greetings from the Moonwalking operator of King Kong.

Its an amazing park if it gets TLC im hoping the Multi Launch coaster brings some like back.Parque Reunidos just baught Belantis when they cant even take care of some of the parks.I hope that accident just says that we need to renovate and start taking care of our rides and poor sections of the park.I hope after the Multi Launch they get a kids or family coaster and kids land. Also do something with that drop even if its an elevator lift or something it needs something.

I loved your review of Bobbejaanland. Cause I think everyone in Belgium has visited this park as they were a kid. It used to be one of the better parks but as you found out is not "renewing" and all the rides are standing there for already a looong time. And they are not adding any good coasters or thrill rides since years. Witch is a shame, this park certainly needs some good new rides or tlc to put themselves back on the map in Belgium. As Kevin Petit already mentioned some correct facts about the ferris wheel and the electricity costs of the sledge hammer. I want to add some few more things. The park used to have so many iconic rides like at the entrance there was the Santa Maria. It was the only shwarzkopf "pirate ship" in the world. But instead of a overhead structure it was a coaster rail ship. More kind of like RC racer at studios but with some real good forces on it! They also used to have a Huss troika, break dancer (which is back on the fair travelling),condor but they are all removed (shame). And the most iconic roller coaster is of course the vekoma "illusion". The only one left in the world now so it has (regained) actually the world record of longest train at the moment. But imagine riding this thing with the same lighting and screen projectors (bottom and top) in the early 90's, this was then some state of the art. I can tell you that, there was no coaster in the world like this back then. And some detail about the eurofighter. The place where the looping of the roller coaster is located is no coincidence. On the same spot that the Eurofighter is standing now. There was an iconic shwarzkopf looping star. And because this roller coaster was so iconic to the park(it was some of the first ones ever build) when they scrapped it some years ago they decided to put the loop of the gerstlauer on exact the same spot to honor it ☺ .. I follow your channel quit a long time now, this is the first time I comment because for many Belgian viewers I think Bobbejaanland is somewhat child memory, more then walibi or bellewaerde or... It was such a great park back then when Bobbejaan himself drove everyday through the park in his Big American western themed limo saying hello to the crowd in the park. It's a shame the family sold it. Because sinds then the park is not the same anymore. Anyway keep up the good vlogs and keep on Que'ing those credits ☺

Ah...Clarence Pier, in Southsea (a small park on the UK’s south coast) also, for a short time, had a pirate ship on rails that matches your description above. I wonder if they obtained it from Bobbejaanland? I don’t recall ever noticing who built it, but I’d never seen one before..nor since. I don’t recall if I ever actually took a ride on it. Possibly not, as it didn’t look as fun as a proper swinging boat. I suspect there must be someone out there that would know whether it was the same ride. That’s going back a lot of years, though!

    • @MrRoeler
      @MrRoeler 7 лет назад +1

After doing some research there do were some other shwarzkopf ships 😊 but they were build for fair travelling. So it is possible that of course one of the ships ended in a theme park. I preferred this ship above a conventional ship, the ride experience is just simply better ☺

    • @GbHandlebar
      @GbHandlebar 7 лет назад

Thanks, Roelert. Although Clarence Pier is a static park, many of its rides, over the years, were originally built for travelling. So, yes, that could be the case.

It's amazing to see your vlog about this park, because it was the ONLY park I ever went to as a kid. I can compare with how it used to be, it really starts to look like one of those rusty asian theme parks, LOL. In recent years, I've been to all the other modern parks and I have kind of forgotten about this park, where I had all my 1st's. Nice to see how it is nowadays. It shows that since the Bobbejaan family sold the park, it has been solely used as a cash cow by the new owners. What a shame.

This park reminds me of Chessington and parts of Alton Towers with a splash of AA or Camalot. You can see the traces of a much grander time when park was incredible. Now the once world class attractions are just average and theming struggling to stay fresh and whatever magic the park had is gone, shame. Not to mention the decaying but lovely landscaping.

Another great vlog and I'm happy that u enjoyed your day in Bobbejaanland.
I am very sure that staff will also be very happy too see this vlog.
Now a couple facts about the park and I can give u answers for some questions u asked.
first the rad of the El Rio.
Most of the people will say it was shut down thanks too low capacity and if U search the web also one of the reasons many sites say.
    That is not true.
If the rad was fully operating without technical issues the capacity was the same as today.
But most of the time it had technical issues and thanks of that low capacity.
Second reason was indeed evacuation difficulty.
The reason it is still standing today is very easy.
It costs too much money to remove it.
I also know from the former operation manager that Hafema searched also for a solution too get the drop working again but a lift like on River Quest couldn't fit into the zone.
The former double Mack Wild Mouse.
Why was their a double one.
    Easy and funny answer.
The family Schoepen and Mack where very close too each other.
So close that when Mack invented something and it didn't fit into Europapark most of the time they sold it very cheap to Bobbejaanland.
Another one is the El Passo Special.
Mack had already build the track system many times in many parks but wanted too make a interactive ride and Bobbejaanland wanted a new ride.
So from the beginning El Passo Special was interactive but they changed the shooting system a couple years ago.
First it was shooting without scores and just for activating the animatronics.
    And at last the train.
Their was a train ride inside the park for many years.
It was a transport ride but also a darkride.
It could transport u from the part of the park where Indiana River too the Wild West part.
Now they changed the course a couple time and when Kinderland was build it was no longer a transport ride.
At that time it was just a train around the building of Indiana River. Behind the building their was a tunnel where the darkride section was. Fun fact the tunnel is on this day still intact and even the animatronics are still their.
WARNING FOR EVERYONE READING THIS POST!
DO NOT TRY TO ENTER THAT TUNNEL IT IS VERY DANGEROUS INSIDE.
The train did no longer run after 2000 because it was too dangerous when people could cross the track all the time.

I'm not a big fan of VR either - partly because my eyesight is terrible, and partly because I'd rather experience a rollercoaster as a rollercoaster. It works on Derren Brown's Ghost Train but otherwise, nah.

I am from Belgium and Bobbejaanland (bbj) is like Alton Towers for you Shaun. Ok the coasters arent great and stand out in bbj but to me i have a special feeling when i am there ive been to Portaventure and Thorpe park last year and the coasters and atractions are way better i know but they dont have that special feeling to me lke bbj i hope you will come back to bbj !! Its not a theme park i think its more of a family park and i swear the park is 10 times more enjoyable with good wether the rain makes the park boring i can tell ive been in bbj like 20 times btw the big windmill was removed this year because the contract was ended and was to power typhoon. Ow yeah you forgot to go in Kinderland (childrens area) the big hanger next to dreamcatcher its pretty in there it really is and when you walk past Dizz on the left is a sitting area you can still see the turn into the station from the big waterslide that was once there and also the cool thing with speedy bob was that you can choose which side you wanted to ride it was pretty cool (nobody pikt the left side i dont know why?)
One last thing there was a big looping attraction behind slatshhammer that was removed in a think 2012

i like the fact you managed to film more on the rides. One thought for you though - POV's on rides...all very well...but sooo many out there..nice that you incorporated a fair few shots of your guys on the ride and not just POV shot. MORE of this angle...not meaning to 'dab' or ham it up...but its a better shot for the viewers i think..mix it up with POV.

I wish Bobbejaan Schoepen still operated the park, I feel like when Parques Reudinos took over it went downhill and kinda lost its glory. Not that I know because I have never been there when Bobbejaan still owned it. Also, did you know that at first, they wanted to built a Vekoma Flying Dutchman instead of Typhoon?

The Ferris wheel on the rapid river has been taken out of the ride because of its low capacity and high operation costs. For every boat dropped the wheel had to by perfectly turn, and a water basin, at the top, had to be pumped full whit water. I have also seen somewhere that only half the boats got to experience this drop when it was busy in the park, but I don't know if this is true. As for the windmill of the park, the turbine wasn’t actually of the park. eventually the contract whit the energy supplier expired and so the turbine was removed earlier this year (July 2017).
