Are they just painted black and edged with a silver in a chipping/scratching method? They look fantastic and if that is the case I have been severely over thinking it for my black armor😂😂. First tow battle report i finished watching, great display pleasure to watch, thank you. As an old dwarf player was interesting to see some of the new rules
As a Warhammer Fan for 25 years i really like this Battle Report and the Armies. Dwarfs were my first Army. Packing a lot of Points in a big Elite Regiment + King+ other Chars is always tempting but they have to get a chance to fight a decisive fight. Especially for Dwarfs the Deplomyent Phase before there Start of the Battle is absolute crucial because you have very little or no chance at all to correct a deployment mistake. The Kings Place is not to hold the flank but in the Center in opposition to the most important enemy units. But that is Classic Warhammer
My heart is always with the dwarfs they were my first army 30 odd years ago. They always seemed to disappoint me. Apart from gunline they were not great. Now i feel with the way war machines have been dimmed down and the dwarfs are just too slow it will be more pain for me. If the new book gives us back slayer armies led by Ungrim Ill go that way. Great report! My fave channel for battle reports, now covering my two systems, TOW and 30k. Keep up the good work. This sort of content is why I am a member!
Sure you didn't do the cannon firing wrong? Don't have TOW rules, but in WFB you: 1. Picked a point within range. 2. Rolled Artillery dice for extra random flight distance - misfire here means something went wrong with the cannon. 3. Rolled Artillery dice for bounce distance - misfire here means ball stuck in the ground with no bounce. Seems you skipped the second part?
If you skip part 2, there's no reason to not just place the marker right infront of the target - unless you have friendly units directly behind the target of course.
I think it's just the wording when DC said it goes straight through. What actually happened was he picked a point and rolled the artillery dice. That added 10 inches which landed on the back of my stone thrower so it was hit. We just didn't roll to see how far it rolled through after because there were no more models behind it so it didn't matter.
@@Chris_da_Waaagh oh yeah no criticism here. Just reminding you in case you didn't remember yourself. Everyone is still learning the new rules and playing a "new" army is always challenging :)
@@nobonobnob5174 100% mate. It's a really great game too. Hope you're enjoying all the hype surrounding it. Appreciate the comment for sure, helps us all learn :)
Thank you for remembering Ancient Grudges/hatred. I've watched a bunch of battle reports where they completely forget, and a Dwarf Lord whiffs all his attacks. Throws the game results. (Oops, you forgot slayer deathblows.) Always aim ten inches from the rear of your target, unless your instincts tell you otherwise. Still, I like the semi-guess range skills showing through on the cannon. I was really good back in 6th Edition. People accused me of cheating, or pre-measuring. Truth is, I just drilled. Formed a practice gunline, and marched troops at it. I still miss 8th Edition, despite the horrible magic abuse.
Loving the fantasy battles! Yall seem to be the only ones atm not doing either empire or brettonia and Tomb kings. It's a real draw. Also fantastic looking armies on both sides Well done to you both!
I think one issue the dwarves had was not using that cannon blast the big blocks of orcs. Great quality content I'm probably just grumbling cause I'm collecting Dwarves.
To fair cannons, organ guns ect needed toning down. Bigger monesters were unplayable. As a dwarf player myself it'd be nice not to be the most hated faction.
Nah, they don't explode. You will only get the points for the battle standard banner if he's dead, fleeing at the end of the game or flees off the table. That's the only way you can claim 50pts of trophies of war from them.
@@Chris_da_Waaaghit’s possibly something I saw in a reaction video so maybe they were wrong. The other thing I wondered about but might be wrong on is step up. In one of the almanac pieces they said, “Casualties are removed from the back ranks, representing the rear ranks stepping forward as their comrades bite the dirt.”, I was interpreting that as meaning you still fought with a complete front rank if you want second, like in later editions, but I see you are doing it the old way, that’s definitely how they are doing it then? It’s hard enough learning the rules in isolation but even worse when you start getting confused with several other editions you used to play. I wish I was still 13 s as me could just read it and remember it!
@@Captain_of_Nuln yeah it can be confusing. Hopefully this helps: models are removed from the back rank for ease. 5 orcs charge 10 dwarves (2 ranks of 5 wide). Orcs kill 2 dwarves. Now only 3 dwarves get to fight back. The 2 dwarves killed are removed from the bank rank for ease. This represents 2 models behind the "killed ones in the front rank" stepping forward into the fighting rank. Any model that steps forward into the fighting rank like this cannot attack. However if a unit is armed with spears and provides a supporting attack, then if that spearman steps up from a 3rd rank into a 2nd rank, it will get to provide a supporting attack. Hopefully that makes sense mate?
@@Chris_da_Waaagh yes, definitely, thanks! If i was them I would not have highlighted removing from the back rank in the article on that basis. Armour seems a lot more important at low initiative now after playing WAP for the last few years!
@@Captain_of_Nuln yeah armour is big now. A 3+ or 4+ armour save on infantry is extremely strong. Getting into the weeds of the game now and navigating some of the nuances etc, I genuinely think this is the best edition of fantasy. And I love 6th edition.
So glad WFB is back. The lore is top notch. The armies full of characterful minis. And it is fundamentally a different tactical challenge from 40K and Sigmar. Yeah sure it's a bit more complex and clunky that the new rules systems but it's worth the effort. Hopefully it is well supported and we see it continue for a long time.
Love this matchup, classic rivalry! The Dawi were my original army and my favourite, love to see this! Please do another game, would love to see some of the other unit choices for the Dawi if you have access to any hammerers and/or ironbreakers
Yeah a fall back in good order is effectively a flee with an automatic and immediate rally and a free reform at the end. If the attacker pursues and catches the unit, then they could as charging in the next round of combat and all bonuses apply
Good Video. I have a question. We Know that a Unit can adopt only Formation in his Special Rule. Now. We Know that a Close Order Formation is composed of 2 or MORE model in Ranks and Files. Well. Dragon Ogre can only adopt Close Order, but if i want i can also purchase just one 1 Dragon Ogre. So what Formation will the Dragon Ogre have? I Remember that He is not a Heavy Chariot, he is not a Monster, he is not a Character...
@@sn_dc Mh. In what sense? Let me explain again. A unit can only be deployed on the field based on one of the formations that are listed among its special rules (Close Order, Open Order, Skirmish). Open Order and Close Order require 2+ Models in Ranks and Files. Heavy Cariot, Monstrous Creature and Behemot have a rule that says that even if they are single models they can be deployed in Close Order. Single Characters, who do not belong to the above categories, are considered Skirmish, if not combined with a unit. Now...A unit of 1 Dragon Ogre, which is Monstrous Cavalry, and which has Close Order as its only Formartion, how is it deployed on the Field? How does he fight, how does he align himself with charges, how does he interact with scenic elements, etc?
lol, bolt throwers have AP-3 and cannons have AP-2? I'm finding shooting is underwhelming except for the odd war machine. You spend all those points to get rid of maybe 10 models just to have 5 savage orcs run through the squishy firing line. 50pts of dudes rips through almost 400 points. Another large unit of warriors for the organ gun, thunderers and quarrellers you probably would have held the line. Warriors traded very well with the Black orcs. The slayers too. Maybe if you concentrated fire from the beginning but still that's dedicating 400 points to destroy like 100 and they're next to useless the back half of the game when everything is locked in a fight. A solid block of infantry would have blunted the savage orcs and saved you from getting flanked. The dwarf line would have held out all game and that would give time for the other unit of warriors to get stuck in. I think just the way Warhammer plays out, ranged units are hardly worth taking in large numbers because you can't really maximize effectiveness without a large frontage. Back ranks serve as nothing but a buffer for casualties. You need elevation to put your ranged behind the front rank, but then what do you shoot at once everything is engaged? I think the ranged damage incentive from rank and file is a trap, only real useful for picking off small specialist/elite units which die just as easy as the rest. Even then, given how sturdy good line infantry is proving to be in this new version with the fall back changes, just go with some solid infantry. The battlefield dimensions are of little help being wide and shallow. It incentivizes placement of ranged units up front where there is little to chance they'll cause enough damage to impact the front line. Probably want to avoid overinvesting in shooting as it has little value in battlefield control. Everything I'm seeing now favors the big infantry blocks that don't get overrun so easily anymore. You actually get the benefit of paying for every model in an the block. Basic chaff infantry are blunting cavalry charges supported by characters. This overrun meta from previous editions is over. The line will hold for several turns of combat until you actually kill the majority of the unit or just get lucky, but that's not very reliable. That used to be the meat an potatoes of the game as well as the easiest way to rack up points. In this version I think ranged units should be taken sparingly and the emphasis on place on the battle line. Try taking ranged in many small units, like instead of 15 go three units of 5 each with a champion and squeezed in gaps or on flanks. If someone comes after them they are choked off or left out of position. Probably easier to maneuver/position. You can still concentrate fire and if one gets destroyed or locked in combat you don't have a whole load of ranged units tied up in combat. You want something for those points to do other than the first 2 turns. TLDR: I think the sturdiness of rank infantry now diminishes the impact of ranged firepower as anything other than a supplemental and specialized role.
War machine aren't that great but dwarfs quarrellers are only 1 point more then warriors but they have 1 less weapons skill and no shield wall. So their not to bad if their ranked up.
@grlmgor That WS makes a difference. But either way, are you going to rank them up? Probably not, they still gonna cause more damage on a stand and shoot than a melee brawl. If you are paying for a large ranged unit it doesn't make sense to sacrifice a turn of shooting to reform. I can see the rules still support the second rank of fire from elevated position, so ranged units on a hill I think can justify the cost of more models. Otherwise, for the cost I think a war machine is much better with the smaller footprint and it's damage output doesn't diminish as it can't lose models while it dies. The war machines work better IMO.
Thanks! We will get more complex as the games go on, this was Chris’s first game of OW so didn’t want to increase the difficulty level! I’m still learning too!
Thoroughly enjoyed this clash, bloody well done! Out of interest where did you get the ruins? They'd be perfect for the Frostgrave board I'm working on.
Proceeds to call a Runesmith a Wizard... **Opens the BIG book and picks up a quill whilst scowling and mumbling something about Valaya** - Great battle report - lovely to see the return of the Old World, great to see Dwarf V Orc too... the old grudgefest is back! Glorious slayer death too... Grimnir would approve.
You can now do indirect fire. So if you cannot draw a line of sight to the target unit (which I couldn't because my orc unit was in the way) then you will always scatter. If you roll a hit you use the arrow on the hit icon and scatter the artillery dice minus your BS number of inches.
So, I believe you misunderstood how the cannons work. the first roll determines if the cannon misfires or not, but also how far the cannonball lands from the first point. The second roll then determines how far the cannon ball bounces from THAT point.
Hey mate this is in other comments too. We played it correctly, it just wasn't explained right. The 10 inches rolled on the artillery dice was added to the spot and it hit the back of my rock lobber. We just didn't roll again after that to see how far it rolled through because I didn't have another unit behind so it didn't matter. Subsequent turns are explained and shown better. Hope you enjoyed the game 😊
Drift/overshoot then bounce. Think master engineers and other engineer type characters used to be able to reduce /reroll those artillery dice to make cannons more effective
Finally got round to finishing this batrep, frustrating that the block of GW warriors with the T10 king did nothing as that would’ve been interesting to see
Need to wait until Saturday obviously to get the book infront of me, but every other time I've seen a cannon used in a ToW batrep it still does the double bounce (ie, place your marker then roll to see what extra distance you get THEN bounce - basically just missing out the guess range step from 7th and earlier). Reading the 8th book (an edition I never played to be fair) it seems it works exactly the same as that edition?
It does mate. This is in another comment. We done it right, it just wasn't explained right. The 10 was added to his position and it hit the rock lobber but we didn't roll against cause nothing was behind it. The rest of the shots are played out better for the camera. Hope you like the video and feel immersed 😊
@sn_dc oh deffo just the o&g army of my dreams from before the end times won't happen. However I see chariots can have frenzy and warpaint so won't need to do just looks like a savage orc chariot and can actually have one
@@chrisbaker91sadly because of the army entries etc, you can only have 0-1 unit of frenzied orc boys per 1000 points which is disappointing. Meaning at 2k points you cannot run more than 2 units of savage orc boys. However, although having no proof of this, I genuinely believe when the orc and goblin tribes arcane journal comes out, there will likely be a savage orc army list under the armies of infamy. Also, you can just play friendly games the way you want with friends. Ignore the 0-1 rule. Cause rule of cool should always win out
Ooooh, kept forgetting the deathblows for the Slayers! I wonder if that would have changed much for the big grundy combat? EDIT: It just got noticed at the end lol. Lots of new rules to remember eh

Excellent bat rep! Starting my OandG army as soon as I can get my hands on some models. I have to ask though…. The black orcs. Are they just painted black and edged with a silver in a chipping/scratching method? They look fantastic and if that is the case I have been severely over thinking it for my black armor😂😂. Would love to know thanks again!
Will try get the painter to answer ♥️
Hey mate, I can confirm, the black orcs are primed with chaos black spray and then rough, chipping-like edge highlighted with iron hands steel. That's it. Simple. When I started I had been doing washes and all sorts and it just took too long. So I tried to simplify it without losing too much quality
@@Chris_da_Waaagh have a squad of black orcs I’m looking to build next, absolutely will be taking this approach. Looks so similar to how I was painting black armor but with 3 less steps haha! Thank you again they look fantastic.

Love the proxies used. Great fight
Thanks! Yer Chris has come great ideas on other model options for units 😊
First tow battle report i finished watching, great display pleasure to watch, thank you. As an old dwarf player was interesting to see some of the new rules
Thanks buddy
That’s awesome to hear!! ❤
Thanks buddy and agreed on the king always holding the centre line
My heart is always with the dwarfs they were my first army 30 odd years ago. They always seemed to disappoint me. Apart from gunline they were not great. Now i feel with the way war machines have been dimmed down and the dwarfs are just too slow it will be more pain for me. If the new book gives us back slayer armies led by Ungrim Ill go that way.
Great report! My fave channel for battle reports, now covering my two systems, TOW and 30k. Keep up the good work. This sort of content is why I am a member!

Dwarf cannons were d3 in 6th and 7th, 8th bumped them up to d6 for some reason. 4th/5th they were d4 damage, interestingly enough.
Great battle report and both armies look awesome!
Thanks Buddy
Thanks a lot! Appreciate the kind words ❤
nice fight guys, looking forward to getting some games in with you both
You based in Gib?
I always ran the Rune of Adamant. Toughness 10 is amazing.
DC should have bought him the rune of longer legs am I right?! 😂😂
Oh man I positioned them wrong, in my defence you swung to the other flank!
Sure you didn't do the cannon firing wrong? Don't have TOW rules, but in WFB you:
Just watching through but we played it as you say... Lemme check it as I watch through :)
Yea. Pretty sure that's not how cannons work
@@Chris_da_Waaagh 21:50 Here you seem to just pick a point and go straight to the bounce.
Great Batrep. You forgot deathblow on the slayers ;) and leadership tests to restrain from the follow-up/pursue.
Yeah we remember at the end. This videoing games is actually harder than it looks lol. Especially after a day at work. But yes you are correct 😊
@@Chris_da_Waaagh oh yeah no criticism here. Just reminding you in case you didn't remember yourself. Everyone is still learning the new rules and playing a "new" army is always challenging :)

Beautiful armies! Those Black Orcs are especially gorgeous.
Thanks
Thank you for remembering Ancient Grudges/hatred. I've watched a bunch of battle reports where they completely forget, and a Dwarf Lord whiffs all his attacks. Throws the game results. (Oops, you forgot slayer deathblows.)
Always aim ten inches from the rear of your target, unless your instincts tell you otherwise.
Also fantastic looking armies on both sides

To fair cannons, organ guns ect needed toning down. Bigger monesters were unplayable. As a dwarf player myself it'd be nice not to be the most hated faction.
1:56:23 do BSBs explode when they flee or is that just unit standard bearers? And maybe not in this edition 🤷♂️
Nah, they don't explode. You will only get the points for the battle standard banner if he's dead, fleeing at the end of the game or flees off the table. That's the only way you can claim 50pts of trophies of war from them.
I think Quarrelers should be able to stand and shoot the Savage Orcs. They didn't seem to be too close.
Nevermind, you did it in the combat phase...
Excellent to see the old world finally here. Been about since 5th Ed.
Same!! My first box was Brets vs Lizardmen ❤ next up we’re recording Chaos Warriors 💪
Someone may have said this, but I think I remember reading that missile units all have to pick targets before any of them are resolved?
I'll have a read up and check later but I think that's an incorrect interpretation of the phase and sub-phase order but yeah I'll double check. :)
I want to find somebody to play with the Warhammer Magic rules from 5th Edition. The magic phase is basically a card game in between turns.

Where Re the charge tokens from out of curiosity
Those are mine from a long time ago! I think the company was Gale Force 9 ? But I could be mistaken 😅
Quick question when you fall back orderly are you not able to at some point adjust the facing of your unit?
I’d have to check that one but if they’re monsterous infantry you’d
Need 3 in another rank for a rank bonus
@@ivanp8 I’m with you now and I think it needs an FAQ you’re right it’s odd!
I dig how the dwarf player has a beard and the orc player is wearing green :D
Totally intentional lmao
😂
lol, bolt throwers have AP-3 and cannons have AP-2?
Does anyone know what the game mat is? It looks sharp.
I believe it’s P Works!
Nice BR! The only thing I'd say you need more scenic elements to make battles a bit more challengening in the center

@@sn_dc I cant wait to see chaos warriors! for the dark gods!
Was that not a direct hit with rock lobber on turn one? Or do stone throwers always scatter now and you just follow the arrow on the direct hit face?
What Chris said 👆🏼also Chris you’re up early! 😂
Drift/overshoot then bounce. Think master engineers and other engineer type characters used to be able to reduce /reroll those artillery dice to make cannons more effective

Yer Chris’s army is so nice we considered locking it in the studio and keeping it haha
