I live in the hot, humid south near Savannah, GA, USA . Recently, received 60 bites to forearms as sleeves were rolled up. I tried EVERYTHING to stop the intense itching, couldn't sleep.....nothing worked to include benedryl, calomine, baking soda and water paste, cold compresses, hydrocortizone, special no itch soap they use on horses containing tea tree oil, ocean sulfur. Going nuts with the itching. Went to doctor after a week of agony, prescribed prednisone steroid pills and topical steroid cream. Within 24 hours, itching pretty much stopped. No see ums rip a hole in your skin with their jaws, suck blood, and leave saliva all over the bite.

Sorry but none of this helped at all. I have them in the house from a houseplant that I brought in. They are too smart and won't go for vinegar or co2 trap. 😭

This is why I am so scared to bring in any flowers or plants into my room yeah that scares me even thought of growing them with the little pot things like free made but still that scares me so I just use fake flowers now that's so beautiful you can't tell and I feel safer, still however the knowledge of knowing that I grew something with my own hands would be awesome though

Yep I totally understand. I will never bring another houseplant into my house ever again. It is just been insane living with these damn things. I have found out several things. Put your soil in the sun for 3 weeks before you use it and it kills all eggs. It has to be hot weather to work. Vinegar kills them so they won't go near it. They will go for bright white light and they will swarm it so it is one way to trap them. The light used in the CO2 trap is not white enough and they won't go for it. I have had success putting bowls of water and bleach out where their nests are. They jump in the bowls or use it for eggs and they die. If you have them in your house start putting everything in sealed bags because they will be in everything. They were in the shoes, clothes, bedding. Get your clothes and soak them in soapy water and then wash them otherwise they don't die in the normal wash unless it is 90 degrees Celsius. You have to trap them and trick them. I would start by washing your floors with diluted bleach because that kills them. Then put some kind of pesticide under your carpets and your mats. I used a Bifurethrin formula. It doesn't kill them straight away but it attracts them and they will go under the carpet and die in it eventually. If you have a robot vacuum, spray some in there and they will die in there. They will try to infest everything and use it for a nest. You are the trap because they will come for you. I finally understood what was happening when i found the little black spots on my feet and started washing them off. After that the biting would stop. They are hitchhikers. They will get on you and use you as a nest and bite you. You have to become the predator to get rid of them. Eventually you will be able to see where they are by the debris they leave behind. Look on your sheets. They look like tiny black grains which are solid and sometimes will jump. They look like fungus gnats. If you have the money get your house fumigated and close all the sinks and bathroom drains. They will escape through these openings if you don't close them off. You are going to have to go through all your belongings and get rid of their nests. They will bite you everytime. I used to get through it by washing them off my feet and putting a candle out. They will go for the candle and die in the wax and the light. The other thing which will help is to block up your weep holes in your screens. Pesticide your bottom part of your screens for both windows and doors. Pesticide under your dishwasher. The most important thing you can do is to clean out the driptray at the back of the fridge because they will be breeding in there. Use your bed as a trap and put an automatic pyrethrum sprayer over it and that will kill the flying ones which are the worst because they won't leave you alone and tend to annoy you at night when you are trying to sleep. You are going to have to clean out your fridge especially the seals on the side of the fridge. If you find crumbs that is their nest. Look for the insects and the debris in the spot and you will begin to understand what they look like. You might find a cupboard full of dead insects or flies. That is their nest. They kill the other insects and in my experience the spiders as well. They will be biting you so you will know whether you have found it or not. They don't need water to lay their eggs. They use metal and glue and plastic for their eggs. Look at the brackets in your kitchen cupboards and you will find brown eggs on them. Spray or clean the brackets. They will be on your pet. Clean the pet's bedding regularly. Look for the little black grains on the bed. Brush your pet regularly. They will be in pillows with holes in them. It is a hellish process cleaning them out of your house but it does get better after you have done it. They will always come back to the same nest until you eradicate the nest. Be prepared for nobody to believe you. I have tried talking to an entomologist. I have tried to get photos. You need to get a special lens for your phone so you can see them and take photos and even then it is hard. They are just so tiny. These are not normal insects as you have probably worked out by now. They are super smart and they hide and then come back. Yes you can infect the friends that you visit. They will happily come over to a friend's house on your shoes and will stay on those shoes but if you try to get them off and spray them then they go and create a new colony at your friend's house. So just be aware of it. Their nests will also be outside but they will be around the entrance ways to your house. They will be on your patio. They will be in your plants. I am still trying to eradicate them. Yes they will put eggs and larvae in your bed and on you so that is why you need to use pyrethrum sprayers on your bed. Kill the flying ones and all that will stop. Don't freak out it won't hurt you but it is not good. I feel for anyone who has these things in their life. I have got rid of most of them. I just have ten percent on them coming in now so now I am targeting the ones outside. My latest attempt is to spray what they are eating and kill them that way. I use Raid one shot crawling insects surface spray to spray them. So i look for grubs on the patio and there they are...these little black things around them and I spray them. You might see the flying midges in that area and the adult midge. I am also going to put mosquito bits in the plants and maybe that will kill them, I just don't know. I am so over them. You have to clean out all the grime in your kitchen areas and all over the house because they use it as a nest. They are in the dust in your house. They love dust. I have tried to share everything with you that has helped me and all my observations. I hope this helps. No you are not crazy, your house is just under siege by miniature serial killers.

I'm having this same problem. Vinegar isn't working. I don't know if they are no see ums in my house though. They certainly will crawl or land on me, but they don't bite, at least not that I can feel or not that shows up on my skin. They're also invisible while in motion. Sometimes I'll smush one that's landed on me and I'll have to hold my finger very close to my eye to be able to see the dead bug. Does anyone else, especially in southern california, have this problem?
