The metal and rock journalism field is CRAMMED to the rafters with people like Finn. They hate the music, they hate the fans, and they mock any passionate defense of your hobbies.
Finn McKenty, the marketing guy, getting stuck making youtube videos about System of a Down because he was so bad at marketing the content he cared about, is such an own-goal.
Objectively dumb take lol. "The marketing guy" identified an underrepresented niche, sold millions of people a false version of himself based on projections about the market potential of serving that niche, and made enough money doing it to retire. Pretty fucking nice job marketing himself.
@vevvenennevvev5945 not particularly. Dude looks absolutely miserable, probably because he's spent more than a half decade getting yelled at by other miserable people that he made miserable. He's not a marketing genius, he got addicted to the easy cashflow of nostalgia. That isn't marketing, it's social engineering. Nostalgia isnt an underserved demographic, it's a marketing "easy" button. Now he's trying to pivot to SaaS and consulting, but he's stopped content creation? Probably because he doesn't actually know shit about that market - genuine tech industry explainer videos do tend to hundreds more views than Finn's braindead "Why 311 lyrics are actually deeper than you think" slurry, but the issue is that Finn would have to actually know specific things about OpenStack or Kubernetes rather than getting to upload 17 minute droneathons and getting people's misremembered impression of the 1990s and quickness to anger to do the work of actually making and selling a product worth your dollars or attention.
I was talking about Finn with a friend of mine and I said, "His videos sound like he's just reading from a Wikipedia article". I was making a joke to try to insult him, but little did I know I was actually right.
he openly spoke about that to be fair and he said, that was what people wanted to see and what got views. He had a second channel, where he openly spoke about all this and talked shit. This is no news.
"everyone says this band sucks, they have no talent, and they don't deserve any recognition. But not me, I'm more mature and can see why this band in fact does not suck as much as everybody else says." -Every single video by Finn McGrifter edit- your head is not big and dumb.
Honestly, I don't feel like what he is saying about only doing it for the money, is actually genuine. I think something has happened behind the scenes and the guy is angry, lashing out and he's alienating his entire audience. If you do decide to do something else, you don't burn every single bridge you've built, not unless something serious has happened. I'm interested to see what is being said in a year from now.
I think you're correct. I think this is a result of some severe depression or something. There's no reason for him to do this except out of spite and bitterness. Either way, I'm glad I never wasted any of my time watching his channel.
@DontStopCornPop I've seen some of his stuff as it was heavily pushed on my for you and front page etc. I remember seeing one a good while ago now, I don't remember what the video was even about but he was saying then that he was getting pretty tired of doing the content he was doing. He was complaining then about how he wanted to do videos on stuff from different genres, but they basically got no views. You could tell actually then just how much that bothered him. So I can say that I was expecting something along these lines since then. I don't particularly go looking for his content, there are so many properly decent creators out there. I also need to admit that for me personally, he always just gave a properly weird vibe too. I don't know what it is. I do know that he was apparently told he was autistic. I'm absolutely certain I heard him say that. That could explain at least some of his actions/reactions too. But, I honestly think we are barely even scraping the surface. I think something is or has happened in the background and this is his reaction to whatever that was. If he purely just wanted to do something else with his life, he wouldn't be bitter about that. A normal person would either post a video saying thanks but they're done and then moved on. They wouldn't ghost their chanel and then turn up on some podcast absolutely slating the very people that gave you that platform and who supported you. Ya know? Sorry about the long comment, I just find this interesting. I've not seen many videos where they have said they think something else is behind it all. Surely most people can see what we see? Lol @DontStopCornPop
I wasn't a fan but I did watch him for some reason. What disappints me that he always said what a Death Metal fan he is and now he says that he isn't interested in music
I've seen some of his stuff a few years back, but something about him always irritated me. He always seemed a little fake, he only seemed to like the stuff that he thought would make him 'cool'. I stopped watching his stuff a couple of years ago, and frankly, now it suddenly all makes sense.
I used to like Finn. I've watched a lot of his content, especially the older stuff. But it didnt take long for me to notice how inconsistent and contradictory he is. He is also really good at talking without actually saying anything. I got bored with him. He thinks his opinions on music are way more important than they actually are lol
16:40 Nah. One of many things that turned me off of McKenty was when he started repeatedly saying bands/songs were "objectively bad," demonstrating that he doesn't know what the word "objective" means. He presented his opinions as if they were inarguable facts, even when they came from someone who has no real understanding of music beyond the names of bands and songs. He was aggressively insulting, then got butt-hurt when people called him out on it.
I like how the channel with punk rock in the name did probably the least punk rock thing, sacrifice creativity and passion to appease the algorithm and get ad venue.
Finn simply just found an effective way to pump out videos and exploit the RUclips algorithm. He talks about this briefly in some of his videos, he saw an opportunity to make money from this niche as well.
@@NightSide1349 Well, idk exactly how much money he made, he states he "met his financial goals" in the interview but I have a feeling that money will run out. And now that he's exposed his true self, he won't be able to go back to making videos. The whole "life is short I don't wanna do this forever" is him 100% coping. And I'm sure he believes it. @@NightSide1349I'm sure his quitting has nothing to do with the fact that everyone found out that he was dating a 16 year old for 2 years while he was like 33.
Turns out we found the one true poser. Metal Elitists need to make bad aplogy videos to make up for that before going to their backlog of Black Sabbath and Taylor Swift albums.
I always thought Finn had some good points but my biggest problem with him is the “this band isn’t hip and young anymore, so it’s sad people like them” angle he seemed to always come at things from. Yes, metal and rock fans have a problem with nostalgia goggles but god forbid people are passionate about a band that’s been around for a while. The long well respected careers is part of what makes it so great and unique to many other genres. Just because music is old doesn’t make it bad and I’ll never understand people who think otherwise. He also talks about “not being a tourist to this stuff” while also clearly not caring at all.
Especially when the younger generation agrees that new music sucks. That's how you know he was a poser the entire time. The biggest selling acts the past few years, are acts that have been around for 20 years.
Kinda ironic cause he did the same with modern bands. "This is not how you bring the spotlight back to metal" about sleep token selling out Wembley in 10 minutes. Something something Fred Durst, something something Britney Spears... Good riddance O7
I don't buy it. He doesn't care about music? Nah, sorry Finn. Say what you will about him, but he had a pretty encyclopaedic knowledge of late 80's/early 90's hardcore. I think at the end of the day he was just over the comments section. Towards the end I noticed a lot of people calling him out on having an inappropriate relationship with his wife pre-marriage. Guess that was kind of the straw that broke the camels back? Edit: See, this is what happens when you comment 2 minutes into the video. On the plus side, I feel deeply validated.
100% Agree, ain't no way a man who throws out a name like Havohej is a casual. I noticed he used the term "Low Vibrational Person" in an unironic-ish way so maybe he was just so chronically online he just lost his mind.
He called my favourite bands dorky while propping up bands like Sleep Token as the only way to get women in the scene (I'm a woman and I hate that shit.). I'm sure I've complained about him in your comments section before.
He also dedicated an entire video to shitting on Type O Negative for like, clout, I guess? The comment section on that one was pretty fucking hilarious.
He saying that he's not wanting to talk about bands of "two decades ago" saying that he doesn't need to talk about them now, like, if his channel wasn't about the HISTORY of those bands lol
Being nearly 50, dressing like you're 16, and crying like a 12 year old when you get hate, and act like a spoiled 14 year old the rest of the time is why he's so hateable. Been wondering why he's even successful from the start for years.
I unsubscribed and BLOCKED him 2 years ago. He was just too whiny and acted like your typical old guy complaining about everything. I’m glad I caught on really quick to his BS!
I thought his content was informal, I then watched this interview. Realized he's just souless that does it for the money, you manage to be a poser/elietist at the same time. It's honestly impressive.
That's your typical marketing airhead. He sponsored himself by giving marketing tips to people by starting a youtube channel. It was a facade all along that you could sense the past few months when he uploaded videos, got more and more soulless and cocky by basically telling people hes not going to do this shtick forever. He followed the algorithm by making content the people wanted
I quit watching Finn McKenty a few years ago when I finally realized he was a grifter. It's probably best for his own safety if he never shows up at any metal shows. Also, as a Canadian, I would welcome Godzilla as our new Prime Minister.
Agree with everything you said Wyatt. Finn didn't have to outright say he was only in it for the money, it was pretty obvious from watching his videos tbh
I hkind of feel bit fooled because I honestly thought he was into those bands as I have no idea who most of the bands he's talking about are, I just watched some of his videos to learn more. I still feel slightly dissapointed that he's not even fan of those random bands even if I'm not either.
I lost respect for him when he started to spout off random shots at people or bands he didn’t like. But now with him being this way, I’m thankful I talk about stuff I love on my channel.
Respect the honesty lol. I learned a few things from his wikipedia reads. I was never subbed, but I would click when he was talking about a band I liked. No hate.
I used to follow him when he went by the Sergeant D pseudonym. He had musical knowledge and was a fanboy of the powerviolence band Spazz. They even wrote songs about him. He allegedly made money off patents for Swiffer and wasn’t hurting for money. You can find his old content on MetalSucks but he was edgy and made jokes that would offend others in the current climate. That may have contributed to his disappearance as well? I had no idea he burned bridges and doesn’t care anymore.
I think anyone who really took the time to know the guy knows that he was very passionate about the music. He's got numerous band tattoos! I'm a bit shocked at this interview because I never expected this from him. It almost feels like a person with a broken & bitter heart talking about their nasty break up with someone. I know what I heard him say but it doesn't fit the person I had come to know and chat with from time to time. A very disappointing way to exit his RUclips legacy, however it's spawned hundreds of videos making creators money, and I'm sure no one making these videos is complaining about the money they're making.
I see it as another part of the act. He's playing the "It's me, not you" break up routine. This way, everyone hates him and leaves him alone. Like ending a relationship with a nutjob.
It seems like he lost his passion. I think it was there at first but he’s lost it. I’m the same with a recent hobby that turned into a job in my life. I have about 3 tattoos about it, that’s how much i was into it, for a time it made me good money. Now I couldn’t give a single fuck about it. So I know where he’s at
It shows how immature he actually is, instead of walking away and saying "i just dont like this anymore" He had to burn it all down and dump on all his followers which is extremely childish... No different than the "im taking my ball and going home" from a kid on the playground...

He came off as so pretentious in that interview. He certainly still loves music enough to have a hatebreed and Morbid Angel tattoo. It's a shame really. His content used to be pretty good and he had a lot of good advice for metal bands trying to grow. You could tell the soul left his videos over the past few years.
he said it himself plenty of times in his last months before stopping making videos for good. he just had no passion about the type of content he got stuck into
You said it when you said "you can control your audience". Good video. I hope his leaving makes some space for people to talk about Hatebreed, Morbid Angel, August Burns Red, Christopher Lee sings heavy metal Christmas carols or whatever people enjoy in life
Call me a naive normie but I was a huge Finn fan. He ALWAYS incorporated insights and humor into his stuff (especially his second channel). This video was heartbreaking.
Yeah, his videos were always insightful, and that's probably why I still watch his stuff. His announcement disappointed me more than anything, but him saying he doesn't enjoy music, I take that as him not enjoying music *anymore*, but he used to enjoy stuff like punk and hardcore, but was burned out from it. But yeah, even I can see that the way he handled his retirement announcement was pretty lame.
I used to watch his videos when you could tell he had passion and would give his real opinions on things and challenge the norm. I DID learn a decent amount from him, and some that I was able to transfer into with my own business. But it was clear to see when the passion started fading away. As a creator in the “alt” music world (making clothes NOT a content creator, so it’s slightly different) I’ve had to sometimes deal with bands I don’t like and don’t want to support.. but it’s a business and it just comes with the territory. Most of what I make revolves around the bands that I’m truly passionate about, but sometimes I gotta give the people what they want, so I’ll make yet another sleep Token dress and it’ll sell in a snap. That’s not gonna stop me from making a Sanguiasugabogg dress that’ll sit in my shop for months, but just finding the balance 🧘🏼♀️
I worked with a few bands in my career who hated the music they played and hated touring but it was their job. They were feeding their families as well as the production crews families with their music.

So much didn't add up.
It's a bummer because i followed him back when he was Sargeant D on MetalSucks and LambGoat. His blog Stuff You Will Hate was amazing during the college years when ib was going to shows and everyone in the Hardscore scene knew his blog. Trash always reveals itself overtime.
I knew finn was grifting from early on. The guy was very dead behind the eyes especially when he went onto rock feed and basically disassociated with Brian immediately. On the age gap stuff, his wife was 18 which is an ADULT who can vote to send men to their end so people need to get off their high horse. It's not like these girls are virtuous at 18 anymore speaking as Gen Z myself. He liked her, she clearly liked him and they've built a life together which is way better than these same 18 year olds chasing much older men with status for experiences, clout and one nighters.
Yea for the most part I agree with this. I definitely understand the problem if they started dating before she was 18 and he was in his 30s, at the same time theyve stayed together, she seems happy with him and no rumors he's tried for anyone else, so yea maybe kinda gross but it's not like he's pulling a Becerra
@wyattsmetal the issue is that my generation is the most infantillised generation. Gen Z know what we are doing since 14 but know we can scream victim especially in the case of girls if it all falls apart instead of taking ACCOUNTABILITY for our actions. I don't like Finn but labelling him trigger words like a sudo pdf file is not only inaccurate but false. I can tell you that if we are going off experience, most teen-young adult females have more dating experience than most males of gen z and even plenty of guys in their 50's and 60's. If anything it's insulting to females and their agency as a whole.
she wasnt 18, you stupid moron. She was either 17 or 16. And I know that, cuz I know this dude for a LONG time. I liked his Metalsucks articles, probably the only good thing that blog ever had. (and his SYWH shit too). Both him, and his wife used to have pics from them from like 2012 on instagram and he on Tumblr used to brag about his "hot young asian girlfriend" all the time. And that was around 2012 has well. At the time I didn't know how old his girlfriend was until she made her wannabe asian Candance Owens right wing propraganda channel. I did the math, and she would be 16 or 17 (dont remember which, cuz that was a while ago) and he was 34. Finn was the one that said that they only officially started dating(not met btw, that's bullshit) at 18 for obvious reasons. He didn't started dating her, the minute they met, they obviously knew eachother before that. And it's still creepy anyway, a guy in his mid 30's chasing and haging out with teenage girls, fresh out of highschool? Fuck off, with your infantile. incel-esque bullshit. The guy is a creep no matter if the his now wife was willing to date him at the time. He's still a groomer.
While sure, legally 18 year olds can vote and go die overseas for oil, the life experience between someone who is 34 and 18 is immense. This can create power dynamic issues, manipulation and all the other "grooming stuff" people mention. Granted, we don't know the inside story of their relationship but it is something that will get scrutiny. Age differences mean much less later on but adults and teenagers are a bit different.
@johnchedsey1306 18 is an adult. Are you telling me that someone who can make a decision about how a country can be run can't make a decision on their own personal dating choices. Factually the older guys will look to take the 18 year old more seriously than another 18 or 20's year old as the chances are that they have built themselves up to take care of a family where the younger dudes will just want to smash and then ditch since they've not got the means or mindset in most cases to treat the girl right. People are obsessed with power dynamics but an 18 year old gen z girl has way more dating experience than most guys in general and it's a fact that 1 in 3 males between 18-30 still have their V card or have gone a very long time without access as well as the std rate within females is something like 1 in 5 which makes them super spreaders. Factually, girls want older and experienced, whereas guys want youthful with minimal life trauma. Are gap relationships of this kind have been a thing forever, and the infantillising of ADULTS needs to stop. Taking accountability off of our choices is what's playing a significant factor in the mental health crisis. They are both old enough to make choices on their partners, and they have chosen well since they are happily married. She's not some child who is being held hostage like the f3m1n1s7$ brainwash people into believing.

I highly doubt he doesn't like music as he knows so much about niche genres nobody cares about.
I've seen some of his stuff a few years back, but something about him always irritated me. He always seemed a little fake, he only seemed to like the stuff that he thought would make him 'cool'. I stopped watching his stuff a couple of years ago, and frankly, now it suddenly all makes sense.

Nah i'm pretty sure giving up being a full-time poser is the end stage of most punk phases
Turns out we found the one true poser. Metal Elitists need to make bad aplogy videos to make up for that before going to their backlog of Black Sabbath and Taylor Swift albums.
i am happy all the great music channels are showing up in my feed.
Fact. He was just trolling and lost his passion.

I thought his content was informal, I then watched this interview. Realized he's just souless that does it for the money, you manage to be a poser/elietist at the same time. It's honestly impressive.
That's your typical marketing airhead. He sponsored himself by giving marketing tips to people by starting a youtube channel. He followed the algorithm by making content the people wanted
He would always drop he was in the metal scene in Columbus Ohio. Not one person I asked had ever heard of him. It all makes sense now.

I used to follow him when he went by the Sergeant D pseudonym. He had musical knowledge and was a fanboy of the powerviolence band Spazz. They even wrote songs about him. He allegedly made money off patents for Swiffer and wasn’t hurting for money.

Well said. I think his best video was the Tyler the Creator one. He seemed into the subject matter more.

@@neolbioldey when you say you like applepie and someone brings applepie, if you start complaining like "yeah but my mom used to do It without cinammon", "oof too much sugar", "is this even an Apple pie if it's glazed"... I start to doubt you really like applepie.
Specially if you openly double down on not liking It.
My thing, Finn never didn't state that he was creating videos and catering to the numbers as a YT creator all along leading up to the months before his kid was born. He also shared his other knowledge and better experience at business ventures. Frankly, all those surprised that he didn't care about those bands; he well stated to your faces that he didn't like that stuff and the audience didn't like his actual interests either. So make the money then carry on, you only live once and he has a child to care for now.
He's obviously just burning bridges.
The more hate that he gets from people who take him seriously, the more I like him.
Finn McKenty's an amazing heel fr
This guy gets it.
that interview is the punkest thing since the sex pistols
I think it was something along the lines of when making Spidey Comics you have great power and you should have great responsibility.
"smooth brained, low vibrational, negative people" ....armchair therapist sees through that lil admittance
Kinda Ironic, someone tell him he was the one dumping slop content lmao.
This is a perfect example of an internet persona. The internet is not real folks.
I’ve been following Finn since he wrote as Sgt D for Terrorizer and Metalsucks in the late 00s.
Marketing is his passion and music is one of his vehicles for pursuing it, not the other way around.
It gives him a unique perspective on things and he is willing to make criticisms that many others aren’t. But he dipped from MS as soon as he felt like he’d exhausted its potential, and he was always going to do the same with YT at some point.
He's a liar.
I watched his channel from the Beginning. " A RUclipsr talking about Metal and Hardcore bands I LOVED growing up?" I was smitten. Lol To hear straight from the posers mouth that " I did it for the money . I never liked or like musicians and music " and " I reached my financial goals " is heart breaking. Hes a poser . He never loved it. He took the best parts of our culture in metal and hardcore and punk and used it , just used it to make money. Disgusting. He really Hood Winked us. This is is why we need gate keeping. Cause above all, were PROTECTING what we love. From people like Finn. He really did trick us.
As a RUclipsr myself that is only just scraping by doing it full time him saying "I had no passion for it and did it for the money" makes me mad that he ever made it in the first place
80% of RUclipsrs just do it as a job, not everyone has PASSION for making the videos they do, there’s also no need for that. Actually some of the most popular and biggest channels don’t care for the content. Pretty much every commentary channel, all the mr beast types, reaction content…
Never liked dude, he always came off as a poser. People also point out he was "talking" to his wife before she was 18. Some say she was actually closer to 16. With 2024 being the year of outing for suspect creators, seems like he's just quitting ahead of the expose. lol
I wish I could take credit for it, but as someone else said on another video, saying he was only in it for the money is ironically the only punk rock thing he's ever done. 😂
i dont buy that he didnt care about music. if you're only trying to make money there are way easier ways to do that than to create a music commentary youtube channel. he even admits that he wrote for multiple metal outlets. dude just fell off. viewership was down and everyone in the scene hated him. good riddance tbh
