With the overwhelmingly positive response to my most recent video, I've enjoyed going through all of the comments. I consistently saw one thing brought up that I did not touch upon much in my video: the art of poser culture and how this situation impacts it and what it tells us about it. I wanted to give my perspective on that! What're your thoughts on this topic?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Oh damn I was just calling him that earlier haha nice. He is definitely one. I recognized it pretty quick but then again I only ever watched one video so maybe others it was not as obvious. Can't remember the band but it was clear immediately that he did not know anything about music, or at least looked down on punk as not music.
What I noticed about Punk Rock MBA (having only wathced a few videos, including the Black Metal episode), is not that he is necessarily a poser, but that he has this "ironic distance" to everything he does. It's "I'm listening to metal lol" and no real dedication. I think a poser is someone who like to appear as a community member for social reasons, but don't actually like or care about the thing. Ironical distance hipsters like the thing, but won't admit it to the community for social reasons. Finn appears more like the latter.
@@TheMetalTempestYT this should be a lesson to all fans or gatekeepers of anything. People are hyper focused on what’s popular or cool. One day you will grow up and just like what you like.
Its not really sad at all. He took advantage of a platform that might be wildly different in ten years. He didnt view himself as part of any youtube scene realistically. Hes a harcore kid from the late 80's, 90's. The only people with hurt feelings are the ones who actually thought they had some sort of relationship with him or any youtuber for that matter. He obvously did exactly what he intended to do from the start. Move on. @@TheMetalTempestYT
He was just a 90s hardcore kid that knew about the victory records scene from back then, but not much else. Talking about business and earth crisis for the 30th time didn’t get the views that nu metal did though.
That was a lot of my issue with him too, but even in his lane I didn't like his bag. Like Talking about Earth Crisis and album sales is missing the point. Bands want people to hear their music and love their art, but the band talking about how mass consumerism and industrialization is killing us probably don't care about the US Rock Album Sales charts
There are a lot of bands my audience likes that I can’t get into. Am I gonna call them wrong or smoothbrained for liking them? No! But sometimes even they can offer me something that I can get turned onto. The issue I have with this situation is him insulting the audience that gave him his “financial goals.” These are people who buy shirts, share videos with friends, get your views up. You gotta respect your audience. Also, the Lords of Chaos thing. It’s funny how in MY video on it, I said the exact opposite. “This movie isn’t the final say in the Norwegian black metal story.” Haha!
Whoa! I've watched you for more years than I can count. Crazy to see you here! That's exactly my mentality too. You can want quality in music, but just don't be a dick to people. Especially if you're a creator, you have to understand your audience won't always agree with you and vice versa. Cheers man!
I have to play the devil's advocate here, cause i watched the interview and he never called smoothbrained people who just like the music of these bands, he directed that comment specifically to the ones demading creators to talk about the controversies and scandal aspects these bands often get involved into, just for the sake of talking about it, like conversation gossip fodder because of their fame and notoriety at a given moment. Im sorry, but encouraging this behauvior on creators and and the audience rewarding them with views is not worth respecting at all and deserves critique, if people took that comment personally and got insulted by it then its time for a good look in the mirror. What really surprised me is that he got the balls to admit all of this out loud without caring about how people would react, and to be honest thats commendable amists all the respectability politics and PR bulshit online with people being afraid of mildly challenging things involving critique of their own audience...
If you ever watched his twitch streams he would attack people in the comments who disagreed with his takes. Finn - this band right here is absolutely trash Fan - I kinda liked this album by them Finn - that's cause your a loser!!! Dude was such a prick 😂 I think he was basically trolling everyone and was seeing how far he could get before dipping out with the bag. Or that people found out his wife was a minor when he was dating her.. there's that too 😂
The most insidious thing Finn did was actually engaging with his fanbase, he'd read and respond to youtube comments and answer DMs which is honestly just masochistic for somebody with 600k subs, but turns out this was because he'd get more engagement, viewer retention, and money.
What I've learned is if money is all your care about in this, especially talking about music like metal, you're going to get exiled, and probably hunted. I might not upload much but i still care about the music and I will proudly wear that on my sleeves
If RUclips is your main source of income, it’s going to be your driving factor. Sure you might like it too, but chances, are if most metal content creators, or content creators in general, stopped making money, they would stop content creation all together. Or at the very least, take a major decrease in content creation
@FancyxToast yeah but he only cared about money, and got burned out. For me, when I upload, I do it for myself and for people interested. If he cared about his fans and the channel, he wouldn't be burned out.
@ that’s very easy to say when your main source of income doesn’t depend on the content you create. Would it be nice if every content creator was like that? Of course. But at the end of the day, this is a job for a lot of people. We like to feel connected to them, but a lot of the people we watch would not continue if they stopped making money. Same way that store employee who is really chill and nice to you and friendly wouldn’t be there anymore if their boss stopped paying them
There was one video where he mentioned "Shout at the Devil" as Motley Crue's first album. Now c'mon, no matter what you think about Crue or the 80s glam scene, this error can be easily cleared up by five seconds on Wikipedia!
I think the single most important story that can help you understand him is his story of showing up at his first punk show wearing a pantera shirt. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but he was apparently treated poorly and called a poser for it. That would come up time and time again when he talked about gatekeepers and elitists. He said he was already a kid who didn't feel welcome in various ways, and his opinions seemed to really solidify in that moment. Just openly resenting the community because of one experience, and then helping to create his treatment by focusing on it in a negative way.
@thirdlegstalliano he made up liking Havohej and having Hatebreed tattoos? Life isn't black and white and you're not psychic. For the record, his capitalistic approach makes my skin crawl.
I think the true embodiment of his views on alternative music is that infamous video he made on trap metal, where he in so many words said that the only way for metal to survive is for the scene to be taken over by non metalheads, pretty sure the phrasing of it was along the lines of “this is the future of the metal scene whether metalheads like it or not”. It just showed how little he values artistry, skill, and community, he can’t see the value in something if it isn’t there to make money which is so sad.
His weird obsession with glazing trap and SoundCloud rappers was always off-putting to me. All the while he would dismiss a prog metal band for being boring or bland.
@@beingprovidence he once said that the more complicated and proggy stuff didn't do much for him, and what he liked were songs with "hooks", aka singles, so the deeper cuts, which sometimes were more interesting songs than the popular ones, and genres showcasing more complexity, different structures, and proficiency were boring to him, and then I understood that he was just a "mall rock" consumer/listener (in that order), which isn't wrong at all, but he presented himself as this connoisseur extraordinaire, which is just phony. This guy had very good arguments sometimes, but he just happened to be a 90's kid who was exposed to some of the bands he made videos about. I think the latest video where he "confesses" why he stopped making videos, he is 50/50 trolling and telling the truth.
there was something you said there that hit it big time with me: people always confuse knowing-your-shit with being an elitist. it's like the first thing that gets thrown into your face once you prove your opinion has more weight than theirs. anyone who takes something seriously is going to have something polarizing and opinionated to say about it. that's just having passion and knowing what you're talking about. being elitist is different. that's why when someone gets called an elitist, I usually perk up and pay more attention to what they have to say because chances are they've just been falsely labeled by someone who doesn't know as much as they do and had to come back with something. that said, Finn was a poser and did NOT know his shit and still paraded as if he did. elitist. and a big reason I love this controversy is because I called it the entire time and it's been a confirmation to me that my gut is to be trusted.
It’s the internet, 90% of the content creators weighing in on a subject don’t have any sort of real experience or expertise. Most just regurgitate questionable information they found online. Finn was just a participant in the internet culture and found an avenue to monetize. Was it kind of a dirtbag thing to do? Yeah, it is. But there are a million of those people out there.
BTW, RUclips is more likely to delete videos and channels that actually so have something more intelligent and analytical to say, especially wrt controversial topics.
I remember watching his (quickly delisted) video about American Head Charge and trying to show it to a former member of the band that I know going "hey man this dude sounds like he got a lot of stuff wrong" and Aaron just *laaaaughed* and said he sure did. I think a lot of people in the industry knew Finn was full of it for a LONG time before this all came to light.
I used to watch him and I like enjoyed his content ngl. But then I kept like stop watching him then watch him again. And most of his info was very like generic and like if they’re from Wikipedia. Then I discovered other RUclipsrs that covered the things he did in more detail. And I started doing my own research I realize he was wrong about a lot of stuff. So I did suspect something was off about him but I would’ve never expected this it’s crazy. It’s sad bc he got me into a lot of bands :/ Great video too!
What I always found kind of funny about Finn was just how obvious it was that he had no idea what he was talking about. One of the big ones was his "helpful hints for bands". As someone who spent years in a very small local/semi-regional band, having access to and the means to have a solid line of merch or to be able to get booked by venues local or not isn't something that's just available for everyone starting out. For him to say stuff like that made it pretty obvious he had no fucking clue what it's actually like to be in a band. Regardless of what level your band is at, it ALWAYS boils down to knowing the "right" people and having the financial means to make shit happen. Why would a venue ask my band that no one has ever heard of to open for Agent Orange or whoever is coming to town especially when there's that other local band that's been around for 15-20 years that the people who run the venue are personally friends with? Stuff like that was why his "advice" was always dogshit and makes me think he probably never went to a small show because his "advice" would be shit like "get booked opening for a bigger band on their next tour". The only way that can happen for most bands is to either somehow have the bigger band know who your band is and like your band enough that they ask you to come on tour with them OR have the financial means to buy your way onto a tour (which you'd be surprised how common that one is). Dude was always very clearly a fraud.
its pretty silly but i also dont like getting asked in public when im shopping at the store to name 5 songs cause im wearing a band shirt fuckin dickheads
It’s impossible to have “no interest in music” and then make 20 years of music content, including rankings of obscure genres and albums. I think he just got burnt out
What doesn't make any sense in Finn's "I was only doing it for the money" statement is that it contradicts the podcasts he did. He got so many guests from scene, including big names like JORDAN FISH for crying out loud. If he really only did it to cash in on a check and call it a day, why go to the trouble of securing interviews like that? That feels like it would be a hassle to work out for any monetary interview in general. At the same time, though, that probably ties back to his experience in the business world. Even still... I dunno, I feel like he probably just got burned by the negativity and lashed out in the worst way possible. Either way, he is probably the biggest example of a poser I've seen thus far in ANY field, if it's true he never even liked music in the first place.
He only is saying that to take the power back. He was getting dragged by detractors and it hurt his feelings, so he's like "You idiots, I DIDNT EVEN LIKE music and you ate my content up, what a villain I am".
Finn started the negativity. He trashed all kinds of people. He said racist things about Babymetal who have never said a bad thing about anyone in 14 years.
@Dragon-Believer His trashing of Japanese metal/rock just felt like someone determined not to like it. Rick Beato was kind of similar. In Finn's case though, I suspect it was to do with having a young Vietnamese wife, and being determined to show he wasn't like all those guys 'into' East Asian women, and showing he hates all these bands with East Asian women became his 'proof'.
@RevStickleback Rick Beatto is just an old man who only wants to talk about The Beatles. Which is fine. But don't trash new music just because you're feeling nostalgic. Personally I don't like nostalgia. I'm 51 myself. It makes me feel old to listen to music from 40 years ago.
@@KenjaTimuI’m 34, I like listening to old music, but not for nostalgia or anything, I feel like rock music has gotten so compartmentalized into these hyper specific genres that the real talented rock bands won’t even try their hand at crossover because they’ll get accused of selling out.
Elitism and Gatekeeping are not the way forward. Am I saying not to be wary of grifters like him and bad faith actors? Absolutely not, but that isn't how to do it. That doesn't invite or keep new fans, that doesn't broaden the horizon. It shrinks it. Despite Finns frankly egregious handling and addressal to former fans, we need to be better than him not by meeting bitter for bitter but by proving him wrong. That metal, rock, alternative these communities do have good folk.
@@FracturedDMR I'm not trying to bring new fans to black metal, for example. It is what it is. Either you like it or you don't. That's not even getting into the spiritual and philosophical beliefs that most reject outright as being silly cosplay. Elitism and gatekeeping prevent outsiders from trying to fuck with the core of whatever they are infiltrating.
I watched a few of his videos and he rubbed me the wrong way. Some of the personal opinions he was peppering through his videos showed his hand and his disdain for the subjects. At least that bald guy who basically reads wikipedia articles for "Rock 'N Roll True Stories" seems humble and doesn't pretend to be something he's not.
I watched Finn's channel. He disappeared and I didn't really notice. The moral of the story: RUclips is a low brow entertainment service offering. Followers aren't fans, they are consumers.
Totally depends on the type on content. Trust me when I say the communities on history and science channels are not at all like you just described. The truth is that RUclips is massively diverse because of how many people both watch content on it but also how many different kinds of content and content creators there are on the platform.
When I would watch his content, I would often hear him talk about how he saw all these bands in the early 90s, playing a gig in some guy's walk-in closet, and now they're huge. And about how much the local punk scene influenced him back in the day, but how he grew disillusioned with it over time and grew to dislike it. So I'm not tooooo surprised that he felt the same way about his own content / his viewers. It often seemed like he was purposefully playing the heel character in his videos, taking dissenting positions and shouting unpopular opinions with a shit-eating grin. Like he was just saying whatever he could to make his viewers mad. Even as far as calling them smooth-brained pretty regularly. The the other times I'd be watching his content I'd think "That was a pretty shallow overview." Or sometimes I'd even be like "wow, even I know that's not entirely correct." So over time I felt like he would just pump out the "wikipedia" videos for views and then, especially in content that came from his livestreams, he would just troll and say whatever he though would piss off the smoothbrained dude-bro metalheads that he imagined were watching.
I'm beginning to appreciate Finn now, for the fucked up caricature of what he was and a lesson to people who spend too much time online drooling over content
This was the explanation of what’s going on that I needed. Thanks. I was confused when I first learned about all this controversy yesterday, since I’d not paid terribly close attention to him for several years, despite following him closely in 2018-2019. Nothing I remember from those earlier days struck me as “poser.” Elitist? Sure, but if elitism offends you, then the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes aren’t for you. Thanks for taking the time to lay out some specifics, rather than just ranting about what an asshole he is. Most people from those scenes in the 90’s were assholes.
It’s nearly impossible to have a middle class lifestyle in metal media. Everyone who seriously goes down that road hits several ethical dilemmas where they can get paid well to disingenuously cover the music one way or get paid almost nothing to genuinely cover the music another way. In a world where everyone has an opinion that can be blasted out to the internet with barely any invested energy, the only way to stand out is to be willing to say shit no one else will, which is probably just going to be made up or exaggerated drama.
i mean, i never particularly liked him or followed him, precisely because to me it was clystar clear how generic, out of wikipedia and targeted to the youtube algorithm his content was, it always felt like he prioritized marketing and profit first and foremost. So to me what was surprising were not the facts, but hearing him admit out loud the truth himself, id never tought he'd do that, so i really commend him for being honest at least after all these years without caring how his followers would take it, hopefully it encourages people to be more critical of the content they consume. I really dont get how people think of what he said as insulting? how is admiting the truth he was dealing with and sick of insulting? maybe its because im completely detached that i dont have any feelings...
Yeah people are being waaaayyyyy to sensitive about this whole situation. It's really blowing my mind how fragile these "rockers" and "metalheads" are......
@@MrKingkz he was incredibly racist towards Babymetal and all Japanese music. I guess he was overcompensating because his wife is Korean and he met her before she was 18. But that is no excuse to be openly racist.
I didn't care too much when I first heard that he'd quit but I only really saw an excerpt of what was said which bsically amounted to "I've made enough money doing this and I don't care enough to do it anymore." What got under my skin is when I saw more about it and how he basically just sat and insulted everyone who followed him for this long. He went after our music taste which he played into for so long, he went after our politics which is the whole basis of the scene and he just went after the culture of musicians and punk rock as a whole. I don't care enough about him to be full on angry but I do feel a bit let down by it all. What I'm struggling to wrap my head around though is the idea that he's gonna be a life coach on LinkedIn? Dumb platform really to begin with but also, after he showed his whole ass during that podcast, how does he think anyone is gonna trust him to give him money for his advice now? It's honestly kinda laughable because he could have just quietly slipped away and no one would have been any the wiser. There'd be a bunch of videos like "Where's Finn McKenty?" and "what happened to the punk rock MBA?" but he could have just disappeared with the money he made and pursued this new role without going on and monologing about his dastardly plan like a moustache twirling villain. Now I just don't see how anyone is supposed to trust a word that comes out of his mouth whether they followed him before or not because a quick google search of his name right now is gonna bring all of this up. It really just seems like he played himself here.
Now that I really think about it, I think he did this knowing the controversy it was going to stir up and how people were probably going to run back through his videos, increasing his views for as long as possible after he left. It worked. He's all over youtube.
It just hurts when he would even heart or respond to my own comments. Like I knew he was into marketing and I was thinking he was going to move his channel in that direction which is something I wasn’t interested in so thanks Finn for making it way easier for me to leave.
I never really ever listened to his stuff at all I followed him on Instagram cause I thought he was just a troll. 😂 As a musician I don't listen to none musicians talk about music at all. Musicians usually enjoy various styles the hardcorest metal head will listen to bluegrass or jazz another whole genre. Or some real niche style like me southern metalcore or southerncore still holds a special place in my heart.
Super fire take and how exactly I felt about his content for the last 2 years, because I felt that sometimes he would say things that seemed elitist then next time taking about the same band even be talking like a poser. He did not even know that much about the Victory Records Era either though I grew up in that era and loved metal since I was young and can spot a poser from a mile away.
I’m astonished that anyone was surprised by this. I saw two videos and told RUclips to stop recommending me his videos. I knew he was a joker from the beginning and didn’t deserve a platform. I’m usually right about these kinds of things, that’s why I don’t have many friends I guess😅
He was okay, but there are many others I prefer to watch. If you actually know the history, you live it, not just love it. I know, been a metalhead of some type since the 70's.
Dude had an "i was there" for literally every topic he did. He was the most stereotypical and obvious poser from day 1. The most annoying thing was that it was dead obvious from the get go, but I felt like a hater and softened on him. Always trust yout gut children. Always trust your gut.
I feel like everyone felt this way lol. He made me second guess music I've hated for years not to the point of liking it most of the time but enough to at least appreciate his take on it. Kinda like a poser who knows his shit I guess. He got a lot worse with the smug arrogance over the years though and that's why I imagine a lot of people including myself stopped watching his content.
I've made QUITE a few and plan on making some more but here are some links of a few DSBM vids I've made :D I do plan on doing a redux of my guide and some other videos including only listening to DSBM for a week. also wanting to just in general do more rough guide to genres. cheers! :] ruclips.net/video/vnzU1qseSwM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/dz3Nfi0_0LI/видео.html&t
Dude was always a poser in my eyes. Always just talking about chart stuff and t-shirt bands, with a few well placed mentionings of minor threat or shit like that. Always been very obvious he has no real clue, no real punk rock, just a whole bunch of SoaD and 30 seconds to mars. Never liked him (but clicked him as well, obviously)
Couldn’t the guy have done it a little more intelligently though? Wouldn’t it have been smarter to have made a farewell video saying he was gonna do something else in life and just left on better terms so he’d still get some sort of residual from his past videos? Rather, he dips out like that dude from Half Baked without even saying “you’re cool” to even one person.
I don’t think he did anything wrong tbh. And I don’t think he “has no interest in music”. He has band tattoos and no one does this for that long if you have no interest in it. I think he wanted to create content, ended up gaining a certain audience, ended up making a living off this audience, and was forced to create content he didn’t care about all the time in order to continue making money. And at the end of the day, you can still enjoy his content. Not everyone is going to be passionate about their job. Not every actor loves the movie they’re in and not every musician loves some of their music. But they still do it and people still enjoy it, so what does it matter. I also think he has a lot of reasons to be pissed and want to troll the metal community. It’s a pretty toxic place and all they do is shit on him, if he was really fed up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to hit them where it hurts
As a huge power violence fan I only ever saw that video from him and it definitely was lacking. Called Dystopia powerviolence for some reason and left out huge influential acts in the scene like Charles Bronson and Lack of Interest
One of my friends from high school was a journalist for a large computer magazine. He's not really all that into computing. The magazine really liked his writing, the pay was decent, and traveling to conventions was appealing to him. Is he a poser? Kinda i guess. The magazine like having him, the readers seemed to like the articles so in the end everybody is happy..Finn had a gift for telling stories. People liked listening to the stories. Everybody got what they wanted so why is everyone mad?
Try again. Dude didn't take a job. He created a job, swearing he was passionate only to be proven a fraud. It's ok, I never tool his opinion seriously though considering my knowledge of music runs laps around his.
I watched a couple of his vids a couple years ago about some bands I used to like a lot. It was interesting but never any deeper than what I already knew. He had good delivery though so it kept my attention but never enough to sub or make a point of watching regularly. Hearing this fallout though has been entertaining and honestly to me it sounds a lot more like him lashing out at the audience more than him actually hating the music he talked about. I am sure he had to cover bands he cared nothing about though, that is just part of the YT game and critics have to do it all the time while remaining impartial to their personal taste.
Honestly as someone who was a fan and ducked out before this whole meltdown, like a good while before? Its kinda saddening to see him just melt down into this bitter, vindictive type character. Like he turned me onto shit like Boxcar racer and I enjoy that album, that album is how I found +44 when I went looking. So, for him to just discard his entire legacy and serve anyone that did like him a middlefinger like that? Talk about salting earth man.
I'm Finn's age and work in the corporate world. It's marketing adjacent and as soul crushing as it gets. But it pays... That ungrateful and dubious hack has no business calling musicians a lost cause and he ought to feel ashamed for ripping the aesthetics and style of metal and punk. On top of that interviewing these supposed "lost causes" on his podcast and lying to everyone. And it's no secret that he's trying to cover for his rightoid wife who called gays groomers while Finn met her fresh outta high-school... (Take a seat over here, Finn). If she was actually serious about *her* beliefs she wouldn't have wiped her channel. I'm so glad to have found this channel, and i think you're awesome. Keep up the good work. 👍 And if you have to quit, I know you wouldn't shit on your body of work and audience just because you had to do a different line of work. Metal never dies. 🔥 Thankfully posers do.
I really appreciate this comment, thank you so much! I agree with literally everything you're talking about here LMAO. And I am very grateful to be able to make things I really love for an audience of people I love and respect. I never take that for granted.
But it's leftist weirdos who say shit like this that he is insulting. People in the metal and punk scene used to be tough and interesting but they are largely insane liberal weirdos who have TDS and can't see how they are killing the genre with their emotional instability and obsession with weird shit like anime.
@@bobcooper82 I try my hardest to read and respond to as many as I can! It's sometimes difficult but I really do love to see people's perspectives, agree or disagree--it's not uncommon for me to respond to some pretty heinous stuff haha. But omg, sending you hugs
i was wondering g as i get older i like music but i dont like the ppl at all in the culture of music 😅 fans ruined the experance of concerts or music conversation for me atleast …. im wondering does this make me a poser or do i just hate how parasoical fan bases of music really are 😅😅😅
I discovered Deathgrips through a Finn video, so can’t be mad at the guy. For hating what he did, he sure did a fantastic job of faking it. Not upset at him at all. Do you Finn
The best thing we can do is to quit talking about him. Anyone who was actually involved in the scene and knew their shit didnt listen to his BS anyways. The more we talk about him, the more publicity he'll get in his future endeavors. Fuck that. Hes a wort on the scene and should be treated as such.
This reminds me a lot of criminal psychology, and how some criminals will make a scene after they have committed a crime in an attempt to deflect from the fact they did it, or scapegoat someone else. The untrained eye and ear might believe it, but those who have dealt with such people, or know some basic psychology would pick up on it. Finn was basically deflecting and making and scene the entire time to get views and money. He was the criminal all along, but most people didn't catch on to it.
I remember seeing a video of his saying "get out of your garage, get out of yoir band and get a job" all the while he was just sitting in his room scrolling through youtube and playing music videos in the background. Dude, if you want to say "get off your butt", maybe don't be on your butt blindly going through music videos while you do it.
I've seen a ton of videos PunkRockMBA put out. Particularly the Black metal one in question at the beginning of this video. And I don't believe he said (at least not as be all end all statement) that what happened in LOC WAS AND IS What Black Metal is about. I feel he was stating it as the incident that brought it "mainstream," as most of today's generation who are into black metal, probably saw that movie and thought it was gospel... And quite frankly. We're all f'n posers! All of us! We tend to wear band tees, often dye our hair (as metal heads, often black) we'll grow out our hair, start dressing like what we see on television and movies, what we see our favorite bands doing. We do. All of us. Young and old. Not saying anything bad. But people calling out posers without looking in a mirror...
He was a poser, but not delusional. He was aware of what he was doing, the majority of posers believe what they think they are. Not being passionate about what you do is not a job prerequisite.
I grew up on 80’s hc/grind/pv and always thought metal/black metal was cringe. I dont get the fantasy aspect and the make up. Most metal fans act like tough shit…then you hear the music 😐
My thoughts exactly. I know guy back from HS who is still "true punk". Shitty tattoos, string of shitty dead end jobs, hangs around bunch of teens who are in their "punk phase", sleeps drunk on the park bench. All the same shit we did as teens. But he ain't teen no more, he is in his late 30s. Rest of us grew up and accepted that we are adults. I still love metal, go to shows, buy vinyl records from bends i like, but also have normal job, family and music fandom isn't my only sense of identity. Poser/true fan is for teen discussions to be honest.
I completely disagree - imo Finn is a perfect example of a poseur: someone pretending to be something they're not, and his case also demonstrates why it's loathsome. The abuse of the term is another thing.
First time I watched one of Finn's videos, he said that Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious word a chain around his neck with a razorblade hanging from it. I chose not to watch his crap ever again. (Sid wore a PADLOCKED neckchain - so much for Finn's "Punk Rock PhD" or whatever he claimed to have lol)
I think the thing that really makes me feel gross about this whole situation is how Finn would constantly try to push narratives and police behavior in the metal community knowing full well he wasn't apart of it.
Holy fuck, posers are so stupid 😭. "He became what he hated most" ass situation, istg. Anyways, dude, it's so weird (in a good way) that I found this channel just now lol. Now i have an actual metalhead to watch, and you're consistent too. You're fucking awesome, man 🫶
Nearly every music biopic is exaggerated and based on fact rather than attempting to stay 100% true to it's subject. It is made to be entertaining and Lords of Chaos is no different (but is an enjoyable enough movie for what it is).
Im pretty sure many people did what I did back then when he appeared alot in recommendations. Watched a couple videos and then clicked on the "Not recommending" button. He just seemed like he tried to hard to have a point.
well tbh , those black metal kids were just trying everything for shock value and one of them was super psychotic and that's all you need to know about lords of chaos. Children playing, not even a poser thing.
I think finn started out actually wanting to talk about the punk scene he came from (hes been around a long time) and show people the cool bands that he grew up going to see, then he slowly but surely stopped making content because he was interested in educating about bands and scenes and more because he had no other meaningful source of income, and the low-effort, low-interest videos took over because people would just hate watch, once it became clear Finn knew nothing about whatever band he was talking about that week people who actually knew about the band would just get into a shouting match in the comments (which in turn would bring more traffic to his videos, and get more people pissed off at his poor takes) and his channel just death spiraled. I think he played into this aswell, the amount of times he talked about really boring mainstream pop musicians and spoke very positively on people who are basically blacklisted in the alternative-sphere (Machine Gun Kelly, The Kid Laroi, Blackbear), he was farming hate, he knew those videos would garner alot of traffic from people coming to just complain about him uplifting corporate trash. I understand that if content creation is your main source of income you gotta upload sometimes when you really dont want to, but Finn just seemed like he genuinely hated everything he made, and it was so visible and clear to the viewer that that was the case. Overall man im not at all suprised he crashed out like this, he became exactly what the hardcore punk kid he was growing up wouldve hated, which has to be a really crushing feeling, basically just selling out your beliefs in the literal sense for a paycheck and clout. I wouldnt be suprised if we get a "I'm back" video in a few months, as after the guy burned an astronomical amount of bridges and goodwill upon taking his leave i wouldnt be suprised if nobody wants to work with his "media management for music influencers" thing.
He always seemed uncanny to me. It honestly makes sense he was just researching. I think him not liking music at all sounds strange though lol I saw a video where he said he originally made content of bands he liked then essentially started talking about bands he didnt like. He definitely adapted poser for those ones and he had a ton of inaccuracies while he framed himself as being there. I find it super interesting and uncanny how elitist he was too.

Everything that guy said about his history in the hard core scene was and is a lie.

Exactly
I love that band. The War of Art is a perfect album front to back.
I think that was the first time I noticed too, good call
I know people from hardcore bands who have said that about him including one who used to be in his beloved hatebreed.
I lost any respect for him when he interviewed Blair White.
What I call a poser, someone who wears a band t-shirt, but doesn’t like the music
Yep and that's most kids these days. It seems like
well, he neither liked the bands nor wear their merch
its pretty silly but i also dont like getting asked in public when im shopping at the store to name 5 songs cause im wearing a band shirt fuckin dickheads
It’s impossible to have “no interest in music” and then make 20 years of music content, including rankings of obscure genres and albums.
I think he just got burnt out
This.
Finn proving why elitism and gatekeeping are actually good things was probably the least surprising thing this year had to offer.
Exactly!

Excellent breakdown!!!
i mean, i never particularly liked him or followed him, precisely because to me it was clystar clear how generic, out of wikipedia and targeted to the youtube algorithm his content was, it always felt like he prioritized marketing and profit first and foremost.

I'm reminded of Syndrome
"ohhhh, you smoothbrain, you got me MONOLOGUING!!"
fkn Finndrome over here.
Now that I really think about it, I think he did this knowing the controversy it was going to stir up and how people were probably going to run back through his videos, increasing his views for as long as possible after he left. It worked. He's all over youtube.

Poser bells rang when he wouldn't stop commenting on the clothes bands wore.
Really? Clothes!?!
Exactly, if he really did the content he liked, he would probably be still around today. Many with lesser fans, but a more loyal fan base
Well. Well versed. Just means you know how to pay attention and pass at school. Even if you don’t care about the subject matter.
Good point.
Did he act like the be all end all about knowing about computers? If not he was already better than Finn
Not the best analogy lol
Try again. Dude didn't take a job. He created a job, swearing he was passionate only to be proven a fraud. It's ok, I never tool his opinion seriously though considering my knowledge of music runs laps around his.
I watched Finn a few times, I don't know why anyone would think he was 'objective'.
I watched his channel but i never subscribed to his channel. Something did seem a little off about him and now we know.
"You became the very thing you swore to destroy"
Oh the irony of it all
They say that the drones were spraying liquid sewage but since its over Jersey there's no way to tell for sure.
Finn Mckenty is like Rick Beato if he couldn't play any instruments and was always trying to steal your wallet.
Fantano?
Flat billed poser critiquing another flat billed poser etc.
haha, if you think that that's chill :p
I watched a couple of his vids a couple years ago about some bands I used to like a lot. It was interesting but never any deeper than what I already knew. He had good delivery though so it kept my attention but never enough to sub or make a point of watching regularly. Hearing this fallout though has been entertaining and honestly to me it sounds a lot more like him lashing out at the audience more than him actually hating the music he talked about. I am sure he had to cover bands he cared nothing about though, that is just part of the YT game and critics have to do it all the time while remaining impartial to their personal taste.
Opal in sky is great
Facts!
We need a finn Mccenty diss song stat!
Finn McKenty is the way that he is because he got made fun of by Spazz in the 1990s and he never got over it
I'm Finn's age and work in the corporate world.
And if you have to quit, I know you wouldn't shit on your body of work and audience just because you had to do a different line of work. Metal never dies. 🔥
Thankfully posers do.
@@TheMetalTempestYT😢 won't lie I teared up a little to know that you read my comment
@@bobcooper82 I try my hardest to read and respond to as many as I can! It's sometimes difficult but I really do love to see people's perspectives, agree or disagree--it's not uncommon for me to respond to some pretty heinous stuff haha. But omg, sending you hugs
Well said 👏
Wtf is poser culture? Music doesnt have to define you
Poser culture is a term made up by gatekeepers of ________ (
i think he was talking about the book lords of chaos (which is also bad), i don't think you can learn anything at all from the movie.
i was wondering g as i get older i like music but i dont like the ppl at all in the culture of music 😅 fans ruined the experance of concerts or music conversation for me atleast …. im wondering does this make me a poser or do i just hate how parasoical fan bases of music really are 😅😅😅
I discovered Deathgrips through a Finn video, so can’t be mad at the guy.
Finn McKenty: the kid who walks with his skateboard.
Only good thing Finn did was get me to listen to sepultura.
yeah!! i'm sure he turned a ton of people onto some great stuff!
Finn Mckenty is a real pro in creating content and pushing the channels forward. Good work he does, especially when he doesn't like the music at all.
He bitched about “gatekeepers “ all the time. In truth , he just wanted to be the ultimate gatekeeper.
The craziest thing is that he was so against posers just for him to not care about music at all. Actually despicable
Never thought the poser term would ever be useful in my life. Finn proved me wrong.
If you're older than 23 and still calling people "posers" you're the problem. Grow up 👍
exactly. poser culture is so fucking dumb LOL
@@nietzscheankant6984pretty sire finn hates everything but earth crisis and stays true to himself, getting that bag
Finn scared to get in the pit
Holy fuck, posers are so stupid 😭. "He became what he hated most" ass situation, istg. Anyways, dude, it's so weird (in a good way) that I found this channel just now lol. Now i have an actual metalhead to watch, and you're consistent too. You're fucking awesome, man 🫶
Aw, thank you so much! I really appreciate the support. and you're so real for that shit LMFAOO. happy to have you here!
Thank you for speaking truth. ❤
It’s amusing that so many people are so flustered about this. Who cares 😂
He presented himself as something he fundamentally was not in order to gain clout in that subculture. The definition of a poseur.
Yo what if he turned poser so that his previous videos would get more attention?
Where did Finn go?
well tbh , those black metal kids were just trying everything for shock value and one of them was super psychotic and that's all you need to know about lords of chaos.
