But now we can learn all kinds of things about the virus called Varicella-Zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles. What is its structure and how does it infect cells? I spent most of my professional career as a certified nurse-midwife. In the mid-1980s, I worked for several years in a large public health hospital that did 1200 to 1500 deliveries per month. During my time there, I knew of at least two pregnant women who died from complications from chicken pox. One died of varicella pneumonia and the other died of varicella menengitis. Pregnancy tends to down regulate the immune system to protect the pregnancy from being rejected by the mother's immune system, which makes chicken pox much more dangerous to pregnant women. This was about ten years before varicella vaccination became available.

Ugh. Got shingles when I was 27. Mine spiraled from my spine and wrapped around my right leg to my inner thigh almost down to my knee. Happened to me when I was in the most stressful time of my life-deployed, uncertain about my future, having early marriage struggles, and fighting to keep my career. Likely what triggered it for me according to some doctors.

wow i remember being little and being told that having chickenpox young helps prevent shingles later, i didn't realise it was literally the dormant chickenpox that caused it.

Just before all coronavirus broke out I caught chickenpox off my young son, not realizing I'd never had it as a child. Worst thing ever, the itching was beyond words. My lad shrugged it off after a few days but, man the itching was so bad i couldn't sleep, eat, or anything. Months afterwards I'm still covered in marks everywhere even tho i didn't scratch at it. Do you have any info on VZV and Bell's Palsy? I had an attack of what I'm informed was VZV related Palsy last October in the right side of my face. I got treated with Prednisolone (a steroid) but the hospital wouldn't prescribe any antivirals. It mostly got better, but I still have a little trouble with the corner of the mouth and the eye area. It's been getting worse again lately, and I'm on another round of Prednisolone.

Had chickenpox as a kid. I've had two shingles flair-ups - one to the torso, the other to the face. During the second flair up, the doctor told me I was lucky not to lose my vision. Im 33 and live a very healthy and active lifestyle. I got shingles recently. I wouldn’t say I was stressed. I know when I m stressed and anxious however my lifestyle definitely changed which I think triggered my immune system to weaken.

I had shingles, but just a little patch about a share inch in size which didn't hurt at all. Not to belittle anyone elses experience, I've seen two other people have it and it seemed awful, but I have a weirdly high pain threshold and often seem to either avoid illness or be asymptomatic.

I had a wicked case of shingles about a month after my 50th birthday. I had vesicles that were so deep that you could see rib muscles through them. I normally don’t scar badly, not with these things. Everywhere I had vesicles there are pitted scars. The worst part is that I have postherpetic neuralgia and hurt worse today than I did at any time during the outbreak. Get the Shingrix vaccine. She said it is still possible to have been exposed to chicken pox as a kid without developing a full blown case, or perhaps a minor one that got written off as a rash and forgotten. This would leave me vulnerable to shingles which I have heard can be excruciatingly painful. So, I decided to err on the side of caution.

Not always. Most upon catching it do not get it again. Yet having caught Chickenpox = they are not also at risk for Shingles at some point. Yet with immunology your future susceptibility also depends upon level of exposure.
In other words if you only end up with a "mild" case of Chickenpox then subsequent antibody generation might not be a strong as with a more severe case and thus it is possible with enough exposure you become reinfected. As with most things = it depends on the conditions.
p.s. - as you age your ability to fight off infection wanes as your body develops other health issues. So if you got it again at 40 it might be due to above - or you were exposed and instead of developing Shingles you progressed to Chickenpox again.
