I recently moved to a big military town and my first day here my whole apartment started rumbling and I stepped outside onto my patio and three chinook helicopters flying in formation flew overhead. It was exhilarating lol. The only thing that can come close to the intense sound of raw power the chinook produces is the MH-53 which is also a beast in its own right.

I flew C model and Super C model Chinooks in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971. This was done very differently than the thousands of sorties I flew during that year. Our flight engineer, crew chief and door gunner were just as important as the pilots in picking up a load and setting it down exactly where it was needed by the people on the ground. The Chinook never let me down.

That aerial shot of the Chinook hovering over the trailer as the guys hook it up really impresses upon you (or at least on me) the incredible technology that is a helicopter. Through human creativity and innovation, we've created the ability to take a 12 ton piece of metal and suspend it in midair, hundreds of feet up, stationary, without any external support, by just moving air around. I love helicopters and I understand how they work, but that image really drives home just how incredible that creation is.

I did a lot of volunteer work with the fraternity of the desert bighorn sheep in Nevada, we used helicopters all the time to move our building materials & work crews up to locations high in the mountains. This job reminds me of so many of the equipment and material lifts that I worked on.
We built water collection projects for the collection of rain water & used walk in guzzler for all of the wild animals out there in this desert. Watching this lift brings back alot of memories of working around helicopters. Nice job Heavy-D

It always boggles my mind how those two turbines on the chinook, looking so damn tiny and pathetic, can power that huge beast and also make it a heavy lifter and one of the fastest helicopters ever made also. Pretty impressive.

Think 10,000SHP @ the engine total input..@ about 5,000 RPM.. then up the torque by 28:1 gearing .. (approximately)..
      Air crushing torque!

Yeah, on a cold day like that, those helicopters do have a lot of lift, but if you want a proper light helicopter, you need a Hughes OH-6.
This is a great video for remembering. I was responsible for training and running a recovery crew; we personally retrieved about 24 OH-6's (using our best Hueys) from mountain ravines, etc. Then flew OH-6s myself for the next 6 months or so. A most amazing helicopter.

There is nothing more fun that being on the rigger team of a sling load mission. Having the opportunity while on Active duty I always loved working with and riding in the helo's. Standing on a connex with a Chinook literally hovering 1-2 feet about your head (sometimes closer) while hooking the sling. AMAZING, would love to do it again one day.

I lived right next to the Aurora Airport in Aurora, Oregon, and we had upwards of 8 red and white chinook helicopters for Columbia Helicopters, which were primarily used for timber and fighting wildfires/forest fires. Also, my cousin was a chinook helicopter mechanic in the army over in the war in Iraq and in Afghanistan in the early 2000's, he said when it came into him, they looked like swiss cheese from all the bullet holes. I never knew they were that rare to see in person, but they were loud whenever they took off or flew over, everyone knew. and now I live near the airport in Salem, OR, and they have the national guard posted here, and there are more chinooks here haha

Great video! That chinook is an exciting machine. Hey thanks for addressing the Hans/ Alan thing. Maybe it’s been editing, but some comments left an impression Hans may have had an issue with Alan. I love them both. They both work their asses off. In different ways. But both are critic components to these awesome videos. So great to learn there is no issue. Peace and Aloha from Kauai 💕

Seing and hearing Chinooks in action always gives me goosebumps. Been up in one a couple of times and what a experience. The brutal power, the noise, vibration, smell. etc. Open door and cargo ramp and a 800 gallon extra fuel tank strapped down next to me in one of the flights took it to another level.

Every time I watch one of Dave's vlogs i learn something new. His crew is so fortunate. The jobs they do are always different with different challenges, so they are always picking up new skills as they get the job done. Dave's an awesome feller and I'm sure great to work for. They travel to awesome places every few days it seems. All the equipment they get to use for work purposes are amazing machines I'd kill to use for fun. I don't know a single person that wouldnt pay to be on Dave's crew . Imagine all the skills and experience they are getting. PRICELESS! Tanks for another awesome vlog.

I've never told a RUclipsr thank you for any videos before, but that's changing immediately. I would like to sincerely thank you for one of the most epic videos that I've ever watched. The execution was flawless and the lift was done SAFELY. The entire team took this evolution very seriously and understood the danger involved. My hats off to you gentlemen and continue to look forward for new video notifications!!!! Bravo Zulu 👏

I had the opportunity to help the national guard with fixing a break in our creek here in California. 4:30pm the CHINOOK landed and I was able to orchestrate and help the airman shackle up huge bags of dirt they were using to fix the break. Hearing and seeing the CHINOOK come in was epic. Being able to help them was one for the books!
Edit: the airman I was helping was the crew that saved 200 ppl during the creek fire that were trapped in the lake. Again it was the coolest opportunity I’ve ever had!

Great video, and I remember being in the Army Doing Sling loads under the helicopter in the early 90s... surprised you didn't have to ground the copter or sling line. Those blade generate a lot of static electricity that at night looks like little lightning coming off the blades.
