      Love your videos brother even if I don't watch them most of the time I do but some ate hard to watch like when you give away vehicles. Mostly cause I'm disabled and need a vehicle to pull my travel which is going to crumble away into nothing cause I can't pull it anywhere

      Umm brah. Unless you have like a foot of solid ice on those blades, they may droop but they won't break. BTW, it's technically impossible to get a foot of ice on blades unless you have the helicopter that you very stupidly store to the lee side of a building so the snow and ice all pile up in gigantic 15-foot piles. In most situations, only a certain amount of ice and snow can build up before the freezing rain just flows off the blade or the not very snow will fall off the blades because they move a lot. BTW, you obviously are trying to make content I guess?

      You make it sounds reeeellly expensive like each blade is 100k each? The set of 4 might be 100k, brand new if they're super fancy ones which I somewhat doubt your old helicopter uses. I don't guess, I know you didn't buy that copter brand new because it's probably older than you are.

    From a Canadian Heli pilot to another pilot. Best thing for deicing is warm windshield washer fluid in a sprayer it will not refreeze. Please don’t ever take a tiger torch to your blades the heat will make them delaminate. Fly safe

      @@stanwooddave9758 one option that could have been used is that blade socks could have placed before leaving on Christmas day (or what ever it was when they fled the cabin). I agree, the use of the propane torch seems at cross purposes to the keeping the blades happy. Kudos to him though, he made it home with no issues.

      Exactly! I was thinking the whole time why don’t they use some de-icing liquid in a pump sprayer. It would have taken less time and been way less risky.

    I am an aircraft deicing technician up here in Ottawa, Canada and Type 1 deicing fluid will clean that ice and snow off very quickly with no damage to your equipment. I have deiced a lot of Dash 8 props and not sure the pilot would like to see us come out with a blow torch...unique idea.
    PS, -35C/-31F here right now, that would make Ottawa the coldest capital city on the planet.

      yeah the blow torch was scaring me too.. I have seen a chopper with plastic 1/2 tubular sleeves that were fitted if it was parked in the snow for any length of time..personally I have a much better management plan..Don't go anywhere theres snow..

    Hey Dave!!!!... you need to get some blade sleeves for the next time you're going to be in freezing weather!!
    Worked for an air medical company, and our heli always had the sleeves on board during the winter months just in case the crew ran into inclement non-flyable weather..
    Crew could set her down, put the sleeves on the blades and when weather cleared, they could remove the sleeves and head back to the hanger..
    !!!!STAY FROSTY!!!!

    We have this stuff called "Winter windshield washer" here in 🇨🇦. You made this job way harder than it could have been. Take the windshield washer, warm it up, spray it on, wait, watch ice fall off, fly away. 12°F/-11°C is about our daytime high this Jan and so far it has been a mild winter. If going to fly in winter get some blade socks!
    Was fun to watch Americans working to hard though! 🧐 🙂🙃

    Nice video! As a former helicopter engineer in the German Navy I really appreciate you left the "Balkenkreuz" on the tail cone. I love that some of the German Army BO 105 are still in flying condition and that you take good care of your nice little helicopter! Best wishes to you and your team.

    As someone who lives in Cache Valley, it was nice seeing the aerial video of the mountains in our area. Gotta love the mountains around Bear Lake. Glad you explained about the new helicopter. I was curious why it was black instead of red.

    Don't know if you know this but when your skids are buried in snow or sand bring the collective up to take off power then push the anti torque pedals left and right a few times so there is less coverage of the substance on the skids. If one skid pops out sooner than the other it may trip the helicopter on its side.

    Good recovery in the ARMY we used blade covers and they were made local at a Boat Cover Shop. We also had a cover for the Front Windshield. Took about 10 minutes to cover things up with 2 people. We did it in the Field when it was snowing covered up everything and brushed the rest off. We started a Fab and everyone wanted a set.

      Yeah, we had blade covers for the 500C & D helicopters we used in SE Alaska. Always assumed they were supplied by Hughes, maybe y'all made them. Seems like the best deal if you don't have a hangar or other cover.

    Best and easiest way to defrost anything that’s parked outside, like cars, trucks or the occasional helicopter, is a large quick-up tent placed over the vehicle and a industrial propane heater.
    You’ll only need it to get to about 10-15 degrees Celsius inside and let it sit in there melting for a couple hours while you sit and drink coffee.
    But that wouldn’t look that good on YT😄

    If you guys haven't figured it out yet, the turbine (hot section) is most likely cooked from all the hot starts trying to get it to run. It was most likely used up before that which is why you couldn't get rpms out of it. So, if the pressure ratio (EPR) doesn't get high enough, it probably cuts it off. That's my best guess.

      He probably needs to shake it. It sounds stupid, but when they get halfway spooled up like that and start to fail, we rock them back and forth as hard as we can and they fire right up EVERY SINGLE time. Ours are on tires though so they have some give.
      There's too much fuel getting to it to be hot starting. There's no reason to suspect the turbine is toast I don't think. An AGE dude could probably tell you what's wrong with it no problem.

    A old MA-1A. Used to start jet engines but modified to use as a snow remover/anti-ice tool. First used by the air force in the late 70's.

    My motto used to be, "He who dies with the most toys wins". The problem was that I found that the more I have - the more I have to worry about. And the more expensive the toys are, the more responsibility I had to keep them well-maintained, whether I'm using them every day, once a month or once a year...otherwise they are quickly worth nothing. So downsizing was actually a relief - and a lot less work! It IS possible to have 'too much stuff', but I'm not sure HeavyD would agree with me. In fact, he seems to handle the responsibility like a boss! I mean, who else would buy an actual BLACKHAWK HELICOPTER???

    I used to use a similar APU on the flightline when I was in the Air Force. It was called a -60(dash sixty) It had a T-37 engine in it. We used it for ground electrical power and ram air to start the F-4. The red lines on the side are there to keep you out of the plane of rotation for the turbine blades . You're not supposed to stand in front of those lines as that's where the blades will come through if the turbine comes apart.

    I’m obsessed with your helicopter vids…. Wish I could afford the 50k costs of obtaining a helicopter pilot license to actually fly one much yet ride in one…. I take my son up too the local emergency room parking lot at hospital where you can stand like 20 feet when approaching or leaving pad… Mainly do it for myself cuz it’s a dope experience especially when the pilot shows off for you and hovers for a bit with little pedal pressure and mainly rotor torque then hits ya full blast with rotor wash leaving knocking my 14 year old son to fall over hahah

      its not 50k its 10k for a standard pilots license and can have an addition few thousand added if you get ifr certified(its like an endorsment on your cdl)

      @@TylerDuysen All due respect, but a Rotorwing License is FAR more expensive than a Fixed Wing License. Current prices in my area just for a Fixed Wing Private Pilot License is $12k and a Rotorwing License is $22k. Now that you have a Private Pilot License, you need to go fly and build hours. 150 hours are the Minimum requirement to get a Commercial License, this is when you can start to make money or get paid to fly people around. THEN depending on which Part of the FAR regulations you are flying under Instrument requirements change and therefor Costs change, Figure at least another $20k for an Instrument Rating. Currency requirements - you must fly a minimum number of Takeoffs and Landings in a 90 day period of time, 3 Full stop TO and L. Now I ask you, if a person Only does the Minimum to be Current, would you fly with them? Not Sure I Would. Good Luck, Have Fun, Be Safe.

      Some guy from Utah just crashed an R-44 here in Sevier County Tennessee, killed his business partner and was forbidden to fly by a federal judge because he was being charged with conning people that he was a flight instructor and was not! I can't remember his name. This happened the day before new years eve, last Thursday! He was running a place in Utah called lift ! Guys name is Matthew Jones! Claimed to be be a CFL but was not!

    Thanks for your earlier reply tomy glycol question. I heard there are light weight blade covers you can also use that canthen be removed along with the ice/snow. Might be worth looking into since you are in a cold climate. Cheers

    I run GSE Maintenance for an FBO in FBX, AK. I have Aircraft Deicer Trucks. What you needed to clear this type of ice off is Type IV Deice Fluid, it's called Anti Ice Fluid. It has to be heated as well but not as much as Type Glycol Deicer Fluid. It's green and looks like dragon piss. I also invoke the use of Sthil BR 600 Back Pack Blowers when an aircraft has been sitting and is in a condition such as your helicopter was.
    You turbine deicer most likely has a Murphy Switch Oil Pressure Engine Killer that Needs to be depressed until you can proper RPM & Pressure when starting most industrial compressors have them as well. You also may need a fuel heater in your burner chamber they are about a foot long and pricey

    I was feeling a little anxiety with the start up on the chopper - any ice on those blades would have put those blades completely out of balance and get nasty resonance up that would could be catastrophic! Good work great video!

    I'm a Geotech/Environmental driller in Alberta, Canada , i fly in helicopters year round and even at -30 Celcius.
    Pilots use ''Diapers'' as they call em , it slides on the blades and covers the engine bay once were back at camp overnight, that would of saved you a lot of time!
    It also takes absolutely no room and they usually store it under the passengers seat in the back, pretty much 4 sleeves for the blades and a 5 ft wide dome malleable material with four holes for the rotor.

    Love your content and have worked on many helicopters. Familiar with the Herman Nelson heaters. I think yours was similar. A big tarp and a propane heater for an hour or couple hours would have maybe been a better choice than actually using a Tiger Torch on the rotor blades. Glad it worked for you and made it safely home.

    The coolest thing EVER is finding out my client that I detail his vehicles. Sold Heavy D his helicopter. I finished up all his collector porsches and he tells me as im in my diesel truck " do you like diesel trucks?" "I'm like yeah they're cool " "Idk if you watch youtube but we sold this guy heavy d his helicopter, very nice guy" was blown away by that lol.

    aviation / aerospace consumables are all given code numbers / batch numbers, in case of accident, faults can be tracked back to the original steel used to make them

    Hey Dave! Professional Rotary pilot in training myself out here in Hawaii, always loved your old 105, and love the new one! Saw it on av buyer not to long ago, I look at 105’s for sale almost daily haha hopefully I get the chance to fly one one day. Congrats on the second helicopter can’t wait to see what you do with this beast! Ps. Have you ever thought about doing a super-lifter conversion? I think a company in Canada still has the full conversion kit for the 105LS-3A! Heard they’re incredible with the new C28’s and main/tail rotor blade set-up. Cheers! 🤙🏽

    Definitely the hardest way to do it. But live and learn.
    We have recovered a few dozen birds and below is how we did cold weather.
    We use simple lawn sprayers with windshield de icer fluid down to about -10. Get a good 50/50 Ethanol.
    We also use large tarps and genset with some heat trace. Wrap each blade, put a 1/2 gap between the trace and blade and let sit for 2 hours. Done.

      I will say military equipment is never working right but it being very old military equipment is even more prone to break lol the agpus we have now are just a much better version of this.. props on getting it done ✅

    (10 mins in) Jet engines Suck, Squeeze, Bang and Blow. Another approach at De-Ice, get a Surplus Parachute.. Cover the aircraft and get some poles with spreader bars and use one of those "Hot Dog" (shaped) Heaters to blow hot air into / under the Parachute . If you can find a heater with a duct to get under that chute, so much the better. ITs how we did Maintenance in Alaska on helicopters when I was out there during my Army Helo days. We used "Herman Nelsons" but I'm sure you can come up with something.

    glad it worked out sometimes things that have sat in the cold don't always work like they should but good job to you and your team you could have used an exhaust hose off the tail pipe of your side x side to thaw stuff out too.

      @@lutomson3496 I don't think he did it for a video. I think some weather blew in and he couldn't fly it out. Incase you don't know, weather in them mountains comes and goes without warning and helicopters don't do well in high winds cold and snow in mountainous terrain. None of his videos are clickbait either. Everything he posts for titles are exactly what the video is about. I don't know if you know what clickbait is but it's when someone shows a thumbnail and/or a title that has nothing to do with the video...

    Just a question> Are you using 24V instead of a 12 volt Car batt?
    I may be wrong but most turbines work on 24 V.

    As an aircraft mechanic it literally makes me get a knot in my stomach seeing you use a woodburning torch on the blades. It looked like you kept it a decent distance back and its probably okay, but it sure made me nervous...even though obviously you made it back to upload.

    During heli ski we just put covers on the blades windscreen tail boom and tail rotor. Also have block heaters on main rotor transmission tr gear box hyds and oil tanks and battery. Really hard on those things to be started in the extreme cold. Another thing you can do to get it off the windscreen is put a small personal heater in the cockpit.
    If you do get ice. They make glycol de icing solutions

      Maybe you already have but if you are flying in those conditions you might consider getting some deep snow and cold weather training? Bunch of heli ski pilots could show you the ropes! I think there are some helis up in powder birds right now near Utah. You might be able to sneak on with them!

    Low tech bush fix(as it is in the bush) tarp over the blades like a tent and a propane heater beneath to let the heat rise up under the tarp and thaw the ice.

    You can also cover the entire helicopter with the parachute and put a cannon-type heater inside the parachute so you heat the entire area and melt the ice and snow

    The air friction from the rotor spin has a nice drying effect too. Especially on the blades themselves.

    Working with similar aircraft for six years, you can't imagine the cringe factor which hit me when you "worked" on those blades. Next time carry your blade covers with the bird.

      Same here. Work on ch-53s and it was hard to watch but at the same time when ever I see his helicopter videos I can tell his attitude changes. He gets way more serious with safety and doesn’t really push it. Glad to see that honestly. Helicopters you just can’t mess around with.

    It's more about the "show" than making sure you can take proper care of equipment like leaving you helicopter out, at risk over time in a very hostile environment, but it is all about the "show"

    What you need is an insulated tarp and a Herman Nelson
    That is what we used in Canada's frozen north equipment does not like to start at 40 below

    Make sure you stay out of the plane of rotation on that unit. That turbine wheel can be deadly. It should be marked with two red lines on all sides of the unit. The kill zone is between the two lines.
    Also DO NOT have the bleed air hose hooked up to it or have it stretched out straight. That thing can whip around and kill anyone in it's reach.
    I'm an Air Force vet and my job was AGE. I believe they call it ground power now days.
    They can run on JP4 fuel or diesel. Not sure on the grade on the diesel fuel. Only remember the JP4 cause that's what we used on just about everything back in the day.

      Jp-4 or JP-8 jet fuel. Worked with those things for 13 years in the Navy jet fuel is better for them in cold weather.

    The gas-turbine engine in the de-icer was used in quite a few peaces of equipment. I worked on five different models when I was in the air force years ago. Could be kind of tricky at times. Good luck getting it going.

    Back in the late 80's during a Bearing Sea Patrol on a Coast Guard Cutter, our Helo became grounded due to a Chip Light. It was strapped to the flight deck, and one of the worst storms I had ever been in while onboard hit. They used these support poles on the rotor tips to keep the blades from breaking. Well, one of the poles failed and ended up stabbing a hole right through the blade tip. Luckily, there was a spare set at the Air station in Kodiak. We pulled in the Air Crew swapped the blades, fixed the problem with the Chip Light and off we went. Those blades are also a balanced set, so they get changed out in pairs, or our case Quads.

    I’m totally blown away with your helicopter. I have no more words to describe how awesome everything that you do. It would be like having a really nice boat if you are out here in the pacific. Imagine if I had a monster freedom boat. 😂
    I’ll definitely be island hoping. One thing thou that I would love to have is a battery pack like yours for typhoon seasons out here.
