Last Christmas I made my porch sign by using the backing from a piece of Cricut smart vinyl-permanent instead of Cricut mats taped together…. I ran a trial with dollar tree vinyl (so I didn’t waste much money if it failed 🤷🏼♀️) it worked 😃
@@lisahillard7211 I just used spray glue, let it dry and it made it a little tacky (not as tacky as a mat, but good enough it stayed in place) I was just experimenting but it worked 🤷🏼♀️
Great trick you shared, the signs look perfect. However, your sense of humor was on point & one of the reasons I love watching you work. Thank you for the laughter! 😂😂😂
Great Hack...Thank you for my lunch time laughter. I am so glad you don't edit out the not so perfect parts. We all struggle sometimes, but we persevere....💗💗💗
This is a great idea. I saw a guy using the vinyl without a mat and just put the paper towels cardboard tubes under it to support it while making his sign. It worked great.
Watching on reply. My eyes are full of tears from laughing so much. Don't you just hate it when your Cricut gets mad? Michael, your expressions and reactions are precious.
I don't know why someone doesn't just release a special adhesive backing (That can be cut to what ever length desired) that can hold normal vinyl. Sure you lose the extra vinyl on the sides and top, but it could be a happy medium.
In my opinion… this way is sooooo much more worth it than buying the smart vinyl OR slicing and piecing the sections to get her. I love it!!!! Thanks for showing this technique “hack”🤣🤣🤣🫶🫶
I have… many, many times. 😆 They’ve been investigating it, but since it’s a new width of vinyl (13”) they would have to change how the vinyl is manufactured and that would apparently be VERY expensive 😅
Thank you for sharing this. You gave some really good advice. I sell my crafts and the thing I took was crafting vinyl lasts outside for insane amount of years if placed on a smooth surface. Thank you so much. I live in Western Kentucky. It gets unbearable heat here and humidity is awful.
Arizona checking in 😁 I wish you would start doing education videos for the Silouette Cameo, I have the Plus. I bought it cause I wanted the larger cutting space…tutorials are far and few between 🥴. I also have a Cricut Maker
I have a Brother SNC not a Cricut - but I'm guessing the Cricut smart vinyl has a reg mark or design on the back that the machine sees? If so, can't you copy that in some way onto the vinyl you want to use?
This is awesome - I've seen other hacks where you trim down the vinyl and put it through the Cricut Maker 3 without a mat, but I'm liking this idea more - less chance of the vinyl shifting in the machine. I have a larger than mat decal to make for my sister's caravan - I think I'll be going with your method. Wish me luck!
Your reaction to the first cut had me laughing so hard. You are too much and us crafters love it! Nice job tricking cricut to cut that long without cricut vinyl. And I am with you 100% cricut vinyl sucks! Lol
Can I just thank you so much for this! I thank you the bravery you had and the laughter you gave us! But, question. I have smart vinyl I do not want to waste. I’m a complete vinyl 143 customer, but what transfer tape can I get the smart vinyl off their mat? I love Vinyl 143!!
Another RUclips crafter found you can trim one edge to make smart vinyl fit regular Cricut and cut without a mat. It worked for them. I think you have to trim 1/12 inch or so. Just trim it to be the same size as the mat, edge to edge. Use a trimmer. They even tried regular vinyl (had to cut it so it was long enough and the original width became the length) and as long as the rollers can grab the edges, it will cut. You still have waste from the margins, but you can cut without a mat on a regular cricut if you need to.
Your stress level! OMG! You are adorable! ;-) I don't have a cricut 3, but just wanted to watch anyway! I have the Air 2 and when it dies, I'm going with the Solo that appears to play well with others! ;-)
I for got I do resin, pull chain art, painting, cricket vinyl in various ways, and wood working projects. I don't try to copy others as I like to be unique. But I show others how to do my projects. I think that is why I don't sell much.:-)
So I use a pazzles machine, not a cricut and you can just change your page size to as long as you want and tape mats together as you did and it works perfectly. Not sure if in the cricut software you can do the same
Thanks so much for doing this video I absolutely HATE Cricut’s Smart vinyl. I actually found some offbrand smart vinyl on Amazon for the Joy and it works great I just wish there were more colors it only comes in black and white.
Everything is Halloween which is my birthday but not celebrated in Australia. It is okay, I am still learning new things from how you do them. Thank you.
Replay squad! I was worried about you and your machine! Things got a little tense! 😰 Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that Morgan accidentally threw the first attempt away. Then, you were able to start fresh! Lucky you for living so close to 143 Vinyl. 😁
Maybe that could be 143's next project (wink, wink, hint, hint) is to create somethin a lil thicker kind of like smart vinyl for us to use when we want to make longer cuts.. 143's vinyl is awesome and once u use that it's hard to use anything else.
Ok, I'm confused..... how did you get your explore to cut longer than 24"? Mine limits me to that as the longest cut. It's super frustrating because I make banners for car windshields from time to time. Please help.
I'll definitely have to try this! I just got a roll from 143vinyl that's 24" wide figuring I'd just cut it down to 13" wide to make long cuts then using the excess 11" for smaller cuts. Any idea if 143vinyl has any future plans of making their vinyl 13" wide?
Perfect timing. I have a 30" long cut to do. Guess what I'm going to be doing? 😁 I wonder if I can lower the design on the make it screens so I don't have to put the vinyl all the way to the edge and tape it?
I put the starting edge at the 2" mark, and the cut was just inside the sticky part of the mat. You will have to tell design space to make the cut longer to move the design, but it works. I also only put the masking tape on the back side, and put the little hanger holes so they were both on the outside (no cuts going over them)
It's called experimenting 🤩, trial n error that's how we learn 😉. I'm visually impaired and love to try n craft it helps keep my mind clear so I do a lot of experimenting trying to find easy ways and equipment etc to help make it doable for me. I have lots of trials n errors in it lol. I love watching you craft because you make mistake or boo boos n whew it's nice to know I'm not the only one in this wild world of crafting that makes boo boos lol.
My colour palate on my cricut design space has disappeared. It's actually still there, only invisible, ( I hope that makes sense) has anyone else come across this before? And is there a simple fix to bring it back?

How did you get the new vinyl to stick to the old backing sheet?
@@lisahillard7211 I just used spray glue, let it dry and it made it a little tacky (not as tacky as a mat, but good enough it stayed in place) I was just experimenting but it worked 🤷🏼♀️

They are THE BEST 🤣🥳

I agree with you about the Smart vinyl! Its so thick and almost cumbersome!!
In my opinion… this way is sooooo much more worth it than buying the smart vinyl OR slicing and piecing the sections to get her. I love it!!!! Thanks for showing this technique “hack”🤣🤣🤣🫶🫶
So glad you found it useful! 🤩
Ask Starcraft to make their own smart vinyl. All they really need to do is put a thicker backing.
I have… many, many times. 😆 They’ve been investigating it, but since it’s a new width of vinyl (13”) they would have to change how the vinyl is manufactured and that would apparently be VERY expensive 😅
But worth the money
To be able to not use a mat in general would make it worth it
@@mrcraftypants does it have to be 13in?
This is exactly what my brain went to for a hack on large cuts on better vinyl! So happy you did this and it worked! Thx!
I'm glad that this worked out the second time around.
Your signs look fantastic!
Thank you so much, Lisa! 😃
You made me laugh out loud.
I like that you show true process, including mistakes
You are just a genius! I am definitely going to try this! Thanks Michael!!
You can change your “template” to a guide in Design Space. Under the Cut pull down choose guide.
Another reason why I love my silhouette cameo, no mat needed for long cuts. Their machine allows you to move rollers

I do have the Circut machine but my choice is to use the silhouette cameo! You don’t have to go through all of this.

Replay, the cost of cricut smart vinyl alone is worth using this hack. Oh and by the way, your facial expressions were priceless Thank you 😄Linda
This video made me laugh out loud! What a great hack! Thanks for sharing.
I wanted to give a hug on day one…great job persevering

This is a genius idea! I have been wanting to make signs and not have to always buy the smart vinyl or the longer Mat.
These signs are adorable and you are hysterical! Where did you get your signs?!
I put removable black cricut brand vinyl on a wood blank sign from hobby lobby and it has been outside for 2 years now
I for got I do resin, pull chain art, painting, cricket vinyl in various ways, and wood working projects. I don't try to copy others as I like to be unique. But I show others how to do my projects. I think that is why I don't sell much.:-)

Awesome! 👍Thanks for sharing as always! 🥰
I have been missing the lives. I'm so glad that I can see the replay
Ohmygoodness you have me laughing hysterically!! I love your facial expressions
That is so awesome 💕 it will make cutting for signs so much quicker.
I much rather do it this way! Thank you!!
OMG I love you so much! I literally have not laughed that hard in a while. “Crap on a stick!” You’re the best lol!! 🤣🤣
Game Changer!!!!! Love your work :)
Very interesting hack...gr8 video as always!!! Til next tyme...keep those cre8ive juices abrewing!!!

Okay, I NEED to know where you're getting your signs...I have an idea of what your response will be, but please let us know.
could you not use wider vinyl cut to the 13 inch width like the smart vinyl is as the only difference i see is the extra width
Great idea! Can this hack work with Explore Air 2? The Joy? Tempted to try it but not when my Charlee is here! Thanks Michael for the great video!
This was awesome. Do you need to seal your sign after you paint it before laying vinyl?
This is a great question! I just uploaded a short to this channel with the answer for you! 😃

I have a hard time getting smart vinyl off the backing, regular transfer doesn’t work, strong is too much

Love your videos the larger length is really great idea I really don’t like Cricut vinyl
Do you have an update on the situation of someone ripping off your designs?
I'll definitely have to try this! I just got a roll from 143vinyl that's 24" wide figuring I'd just cut it down to 13" wide to make long cuts then using the excess 11" for smaller cuts. Any idea if 143vinyl has any future plans of making their vinyl 13" wide?

I have a silhouette mat with my cricut but it didn’t work. Any suggestions?
I love watching your videos. What is the best color printer to use for vinyl paper that's inexpensive?
What a great idea!
Awesome Hack!!
You can cut that roll without a mat if you have a silhouette cameo 4!
I think its worth it, especially if you already have the regular vinyl.
Beautiful

Good morning
Has anyone tried cutting Vvivid xpoo vinyl
With a Cricut
What setting worked best?
Thank you
Have a great day
Omg hilarious 😆 I needed that laugh . Your awesome 🤩
Michael did you know that Teckwrap makes smart vinyl too? 😀
can you cut it without a mat on light setting, taking into account the lighter backing?

What kind of transfer tape did you use? It looked so easy. Thank you.
Yes, I was wondering the same thing.
You need Brother scan n cut lol, it has a roller and will cut any length.
My maker gives me an error when I do this tell me to adjust the measurements
Great job!
We aren’t even halfway through August yet! Put those Halloween decorations away! Lol
LOL! They’re off of the porch… for now 😂
What a great idea 👍👍👍
stick the mat in backwards instead to have the hole away from cutting edge
Yes I have done this and it work's
I think as long as you click on smart vinyl as your material used, you won’t need any kind of mat. It will assume you have one.
This reminds me of the Weasley car in Harry Potter. The way it spat out the last of the vinyl 😂
LOL! Yesss! 😂🤣
