  • This is a popular topic right now in CrossFit.
    We ask very simple things.
    1.Tell us where we are going.
    2. Enforce how you've told us to get there.
    Tia Clair Toomey is setting the sport back. Not driving it forward like the champions before her.
    It is not so black and white anymore. This is being seen widely through the lense of Open Workout 22.2.
    Standards are thown out the window and integrity is lost.
    Before you say anything negative in the comments be sure you've watched the fricken video. I believe it's my most entertaining to date.
    If you like the video PLEASE SHARE it. Lets burn this MF to the ground. From the ashes we can start our ascent back to where we were.

    I miss the days when the elites actually set the standard and didn't just try to sneak their way around it.
    I miss the days when moving well actually mattered.
    I miss the days when Crossfit actually stood for something.
    I miss the days when it wasn't all about the money.
    I miss the days when people would ACTUALLY no rep each other.(Lookin at you shane)
    The crossfit world has gone soft.
    We were en route to become an actual sport it seemed. But now, when we dont even uphold our own standards of what our version of a "movement" is... we most certainly are lost.

    The standards for 22.2 say the workout begins with barbell on ground. And separately it says a rep is created when the athletes hip and knees reach full extension and their head and shoulders are behind the bar.
    It says nothing about plates leaving the floor at the same time.
    You can argue for a more strict standard, but Tia doesnt seem to be breaking the rules.
    It's a competition, anything they want to try within the standard to get an edge is fair game. May work, may not. Looks like weird body mechanics that would result in a potentially injury to me, but if its within the standard, again, it's not cheating.

    • @hillerfit

      You are currently stretch as far as I would need to be in order to say she is cheating though, no?

    • @BernhardKohli
      @BernhardKohli 2 года назад

      Does she have the capacity? Yes. Are those deadlifts borderline? Yes. Is it a major deal? Is it because she is trying to cheat or is this riding the line between speed and clean technique? Personally, I just think it's the latter. Give a second penalty for the reps that look too sloppy and be done with it - she still belongs at the Games and will qualify comfortably. Quarterfinals technique will be cleaner, I bet, as the risk is higher.

    • @tighecrovetti2844
      @tighecrovetti2844 2 года назад +6

      Andrew addressed this. If you walked up to a "barbell on the ground," are both plates on the ground at the same time or not? 'Nuff said? Now, the only way that one side would be up off the ground is if the athlete picked up one side. Guess what: the rep is then IN PROGRESS, not "at the start." So, for the very first rep, obviously, the bar starts "on the ground" properly, because it has to, and when she lifts it up to extension, she's completed one rep. That's it. One rep over. Now, how the bar gets back to the ground is entirely irrelevant. She can drop it, and it can bounce all over the place. She can lower it all the way, then let go. Or she can touch and go. None of those change the rules, the bar has to be returned "to the ground" before she can start her next rep. That means back to both plates being on the ground AT THE SAME TIME, just like it was for the very first rep, because, like we agreed, that's what "on the ground" means. So, yes, she is absolutely not adhering to the rules and violating the movement standard.
      This excuse is like people who deny the issue with muscle-ups and say, "well, the rule doesn't say 'locked out over the rings'...." when it says you have to lock out "in the support position." That phrase "support position" has a meaning, just like "on the ground" has meaning. The people constantly squirrelling in some corner to cut because "it doesn't actually say blah blah blah" are exactly why you have rep-cutters and why Crossfit has such a bad reputation outside the sport.

Also, it can be a little difficult to tell from the front or back view (as opposed to a Sideview) but she was completing her deadlifts repetition at the top.

    Reminds me of the clip from one of the docs where Fraser is pushing on Bis about the standards and how the heat before got away with something (dropping barbell from overhead?) and he was like “yeah but they did it so we’re gonna do it” and they “got away” with it and it was fine and allowed within rules and getting an edge within standards. For one - the individual side of crossfit is just that - individual. There's no obligation to support someone based on being from the same country as them. I'm aussie but would like to see someone else win, but to be fair that's largely because I'm not huge on how crossfit has basically been the sport of second place for the last decade.
    I'm not opposed to loose movement standards either, as long as it is the standard. Like how pullups are just chin over bar at top, arms extended at bottom. If the deadlift standard is bar touches ground, stand up straight at the top then it's all good, it's still fair to everyone

    First of all don't be so negative. You said it yourself the open is not important anymore. It has become a place where beginners can try their skills and see if they can go further. Crossfit has become a little more friendly to the average beginner. I believe it's to find that diamond in the rough as they say. Roch said at the beginning he wanted to make it a little more open to all athletes. Which is why he fired Dave. Dave kept wanting to make the workouts really hard. Especially the Open. Also, I believe the rules are either emailed or sent to you. If you watch more of Tia's videos, you'll see either Shane or one of the other coaches talking about the rules for the workout. They don't do videos on the rules anymore. Be more open minded and not so critical. You'll see life in a different way. Hope your business is doing well and that your athletes are successful in all ways possible.

      Having one plate hit the ground before the other minimizes the amount of bouncing. The reason she is doing it is because it lets her drop the weights harder without a bounce being able to help her. It's actually pretty smart but does not give her an unfair advantage, it just allows her to drop the weights faster while being able to pick them up without using a bounce. 🧠

    Thanks for pointing out the importance of standards. I don’t think there would be standards if there are exceptions for certain people. I hope you could judge all crossfit athletes or have your own judges course. I took the judges course and when I am judging an athlete I apply the standards that I learned from the course. I’m in the 55-59 women and reviewed some of the videos after watching your RUclips on “cheating masters” , and you were right, there were too many No Reps to count. I think for CrossFit to keep the seriousness of going to the Games, they have to uphold the importance of standards and keep the athletes accountable. It can still be a fun sport and it can be a long term sport if you maintain proper movements, which are the standards. Thank you for the videos and keep all of Crossfit fit and honest.

    The fact that much of crossfit is for time means this will always be an incentive to cut reps as short as you can get away with. There was an interview with Fraser one time where he said something to the effect of: in a competition if you don't get at least one no-rep, you're doing it wrong.

    • @hillerfit

    • @dgiraffes
      @dgiraffes 2 года назад

      @@hillerfit Not sure. It seems unsustainable for HQ to punish directly (even though it's the right thing to do). Ideally Tia would be punished by her judge (like in normal sports where the local referee makes the decisions without referring to some central board). The video gives easy evidence for judge misbehavior (or incompetence? I guess you can't tell from the video alone) so the judge is disqualified for future workouts. You could really force athletes to be careful by invalidating earlier workouts by the same judge.

    I think CrossFit is two things at the same time - that is there is CrossFit that happens in the gym everyday and coaches who give shit and teach standards and then there is the professional competitive side of CrossFit. Are the professional competitors cheating? Not if they are all doing the same movement in the same manner. Does this put your average CrossFit athlete at a disadvantage if they are doing the proper standard? Probably not. Especially if that person does not dedicate their whole day to the sport. I think CrossFit HQ has made it abundantly clear that these competitive athletes sell the sport and open more affiliates. And affiliates are filled with people just trying to improve their lives. Especially if owners and coaches of those gyms give a shit about their clients. Preaching first and foremost it starts with a proper eating habits and then from there coaching movements that first don’t injure and then ones that push the person levels of fitness they have never achieved ever in their life. So, who really cares if Tia wins at the games, because the real winners are those that get rid of their chronic illness medication and replace it with sweat and a better overall lifestyle. The open is fun to compete against your friends but should not be taken seriously by any average gym goer. They have already won, if they just improved themselves every day, week, month or year.

    • @hillerfit

I've been out of kilter with my deadlifts before due to some postural imbalance and one side hitting the ground before the other is really off-putting and not easier in my experience. I don't put it in the same category as bouncing but I definitely think the shoulders behind the bar is a good one to enforce because it ensures hips are locked out. And don't even start me on the burpee standard because this just encourages flirtation and "well technically" it meets the standard knowing full well that it's taking advantage of the standard. CrossFit is like bodybuilding. Back when it first started those first decades everyone claimed natty. No offense but the elite CrossFit people are not natty at all.
    Look at any of them conspared to a mens classic bodybuilding or mens physique those guys are all saying they’re on gear and the CrossFit people are just as big if not bigger but they claim
    Natty 😂😂😂😂😂😂

    After binge watching close to 30, 40 maybe 50 of your videos, I was curious to see this one. You went there with untouchable Tia. I actually paused to watch this since she's our girl. Maybe not wanting to see her flaws. But I've come to the conclusion that I have no skin in the game. Just a viewer and this is pure entertainment and really don't give a fuck anymore about technical movements, right from wrong, peds or nat. There, I feel better.. I'll just cheerlead the favorites, the pretty girls and the dudes that I can relate too. 🤣👍
