  • She is retired, right?
Which means it is about time I can make one of these, right?
Tia Toomey does what she wants, when she wants to do it. And why shouldn't she, after all it is her life.
From what I heard in relation to her retiring is she through Sean Woodland under the bus. This is not something Tia would have done had you had known her in 2015/2016.
Natty or not is a question I get asked frequently. It is something I have not covered as much recently.
    But, tis the season.
Enjoy, and as always let me hear your thoughts in the comments.

Being ripped and massive at the same time while being natural while keeping world level performance is unheard of . When you get ripped you tend to lose body mass and you get weak and feel like shit , let alone perform at peak performance in a competition.

Great video! And I think it's refreshing to hear from a CF person that can see the problems within. Not so stuck up and don't believe PED even exists in CF because they have "testing".
Anyway traps and shoulder are a big give away in right context. For some reason they grow proportionally bigger than the rest. And there are some research backing this up too.
But for top level athletes that already are near or at their natural max. Making a transformation in a year is not just good diet and harder training, impossible. When you are near your natural max you make very little progress each year no matter how hard you train. To be honest I am not so much curious IF they use but more WHAT they use.
Also she might be a good responder too I mean she crushed the competition and I have a hard time believing the top 5 isn't using PED. And as for the picture in the water Winstrol make sense to use since you get stronger on that without putting on weight.

My only thought is to tread lightly when accusing someone of something so egregious... I can only talk about my experience and my personal transformation over the years. Starting CrossFit at 38 - overweight and out of shape, I've had a SIGNIFICANT transformation leading to three consecutive CrossFit Games Masters Wins... And I'm constantly accused (in comment sections) of using TRT, Steroids, PEDS, Stacks, etc. And I've never touched anything whatsoever. Not during the season. Not during the off season. Nothing. But, people look at my pictures, my abs, my body shape, and rely on those markers as 'clear evidence' that I must have been using something. It's incredibly frustrating. I'm happy to talk with anyone at any time about my experience over the past 8 years.

I think it’s more the idea that she went from already being on top of the CrossFit world getting 2nd place 2 years in a row and then looking significantly different the following years.
Someone at that level has been training for years. It’s not the same as some fat out of shape person who has never worked out finally getting in the gym. You don’t expect a transformation of this extent out of someone who’s already a seasoned lifter. That’s why Chris Bumstead doesn’t show up looking drastically larger year after year. Red skin, especially in the chest, neck, head, arms from high hemoglobin and iron content in the blood is a pretty good marker. Def happened to me when I was on TRT. But that can ebb during workouts as more blood gets dedicated to the muscles. It also goes away for a bit if you donate blood. I rolled over the Tia/PED question in my mind the whole games this year. Great video Hiller, but I'm not completely convinced yet... Your argument is compelling and concise, especially when analyzing her increasing magin of win over the field of competitors. The breakdown of her changed "mindset" or mental toughness is an indicator that I never would have considered, so thank you for taking the time to explain that piece of the puzzle.
However, the "main" part of your argument with consideration toward her phsyique is not enough for me to say that she has used or is on a PED. As many other comments suggest, an individuals body can transform very rapidly. You are comparing a persons physique from a year prior and that is a significant amount of time to gain muscle, especially during Tia's early years in CrossFit. I've personally seen physical changes consistant to what you describe in Tia and I'm not a genetic wonder and only train 5-6 hours per week. I recently took a six day vacation and you'd be shocked if I showed you the before and after photos... six days!
Do a video on Marcus Filly next (I considered his physique to be one of the best in CrossFit)! Watch his steroid breakdown video first, lost of views. Link Below, cheers.

I think the days of following the Crossfit WOD and turning up to compete at the games are long gone. Its a full-time career with decent prize money and sponsorship which in itself encourages people to do things to win. I think people need to accept that the Games level athletes are freakish and it is not possible to handle that kind of volume and recover year after year without some needing some extra help in the off season. I don't think everybody is on PEDs, just the amount that are would probably surprise people. I still enjoy watching the games cause even if someone is on something, it won't do the work for you. Her looking ‘softer’ in the Mayhem pics-definitely could’ve been edited, unless you got any videos from 2018 of her looking softer. Also maybe she was going through a bulk period to which she later cut down? No idea if she has ever bulk/ cut in her life-just a possibility.
I don’t know if her Covid performance can be considered truly dominant cus of again only the 5 people… think of how many different people we saw win events this year and how some of them didn’t even podium at their quarterfinals.
She did say (I think in the 2017 documentary…?) that she saw how negative she was being toward herself in the previous documentary and that’s what changed her attitude.
Do you think if she is/was using-do you think previous training buddy Mat Fraser knows? If he did know, do you think he would tattle, or use it with his new prodigy Mal? Would love to see a Natty on Matty.

It strikes me that there are other data that need to be gathered in order to make an *informed* assessment of an athlete's fitness, whether 'natural' or 'enhanced'. One such datum is workout schedule: what has one done in workouts to reach the level of fitness she or he has? One text I continue to hear about juiced jocks is that they medicate to get shortcuts to fitness or physique. Is this true of Tia? When comparing her workout schedule with other competition, does it seem she takes shortcuts to get where she now is? I've not heard this said about Mal O'Brien--perhaps because of her age, her small size, her newness to the stage, and so on. But perhaps it's also because it is generally admitted that no one works harder than she. Perhaps the same about Froning, although some chatter in his case about being 'enhanced', which I've always doubted. His progression seems pretty natural given the demands he makes on himself and given the testimony of others (another datum). In any case, Andrew, I wonder if folks have noticed Tia slacking off on her workout schedule while remaining on her fitness and physique upgrades.

Its super tough nailing down and learning new things /being flexible/ ect ect. To see how dominant these top 40 athletes are and maybe even the top 100 is insane. I think when Froning was being so dominant it was more of how young the sport was. These movements were so new to the field and no one trained like Rich did. Now these athletes have everything dialed in from sleep to strength training. It is to your point that being so dominant you whoop the fields ass by 200 points to take the W every year. I think everyone hopes this is not true. Only because she seems like an honest and transparent person. Yet, as competitive as they come. This would highly discredit the CrossFit Games...
Mat Fraser seemed adamantly opposed to PEDs in the 2017 "The Redeemed and the Dominant", so any ties made in the comments between Tia and Mat using...that would really suck. Then again Ricky lied straight to the camera in that same documentary.
Greg Glassman(Da man with the Vision) created CrossFit for the general population. The CF Games were not his vision. Defeating Obesity and Diabetes while in a supportive community was his vision.
My own experience; I have witnessed the changes in my own body over the years of playing sports and competition(to a degree). The most shredded I had ever been in my life was AFTER having my second child and having started CrossFitting 3months after giving birth; Less than a year later I was on a comp team at regionals. Major body changes from lanky limby runner, mama llama butt, to then be CrossFit shredded after about 18 months of 6 days a week 3-4 hours a day. Fast forward back to full time work and domestic life...lost the shred. Over the years my body has cycled through phases in relation to my sleep, diet, stress, frequency and INTENSITY of CrossFit.
Did you know within one month a woman will gain and lose an average of 3-5 pounds depending on her menstrual cycle? This is the average! Less or more dependent on overall lifestyle variables and stressors. Even nowadays, at 45 yrs old, when I attack a high intensity track workout or CF Wod, the next morning/day my whole body is leaner. Women can appear/be totally jacked in the upper body but not as much in the lower body, unless extra attention is given to the lower body. Genetics.
I believe that Tia, given her history of athletics and Triathlon Competition(where Shane met her) she very well could naturally cycle through the body phases you highlighted. CrossFit is a different beast in terms of potential for shaping the human body; and the woman's body is a highly malleable subject. I really hope Tia did not take PEDs. That is all.

Hormonal changes and even down to taking hormonal birth control for years and coming off it and different phases of our cycle all have a huge impact on physique. I’m much leaner in my luteal phase than folicular and you do physically feel “softer” at the later stages of your cycle.

Interesting take. I’ve done the body building thing but I did physique. I know that between bikini and physique is muscle. The way we train is different. You don’t think female cross fitters would be bigger than bikini body builders 1: the training is different and 2: in CF heavier weight is being lifted? Just curious on your take. I’m not saying these women aren’t on anything because I’m sure some definitely are.

    • @lotz871
      @lotz871 Год назад +1

@@dhall75608 To your point yes absolutely - some female CrossFitters are bigger than some female bodybuilders but some are not it depends on division. Today the figure women are almost as big physique women. Not sure if you’re competing in a tested league or NPC/IFBB but in IFBB these women are legit big and some of them are much bigger than the crossfitters but after seeing some of these amazing athletes in person in Madison a few weeks back I can see that my assumptions are likely correct. Andrew actually nails many of the key points in this video.
I’m very scientific and observant with how I trained and measure things. I managed to gain close to my genetic potential but no mater what I have done I can’t peak my body over 100lbs of lean mass while maintain a lower than average body fat percentage. I also don’t train like a traditional bodybuilder either - my training is more similar to CrossFit style with high intensity and compound lifting. There is just a genetic limit to what can be achieved. Now I am not saying 100% of everyone is 100% on something but when you look at aesthetics, development, mindset and leanness you can see where the performance enhancers are very prevalent. In my analysis Tia seems like she did all the hard work up front and then added things in, just as Andrew theorized.
Not sure where you competed or how into the industry you have been but as someone with female friends taking PEDs and beating witness to the benefits I just see it as very obvious in CrossFit.

But I started working out in college so I had been working out for years and started lifting heavy when I graduated college. Then I got into CF and my training for my show was fasted cardio in the morning and evenings were my CrossFit class and then to the gym to lift whatever body part I needed for the day. Heavy supersets. But, genetically, I just build muscle easily. The hard part for me is losing the body fat and it took me doing all of that to get it down.

My posing coach is an IFBB figure pro - she looked nothing like these ladies do today. I remember in 2018 when I did the Arnold Amateur and saw the pro Figure ladies compete and I was like WHOA, these ladies are strong and huge! It was incredible. Another indicator would be Erin Stern, long time OG Figure competitor, now competing in IFBB Bikini. Look at how the whole field has shifted, it's nuts and now they have a wellness division and those girls aren't tiny either.
Interesting about your training, I am sure CF helped you build even more muscle and even out your frame. I do everything measured so I heavily rely on DEXA scans for accuate information. Have you ever tried that? I will give you a much better idea of your progress - it's like x-ray vision. I manage to stay lean but it's a balancing act and head to do as a natural athlete. Another struggle natural athletes have when maintaining lean mass is the balance between upper and lower body. For instance, mountain biking and spin are great for my legs but then my upper body suffers and shrinks. If I was enhanced, i wouldn't have such a hard time finding the balance.

I don’t believe she’s on PED’s. You’re looking at photos of a different time in the sport. 2014,15 & 16 is a very different era to now. She was young and a bit fluffier, you could say the same about Annie in the early days. Look at her 2009 photos when she was a teenager compared to now.
The photos of later at Mayhem she’s just put on a bit of weight and doesn’t have the same definition. What you have to realise is she is pretty small so any weight gain is going to take any definition away quickly, in particular for girls, men tend to get away with putting on more weight but keeping more definition. She’s grown into herself more as she’s gotten older and I think you will see the same transition with Haley as she builds more strength. You can already see similar changes with Haley but all these young ones have been doing CrossFit a lot longer than Tia had been when she started in 2014 so it’s not apples to apples.
Don’t forget as well Tia was heavily focused on weight lifting for the Olympics in 2016 and commonwealth games in 2018. A lot of strength training and weight cutting impacts your body composition.
She won almost all the events in 2019 and 2020 because there wasn’t the depth of field to take points away from her. Again I disagree it’s due to PED’s.
She is the best of all time, I hope everyone can focus on her incredible achievements and celebrate her rather than trying to tear her down. Regardless if you “like her or not” she truly is the best to ever do it and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the same reign from anyone like this again.

It's not tearing her down. I also think she's the greatest of all time and love watching her compete. It makes no difference if she did it 100% clean or took a few peptides/SARMS along the way. They don't do the work for you.......they aren't like a magic pill that will win you the games. Of course we can't say she took anything cause she hasn't failed a Crossfit drug test. People get so emotionally invested in someone being "clean" for what? Because it means they did it all with grit and determination and protein powder? The athletes at the games are such freaks, and people expect them to be superhuman but then do it naturally. For some reason the blinders are on with Crossfit for so many cause they confuse the high level sport with the health and fitness program you do at your box and secretly think that they too could have gotten to the games when they were younger with just HWPO

Do I believe everyone is on PEDS in competitive crossfit.? No. But it would be pretty crazy if the guys at the very top (that win year after year) were able to also beat every person that was having PED help just through sheer mental determination, training harder than everyone else and an awesome protein packed diet.

After watching this year's Tour de France and the CF Games I'm no longer under the illusion that anyone at an ultra elite level is NOT doping in some way. It's kind of sad but it is what it is. That mindset is the only way I can watch these sports and not feel disappointed.
I recently watched the women's clean and jerk ladder event from 2013 and I barely recognized Kara Webb (Saunders) and Sam Briggs. They looked nothing like they do now and all the women looked like athletes without looking juiced. Yes, Kara and Sam were just starting out in CF but Kara was already an athlete who had been training at a high level for years IIRC. I don't know Sam's background. Look at Annie. Barely a resemblance to her early years. Nutrition and recovery only get you so far.

TDF and Weightlifting are two sports that lived on PEDs literally. You could not be in the top tier without taking PEDs, and some of the winners decided to take it to a whole new level. Lance completely admits this, it was an unfair field. Tia..from a weightlifting background, saw her performance so far off in weight events in 2015. Time capped multiple times…

Exactly, improving her diet and training to maximize PED use. You dont just let steroids take the wheel, you double down. Look at Mal, she was coached by the GOAT and barely made the podium (but she changed coaches) How she retires will also show signs of PED use. Stay vigilant my friend

I’ve talked to the guy at BALCO - they know how to beat the system.
My point is that I view the Olympics as the dirtiest sports event ever, especially weightlifting.
My guess is that she met someone and learned “something” when she went to the Olympics
So I see it different from the argument that she’s clean because she went to the Olympics.
Last point - crossfit wasn’t around when I was in my 20s and I was athletic and could place a pounding on my body for days and keep coming back for a long weekend (soccer tournaments). So it’s possible for the truly genetically blessed to be able to recover nightly at the crossfit Games. They have everything so perfectly dialed in.
I think the real truth will come out when she tries to have a baby.
I find it interesting that so many of these elite crossfit women have such hard pregnancies and births.

When it comes to women, you have to look at their childhood development. I have one daughter that played soccer from age 4 and has legs that rival Hiller’s quads and has bigger calves. My other daughter was a gymnast since age 6 and has 8pack abs. You can make similar comparisons of girls that have a youth background in diving, dance and track. These are sports with incredibly repetitive movements that develop the muscle bellies from pre-puberty through young adulthood. So these women look like they are on gear but just have a lifetime of sport specific training. The other consideration is PCOS which is an androgenic condition that has all the good and bad effects of steroids but occurs naturally. I won’t make a guess of which female CrossFit athletes have PCOS but the square jaws, acne, hair loss and lumberjack shoulders are pretty telling .

I've long wondered at the role early extensive exercise plays on development, and to what degree 'genetics' reflect this period of time. When I was 16-18 I rowed at a local club following years of playing other sports. The training was very much focused on all-round athletic development - obviously rowing was a big part, but running, hill sprints, weights, callisthenics were all given a lot of focus. Following university I went back to the club for a few months to help out and do some training myself. Many of the kids who'd been going there since they were 8-10 years old had stuck it out, and were now 15+. One thing which stood out was how similarly developed they all were - broad shoulders, very lean, huge lats - despite having parents and siblings of all shapes and sizes.
