Mikey deserves credit ..he DID guess early on, however back in the day...no one was guessing a split personality disorder. As an educator...extra credit points Mikey!💚
I remember seeing this when it came out, and the Only people who were accurately guessing the twist were those that dealt with BPD, Schizophrenia, or MPD.
@@3Kings_Industries Totally agree and Thank you! I know I'm getting a tad bit older, but it seems like many people who did see it back in the day when released FORGET how much of a reveal/twist his disorder was.
Exactly! I'm a gen x person so when I saw this in the cinema during it's first release...Not one person I spoke with who had seen it guessed correctly. More is known about personality disorders etc so it make a little more sense that a younger audience is more aware therefore picked up on the subtle signs. Just my theory...Mikey still gets extra credit.☺️
he definitely deserves that credit. he said it in a doubtful way bc who would guess "HE'S SCHIZO" and die by that guess right away? he's just throwing out while analyzing it
As an adult now and having rewatched this film multiple times, I’m always impressed how well the score fits each scene. A feeling of grime and moving forward with every scene. It’s 🔥
A “paper street” is the name for a nonexistent street added to a map on purpose as a way to realise if any other map maker copies your work. So… if the house is on paper street then the house never existed. If everything in the house was imagined too, then it gets really complicated. The unreliable narrator method of storytelling means anything could be true though. Love it.
No offense to Mikey, but the problem with guessing the twist is that he KNEW there was a big twist and was watching out for it. Just knowing there is a twist is a spoiler. The best twists are where all the answers are right there for you to see but you only notice them once you've watched through. That is why I dislike anyone making ANY comments to someone before watching a movie or show. You'll always have people sitting there, "Have you watched season 3, episode 6 yet? Let me know when you get to it!". Now that person knows something big is happening in that episode. Someone dying, someone showing back up, a twist, etc.
You are correct. It's hard to not know a movie has a twist of some sort, which makes us ready for it. I think the problem is a lot of movies I go into I expect some twist depending on the genre or theme
Seeing this in the theater was quite the experience. The build up of emotional tension in the audience was so intense before the great reveal that you could practically cut the atmosphere with a butter knife. The subversive nature of the message basically seemed to place everyone into their own existential crisis where their whole reality was challenged in such a way that they were metaphorically holding on for dear life. When the reveal finally dropped, I felt the entire audience psychically breathe a sigh of relief and relax as a collective. All of a sudden, they didn't have to question their reality anymore. "Oh, he's just crazy." Up until that point, I had been wondering how in the hell this movie had even been approved for funding and release because of the crazy subversive nature at the foundation of it's message. And in that moment, feeling the relief of the audience, I knew. Oh, he's just crazy. All the subversion could be written off as madness. Masterpiece, indeed.
Oh geez, this movie came out when I was in high school. The acting/directing is phenomenal. Better believe every guy in my school was bonkers for it and completely missing any of the nuance. Better believe slap-boxing (not “true” fight clubs, but y’know, the spirit was there) started up and the school districts had to make policies about “fight clubs”. Chuck Palahniuk books in my view have a common theme of the downward spiral of how ideas of masculinity and mental health can negatively feed off each other. And how straight guys are expected to do ANYTHING other than go to therapy, lol. For more Edward Norton, Death to Smoochy is a MUST. Dark comedy. Just look at the cast list and I’m sure you’ll want to watch it.
Yay Fight Club! Personal fave because the author of the book is from the PNW and is a UofO alum like myself, Go Ducks!!!!!💚💛 And sorry guys, the eye candy of Brad is undeniable!😂 Such a great film, hope Mikey likes it!
Its honestly crazy thinking about this movie, when asked my top 5 it doesnt usually come up which is weird because its literally a masterpiece, i will say the one scene in the kitchen with marla while tyler is in the basement making all the noise is a little on the nose, like the movie tells you the twist all the way through but subtly except for that one scene just gives it away completely but except for that scene the whole movie is just amazing
When Edward Norton beat himself up in his boss's office. He said for some reason I thought about my first fight with Tyler. That was the main clue that Tyler did not really exist, for me when this was first released.
One of my favorite bits of trivia about this movie is that Ed really did hit Brad in the ear, which if you don't know that shit hurts like hell. What we get in the scene is Brad's real reaction which he managed to keep in character, and Ed followed suit. Happy accidents, man!
Mikey got it! I'm just kicking myself for not watching the whole movie again with you guys! I almost always watch on Patreon but for some reason I went with the edited version on this one. Not that your edits aren't super, the reactions just would have been worth it. I love it when something absolutely "breaks" Mikey like the end of this movie did! Sometimes I think he needs someone to take a little hammer to tap to his starter motor to get him going again. He also could use a processing bar stuck at 99% overlayed under him. (Lol- love ya, Mikey but you're an easy target the way you really get blown away by really great content!) Of all things, this movie always makes me think of The Phantom Menace, Very few movies were allowed to have trailers before episode 1 and they all ran in a special pre-approved package. Fight Club was one of the movies that was in that package, so I remember seeing the trailer many times.
FANTASTIC choice! I thought that when it was revealed that Mikey has not seen Fight Club it would be an obvious choice, but other proposals on the patron list were also very strong. I am happy it won. First of all. GREAT discussion. Some really good observations, I like a lot the one about switching between a movie and a book narrative and between action and mundane life. I think I've seen the movie more than a dozen of times, but like Joe it has been a while, so again - it is great it won. It might be my most favourite movie and definetely in top 5 too. It is 1 a.m. here but I couldn't stop myself from watching the reaction and write a comment. The movie is a masterpiece, I think it might be the best David Fincher movie. There is even a tiny reference to one other Fincher's movie in one scene - Alien 3 where the production studio made his life miserable and the movie is at least... uneven. The cast in Fight Club is brilliant and all main characters are outstanding, but I think that music also deserves a mention. Dust Brothers done great work and the ending song 'Where is My Mind' by Pixies was a perfect choice. BTW I don't know if Joe has read the novel the movie is based on but frankly speaking it is one of those situations when a movie is so much better that I don't think reading the book is worth it. It might even diminish the experience. Again, brilliant choice and since every vote was important I am greatful it got enough to win. Take care!
This movie is a case study of why and how young men are so easily attracted to fascist organizations. It also predicted the rise of so much of the alt-right even while satirizing commercialism and fascist.
I was thinking the same thing...how a certain right wing group in America would so easily fall into this group of guys just to feel like they're a part of something important and makes them feel special while simultaneously being homegrown terrorists. I.m.h.o. MAGA is a stain that will take decades to wash out!!!

I think this movie has a lot in common with Midsommar - in terms of plot, yes, alienated and depressed people gradually getting drawn into a violent cult - but importantly in showing this process in such detail that audience members can get drawn in too...Fight Club does it most with cishet men, Midsommar with cishet women. I think it's interesting that both of these movies become a sort of litmus test for how easily you could get indoctrinated into a cult
