@@MattIrwinPhotography it's all good mate, I didn't mean that you had done it in a bad way, just you know we are ALL hanging out for the 35mm in a big way... So any mention of 35mm will have us all knee-jerking our way down to watch the clip, unless you put something like (non-Nikon) in the title... Which would be a waste of title space really.
I like the 52mm filter size, we need more like this. Maybe I'm mistaken but I don't think you mentioned the function button on the lens... seems it could be handy for changing focus modes on a Zf?
The thing I like about this one that current Z lenses miss, is that 'old school' F mount creaminess to the image. It's so easy nowadays to make technically perfect lenses with razorsharp glass, well balanced contrast and lighting, but there's just something about the third party lenses like this one that really give that old school F mount feel to it. It's a love it or hate it thing, but i'm on the love it side. Thanks for this review Matt!
I respect what Yongnuo has done over the years, I purchased their flash triggers years ago and they are great for the money. This company seems that they build very good products at a great price point. Do you think green fringing could be eliminated in post? or just lessened? Thanks for this video Matt! Unfortunately for Yongnuo, you can buy a used Nikon 35mm f/1.8 S for not much more on the used market.
We missed you Matt. Glad you are back and can’t wait to hear about the Nikon event in Lanzarote! $299 35mm is a solid option for many people. Nice and small too. I hope Nikon does a line of small lenses like this.
And, like many, I thought it's Nikkor Z 35 f/1.2S!! Brilliant title, Matt! 😄 From afar, the surface/design on the lens and focus ring seem quite similar to Nikkor's too.
I have the f1.8 Viltrox version and absolutely love it. That said, I may be selling my Viltrox 35mm to invest into the Voigtlander 35mm f2 APO for Z mount.
Hello Matt! Nice review, I was thinking about getting a 35mm lens, but the price for the Nikkor 35mm lens is not in my budget right now. I already got Nikon Z 28mm and 50mm, and from your past review where you compare the 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, and 50mm, I am not sure if I really need a 35mm lens.
I like the look of this lens and have Yongnuo, Meike and Viltrox Zmount lenses in my collection. However, I already have the Nikon 40mm f2, which I'm very happy with, and wondered how this Yongnuo compares?
Could you please do comparison of the files zf compared to zfc , i have zfc and really strugle to decide if i have to spent the money on lenses ,like 1.2 or even 0.95 ,and maybe some more lights or buy the zf. I live in north country and ita dark and cloudy for 6 months ,and some times i feel bothered from the noice ,mostly i shot with viltox 56mm 1.4 ,but i have to step down to 2 to be sharper and gets bit noicy .so im wondering the ibis and fff sensor is it night and day in files you get ? Or with better lens and good editing it can be almost the same . Can please someone i have watch all tour videos to find an answer but still not sure .
Hi Matt, these Z mount third party lenses are becoming really good, often filling the gap in the NIKKOR Z range. I’ve bought the Viltrox AF 28mm f/1.8 as there is no Nikon equivalent and it’s really good. No it’s not Nikon standard but then it’s not Nikon priced! Years ago I would NEVER touch an indie brand F mount lens - they were, in the main, just awful. This was generally in the mechanical, rather optical department. They just fell apart with hard use. Times seem to have changed, buyers are more critical and manufacturers seem to have responded positively. More power to indie Z mount lens makers 💥
Hey Stu, unfortunately no further info has surfaced. As I said in that vid, it would be great if some or any of those potential updates come to pass in a hoped for FW 5.0 for Z9. As I discussed in the video, it is a big year with the Olympics, so perhaps this is one way Nikon can bring something more to the table via firmware. Fingers are crossed. :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography absolutely does it. I have this one already and use it for my handheld vlogging. But it's at a high aperture, would love a 16mm DX 2.8. :)
Hello Matt, First I hope that 2024 has started well for you and your family? Aswell the rest of 2024 goes well. This lens is not for me. I do love the focal length as 35mm on a fun frame cameras is so good. This lens is at an entry level price point super for some one just starting out. But for me I will with one or two exceptions alway bye OEM glass. As the OEM's taken there time to develop there cameras and I feel if we do not suport the OEM's then we will be left with IPhonse,(there are other phone to). Keep well, stay safe and have fun.
Nikon has said there will be no more lens roadmap, which personally I really enjoyed. But I understand there are probably a few reasons why they won't do it anymore. It allows more flexibility in what they do. They won't be letting the other brands know what their plans are. Amazing lenses will just arrive. Which is exciting in another way. :)
As a product owner, a roadmap is great when you need to figure out what you need to build. But the roadmap is pretty well done minus the 35mm 1.2. Now it’s more of the exotics to fill in some holes. Like a 200mm 1.8, or a 300 2.8 or a line of smaller retro lenses specifically for the Zf/Zfc. Those fill a different market. Need to remember that the Nikon roadmap came when mirrorless was new. Now we have a wide range of Z glass. Let’s wait with anticipation for what’s coming!
@MattIrwinPhotography thanks Matt. I agreed with you, without the roadmap it gives more flexibility to Nikon to create different lens to surprise Nikon users. may be there is a Z200-800mm in the future (my wish), strategy can be changed due to market needs. let's see what Z lenses will come this year.
Yes, I also thought this was the Nikkor f1.2 for a second. Ho hum. Interesting how Nikon allows something so close to its own f1.8 35mm lens to be sold, but I guess this one is slower and the Nikkor has been out for years. It’s probably not going to attract users who are patiently waiting for the faster lens.
"Who is this lens for?". it's for the normal working, camera enthusiast, that can't afford/justify Nikons outrageous 'Z' lens prices, that's who it's for !
Still waiting for manual 1.2 from 7artisans or TTartisan to replace my native Z 35 1.8 .No need of overpriced and oversharpened slow AF lenses anymore. At this stage in time everything slower than f/1.4 is ...slow, haha. This looks lile a great lens but it requires special skills to produce bad mirrorless lens nowadays.
My hart stoped, was thinking about 35mm 1.2 NIKKOR
likewise. oh well lol
Sadly he clickbaited us
G'day Micheal, how did I do that? I did not say Nikon or Nikkor anywhere. You assumed. This is a new 35mm Z mount lens.
Haha no worries @@MattIrwinPhotography you did not do click bait, I also got too excited about the title and didn't finish reading. That's on me

Big Bummer. Hope you had a nice holiday then.

For us FTZ scrubs using the good old F-mount 35 f/1.8G. How does it compare?
Try the apsc brightin star 0.95. you will surprised, specially because it covers almost a full trame and the images have a vintage look
how does this lens compare to the 35mm f1,8 from Nikon?
Very nice review Matt. It is great to have so many lens options!
Where are Z6/7 III? Only thing we are interested are these! And of course 35mm 1.2 … please post a video whenever you have these.. Thanks
I'd like to see this compared to the Nikon 40mm F2, it's much closer in price and close in focal length as well.

Awesome, Thanks@@MattIrwinPhotography
Looks decent, if lacking a little bit of microcontrast. A great option at the price point.
Hi Matt - this seems like a great budget alternative to the Nikon for enthusiasts - it is also a little smaller and nice looking on your Zf.

any comparison to Z 40 F2??

As the owner of the 24-70F4 so affordable bundled with the Z6ii, I cannot see any reason to look at a third party 35mm lens.
Seems to me this is close to the Nikkor 40 f2 which I already have. I'm more interested in the upcoming Viltrox 20 f2.8.
Yes I will do a comparison between these lenses
Nice one Matt as always,, can I ask what happened to the Z9 update to talked about not so long back ?? cheers 🥂 Stu
