  • After keeping on eye out for one of these machines for a while I finally found a nice old washing wringer in my city on ebay. So after a lot of cleaning and a few mayor distractions I try if I can use it as a kind of printing/etching press for printing linocut prints.
You can by prints and other stuff over at eastofawesome.com

The old presses are much more aesthetic (and probably made of cast iron) 🤩 What a good idea to have saved and restored this beautiful antique 👍🏻

Thank you! Yes, it is made of cast iron. A fact that was very noticeable on every step up to the 3rd floor where I live ! ✌️

I love antiques and especially if they’re useful in some way. That’s a lovely ringing out press. You gave it a new life! I’ll have to keep my eye out for one if the opportunity arises. 😊

Brilliant! And you are right- in and of itself the press is a work of art. Your kitty supervisor and your "distraction" look just like my work space hahaha

At 10:27, 10:31 your puddycat shows up. What a beautiful cat! What are your cat's names, breeds and roles in your studio?
Great job changing the clothes wringer into a printing press! I watched your "Tempus Fugit" video before this one and I got to see the press in action. It turned out well!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful art.

Thanks for the nice words! The cat you see there is our little tomcat Titus. Then there are also the the two older pirate cat sisters Yuki and Cleo. All three of them are Ragdoll Cats.
You can see a little bit more of them in this printing video at about 02:10 where I also talk a little bit about Cleo being super grumpy about Titus existing in general (there he is probably about half a year older than in this video here): m.ruclips.net/video/cDFXfYnmpm0/видео.html
Guess you are a cat owner (/servant) yourself?

Danke!

Ok, I see you did a video on the old wringer. Though wood has about 1/30 the stiffness of steel, all dimensions being equal, if the roller is upsized sufficiently, it should work well. I see that care was taken to make the rollers (beechwood?) from glued up longitudinal sections with the grain oriented to keep them as round as possible.
There are some designs floating around on the internet with plywood disc rollers. These are nowhere near as stiff as solid wood longitudinally. But these plywood rollers are about 6" diameter and only 12" long.
The formula for stiffness of a cylinder varies to the 4th power of its diameter!! And inversely to the third power of its length. So that means that size matters!
Gearing is nice, but not essential. Plenty of presses simply use a bigger wheel. So there's no reason a good size press can't be made from wood and basic hardware: steel shafting, pillow block bearings, threaded rod etc.
Commercial etching presses are generally massively built, some certainly overbuilt, and I have yet to find a definitive pressure rating for etching. It's probably around 5000 psi. If anyone knows, please comment. Relief printing needs far less force.
While wood is really no match for steel, cast iron is a different story. It's main advantage is that it could be mass produced. Wood is capable of handling the forces of the press frame, again if sufficiently upsized. Wood has amazing tensile and compressive strength, unlike most plastics.
    Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the information. Definitely agree that there should be more and better solutions that don‘t cost a fortune here. I don‘t think I can help you with the math but let me know if there is something I can test that might help you.

@@eastofawesome Ok, thanks my friend. I think it's doable. And its been on my maker list for a long time. Behind band-saw, skate-ramp and a bunch of other projects. I think PVC plumbing pipe with wood inside and carbon fiber outside (optional) could be the ticket. It could cost more than steel, which would have the disadvantage of needing welding and specialized lathe work.
Love your work and your spirit. Carry on!

Awesome! I’ve gotten my own mangler inspired by you, hopefully it will work! One worry of mine is that the rollers are very tight in the default position, don’t know how i will fit the lino+ printing bed between them?

    • @eastofawesome
      @eastofawesome  20 часов назад

I made onther "upgrade" Video on the press and I wasn't able to fit the new printbed together with lino and blankets at first. ruclips.net/video/FLMXeAc0SAU/видео.htmlsi=sl0CUv7EqOZojssQ ... at about 18 minutes in you can see how I solved it. Is it the same model you have?
