Sketch Journal along with your favorite Books: Moby Dick or The Page
While I was working my way through Melville‘s Moby Dick I made a Sketch Journal Page to follow along with the Journey of the Prequod and the crew.
You can download the Book along with many other classics over at www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2701
or standardebooks.org/ebooks/herman-melville/moby-dick
Both sites are free and you don‘t even have to make an account or something. Project Gutenberg has a huge catalogue and many books even in different languages. Standardbooks has only a selection of english classics but beautifully formatted and with nice matching covers(!).

    All I wanted to know was a good way to transfer a drawing to lino and I got a beautiful man telling me how to live a fulfilling life as an artist. And it doesn’t even matter that I’ve been living a fulfilling life mostly as an artist for half a century, it is still a most wonderful video and I’m going to send it to all my friends whether they are interested or not because there is something here to make everyone’s day a bit better. And another thing - I’m glad I never tried linocut before in all those fifty years, because if I had I wouldn’t now be about to watch this fabulous video for the second time. I’ll pass on the pizza though, although I appreciate the thought, because I’ve just had spaghetti and meatballs.

    Great demonstration sir and I'm so happy you found some acceptable results! I consider myself a traditional & mixed media artist who enjoys experimenting, especially with acrylic mediums and the like! Although I do understand a bit about lino printing, I haven't tried it myself yet. I have an inkjet printer. For several years I too have been trying to master a diy technique for successful inkjet printed transfers so I can combine and replicate my own images, photos and drawings to create my own original art. So far I have had very little success with inkjet prints. For me the process is hit or miss and def not reliable. I used several inkjet printing papers, acetate & over-head projector film along with lots of standard printer paper. I've tried transferring on to 300 gsm art paper (for watercolour & acrylic painting), canvas, cardboard, mount board, mdf, plywood, plastic and more using a multitude of adhesives and mediums. And all that laborious finger rubbing failed to give me the clean, crisp finish I wanted. There are so many variables to consider. The most decent result was achieved using printable transparent film specifically for inkjet printers along with acrylic mediums. But the ink still showed signs of bleeding & smudging along with blank patches where the medium had dried too fast for the print to adhere! I did learn that applying the surface medium with a brush made the layer uneven so some bits dries before others. Spreading with a credit card or similar gave a better, more even layer. I think it's all about the water-content and fluidity of the medium used. Inkjet inks do not play well at all with liquids so acrylic gels are generally recommended as they are less 'fluid'. It's also a learning process and often quite exciting! Anyway. As time passed I became so fed up and disillusioned with the lack of progress that I decided to shelve the idea. I had a new idea.. to invest in a laser printer! So I did. Should have done so a long time ago. Success was pretty well instant using both standard printer paper with rubbing and no-rub transparent laser printer film. The results were fab! Note 1: Keep in mind that I do not have to worry about having medium on my surface as I can paint over or combine it with my process. But for lino-printing, I do understand that glues, mediums, etc. on the surface of the lino may impact the print quality and ink adhesion - or even create new and interesting effects. Now wouldn't that be nice! Note 2: There is a product called Inkjet Fix Matte by Ghiant - an aerosol that can be sprayed onto inkjet prints. The tin says: "Fast drying varnish for fixing and protecting inkjet inks". There may be other similar products out there. I have it here but haven't tried it yet (not since I got the laser printer!) Maybe this could be useful? In all, I really hope I have helped someone out there!

    Really enjoying your videos. Gorgeous prints. Do you ever find that the mod podge flakes or peels when you are cutting the designs? And are you ever tempted to somehow remove the mod podge before printing? Total curious novice speaking here

    • @eastofawesome
      @eastofawesome 2 месяца назад

      Thank you! During cutting I haven‘t notice the modpodge peeling. But I have when cleaning with hot water after the printing. then I noticed I can peel of the whole podge layer. So now if I am impatient I make the first print run with the modpodge and remove it on the first cleaning afterwards, or - if I have the patience- I clean first. (But then the whole Lino Block is wet and you have to properly dry it for a few hours with paper towels and weight (a few big books) so it becomes straight again. Also tried sanding the block, but found the hot water approach much cleaner. Hope that helps and have fun with getting into the printing game!

      My Journals (as well as my digital notes) are usually a wild mix of English and German entries. Sometimes I even switch within a single entry back and forth. Most of the content I read or watch is english so often the brain defaults to english even if I dont speak it regularly. I really like then, though they aren't very stylish, because I can flip them up out of the way when I don't need them, then back down again. They fit over regular glasses. They come in different strengths.@@eastofawesome

      I second optivisors. Very lightweight and easy to wear for long periods of time. They are a game changer.

      Just recently found a super big looking glas super cheap at the flea market that I am currently testing but I‘ll definitely try out these optivisors also.

    Thank you. Because of your video I got four carving tools from the dollar tree and feel that I could do this.

      Nice, I would love to see the result! Cheaper chisels and tools often don‘t come properly sharpened, so this might be something you may want to look into. I still haven‘t gotten around to making a dedicated sharpening video but there are a lot already out here and sharp tools are generally safer and - most notably - more fun to use! Good luck with the project!

    The old presses are much more aesthetic (and probably made of cast iron) 🤩 What a good idea to have saved and restored this beautiful antique 👍🏻

      Thank you! Yes, it is made of cast iron. A fact that was very noticeable on every step up to the 3rd floor where I live ! ✌️
