I just bought a tortilla press at a thrift shop thinking I could do some printing with it. How lucky am I to come across this video! Thanks for showing us how it's done.
OMG thank you I was thinking of getting a tortillera since I am trying to stay in budget and I came across your video. Side Note: Covide really made us adapt and this is genuis !!
Been waiting for this video. It finally clicked thru to me that you are drive by press. I’ve followed for a long time. Thanks for all of the great inspiration.
PVC instead of linoleum (mind blowing meme) this is exactly the videos I give likes. I'm always searching for cheaper smarter better ways to do things and this is a perfect example. Gracias compadre! My passion for making lino prints it's renewed for now on call it PVC prints. Greetings from Mexico
I have used shower liner vinyl sheeting (thin gray stuff) glued to hardboard to carve custom and bigger sizes and it works pretty well. Bit of prep but it's much cheaper than the cost of large lino! I got mine from the home despot (not misspelled) in a big roll for $33 for 5'x6' and just cut it down. The hardboard tempered panel 4'x8' (1/8" thick) was $13 and the glue was some waterproof adhesive stuff I had. I used a rolling pin and brayer to get the air bubbles out and stacked books while it dried. (You can probably spray or coat the panel with a sealer prior to gluing down the liner, but I don't submerge it when I clean off the ink so I didn't do that.) I just get the front wet, scrub off the ink, then dry it face down with a little weight so it stays flat for the next time I print. It is pretty thin material, but it is SO much cheaper for the big images I want to carve. I use a cold laminator to print the blocks and it works well. It's just a suggestion that might work for someone! @@josephvelasquez1094
Amazing video! We love how do you make your prints so easily! We hope everyine can get the most of tortilla press and keep printing without any issues! We definitely are going to buy a yoga mats! Hell yeah!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
La Tortillería, Taller de Arte y Cultura, fantástico !!! 😻 Ahoritita (en mexicano) voy a hacerme una tortilladora manual para imprimir. Saludos desde Toluca
Omg! I thought I was the only one who used a tortilla machine with stamps 😂🤣😅 I used my grandma's tortilla press with stamps maybe 10 years ago and I still use it, I did upgrade to a bigger one.
WOW!!! that was so interesting. I really like the way you use just normal objects that one may have at home to use and get the same effect. Though I will ask, must one change the "tortilla" press in order to get the same results??? I was thinking on getting one as is, but now I'm wondering. I love this idea because I'm a crafter. thank you so much for sharing....will go to your website and check out your store.
You don't know how long it took me to find your video.... Whooopie.... How big can you make these please? Is there a maximum size that works? Thank you so so much for sharing this, I have chronic pain so I can't use a brayer, I have no funds to get a etching like press, plus no space to keep them.
Hi there! I actually made one called the Super Mamalona 5000 and it prints 16"x20"! But, it's a bit of work printing. I'll make a video soon and will show it! Comfortably, I think the largest size is 11"x14" printable.
This looks amazing thank you! Just wondering if you could also print thinner things like monotypes, or etchings/tetra-packs with this method? Thank you :)
I see you rolling ink on that batman image but I don't really get how the white parts stay white. Maybe I'm misunderstanding how that graphic is set up.
Can I print anything thicker than lino? Is there a way to alter the hing so you could print mounted lino or thin woodblocks? Thanks for this great video :)
Hi Joseph. That's an inspiring video. I'm a printmaker here in northern New Mexico. I love the idea of using a tortilla press for my woodblocks and linocuts, but I'm hesitant because of local sensitivities about cultural appropriation since I'm an anglo. Do you have any thoughts/reassurances to share about that?
Awesome results. A friend gifted me a large trunk, I want to convert it into a portable block printing press as remenicent as old news paper presses as possible. Other than torilla press, do you recommend other small press models I could try fitting in a trunk to travel round with? Weight wise, I'm hoping press can move round on a hand truck or be lifted by two people.
I toured around a few nation wide tours with a Rembrandt Pelican Etching press, but thing was heavy heavy, as Drive By Press. There's a few others online that are a big bigger like the Provisional Press (google it) and the Blick 999 Model II Etching Press
I am just starting out with printmaking having a background in Art Education, however I worry about appropriation and utilizing a tool that is deeply embedded in the home life of a culture of which I'm not a part. I live and work in central California and Southern Arizona, both places I can easily and cheaply grab a tortilla press, but am hesitant due to the cultural implications of using one. Not necessarily trying to get a blanket statement, I'm just curious about your thoughts concerning this?
The impetus of sharing this video is the expansion and accessibility of printmaking! Though the tortilla press is the inspiration, once you make one it's not like you can press tortillas with it anyway. Also, simply giving credit to Tres Gatos Press, myself and many many others who use this method will show that you've done your research and are considerate and aware of the cultural use and significance. Spread the ink!!
@@josephvelasquez1094 Thank you for your response! I'm excited to try it with some of my students this year! A baren works fine, but the kids *love* presses. Something magical happens for them when they use one vs a baren. I'll be sure to credit the ingenious and resourceful minds that came up with this. :)
I can’t believe I’m Mexican and didn’t think in this before. Great idea!
Maybe you are not Mexican enough
Man who knew you could make a press with such simple steps like this! Thanks!!!

Hi Larry! I just received your email! Thank you! I'll be responding soon about a printmaking event in Miami in March 2023!

Thank you!!! Also, those political signs politicians put up work great as a carving alternative (solid plastic signs) After elections of course....

PRINT MAGIC!!!
Amazing ✅ 👏
Clever.
Man!! You left Auburn the year before I took printmaking...hate that I missed you.
Awesome! I'm wondering if you could do debossing with this method?
Now im asking my grandma where her tortilla press is at, thank you!
❤

Yah, you absolutely must change the hinge to fit slightly higher than your substrate.

There is not quite enough pressure to print intaglio. Buuuut I do have another press build that does! I'll be posting that video soon!
Rad!
Hi , just wondering if you will be making more large presses eg 8 by 10” for your store ? Great work , also please
Consider shipping to Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Hi there! I can custom make one no problem. Email me @ velasquezprints@gmail.com and give me a city for me to check shipping rates.
🔥🔥👍
Would the tortilla press also work with etching?
Thanks so much for this! I never thought about pvc. What thickness is it? I love the solid effect.
the pvc is 1/4". it's carried in most Florida and coastal Home Depot stores
Great! But where can I purchase one of the larger tortilla presses?
I can custom make a larger one for you! Email me @ velasquezprints@gmail.com
What kind of pvc you use with the lino too? Thank you so much
what kind of PVC are you using in place of traditional linoleum?
I'll be right back, just gonna go 'borrow' mi suegra's tortilla press LOL
NOW I NEED TO BUY ONE. no tortillas.
I see you rolling ink on that batman image but I don't really get how the white parts stay white. Maybe I'm misunderstanding how that graphic is set up.
The white area has been carved away. The process is relief printmaking. Tons of videos and demos here! happy printing!

Hi. When you attach the hinge you can set it to the height of the substrate your using!
@@josephvelasquez1094 Thanks so much...

I wouldn't be concerned with that as long as you give due credit. like I do, and not take credit as if it's your own concept.

Thanks for sharing, I'm interested in trying this. How do you make the print plates?
You draw 'em then hand carve them on linoleum!Tons of videos on youtube and likely local workshops in your area!
Is the print solid because you over-ink?
No. it's solid because of thorough inking and ample pressure
You didn't describe how you modified the larger press.
where do get pvc from?
Home Depot has PVC. 1/4 in. x 24 in. x 4 ft. White Reversible PVC Trim/Sheet
You keep saying a yoga mat. You mean an actual yoga mat used for yoga? Is there a substitute?
did this over 50 yrs ago in middle school. didn’t know one could earn a degree on a 500 year old invention i.e. gutenburg press
