It’s been 15 yrs. since I bought my first luxury timepiece. It was Rolex Date Just, 116200. I still love it. I was in Tokyo and bought it at an AD in Ginza. During the financial transaction the saleswoman asked me if I was ill. I was pale and sweating a bit. I told her I wasn’t, but it was a lot of money. She smiled and said, “I understand, but it’s exciting isn’t it?”. It lightened the mood. It’s a great experience. You’ll remember it forever. Savor the moment. You’ll cherish it forever.

IDGuy Oh yeah - another good technique is to hold two models, one in each hand, to compare. If you’re after a sports watch - don’t forget to consider a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Make mine the blue guilloché dial version with X-71! The quality of the Fifty Fathoms is mind-boggling when you pick one up and hold it. One time I compared one side-by-side with a Submariner. They’re not even remotely comparable. There is not one square millimeter of the Fifty Fathoms that wasn’t unbelievably well thought out.

I feel as if I lean towards the Tudor side. I really do enjoy Rolex's designs and history, but their brand cache doesn't entirely line up with me and my personal style...but if i were to get one, id get an Explorer 214270 because its super under the radar in the metal.
While i can appreciate Omega, i dont like their case proportions in person...
The black bay lineup feels like its a great balance of wrist presence, design and feeling of overall value. in house movements or not, i think its a killer watch. i feel like Tudor is what Rolex used to be, which is also what appeals to me.

I remember crossing this bridge in the 2000's. Fresh out of the military and college. Had a hole burning in my pocket. I didn't even consider anything else but Rolex. Went to Switzerland, walked into an AD and scooped up a sub no date. Then my next three watches would be all Rolex. If I could make my self go back into time, I would have done some more research and look at other brands. Most likely, would have gone with Omega as my first purchase. I have my Omega SMP 300 (2018) and never looked back. Truly, the perfect one piece for me.
Wouldn't be caught dead with a Tudor. Over hyped hipster watch that will always be Rolex's little brother. I will say, Rolex will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first purchase. Back in those days, it actually ment something. Today, can't say the same thing. Especially the silliness with Rolex and their marketing. Killing the brand name but scooping up money and getting all the kids to buy em. Smart, but not for me anymore.

As much as I respect and admire the idea of a single watch, there is no way that I could ever pull it off. I have a very diversified life and I have yet to find a watch that can handle it all. I think you’re right. It’s the only thin black bay. The spectre omega looks unique but might be too thick. The newer seamasters are polarizing and have to fit your style. Rolex is expensive but now might be the best time if you ever want to do it. There is no perfect watch and it takes wrist time to truly know.

amazing content. i went through the exact same process you are going through now. i ended up falling in love with a white AT 38mm after going in the Omega boutique multiple times over the course of months. one interesting thing i did was take the measurement of my wrist width and divide it by the diameter of my watch. funny enough, it comes out to almost exactly the golden ratio of 1.62. this seems great for my everyday watch (and my beater is my blue Orient Ray which i will never get rid of) and i plan on getting probably an Omega NATO for the summer and a bespoke ostrich leg strap for formal events. still need to try this out on a NATO though, as the omega rubber strap on 38mm is just too small. a 41mm size would work better with the rubber, but be a less dressy look. Good luck on your choice!

Of the models that you've shown I would say the OP39 black dial. I've never tried on this watch but it does sing to me. Love it has no date, clean and legible dial with a superb bracelet although no micro adjustment.
14060m (I own one) .It's a fabulous watch. Wears great, nice and slim, no date, simple uncluttered dial with a bezel that adds a touch of interest and has a use too, but everyone has one and they certainly aren't cheap.
Seamaster 300 MC (I owned the Spectre LE version. It wears thick and the over protruding end links make it wear large for a 41mm. Also having a 21mm lug width is a bit annoying if you would change up the straps which leads me onto the NATO. It really suits the watch but the added thickness takes it to almost 19mm!
For the record I also have the Omega Planet Ocean Liquidmetal LE which I bought new back in 2011 and an Omega Aqua Terra 38.5mm 'Skyfall'
Choosing to have just one watch is difficult for someone who truly loves watches as we constantly find ways to justify how a watch would fit into our lives and imagine wearing it at certain times in certain places. If I had to keep just one of my three it would be the 14060m even though I've owned it for the least amount of time as its the most comfy and has a timeless design compared to the more contemporary Omega's.
Good luck and I look forward to part 2 of this though process.

Very interesting! As someone who gives massive amounts of thought to each piece in my own collection, I really appreciate this thoughtful approach. For you, I tend to lean toward the First Omega in Space or Rolex Explorer. I like the Aqua Terra, especially the newly-released green dial version (which you should check out if you haven’t), but most people I know who have gotten one end up selling it, ultimately unsatisfied that it doesn’t have the punch they were looking for. You really seem like an Explorer guy, but it is a bit cliché, especially recently. That seems to be the model everyone is suddenly gravitating toward. Ultimately, the First Omega in Space could make for an awesome one watch. It’s historically significant, a wonderful size, fantastic value pre-owned, and different from the typical Speedy Pro.

If you want a great diver, at a great value, just take the Seamaster Professional. It's an amazing watch that is technically probably better than the Submariner, at half the price. It is a bit bulkier overal, but the movement is better and personally I find the bracelet and the clasp also better on the Seamaster. If you want a diver as your only watch though, I would go for the Sub 114060 because even the maxi-case is still very slim compared to other divers and the bracelet/clasp is much better than those on the 5-digit Subs. You can wear it in your board shorts and your tuxedo, while the Seamaster is a bit too sporty for the latter, so you would probably need an additional dress watch . If you are serious about only getting one watch that can do it all, and you want something that is somewhat original, just take the Explorer 214270. It's absolutely gorgeous, can be worn for any occasion and most people won't even notice it's a Rolex.

So many factors, but yes take your time! Firstly get the watch that looks the best on your wrist not one that ticks other boxes. Other factors include, can you afford other watches later down the line? If not will this watch satisfy you? If you can only afford 1 luxury watch and you really want a Rolex then save for it. My first luxury watch was an Omega Speedmaster Professional with hesalite, I still love it 4 years later and got it grey market for 3,000 euros. I recently got a Rolex GMT Master II 126710 BLNR at retail and love it as well. I think you really can't go wrong with anything from the brands mentioned.

Buying the first luxury watch is so much harder than buying the second. It’s an agonising process, but in a wonderful way. After a lot of back and forth I went Omega SMP. It pulls at my heart strings just as it did when I was a wee lad watching Goldeneye.
Had the exact same problem when I was buying my first proper electric guitar as well. It took a lot of time and energy.

I own watches from the three brands. I think with Omega you get a lot of watch for the money as long as you buy preowned. Tudor is the perfect watch when you want a high quality watch, and fly under the radar. Regarding the brand with the crown, I never felt attracted until I got my first one. I expect to have always a Rolex around, and I hope to give one to each of my kids when they graduate from college.

Great video #IDGuy, this could have been my exact video of what first luxury watches I have been shopping for; Omega Aqua Terra, Tudor BB GMT, Rolex Explorer, Grand Seiko SBGA375. Same comments around Omega's bracelet taper or lack there of, Tudor's case thickness and rivet bracelet, Rolex's price, couldn't fault the GS too much though. Visited the local Rolex and Tudor boutique and put my name down for either the Tudor BB GMT or the Rolex Explorer thinking it would be ages to get the call for either. But a few weeks later, I got the call for an Explorer and could not be happier with my purchase. Love the Explorer and can not fault it after wearing everyday for the past few months, better than I could have expected.

I knew nothing about luxury watches except that as a long-time F1 fan going back to the late 60s, Heuer was the coolest brand (but I was only a youg teen at the time). So I learned a lot in the last 4 months, and decided to get a milestone Birthday, one time luxury piece. I put myself on three different waiting lists for a Tudor GMT Pepsi and was told there were extensive lists. I lucked out the other day, was called by one of the out-of-state ADs and....got my GMT! Say, it is a chunk, but so are most chronographs. And no one complains about those being too thick! Just get the watch as close to your wrist as possible without being uncomfortable, and all is good! Great choices of watches on part one! I look at it this way. If you are fortunate enough to get one of the watches IDGuy is choosing, then you have arrived! Smile!

I just purchased a new 41 mm Aqua Terra Blue Dial. For years I have committed myself to owning a submariner as my first luxury watch. Unfortunately for me, 2021 was no the best year to pull the trigger when considering Rolex. The AT though, has so much going for itself that just fits my wants and needs. A submariner at this point would be more of a trophy than my first watch I can enjoy. Still an absolute amazing piece but I don't know if I'd still enjoy wearing it considering the inflation and attention in the last couple years.

I think the top 4 candidates for you are (in no order):
OP34 Olive: You love the green dial. Simple, yet full of character. Perhaps too small?
Speedy FOIS: Iconic to Omega, robust, reliable, nicely sized and proportioned. Perhaps too common?
OP39 White: Well sized, simple, elegant, dress up or down. Perhaps a bit boring?
AT38: Similar to the OP39, but with more character. Perhaps a little thick and not particularly iconic to the brand?
Subs are expensive. You already have an Exp1 in the Smiths. The Seamaster 300, Diver, Planet Ocean, and BB GMT are too chunky for your taste. BB36 is a cheap substitute to the OP or AT, which you would be better off with. The BB58 is a great option, but it sounds like you just aren't in love with it.

I believe the Rolex explorer 214270 to be the perfect daily. 36 or 39 mm are very comfortable sizes and the watch remains thin enough not to catch on clothes etc.
I believe it is still a true tool watch, as you put it on and forget about it for 2 or 3 months until the itch to wear something different is eventually felt.
You can workout with it, you can sleep and shower with it, you can swim with it, go to work and (perhaps the ultimate tribute to a great tool watch...) you can forget about it and move on with your life, it will always be there when you need it. I have been through the exact same thing last year! At the end I finally go for the 216570 explorer 2, and here's where my thought process:
In the end of 2018 someone in the same department introduce me into watches, and i start to dive into this hobby. I have no idea about anything about watches and i bought a Glycine combat sub Gl0185 as a beater, luckily my mom got a brand new eta movement Pelagos kicking around for no reason and i start wearing these two watch in rotation. (Pelagos as daily and go for Glycine when i want to get my hand dirty. p.s. i dont wear watches while working)
Around the middle of 2019, i knew the pelagos is lacking a little bit of bling factor for me as a daily wearer, so i start to look for a hopefully the first and final luxury watch for the rest of my life. The first thing i do is to list down different criteria for the watch to meet. I want a sport watch, black dial, some polish surface in the dial, great contrasting colour, tone down enough to not let people spot it a few meter away, and finally a brand that are well known for shock resistance and ease of service.
Now, i got three watches in my rotation to wear, and there is still one or two more watches in my "want" list. Hopefully they will never appear in my "need" list, so i will always have a few empty space in my watch box to fill, a few "dream watch" to look forward to. (But still, i am considering to swap the combat sub out for a SRPE35K1 samurai)

I've found happy middle ground in defining a slightly less minimalist 3 watch collection for myself. The way things are looking now, I will have all bases covered with an Omega Seamaster PO for travel and adventure, a Breguet Type XX Transatlantique for unobtrusive daily wear (I also have a personal history with this particular model) and a JLC Grande Reverso Ultra Thin DuoFace in rose gold for special and/or formal occasions. I think those would be three absolute keepers for me.
Side note: I tried to get into Rolex but I just can't justify playing their game. I'm absolutely in love with the Batman, because of how its colour scheme speaks to me and the GMT Master basically being the first ever smartwatch in my opinion. However a 5513 would be my holy Rolex grail but I think I'll do just fine without the headaches that come with owning and maintaining such a piece. Rolex is beautiful but at the same time it has become generic and in my estimation not worth the money. My $0.02 to this wonderful contemplative video. Cheers.

Great advice that, "take your time". Of the watches you're considering, I have the olive dial 114200 and a few LE Speedy Pros. I've also recommended pretty much every dial variant of the 114300, the Omega 300m Master Coaxial (which is a great value buy in the grey market) and the Black Bay 58. I'll be getting a Submariner soon enough myself. Overall some great choices here. Before even seeing your next video I'm going to tell you to get either the 114200 or 114300 with a white dial. I prefer the indices on the 114200 and it definitely wears like a 36mm Explorer I. And you won't see as many of those out there as you think.

  • @davidoleary6631
    @davidoleary6631 4 года назад

I think a Rolex OP 36mm in black or white would make an ideal first luxury watch. It's elegant, very well made and will never go out of fashion. It sits well on the wrist and isn't too big or bulky, will hold it's value well and isn't too flashy. The price is also pretty reasonable for a luxury watch. I feel that this would establish a sound base on which to build a collection.

  • @thomasgilsfeldt9003
    @thomasgilsfeldt9003 4 года назад

I totally agree - couldn't have said it better. I have had plenty of luxury watches, but am not sure I've found 'the one' yet.
Water resistance is also key to settling for one watch, in my opinion, which I guess you'll agree with, looking at your selection.
Having tried both the 114270, 14270 and 1016 36mm Explorers, I lean very much towards that design, but I've ended up selling them all.
I love the design (the case, dial and bracelet) especially the older less clunky ones, but their 36mm size just seemed a little too small for me, despite having very small wrists. My sweet spot, I guess is 38 mm.
My number 1 candidates for a 'one watch' however would be the 114200 36mm Oyster Perpetual (as you say, the quintessential Rolex) or another 1016 Explorer.
Thanks for making great videos - I'm a big fan of your channel.

I chose the black Tudor Pelagos as mine. Not because of brand but I loved how understated (although large) it was compared to a polished Rolex or omega which I would have ended up babying and feeling gaudy in.

Great analysis, IDGuy. If I were you, I would delay gratification a bit longer, skip the derivative Tudors and awkwardly proportioned Omegas, get the Rolex Explorer or No Date Submariner, and don't look back. You love your Smiths Everest and Submariner homages. You're the one buying the watch, so don't worry about others perceiving you as being unoriginal, since they don't know how you arrived at that watch. If you're still hankering for an Omega, then consider adding a Speedmaster later. My friend spent big money on getting his 16600 Sea Dweller, but the value came when he discovered that it was all the watch he could ask for, and he hasn't taken it off his wrist since. Not even for his Oris, Zodiac, vintage Baume et Mercier, or even his Grand Seiko. Rolex might be expensive relative to what you get on paper, but their wearability, versatility, timeless designs and robustness all add up.

Very nicely said, Chi-Town. I am so, so close to make a decision. At the end of the day I really want a watch that not only is something that I can cherish, but also one that proves that I practice what I preach (if you know what I mean?) It's going to be great regardless! I cannot wait for the unveiling day (whenever that might be) Thanks a million for the comment, brother

The Yachtmaster has escaped my attention.
Do not remember being exposed to it online.
Sometimes I disregard Rolex’s because they receive most of the hype.
I understand many people strive to obtain one, due to all the attention given them.
This is a very nice watch.
    Deserves more exposure.
Almost like the stepsister who is forgotten.
Will be interesting to see how it does going forward.

Thanks . Very interesting video . I am going with the Tudor BB58 . The Rolex OP 39 and the Omega Aqua Terra ( blue ). Right now I only have a Stienhart Ocean one 39 . A Hamilton khaki field automatic 38 and a Seiko sarbo35. I'm ok with my watches . I'm happy.

Interesting and comprehensive thought process. Hope you chose the right one in the end.
Would like to say I've done the same but the reality is serial flipping of watches over many years. There's something almost intangible about Rolex over the others in terms of how the watches feel. Even though smaller (40 vs 41/42mm), Rolexes feel more substantial and that's what sets them apart for me... at least at this price point. Try twisting the bezel on a sub versus a pelagos and a seamaster and it's more solid. Same story when comparing the crown and pushers on a daytona versus a heritage chrono and speedmaster. Yes, more expensive and maybe a small factor, but for a one watch collection, I think it's worth the extra.
Personally, I'd go for an AP...

I've bought my first luxury watch for over half a year now. I wanted a GADA with a black dial with less than 40mm and the contenders were:
Rolex Oyster perpetual 34mm, omega aquaterra 38.5, tudor black bay 36 and Grand Seiko SBGR253
I leaned towards the tudor black 36 because the value and size were great but after the rolex OP34MM to me even though it has a simple design it had the x-factor for the proportions and quality of the watch and i will know that after decades it will look great. the aquaterra looked great in person but i felt it will look dated 5 years from now. the grand seiko is beautiful but i liked the rolex much more and the price wasn't huge between them.

Seeing this I value my Explorer even more. It stands out because of its versatility, its laid back charm, tool character and great wearability. Plus, it's a Rolex, so you get the history and value that the brand offers. The OPs can sometimes be too simple.

I'm impressed that you can even fathom only having one of these. Too many great brands, too many great models...You settle on one and a few months later, you start lusting for another. It's a sickness! Good luck!
