I love that your fake dyson started working again! It’s like taking your sick child to the doctor, only to have their symptoms disappear. I have a coffee maker that stopped heating water until I got a replacement. Suddenly it started working again, so we kept the replacement for a backup. That was five years ago!
The counterfeit box is the exact same as my real dyson hairdryer that I bought from ULTA in 2018. They made the boxes to match identically to the ones made at that time. Packaging may have changed for the newer models. I wouldn’t go by the box alone as a way to tell if it’s counterfeit though.
Got mine earlier this year and my box looks the same as the fake one too lol and I ordered mine directly from the Dyson website (wasn't going to risk such an expensive purchase on a potential fake lol)
I got mine from Dyson Dubai yesterday and it's the same as your fake one. I don't believe yours is fake, it's just for a different region, mine is also made in Malaysia. I don't know if the hair dryer is duel voltage, but I believe yours has thicker cable because it draws more amps on 110V. I suggest you keep the other one for when you travel anywhere outside the US.
This video is so helpful especially because I’m looking into buying a Dyson & I was looking on Random websites but I think I’m going to stick to a certified retailer!
I saw someone post on her previous video that they waited for ulta to have a discount that included the dyson and then also signed up for their credit card and got 40% of total
Manufacturers have been required to have those GFCI plugs on hair dryers sold in the US since 1991. So, not only was your first "Dyson" a fake, but it was not made to code in the US.
My guess is that it isn't really counterfeit so much as a model meant for another country. Customer service would only know it wasn't a registration code used in the US so would lead them to believe it was counterfeit.
No it is still a fake. The plug is the only different thing between countries and if you watch her videos there are more differences on the fake then just the cord
That's only in the US as your outlets are a low wattage and can't handle much power. other countries don't have those to this day. I have many hair products brand new in 2021 none of them have that. they do have the warning sticker about the bath tho like on her new one. (I'm in Australia)

I don’t know that I would notice if I bought it, but I can say I’ve never had a dryer without a reset button. I didn’t think about it until you showed the plugs!
In 2004, the Meiban-Dyson Laundry Manufacturing Plant was opened in Johor, Malaysia. The RM10 million (approx. US$2.63 million) plant is a joint venture between Dyson and the Singapore-based Meiban Group Ltd., which has manufacturing facilities in China, Malaysia and Singapore.[26] Dyson stated that the cost savings from transferring production to Malaysia enabled investment in research and development at their Malmesbury head office.
It's almost impossible to tell the difference between real and fake. Also, it's not often to have fake stuff made in Malaysia. There is Dyson manufacturing based in southern Malaysia. In most cases, Malaysia version doesn't come with adaptor because it is built in the device itself. So, I'm guessing that the red one is actually genuine, but meant to be sold in Asia region, but somehow manage to find its way to US. With regards to the heat, it could be bcos u have been using it for over a year. You will probably face the same issue with the new one over time.
It's a fake one! I'm working in Dyson we don't even have the packaging like the counterfeit one. Fyi, Dyson don't have any manufacturing plant in Malaysia, except for the motor. This product are produced by contract manufacturer, so they're very high chance this product getting imitate except the technology inside it.
Have seen a few of you posts about your Dyson. Are you sure the old one is a fake? Since your husband bought it from a seller on eBay, it might be a model from overseas. If you search on "unboxing Dyson hairdryer", you'll see a lot of boxes that look like your old model. Some are also made in Malaysia and bought from official sellers. Concerning the reset button, I think that is an exclusive US thing. Never heard or seen it before and it is not on any of the model I've seen in videos from non-US.
Thank god I watched this video because I bought my wife a dyson supersonic for Christmas off of eBay for $300 so I thought I got a good deal by getting $100 off but then I got suspicious that maybe I got a fake one give. They look so similar. So I unwrapped the present and opened it to compare to your video and sure enough it was a fake one so I initiated a return on it with eBay and went down to my local ulta beauty store and bought a real one for the $400 price tag. Last thing I want is to spend that much money on a fake product that didn’t use the same high quality parts that the real dyson uses.
Intertek is a company that tests products for safety, standards compliance, etc. They're similar to UL (Underwriter laboratories). All consume electronics sold in the US should bare either the UL or ETL (Intertek) logo!
Interesting. I have a white Dyson I bought 3 years ago from Best Buy, I actually bought a few actually that same year because I got some for family members and friends too- all on different occasions and all from different Best Buy locations. The boxes are actually exactly like the fake one. Before you started talking about the them I actually thought the fake one was the "real" one. Based on the box alone that counterfeit one would have fooled me. Anyway I'm happy you have the real deal now because it's so worth it.
My face when the fake Dyson powered on 😱 haha. This was awesome, I’m thinking of asking for a Dyson for Xmas this year. Great video as always! I would love to see an unboxing of the chi Lava hairdryer.
Just incase you're reading and are wondering, when talking about Intertek, she's refering to the ETL circle on the real Dyson. This is a certification that the machine has passed the proper safety inspection for electronics, a certification that must be paid for, and one you most likely need in order to sell it in the US (we see it here in Canada as well). Very similar to the UL or CSA circle on many products. Pretty sure their hair dryers are made in the US
My real Dyson (purchased direct from Ulta) came in a box identical to the fake you have. Never have seen one in the packaging that you have from Best Buy, but they may have updated them since I bought mine in early 2020.
I like Science Courtney - I think the real cord is longer than the fake cord. It also explains why I find the hot temp too hot on my Dyson, but you didn't seem to have that problem when you used the fake.
I had a hairdresser burn me with her Dyson. It was brand new to her and she swore it was "smart" and couldn't damage hair or burn people. She burned off a ton of my hair and my scalp was so injured. I tried to tell her it was too hot many times and she just kept waving me off.
Got a Dyson off of Dyson uk web page last week. The same copper model as you. It does not have the reset button or that black box. I am wondering if the black box is a voltage converter because Dyson is a British company and our voltage is different here compared to you guys (higher).
@@petrichor_dreams_ I bought mine from Dyson Taiwan's official site, it has the black box but not the reset buttons. But the plug just has two prongs, not three.

I think your “fake” dyson is not fake, but the EU version. When you were showing the tags the contact info on one was said EU and the other didn’t which makes me think one is US and one is EUROPE. 🤔
I'm from Malaysia and I can confirm that we don't use 2 pin but 3 pin plugs here. Highly doubt that the fake one it is even made in Malaysia. Oh well.. Fake is just fake..
I think you got the "rejected" dyson product... I'm from Malaysia and we do have a Dyson factory here. The Dyson that we have is all made in Malaysia. It mustve been one of those irresponsible Dyson staff who sells rejected items online etc...
I couldn’t figure out how you could use medium heat to dry your hair let alone hold it to your head for a minute. I tried that and I seriously thought my scalp was going to burst into flames! But now it makes sense! Also, I purchased mine from Ulta and it came in packaging like your counterfeit.
I’m from Australia and ours, well mine, has no reset button on the plug. I bought it from a reputable store so I doubt it was counterfeit. My packaging (was a few years ago) looked more like your fake one... 😬
We have to have reset buttons on many of our electronics because of our voltage. I have seen some reset buttons on some cables in the UK but as Courtney said, the products made for countries other than the US may have different codes for electronics regarding voltage.
Hang 5 there monalisadiva. In Australia we use 230-240V power supply (as does most of the world EXCEPT good ol' USA where they use 110V). This means their device draws noticeably more current (basic Ohm's Law) and also requires a step-up transformer to operate (that is what that box is attached to the power cord). Also, because of their type of power supply they would also be required by local regulations to have the overload rest button affixed.
@swavycurlycourtney the fake one that you review is also actually a real one. I think that version is the one that is released on some asian countries like Philippines.
Thanks Courtney! This is why I don’t buy skin and hair products on Amazon. I have seen too many comments describing consistency problems. I don’t trust a non-direct source for products going on my hair and skin. I have a dyson vacuum but I don’t think I could pay that much for a hair dryer! I did get my dryer off Amazon-great reviews and no issues. I believe that the reset button is standard safety in the US. (I’m old enough to remember when they didn’t have that plug or bathtub safety tags😉)
I just ordered a dysentery yesterday! Got the black and purple one! I’ve been wanting one since they first came out. Don’t worry I called days on directly to order it!
Thanks for all the info. I'm new to the curly girl method and Dyson. I had never heard of Dyson until yours broke. Sadly I can't afford one. Most of my extra cash right now is going to help my daughter pay for homeschooling supplies during the shut downs. Maybe next year when the kids are back in school grandma can splurge for a new hair dryer. Thanks again!
The clearest difference for me is the higher gauge power cord on the real Dyson. With such a powerful machine as this, I’m not surprised that the fake one died on you with a smaller gauge power cord. It would’ve wanted more power than it could get so it would end up killing the motor. Think of it like a heart that’s trying to pump blood with clogged arteries. Your fake Dyson had a heart attack! lol I’m glad you have a real one that works properly now. 😊
Didn't the real dyson hair dryer come with presentation case? because your real dyson copper/nicket doesn't include with presentation case. When see them from the dyson website, all dyson hairdryer include with presentation case. when you see presentation case from amazon case itself costs more than 50-60 dollars range lol
hello I have seen your video and I am super satisfied since in 2020 they gave me the Dyson but it turns out that it is also not original and now I can buy it knowing which is the original

I'm from Malaysia and I can confirm that we don't use 2 pin but 3 pin plugs here. Highly doubt that the fake one it is even made in Malaysia. Oh well.. Fake is just fake..
I bought the Dyson when it first came out and I never got a carrying case, which would’ve been nice.
This is why you have been able to dry your hair on a med heat lol
My dyson came in the same style box as the fake one. But i purchased my dryer from ulta. I registered the warranty on the dyson website with no issues
Same! Bought my Dyson from Ulta a few years back and it came in the same packaging as her “fake”. Maybe Dyson updated the packaging 🤷🏽♀️
Same. It came in the box like her fake one (I got it today) but I was able to register it on the Dyson site with no issues.
I think you got the "rejected" dyson product... I'm from Malaysia and we do have a Dyson factory here. The Dyson that we have is all made in Malaysia. It mustve been one of those irresponsible Dyson staff who sells rejected items online etc...
I am from Europe and bought mine from Dyson Austria... it is made in Malaysia.
YAY!!! So glad you got an authentic Supersonic! I recently got myself the same Copper edition and LOVE it!!
I couldn’t figure out how you could use medium heat to dry your hair let alone hold it to your head for a minute. I tried that and I seriously thought my scalp was going to burst into flames! But now it makes sense!
Also, I purchased mine from Ulta and it came in packaging like your counterfeit.
I burn my scalp by heat level 1. I thought it was fake because I thought dyson has no heat damage. But maybe it is the real one 😅
You cracked me up! So funny that it started working just for this! 🤣🤣
I bought mine at ulta
🔥You give me the same feeling as seeing my food at a restaurant.
I just ordered a dysentery yesterday! Got the black and purple one! I’ve been wanting one since they first came out. Don’t worry I called days on directly to order it!
I bought my Dyson dryer from Dyson and after your debacle I was checking mine LOL
So interesting comparing the two
And yes definitely unboxing or hair care hauls!
What a great video!! Guess i should check authorized dealers/sealers before I by products. Thanks
I love and appreciate how science minded you are. Thanks for all you’ve taught me so far! 💕
Thankyou SOO MUCHHH for making this video! It was very informative! 🤯
Your amazement when it started working, so funny!
Glad you got a real one! Was suprised (just like you) that you're fake dyson worked after you tried it a few times!
Where did you buy the fake dyson???? Did you contact them??
This was a great informational video Courtney... and your sweater is very cute 🙂
you did the temp measuring difrendly on both dryers
The clearest difference for me is the higher gauge power cord on the real Dyson. With such a powerful machine as this, I’m not surprised that the fake one died on you with a smaller gauge power cord. It would’ve wanted more power than it could get so it would end up killing the motor. Think of it like a heart that’s trying to pump blood with clogged arteries. Your fake Dyson had a heart attack! lol I’m glad you have a real one that works properly now. 😊
plot twist its actually not fake they just want you to buy a new one
I brought mine from a real retailer and the box is the same as the fake box too. The fakes are just really good copy
I always wanted a dyson but i never liked the colours. This copper one is so pretty though! Im gonna get this one
to me fake one looks better - how much is the difference between them in pricing ? half price?
You didn’t mention the time of drying the hair, did you notice difference using both?
The real one does have a higher pitch, real one sounds like mine. Mine is an older version but has all features as your new one.
Thank you for educating us on this. It may help a lot of people before they might unknowingly purchase fake dyson products for Christmas gifts.
I live in Asia and Dyson have a factory in Malaysia and China and our plugs are different than yours. But we can have a three pin plug
Welp, if it weren't for the fake to malfunction you would've never known it was fake 😂 blessing in disguise i guess.
Intertek is actually a quality testing certification company, and not the manufacturer. So that's why the counterfeit product doesnt say Intertek.
If I could have ordered the perfect video for me right now, this would be it. I'm trying to decide if it's worth investing in or not 🤷🏻♀️
Didn't the real dyson hair dryer come with presentation case? because your real dyson copper/nicket doesn't include with presentation case. When see them from the dyson website, all dyson hairdryer include with presentation case. when you see presentation case from amazon case itself costs more than 50-60 dollars range lol
I’d love to know if there was a price difference between the counterfeit and the real one!
She mentioned this in her previous video. Her husband purchased it for nearly the exact retail price just a few bucks shy of it.
I found it on aliexpress for 50 bucks
hello I have seen your video and I am super satisfied since in 2020 they gave me the Dyson but it turns out that it is also not original and now I can buy it knowing which is the original
Good information Courtney. Thanks for the hard work.
I cannot wait to get my Dyson
I have a red one but I’m not sure if it’s real or not because it has everything your real dyson has and it’s a long story from who I got it I’m not sure
