Steve and I grew up in the same neighborhood and went to middle school togther in Conroe, Texas. He was the reason I got into BMX.

When bmx was still raw, but the equipment was getting awesome.
This was the end of my bmx days. I rode from 83-95. They do way cooler shit now, but we started it. Ehh, nostalgia, "dang kids these days", ha!
7 dirty kids and a couple stolen shovels was life.

The Spider & Billy Griggs were the most Entertaining to watch from that Era.

Ha! Rad. This video is so cool, my Dad just left the camera on the tripod and let it roll. Fun to catch those details after all these years.

Freakin' vultures with the banners. Never saw this when I raced in the early '80s

The last race of every national used to be the 3rd & Final round of AA Pro. This "vultures chasing free banners" trend eventually required the ABA to move that ultra-important Pro race to earlier in the day... I have a number of videos where the Pros are actually swerving around kids running onto the track (and costing themselves money in the process) during that 3rd main.

I could be wrong, I know racer's talent and ability these day's has greatly increased since the 90's, but it seems like the 90's racers were more aggressive? Like they were right up under each other's bikes until the finish, seems like alot of racers today stop trying their hardest if they're not going to place at least 3rd.

I love how back then you actually could make a move and pass or pull someone down a straight versus now it is nothing but follow the leader and hardly any peddling. I kind of despise how you can go down an entire straight without peddling now.

I totally despise it. Part of the art of BMX - to me - was gaining speed / losing speed / re-gaining speed / etc. It required pedaling and power AND finesse over "poorly made jumps and turns" that weren't easy to get through. Each track was unique. Each turn had its own groove. Some tracks were fast, while others were super slow, and you had to navigate through the weekend regardless of what the track was like.

@@BMXArchive That is how I remember it. Nothing was perfect and tracks were always changing for better or worse. You had to know how to do everything. Not only did you have to know how to jump but you had to actually have power down the straights and pedal. What was the old saying... spinners are winners.

@@Unc0mmonSense "SPIN TO WIN." :) We also had another phrase for getting down the first straight: Snap, Cut, Pull!!!

😂😂 if you took today's pros and put them in a time capsule, they would still best these guys, even on this shitty track.

Love how evwry one just steals the banners lol.

That used to be the thing to do! The 3rd AA Pro main used to be the last race of the day... but because kids would run on the track and steal banners (while that last race was happening!), they moved the Pro mains earlier.
