When Ryan was like, "NEVER CARED FOR WHAT THEY DOOOOOOOOOO", that's exactly how James sang it lmao
I'm so confused at how people their age haven't been exposed to the original Even if they're not massively in to Metallica or Metal. This would have been everywhere I'd imagine when they were younger
Lmao big facts. He sounded exactly like James.
This definitely would had been on the Sons Of Anarchy Soundtrack
I was thinking the same thing.
+1 here
I've always wanted to hear Stapleton do the theme song. Before I knew what Curtis Stiger looked like, I always pictured someone like Stapleton lol
Kinda slow and boreing. I like Metallica and Chris disappointed.
@@Half.Throttle.adventures. To be fair, I think this song's already slow. True, he made it slower. The absence of James' solo also makes me like the original more, but to each their own. Cheers
Gentlemen, this song is the reason I picked up a guitar and got serious. I so wish I could see your reaction to the original. Cheers!
SAME
Yes!!!
this and nirvana's ''lake of fire'' where my first :)
@@AmericaFirst-1 lol are you 35 like me? Exactly the same. And come as you are.
100%
The original is a straight up power ballad. Metallica shocked and turned off a lot of OG fans but most of us and the world were ready for it. Absolutely brilliant tune!! Great cover to boot.
Go ahead and react to the original I can’t believe y’all haven’t heard it
Chris did a great job on this song and his voice is outstanding. He is humble and I know his main goal is to honor and show respect for this band, not to out sing them and I like this about him.
I believe u, but he did- his version is a thousand times better.
@@bowinkle8316 you know nothing
So surprising to me how much this Metallica cover by Stapleton reminds me of Chris Cornell stylistically... RIP
Now you guys have to do the Metallica version
Chris Stapleton was first in a band called the Jompson Brothers (rock/southern rock). Highly recommend if you want to know more of Chris Stapleton
They have done Jompson Brothers and Steeldrivers
@@kimvoss6600 yes, and both bands were amazing
Absolutely!! Love their album. Damn good!
After hearing all these covers, I'm convinced the original will never be topped. It's the most emotional, most powerful, and perfectly layered sonically.
You don’t need to listen to any other version to know the original is the best version lol
WICKID? I KNOW THAT YOU HAVE MISSED THE POINT OF THIS COVER ALBUM ALTOGETHER. #1 IT'S A FUNDRAISER FOR CHARITY. #2 IT'S A WAY FOR ARTISTS FROM DIFFERENT GENRES TO PUT THEIR SPIN ON VARIOUS METALLICA SONGS FROM THE BLACK ALBUM. IF YOU PREFER THE ORIGINAL SO BE IT BUT DON'T YOU DESPAIR IF YOU PREFER THE COVER. IF EVERYBODY'S MUSIC PREFERENCES WERE THE EXACT SAME THIS WOULD BE A SAD PITIFUL BORING WORLD. PERIOD!!!!!BTW GREAT REACTION GUYS & ALL PROPS TO CHRIS STAPLETON & METALLICA.
Miley did it the best
@@thegooniverse495 YOU MUST BE 12!!!!!!!!!!!
@@mikebeasley6447 39, but close! I'm just not biased
This month is the 30 yr anniversary of the Black album.
i still remember buying this album the day it came out, on my mid-day break working at the vet hospital while in HS, laying on a couch in the basement listening to it.
when the soft singing part of the unforgiven came on, i was trying to tell if it was hetfield or a guest singer..that was the first time he sang like that on a record, it was shocking to me.
then this song.... what a mind F!
I had no idea; still one of the greatest albums of all time.
Wtf..lol..so I was a huge Metallica fan AND a Chris Stapleton fan..The two couldn't be further apart. YET he pulled it off!! I didn't think he could do it . After this..I will never doubt that man ever again.
That man can sing/play anything and make it epic! WOW.
Only Chris could take this and make it his own. damn!!!!
This song is my new anthem for my whiskey and cigar nights.
You definitely have to listen to the original Metallica version. It is basically a love song although not in the sickening sweet, unauthentic vibe you often get when hard rock/metal bands do ballads (I think mostly because the label wants it). This might be a tad slower, but if so, not by much. It definitely has a more country flair simply because of the instruments they are playing and how they have them tuned/set up for effects.
Edit to add: while I know this is a rock song, it made me realize that Chris Stapleton also fits into the 'outlaw country' music category (if that's still a thing) in that his sound and what he plays isn't just the typical pop country music. Maybe people like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, et al made it easier for someone like Chris to get to the type of music he plays today or maybe they're inspiration. Either way, just glad that he exists as he is a superb artist.
He's definitely outlaw country. Kinda a southern rock like CCR, Blackberry Smoke, Skynyrd etc. At least for me.
This is well written! Everything you said is on point and resonates with me. Thank you.
Outlaw country is still a thing
He also does a live version of the Waylon Jennings song I Ain't Livin' Long Like This.
Right away, I thought this would absolutely be something you’d hear on an episode of Sons Of Anarchy. That dark roadhouse kind of vibe that packs a punch. I’m only a minute into the song and I’m digging it. I’m a proud metal head, but I love Stapleton’s voice.
So true, this song would fit it perfectly
If SOA had gone a different way, with Jax and Opie putting things right with the club and ending with them as President and Vice President. This would have been a great song for them to ride off to in the finale.
I can envision Chris sitting in an abandoned grain elevator in the middle of the Mississippi Delta belting out this tune and breathing a whole new level of pain and torment into it. It;s very Delta Blues sounding to me. PEACE!!!!!
My wife walked down the aisle at our wedding to the original Metallica version of this song... so it's extra meaningful for us. Such a classic 🤘🤘
First time hearing this cover. This Song is part of my childhood memories.
It’s interesting to listen to a cover first, considering the original has like a billion views. It’s not like a Nine Inch Nails/ Johnny Cash situation.
I agree. I know the story behind “hurt” and it’s truely a Johnny Cash song :)
@@skapuleproject2012 Only not.
@@jspriggs9386 lol I can respect that. I love that Music speaks to each of us our own way.
My thoughts exactly..did the original wrong by listening to this first.
or Soundgardens Johnny Cash cover ....
DEFINITELY need to do Metallica's version next, so you can really appreciate the song and versions of it.
I'm 43 and this guy is one of the 10 best artists I've ever heard
It don't matter what kind of music you listen to Chris has a way of bringing you into his world and you just chill and listen and enjoy life.
Black album marathon in honor of 30 year anniversary.
This is my favorite cover of a Metallica song hands down
Right? My favorite Metallica song by my all time favorite artist.
Absolutely.
If you want to hear a country version of Metallica, listen to Mama Said off of Load.
Wooo definitely impressed. Love that dirty, lonewolf, bad ass feel.
Metallica's version is a slower laid back song for the typical Metallica song.
The Jompson Brothers isn't Metal, but it is rock Chris
Stapleton was the lead of a rock band years ago called “The Jompson Brothers”.
His side rock band is called The Jompson Brothers
The solo that he created on this song I’ll describe it as driving in a dark Texas road with just the moon for light. If you’re in a relationship in a hurry to be back with the person you love because it’s burning being away from them and if you’re broken just trying to mend the pieces of your heart understanding listening and healing yourself. Chris is just a powerhouse
Just damn. Hauntingly beautiful and swampy. Covered in a way that definitely moves the human needle toward the "Hell yeah!" side of the gauge. 🤘❤🤘
Love you guys! Chris done a fantastic cover and made it his own yet did not compromise the original!
As a lifelong fan of Metallica and a fan of y'all for about a year now I'm very happy you are checking this one out. Love to y'all from Duuvaaaaal!
🌴🌴904🌴🌴
Definitely Chris playing the guitar solo.
James is a country/blues fan. Shows in Mama Said. In what I've heard of this album, this is the best cover. Close second is Volbeat's Don't Tread on Me.
EDIT- Fun fact: Chris' wife sings backup.
I like this version honestly! It's dark, gritty and grimy. Right on! And I've been a Metallica fan since '83 so yeah. But you really need to check out the original. I'd love to see that! I love that you can hear Chris's wife Morgaine wailing background on this too! Their voices really merge well together! James wrote the song about his girl at the time. And his openness to her. And also his not caring about judgement from most people. No shit, Stapleton could front and play lead guitar on a true hard rock/metal band right now if he wanted to!
Agreed!! I was gonna say that this version is so DIRTY, but your description is so much better!! Great song!!
Yall gotta do Cold by Chris even if its just on your own time you have to listen to it
How many times have I listen to this song over the years....love the song... but hearing Chris do it all I can envision is a strait up badass western with an anti hero seeking revenge from all those that have wronged him.
This is actually a "love song." James was hesitant in bringing this to the band/studio because of that. This song is very special to me and my wife because of the lyrics. It's a fast waltz and we danced to the "Elevator Version" at our wedding back in 1996.
I'm a bit ashamed to admit it as a ballroom dancer, but I never noticed that waltz tempo until you said something! I bet that was an awesome wedding dance.
Chris Stapleton just spits platinum!!! I truly think people are going to look back a 100 years from now and Chris will be in the best vocalist of all genres of all time conversation. I definitely think we’re witnessing one of the greats in real time
you guys HAVE to check out his song “you should probably leave” off his latest record.
i waited 7+ years for that song to make it on an album. you can find the original on youtube dated back to 2013 or so.
it’s so good!!!
this is a bluezzy rock vibe out standing and probably the only person who can pull this off for me (certified purist)
Hey certified purist Outstanding is one word.
thank you Webster
@@mr.h.36 lmao
What cave do you guys live in that you never heard the Matallica version of this song, its got to be one of their biggest song ever as far as radio play.
You do understand that radio has different channels? It's entirely plausible for someone to go their entire life without hearing a popular song or even an entire genre of music. How much Jagged Edge have you heard? How about Monica? Aaliyah? 👀
Damn that drummer is DEEP in the pocket! The whole band really
Never knew this existed ..thanks LIV for introducing me to this gem. I will blast this while I ride my horse thru the zombie infested abandoned city.
Chris and H.E.R. Performed at the CMT awards this year her song Hold On.
I definitely like his version country-rock version. Chris is definitely versetal in his sound.
Metallica's original version of the song is kind of a slow jam of TBA and the official video is kind of a day in the life of Metallica in the studio creating the song. It is slow paced for the most part and comes across as a relationship/love song about sticking with it through all the stuff a relationship goes through. Chris's version, with his voice and his guitar work take it to a different place and vibe where to me it comes off as a song about personal struggle through all the BS of life. I really like both.
I heard someone else talking about James Hetfield's playing style. The picking patterns that he uses are basically a suped up version of country and folk guitar strumming. I think it was an interesting take on James' style that I hadn't heard before, but it makes a lot of sense. Most of us that are older came up listening to the music that our parents listened to and didn't branch out until we got older. That is why it makes sense to me anyway.
I mean James is basically a country boy and a metal head combined into one. Look at him outside of the band he loves hunting and wears cowboy hats and boots all the time, loves working on cars and living a free life. Also makes a lot of sense when you consider Metallica’s discography. Especially in the load/reload era. Plenty of basically country songs on there. But I wouldn’t say his playing style is similar to that style of music. More just that he knows how to incorporate those sounds in the music by taking a chord and picking it in a way that gives off those country/folky vibes when he wants them to. I’d say it’s more of a choice than “just how his style is”. Because most of their songs where there’s picking patters with chords there’s basically no evidence of any country or folk influence whatsoever. It’s just he has an appreciation for that kind of music and knows when certain songs can benefit from that sound and playing style and that’s when hr incorporates it.
Jason isbell is on this CD too and covers “Sad But True” in a really unique and cool way. Definitely have to review that next.
He KILLED that cover too.
So freakin' good!
This guy can sing whatever and it will be AMAZING
Just saw Chris live a few days ago for the second time. He’s so much better live (if you can believe that) than he is in the studio. His shows are almost too good to believe for a live performance.
^^^ This! i was gonna recommend on their patreon that since Tennessee whisky is their 2nd most viewed they should do a revisit to a live performance of the song from either the ruclips.net/video/IBLruNfUqUs/видео.html Austin City Limits or ruclips.net/video/07tL6JahREY/видео.html Farm Aid but they never see me :(
You guys should start doing Metallica Monday cause there is a lot of music you're missing out on
I can tell you, the cadence of the original is exactly the same as this one but this one has more twang to it.
It seems a tiny bit slower to me. Maybe it’s just my perception of the movement of the guitars. This has a sludgier feel to me. It’s good, though. It’s interesting to hear the blues influence in his version of the song. Then again, Chris Stapleton can basically do anything he wants to.
Man I wish you guys would do a run of some country/American guys:
1. Tyler childers - Nose on the Grindstone
2. Billy Strings - Away from the Meier
3. Zach Bryan - Quiet Heavy Dreams
4. Kat Hasty - Highway Song
5. Lori McKenna - The Good Fight
Etc etc etc etc haha. Love the channel guys!
Chris really does have a rock n roll, metal voice but that blues is to the bone! When he was in Jompson Bros, he had some straight bangers and bone chillers! Great cover!
I'M 64 YEARS OLD ENJOYED THE ORIGINAL BUT POOH-POOHING CHRIS FOR SINGING A COVER TO HONOR THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS CHILDLIKE AT BEST!!!!!!!!! THIS VERSION ON ITS OWN IS ALREADY #37 ON THE HARD ROCK BILLBOARD CHART THIS PAST WEEK NOT TO MENTION #3 ON THE DIGITAL SONG BILLBOARD HARD ROCK CHART & #2 FOR THIS PAST WEEK ON THE BILLBOARD HARD ROCK STREAMING CHART. ALL THIS WITH VERY LIMITED RADIO AIRPLAY. NO WONDER ROCK & ROLL RADIO SUCKS SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!BTW GREAT REACTION GUYS. YOU CONTINUE TO ROCK. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY SUGGESTION FOR ANYONE IS TO HEAR CHRIS PERFORM THIS SONG LIVE IN CONCERT. YOU WILL BE TOTALLY AMAZED. GUARANTEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ll never forget when this video came out in MTV back in the early 90’s…them talking and hanging out with that war veteran in the wheelchair.
Ryan you ain't lyin'!!! The guitar solo in the original is beyond belief. Amazing!!! And the original video is very cool too.
Have to react or review or listen to the orginal to realize why metallica are the legends that they are and why the Black album is so universal among with their other albums, don't get me wrong this cover was amazing.
You need to hear the original because this is spot on but with the Stapleton magic dust sprinkled over it 💥
Heard this today while grocery shopping at Kroger in Cookeville, Tennessee. Kroger gettin hip .
The one I work at plays Cold
@@dylandenney3980 I can feel your pain brother. Where is this be cold location ?
This is such a great idea for Metallica. They get more album sales, revenue and sales (views or clicks) in the original black album and they didn’t have to do anything.
Huh
That's the genius of Lars!
I love how Ryan nailed the James Hetfield part at the end without even hearing the original hahaha
NO MATTER HOW FANTASTIC THIS VERSION IS METALLICA ACTUALLY PRODUCED THIS GREAT SONG AT VIRTUALLY THE SAME SPEED. PERIOD!!!!!!!! EVERY RENDITION OF ANY SONG STANDS ON IT'S OWN WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. IT IS TOTALLY UP TO YOU TO PREFER ONE OVER THE OTHER. BY NO MEANS DOES THAT MAKE YOU RIGHT OR MAKE YOU WRONG. LIFE GOES ON. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Chris Stapleton as much as the next guy but the original is far superior. The solo to the original is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Yes, I love CBGB to TOOL...but you can feel James' soul when he sings it. I almost threw up in my mouth when I heard Miley Cyrus sang it just now...
James did the Solo also!
Yes. No comparison...
It's not supposed to be a comparison. This is part of a tribute album that will be forthcoming.
@@TheJustJoe why? Miley Cyrus is a fantastic talent. I've been listening to Metallica for 20 years but Miley is seriously talented. Listen to her cover of Jolene or the latest song she did with Billy Idol. The girl has talent.
I hate when people who can't let their prejudices go.
Chris doing it his way,
So talented... he can sing all genres perfectly - whether country, blues, soul, rock, metal and more...liked your commentary!
A great song is made great by great artists
I would’ve preferred the original Metallica version. If only for Hetfield’s solo at the end. Watch the video.
@@rorz999 fvck yea
I really hope you do the original Metallica version! Ryan’s totally right about the chorus of the Metallica version. Haha! Chris did kill this, as always. He honors the original, while still putting his stamp on it. After doing the original Metallica version of this song, please follow up with Chris Stapleton’s “Cold”. To me, that one has more of an R & B feel to it rather than his usual straight up blues stuff. That man can do anything!
I second reacting to "Cold". That song is amazing!
...with that out the way; love you're channel. You are one out of 3 favorite music reaction channel out there. I dont know this song but thanks for sharing it!
Sometimes the reason we listen to reaction videos is to get turned on to something like this
Just finished watching all your other Chris Stapleton videos. Some journey!! Perfect timing for this one
Y'all gotta listen to the original though. Such a great song. An Chris Stapleton definitely thru his country spin on this one. 😊❤️
First time I heard this, almost brought me to tears...
I think this is a much more blues sounding version. Metallica didn’t want the Blacklist covers to sound like the originals. The whole point was for artists to put their own spin on the songs. By the way, all the profits from the album go to Metallica’s and the artists’ favorite charities.
👍😎
You guys are awesome!
Chris did a cover of "Whipping Post" live performance with Greg Allman in attendance, check it out amazing is thd only way to describe it.
This is damn good!
Definitely chris’ interpretation
A dark country vibe... dark country and dark blues is an awesome niche
Nothing Else Matters is the song that popped my Metallica cherry back when I was 13/14. Changed my musical life. Within a month or 2, I had purchased all their records up to that date. Give the original version a listen.
You guys gottttttta review Starting Over. It’s a jam. Beautifully written and recorded. Love you guys!
Shooter Jennings "Black Magic" is what this reminds me of
There is no denying Chris has an amazing voice and can play a sick guitar, but, you have to do the original. There’s just something about it no one will ever be able to touch. I attended a wedding in Vegas that was on the rooftop of the Platinum hotel at sunset. The bride walked down the aisle to this song ( the original version) and I just can’t describe how absolutely breath taking it was. Great cover, but you MUST hear the original and share your experience with us!
Chris was in a rock band called Jopsom Brothers, might be worth a listen. On The Run, Ride My Rocket, Secret Weapon are probably the hardest rocking of the bunch.
Very intense he really owned the song
Royal Blood - Sad But True. It's the best cover on this blacklist for me!
Big fan of Stapleton, but a bigger one of Metallica. Good Cover , and appreciate it for what it is, but this song it's one of those that the original can't be beaten. The work, passion, hours, heart that James put into this song... really shines through in Metallica's Original
You guys have to do some of Metallica's covers like Whiskey in the Jar
One of my favorite Metallica songs of all time!
Anything off Garage Days really, but yes... this!
While this is a slow Metallica song, with acoustic accompaniment, Chris Stapleton has found the blues in this song, and pulled them to the forefront. This is a fantastic interpretation, and you guys are right, HIS VOICE IS FIRE!
Awesome Cover!
Chris is amazing!!
Please react to the original!!!
We gotta get you guys to do the original. it's required now.
Funny thing, I'm usually not much of a fan of modern country music and I didn't really like Metallica's black album but I REALLY like this cover.
Chris Stapleton is really a genre of his own, at least for me. Dude could sing the phone book.
James Hettfield wrote this as a love song to
his girlfriend
and thought it was to soft for Metallica but Lars Ulrich convinced him to let the band record it.
I really enjoyed this version of Nothing Else Matters. Chris Stapleton really can sing anything. The original is a bit slower than the usual Metallica.
Ok if you guys want a more rocking side of Chris Stapleton, please check out The Jompson Brothers. That was the rock band he sang & wrote for. There's only 1 album & it's awesome. Oh & I LOVE MetallicA. And Chris absolutely did his thang on this song.
