@Life Is Peachy It's subjective. For me i put them above Preist, Maiden, Sabbath and Megadeth. No one can argue with me about it and I've listened to all these bands. No one has been as influential as Metallica.

I think that James could (finally) admit that he did like Jason after all. It's no excuse for all the bullying they have done to him, but that's his view on Jason's time in the band. Of course there must have been times that James and Jason shared a laugh. I hope that Jason is enjoying himself and spending time with his family and is making music that makes him happy. Also that James and Jason get well along together in current times. Maybe we'll see Jason with the band again when Metallica celebrates their 40th anniversary, similar to what they have done with their 30th anniversary.

It would be great if the band could talk about Kirk's contribution to their music in glowing terms, or really just at all, like they did with Rob. Without Kirk's solos I'm not sure the 2nd - 4th albums would be iconic as they are, especially with songs like Fade, RtL, One etc plus he wrote the Sandman riff! Give the guy some respect
Rob belongs in Metallica, I just cannot see anyone else who could have fit into this band. He gave me band a second wind as far as getting back to the basics and making music that is a mix of the first 5 classic albums.
Dude I have so much respect to Kirk and letting the heart bleed out his feelings toward Jason and me personally never really heard this side of the story when Jason came along. Met4Life boys.
Say what you want about Metallica, but if this interview was 20 hours long, I still would have listened to every second of it. All these guys are worth almost a billion $$$ combined and the amount of humbleness shown here telling their own personal stories, this is really a reflection of how people should go about their lives.
Agree so much. I hate he had to leave. When I was 16 me and my best friend and my brother went to our very first Metallica concert and we were standing at the edge of the balcony screaming every lyric in headbanging the whole show, and Jason acknowledged us and pointed at us and gave us a nod and through the metal “horns” up at us and that just made our night. For a lot of us that got into Metallica in the late 80s early 90s. Jason always felt like he belong to and Jason always seem like the one that related to the fans the most. Don’t get me wrong. I love Rob and I think he’s a phenomenal bass player but I hate that Jason had to leave but I understand it at the same time so if we can’t have Jason I’m glad we have Rob but you are so correct. It’s not like Jason is one of the 22 members of Megadeth that no one knows their name, and was just there for an album and a couple tours and then gone by the time the next album came out. No, Jason was a huge part of Metallica.
I remember here in Australia Jason was a fan favourite. He was a man of the people and always used to hang around after the show talking to fans outside and signing autographs.
I don't get some of the comments here thinking that Lars and James have finally acknowledged and spoken about and Jason and his departure when they've been doing this ever since he left and got themselves checked since 2001-2003. Various interviews and Documentaries, they've been candid about him and still do to this day.
From Load to ST. Anger it was cool to put this band down and complain about their choices. It seems everyone is on the same page now that we're lucky to still have them around
In retrospect, Load and ReLoad were actually really cool. They could really GROOVE on those records, and that's something that's hard not to appreciate after listening to it after years of dismissing it for not being an 80s record.
@@ExileOnDaytonStreet its easy to hate them when you think back to their thrash days and how everything they wrote was a masterpiece, so i got the hate, but Load and Reload were full of great music it was just different music. its a shame really, people seem to only be realising nowadays how good they were.
It’s interesting, I came to the comments to say the complete opposite, hahah! I’m not familiar with his work, but it really bugged me how he kept talking over the band during the interview and at times making it more about himself rather than the record and band. The fanboy moments where he got to pile on the adulations were sweet, though! You could tell it still means a lot to the guys when they get told how much they’ve done for people.
@@violet_is_bleu It's not super frequent, but from what I perceived the purpose of the interview to be, I'll give a few examples. From the first half hour: 8:27, 16:25, 16:34, 17:26, 22:50, 24:10, 26:07, 29:31, 29:37. I know I didn't get all of them, and they're generally nothing crazy egregious, but since I'm not familiar with Zane, I'm not automatically okay with him talking over the person he's interviewing. To me he just looks like a hipster with an ego, which is probably quite far from the truth - So please forgive my ignorance. I was just kind of taken aback by how often he'd interject into the band's stories and when they're formulating their thoughts about what he'd just asked them, he might chip in with his own words to help them along. To me, that kind of goes against the point of conducting an interview.
@@MetalmcBiff well, I think he just feels comfortable around them and they do too, so they just feel more like they're having a conversation rather than a typical interview format. To each his own ✌🏻

I think it‘s really time to give more credit to rob. He is an so amazing bass player. Maybie not background singer 😂🙏🏻, but i love Robert how he looks, how he play the bass! Cool guy and not metallicas new member anymore! Lars, James, Kirk and Rob is the real final Metallica. And Burton 🙏🏻🧡 & Newsted.
I feel like they were all on the brink of tears during this interview. They have done a lot of work, come through a lot of hard places in their lives and careers. Their love and care for one another and all who helped them achieve so many milestones is so palpable.
It's interesting how they actually did mention Dave but not by name, they only called him "a past band member". He would probably feel insulted if he saw this interview, but then again, he's always unhappy about something.
Lars: "Whether you like it or not, it's 100 percent us" - Metallica in a nutshell and something that goes back to what even Cliff Burton said back in 1986 about doing things their way. With all the things this band has done it's still mindboggling that people still don't get that and have the audacity to say what they have done in the last 30 years is not Metallica. Further proof that some fans simply never got it.
They would have gone down this same musical path even if Cliff hadn't passed. He loved all kinds of music and he loved to experiment. He didn't want to go 200 miles an hour on every album, and RTL and MOP are proof of that. All Metallica albums are different and unique in their own way, there is something for everyone.
Amazing interview, got goose bumps during the Jason bit, he was the shining beacon during the dark times, fans could always sense that, good that the band finally acknowledges this publicly!
48:32 made me tear up. Straight after that 50:48 made me laugh out loud. Through their highs and their lows this band has always been true to themselves and through that true to us as fans. This was such a great interview. Such a great conversation. I love you Metallica for being there through my highs and my lows and this video shows on such a deep level why it's so easy to respect and love them as a band. And I haven't even mentioned the music...
They should do their next album with their 2 bassists Jason and Rob. This would close their legacy with their diehard fans on a positive note. Seeing Jason there with them would be awesome.
Awesome I was hoping this would be on RUclips!! Great feature with Metallica! I love how the group is always sharing pro live footage of their concerts to be viewed on RUclips, most groups don't that especially regularly like Metallica!
i was 9 years old when my older brother brought me to the record store and i bought And Justice For All. Hearing Lars,James and Kirk speak about Jason hits home, he was my favorite if you could have a favorite.
That was an awesome tour in 93 when Suicidal opened for Metallica, seen it in Vegas. Rob Halford's band FIGHT was also on that tour along with Candlebox. I'll never forget James walking on stage and hitting the riff for Breadfan, followed by the rest of the band. Amazing experience!👍
I was witness to Metallica LIVE at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1986, first concert after Cliff's passing, first live concert with Jason as the NEW bass player. He tripped on his bass chord walking up the steps near the drum riser and played bass while on his back... There are video's on YT :) Zane needs to interview Jason, if only to gain his perspective of those 14 years, if only after.
These guys were role models for me as a teen. Our band learned and played a lot of their songs. It’s so great to see and hear their story and their thoughts. Time goes by so fast. But these guys are still going. They are still the same, only better :)
I’m glad they spoke about the positive effect St. Anger had on them. I love that album, and it’s understandable if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s an album that has now made Metallica who they are, and it’s nice to see that they appreciate what the album has given them
Spectacular to hear the openness about Jason but let's not overlook how great it was to hear the "new" elephant in the room with Rob. I've never heard him get so much air time on the subject and it was awesome to hear his thoughts.
Isn't it funny how all the bass players that have played for Metallica are the most disciplined and stable members of the band? I think being able to be the glue that keeps everything from falling apart is just as important as being the frontman or the lead player in any band.
Finally saw them live last night and wow...I admired/loved them before, but that and then FINALLY getting the chance to sit and watch this properly. They're just so amazing. I love that they talked so well about what happened with Jason as well and I'm glad they're still good with each other.

@@4md17 Yes. They love him and want to embrace him but at the same time they lost a dear friend and they were still in that grieving process so it's hard to let new people in when you're grieving. Especially if they're taking over the part that the deceased loved one used to play. I can totally understand where he came from when he said that tbh.
These guys are my heros. They aren't perfect which makes them perfect.
nobody is "perfect", so everyone is>!??!
@@morbidmanmusic Yup. Perfect is boring.
Well said
True legends
I've been growing up with this band since I was 15...I'm now almost 49, and my love, respect and admiration for their authenticity, and music continues to grow. I hope that everyone finds a band like this that offers them such happiness. Long live METALLICA.
Zayne leading an absolute master class in interviewing a band. Amazing work.
Been a big fan since I was 13. This band gives me hope to live. I started listening to Metal and learned to play guitar because of this legendary band. Greatest Metal band ever.
👍👍👍🤟😎
@Life Is Peachy It's subjective. For me i put them above Preist, Maiden, Sabbath and Megadeth. No one can argue with me about it and I've listened to all these bands. No one has been as influential as Metallica.
Да. Я впервые услышал Металлику в 1995 году и стал их фанатом буквально за день)) В 2019 году , на мощном концерте в Москве, поймал медиатор от Джеймса))

These guys got me in the music I'm right there with you . Sad but true was my first song just a 5 year old kid mindblown been hooked since
When James said, "We love you but you're not Cliff" that just broke me.
Maybe we'll see Jason with the band again when Metallica celebrates their 40th anniversary, similar to what they have done with their 30th anniversary.
james always find excuse for everything his done wrong in life. bla bla, Cliff die, bla bla, i was drinking, bla bla, Jason wasnt Cliff... patetic... i dont think he was ever sorry for anything.. lars is diferent and i think that he is better person then james. james is a robot without any regrets, he is just saying this for fans and people dont hate on him
It would be great if the band could talk about Kirk's contribution to their music in glowing terms, or really just at all, like they did with Rob. Without Kirk's solos I'm not sure the 2nd - 4th albums would be iconic as they are, especially with songs like Fade, RtL, One etc plus he wrote the Sandman riff! Give the guy some respect
Don't forget the sick riff he wrote for Creeping Death and the awesome bassline he wrote for Cliff in Orion.
“The documentary was ahead of its time” Metallica has always been ahead 💪🏻
Thanks to Kirk for expressing his emotions about Jason, couldnt have said it better.
28:30 James: it’s like getting a girlfriend that’s too young
Lars: visibly reflecting about his 37 year old wife
And James look at Kirk, Kirk also had a 38 year old gf lol.

Hahahahahaha! He totally was
@@imranhakim1351 Kirk's been married many many years.
Rob belongs in Metallica, I just cannot see anyone else who could have fit into this band. He gave me band a second wind as far as getting back to the basics and making music that is a mix of the first 5 classic albums.
They have got to be the most filmed band in history. I've been following them since the 80's. It's so awesome to see them still going strong.
Dude I have so much respect to Kirk and letting the heart bleed out his feelings toward Jason and me personally never really heard this side of the story when Jason came along. Met4Life boys.
This is one of the best interviews I’ve seen of them. Open. Honest and at peace with themselves.
Screw everything else, you dont see conversations like this on media. Meaningful, real and just human.
Say what you want about Metallica, but if this interview was 20 hours long, I still would have listened to every second of it. All these guys are worth almost a billion $$$ combined and the amount of humbleness shown here telling their own personal stories, this is really a reflection of how people should go about their lives.
Jason is great part of metallica history.
Every time I see these guys I love them more and more. It goes so much deeper than the music.
I remember here in Australia Jason was a fan favourite. He was a man of the people and always used to hang around after the show talking to fans outside and signing autographs.
The feels when Kirk talks about Cliff and Jason
I don't get some of the comments here thinking that Lars and James have finally acknowledged and spoken about and Jason and his departure when they've been doing this ever since he left and got themselves checked since 2001-2003. Various interviews and Documentaries, they've been candid about him and still do to this day.
James always had that dad laugh from the gut man. I love it.
Couldn’t fine this on Apple Music, but youtube has it. Go figure.

I do miss Jason but it make so happy to know now there is peace love and respect with Jason
From Load to ST. Anger it was cool to put this band down and complain about their choices. It seems everyone is on the same page now that we're lucky to still have them around
Still love Load and Reload. So different. But so good.
All their new albums are still bad. Except lulu, that had some good riffs on it.

Got to admit, hearing them talk about Jason brought a tear to my eye.

Zane is a wonderful interviewer. Respecting every artist he's talking to without interrupting and asking each member questions.
i agree completely.. as an interviewer, Zane is a unicorn! He is one of the best interviewers i've seen.
@@MetalmcBiff I watched the whole interview, where did he interrupt? He was just commenting on their responses to his questions.
To each his own ✌🏻
The voice of James is so wonderful. Makes goosebumping. The band is so honestly and identical. I love all Interviews with the boys. I love Metallica forever. 💓💓💓💓🙏
Yeah Rob is awesome.... in the new vids Rob is doing some pretty good background vocals.
@@mdub2000 - yes that is true too!
@@jwostrowe8953 - your words Are so right man! To me the Clifftallica, Newstedtallica and Robertotallica is Metallica 🙏🏻.
I think he's had the longest tenure of any bass player in Metallica iinm
I feel like they were all on the brink of tears during this interview. They have done a lot of work, come through a lot of hard places in their lives and careers. Their love and care for one another and all who helped them achieve so many milestones is so palpable.
A lesson for journalists that a good Metallica interview is actually possible without necessarily mentioning Napster, rehab, Mustaine or family life.
Haha yea
It's interesting how they actually did mention Dave but not by name, they only called him "a past band member". He would probably feel insulted if he saw this interview, but then again, he's always unhappy about something.
It still blows my mind that Rob has been in the band almost 20 years. Time just flies now. Garage Inc. still seems new to me.
Well said my friend......been a fan since August of 1987....I was 5 then, 40 years old now and still flying the MetallicA flag.
1:02:00 hahaha and James falling off the couch... my adolescent heart rejoices :D
Makes me so happy seeing this. My favourite band stronger than ever! Very inspiring
Best Metallica interview ever, everyone manages to talk their thoughts out.
They should do their next album with their 2 bassists Jason and Rob. This would close their legacy with their diehard fans on a positive note. Seeing Jason there with them would be awesome.
Imagine being this cozy and interviewing Metallica. How cool is that?
I am not a huge Metallica fan but it was very enjoyable to hear what these mature artists had to say, very enlightening!
I Entered with Sandman in '91 and Never left. Greatest performers for me in life.

I see what you did there.
Be grateful for these guys. It won’t last forever which was proved when Rush sadly ended so abruptly and tragically.
Props to the interviewer. He egged on some really engaging convos and asked great questions.
Amazing experience!👍
this is honestly the best interview done with metallica i’ve ever seen. great interviewer, really good stuff 🙌
I was witness to Metallica LIVE at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1986, first concert after Cliff's passing, first live concert with Jason as the NEW bass player. He tripped on his bass chord walking up the steps near the drum riser and played bass while on his back... There are video's on YT :)
Zane needs to interview Jason, if only to gain his perspective of those 14 years, if only after.
*15 years.. he left in 2001...
I love that album, and it’s understandable if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s an album that has now made Metallica who they are, and it’s nice to see that they appreciate what the album has given them
love kirk. so honest and sensitive
Spectacular to hear the openness about Jason but let's not overlook how great it was to hear the "new" elephant in the room with Rob. I've never heard him get so much air time on the subject and it was awesome to hear his thoughts.
This really is one of the best interviews with the whole band that I heard everybody is responding
What a wonderful interview! Also great to hear Rob talk for a change, lol
he talked?
The whole band has been ahead of it's time. James was already an icon to me. He become 5 times larger in opening up about his struggles.
Isn't it funny how all the bass players that have played for Metallica are the most disciplined and stable members of the band? I think being able to be the glue that keeps everything from falling apart is just as important as being the frontman or the lead player in any band.
I have never heard this interviewer before. Probably the best artist interview I’ve ever heard. Very organic and genuine.
This is an excellent interview. Refreshing change from Howard "Interrupt Your Guests Constantly" Stern.
Finally saw them live last night and wow...I admired/loved them before, but that and then FINALLY getting the chance to sit and watch this properly. They're just so amazing. I love that they talked so well about what happened with Jason as well and I'm glad they're still good with each other.
Great interview Zane Lowe did a great job clearly a true fan of Metallica asked the good questions and kept conversations going this was nice
I think they should do a 40th part two with Jason.
Jason gave all his 100 percent for Metallica so much energy on the stage backing vocals and so on..Love this guys, so much respect and love for Jason as a light on their darkest time when cliff's gone🤘❤️

The most down to earth and honest conversation ever with these guys.
what i really liked was how kirk finally said what it meant jason leaving
and how valuable he was at that time...
james didnt say much cuz he realized how he could of handled that alot better but 20yrs to late
ant to this day jason remains hurt on how they just let him walk after everything they had been thru
an all jason was really doing was keeping busy with his echo brain album while they were off takin a break and goin thru rehab!
i always liked jason and what he brought to every show.
to me metallica lost somthing the day jason left.
rob isnt bad an he is a nice guy..
but jason was the perfect replacement for cliff.
So true. Take the way that AC/DC treated Brian Johnson when Bon Scott died. They embraced and treated him good. I understand that they missed Cliff but that was no excuse to treat such a nice guy like Jason the way they did. It’s quite sad really. But they live and learn. Good for them.
When talking about Jason to hear James say "we love you but your not cliff" hits pretty deep.
Quando a banda veio pela primeira vez no Brasil . Eu tive o privilégio de trabalhar para a montagem do show.
E ver o show escutar a banda ao vivo foi uma das melhores experiência que tive ..

These folks have a lot of depth when they talk. Shows in their songs too.
There is a reason they became so successful.
