  • A couple notes about this video...
    1. My studio is very small, meaning we're pretty much on top of each other while recording. I have a close family member with a compromised immune system, so for their protection, we decided to wear masks while tracking this. This is by no means a political statement or an invitation to debate the effectiveness of mask-wearing. It was a personal choice and I'm not telling anyone what they should do.
    2. Yes... we know we changed the arrangement. The ultimate goal of this session was to create a backing track for my live stream shows, so we tailored the arrangement for that specific use. We also recorded the majority of this on a live stream and cutting out certain parts made that run smoother.
Now that we got that out of the way, enjoy the video!
This is our cover of Siberian Khatru by Yes from the Close To The Edge Album
    Ann Marie Nacchio - Vocals
Richie Castellano - Vocals, Guitar, Bass
Andy Ascolese - Keyboards, Drums, Percussion
Andy Graziano - Special Guest Guitar Solo
Additional Keys by Richie - Special thanks to Thomas Barra and BARxMusic for pointing out that Andy and I were missing a couple of synth parts! I played them in post, off camera. You can check him out here - / nbpianoman
    Geek Speak:
Drums are recorded using the Roland TD-11 eDrum set. Drum sounds come from FXPansion BFD 3.
Bass is a 1974 Rickenbacker 4001. We recorded the stereo Rick-O-Sound outputs into the DI ins on the Universal Audio 4710-D. The bass is being processed through the Line 6 Helix Native and various Waves Plugins.
The Guitar is Gibson 336 that I borrowed from my dad. All the the guitar tones come from the Line 6 Helix.
The sitar sound comes from the Line 6 Variax.
The slide guitar is a Fender road worn tele with DiMarzio pickups.
The acoustic guitar is a Martin D-15 M.
The acoustic instruments and vocals are recorded with an Audio Technica AT-4047MP into an API 512c preamp into a DBX 560A compressor.
We use a Roland FA-06 keyboard along with a lot of sounds from IK Multimedia Sonik Synth 2.
Ann Marie's vocal is recorded with an Audio Technica 4047 into an SSL 2 plus.
We all use Audio Technica Headphones.
All of the vocals are doubled off camera to save some screen real estate.
The cape was made by my Nana when I was in high school : )

At 18 years old a friend dragged me to see Yes (in the round) in 1978 and they opened with this song. At the time I was a Jimmy Page sycophant and didn't even know what prog rock was. When they opened with Siberian Khatru I had that John Belushi, church scene in the Blues Brothers, "sees the light" moment. Next thing you know I'm into all things British Prog Rock. To this day I still listen to Gentle Giant, old Genesis, old Yes, Brand X, Bill Brufford, ELP, etc. It all started with this song and you guys did an absolute outstanding job on this!

Mind blowing. Love the arrangement, most of Yes would probably agree. The guitar tones in particular are great, not too much distortion/compression which is what you hear with a lot of Yes cover bands, they have an 80s distortion going on when back in the 70s Steve Howe was playing really pretty clean. And Ann Marie has the voice of an angel. I grew up with Yes, other prog, just love hearing the music being kept alive.

Okay, so right now it lists "69,987 views," but I've been dipping back into this video over and over for several days now. So maybe discount it by ten or twenty. Ha! I'm generally not a fan of covers of music I love, because usually the outcome is only a "reference" to the original. What Band Geeks does with Yes ("Siberian Khatru," "Close to the Edge," "Heart of the Sunrise," etc.) is to match it so well, with such intimacy, and such superb vocals, that I honestly feel these are improvements over the originals -- which I had no idea weren't absolutely perfect! Aside from all the great musicianship and production, truly, it is the vocals that lifts these covers to "better than perfect." The voice is such a unique instrument that that is usually the part of any cover that "gives it away." Ann Marie as Jon Anderson is brilliant, and Richie nails the backing vocals and harmonies. Further: special recognition is owed to Andy Ascolese, who holds mastery over both keyboards and drums; his skill and performance on two very different instruments is astounding.
And as many have also noted, this is the music of my high school days in the 1970s, so every single nook, cranny, and nuance of this song (and all the pre-1973 Yes) is deep in my soul, and you guys transcend it to the point of bringing this 61-year-old to tears. (Youngsters, you'll learn: crying comes surprisingly easily at your late fifties.) Thank you so much for all your talent, dedication, and your ... transcendental exquisiteness!

That was incredible!! Those electric guitar sounds are nailed perfect! Thank you!! And the whole thing is so on. And those vocal melodies ok the chorus are so beautiful. And Boris: wow! BTW: The parts you omitted… the only bummer is that I was curious to see how much more perfect you could make them (lol!). Thank you VERY much for performing so beautifully! Much love sent to all of you! ❤️🎶

I came to RUclips to look up a microwave repair vid and thought I'd just put on some prog while browsing. What! The Band Geeks have done another Yes cover? The microwave can wait! I literally laughed out loud when I saw 'Rick' wearing that green cape! Superb, as always, and despite the slightly different arrangement. I was 66 yesterday, so a great birthday present. Thanks all.

The amount of movement on the bass was spot on,... the guitars,... spectacular! Keyboards, drums and vocals tight and clear! Capes! Check! The Harmonies to die for! When you listen as a whole you realize just how important Chris Squires bass sound is to YES,... (I miss him),... it adds a solid foundation, yet weaves throughout the composition like a force shield keeping it moving forward tripping along the with the drums! GAWDDAMN that was good,... the scat vocals at the end gave me chills,... keeping on the beat ain't easy! You and I would be a great follow up! And if you're feeling extra ambitious,... the whole Tales from Topographic Oceans,... BEST ALBUM OF ALL TME! Nobody makes music like that anymore. I have tried,... I'm 3 songs into it!

Just watched this again. The current observation is that Richie appears to be putting forth every ounce of his focus and concentration on his vocal parts, and you know, they sound great. Anne Marie on the other hand, looks relaxed and even seems to be having fun with it, and blows it out of the water. As I say this, if I were singing it, I'd look a lot more like Richie, so I certainly don't mean to pass any judgement. It's just, there are singers, and than there are SINGAH's!

If I hadn't just watched and listened to this, I wouldn't have believed it. I became very familiar with the "Close to the Edge" album listening on headphones dozens of times in '73 (and for the next almost-50 years). Thanks for the care in getting virtually everything, including the authentic instrument sounds and harmonies, right. Everyone here is just outstanding.

I've been listening to this song since CTTE first came out and I just learned a few weeks ago that the repeated keyboard riff at the beginning was played on a mellotron. I can really tell here.
The Band of Geeks are incredibly talented musicians. Love all their covers and the fact that they can all play multiple instruments.

WOW! Amazing cover, in many parts better than the original (I’ve the album...). I really enjoyed the “making of” videos too and the final result is spectacular. I fully endorse the “nuclear option” on vocals. Ann Marie voice is phenomenal! Andy Graziano’s solo is a gem and Andy’s drumming and keyboards are smooth as silk and better than the original, IMHO... and of course your guitar and bass playing, Richie, is honey for my ears....

You are all so great. This is a song I have been listening to for 40 years off and on all the way back to my early teenage years where I was one of the few who enjoyed Yes amongst my friends. Being a guitar player myself (a bad one with a tin ear!) I have always wondered how Steve Howe did these parts. It is such a pleasure to enjoy all the hard work you put into making this and I especially love to see how the song is played across all the instruments. It really makes me enjoy the original that much more (especially the Yessongs one). Bravo. Bravo. Bravo.

I suspect most Yes cover bands are better than the current Yes line up. I saw ARW a few years back and they were leaps and bounds better than Yes.
This is another level. I watched the making of videos Richie did over the last couple of weeks. A real eye opener for an oldie like me. Music production is very different than it was in the 70s. I honestly think this is as good as (and in some ways better than) the original Fragile version.
