I love black coffee, but if someone likes milk and sugar and wants to drink it nearly white from all the extra stuff, do it. Let people love what they love, and connect over the things you share a love for.
I'm not a barista, but in the event that this dream is fulfilled someday, I have a multilingual coffee shop playlist ready to go! I love the idea of slipping in a song or two in various languages, and having a customer perk up from unexpectedly hearing their heart language :')
Totally appreciate that black coffee talk about liking milk and sugar too. There’s such a coffee snobbery culture in Portland that made me always too scared to get into coffee. Also, how did I not know you were in Portland this whole time. I only realize this when I saw the Coava coffee bean bag, then I wondered if you were in Portland, so I rewinded to see the cityscape.
Well I like my coffee black, but I also am a pilot that works odd hours and just need a wake up drink, and it’s too much effort for lackluster taste for the plane coffee to add packages of sugar and god only knows what creamer. Ohh, and if you live in pdx I fly for Alaska right now as of this post so I totally understand the culture issues with coffee there.
The White Stag didn't give it away? lol I didn't live in Portland for too long, but I never felt looked down upon for ordering a non-black coffee from any place. I usually just get a standard latte when I'm out but was always impressed with the dairy free options at Seven Virtues on both Hawthorne and Sandy! Any place serving Coava gets a thumbs up from me.
I only started watching her yesterday (I don't have TikTok because I'm Old and Out Of The Loop) when the "trying out 5-minute crafts coffee hacks" came up on my recommended, since I've been really into those "trying/debunking hacks" videos. Next video I watched was "finding the best grocery store iced coffee" and I had my suspicions when I saw the Fred Meyer bag ("is she in the PNW?") and the 971 area code at the end ("that's a Portland number!") but when I watched this video last night my suspicions were confirmed lol.
there's a playlist called snowy mornings in a "coffee shop somewhere" and its wonderful, also when I need to "be up early" i get up at 3:33 cuz that's a fun number
I found Morgan's channel after I left my Starbucks post. I probably would have said the same, tried it for a shift, and then a bunch awful customers would have ruined it.
@@RenayOpish we are forced to be nice. Theres literally a customer connection score and depending on the store we can get in trouble for not keeping the drive through window open and not talking to customers.
I can definitely relate to what you said about milk-based coffee. I see a good amount of people who always take shots at people who enjoy milk-based drinks. It’s good to hear an actual barista respond to something like this.
As a barista I love opening the coffee shop in the morning! as well! It's a very calming feeling when it's just me preparing everything without anyone around and making sure that everything is set up for customers :)
You make me miss my barista days so much! Ahhh it's lovely watching your videos! I think black coffee is something you can do at home and the only reason to drink black coffee at a coffee shop is if they have some amazing brew you can't afford to buy or can't access to buy for home use. A coffee shop is where they have all of the equipment and expertise you don't have at home for incredible coffee creations! That's my take anyway.
@@slipshodaverage844 Not that weird. Although you might not be doing it for this reason, hot drinks can cool you down. In dry places, drinking the hot drink causes you to sweat and in turn cool off. This is why people often drink hot drinks in middle eastern countries during the hot days.
God, that reminds me of the times I was having a little part-time job at a local caffé. I miss it so much, but now I am studying at a Uni and I have zero time to have a part-time job. For 3 years I worked as a barista at the siren main chain that shall not be named. It was some of the best and worst memories I have. I worked all the shifts and this video is full of nostalgia for me. Do I enjoy coffee and working with professional equipment and space? Yes. Do I enjoy the coffee culture? Also yes. Do I miss the grind (pun intended)? No. But I do love watching others fighting the good fight. I'm very impressed that after being successful on RUclips you continue to work in a shop.
Thank you so much for acknowledging that it is okay to drink your coffee with milk and sugar. I have had the « you don’t truly like coffee you like sugar and milk » and it means a lot to have approval from an actual barista
it's such a weird thing to say. Imagine if people were like this about anything else. "if you like Whiskey sour, you don't actually like whiskey, you like lemon juice and sugar" "if you like apple pie, you don't actually like apples. you like pie crust and cinnamon". It doesn't make any sense. You like the combination of a certain set of flavors. all of the flavors are important to make it what it is.
Wish you were in the UK so I could come try one of your creations. People really don't appreciate the work that goes into that coffee or appreciate the actual person making it. I was lucky enough that on a bad bad day a barista at a place I had only really been into once before somehow saw I was down and when I ordered my flat white via her colleague just decided to make it as a teddy bear for the latte art. Most beautiful thing iv ever seen and boy did it make me smile and made my day. I didn't say thanks personally, I should have, but I did express my amazement and after speaking with the owner on instagram we worked out who it was that made my drink and I brought in a £150 gift card for her as a thank you. 6 months later I'm there every morning same time every day and yep, I still get the occasional teddy bear art lol and we all have a nice chat. The moral of my ramblings - appreciate the person making that drink for you. They might be having just as bad a day as you are but they have to smile through it and all the abuse they get and STILL sometimes they'll take the time to make your day for next to no thanks at all.
Being a current barista, can totally relate to this video. Biggest difference is that I have to be there at 430am (so 330am wake up call). We like putting on '80's pop from Spotjfy. Last yr for Women's History Month in March, Spotjfy had a great playlist celebrating it (customers and staff were jamming to it); something for everyone featuring female artists. If I can find it, I'll share.
I work at a coffee shop and music stations we play vary throughout the day, but some of our staple stations are Sylvan Esso, Earth Wind & Fire, Maggie Rogers, UMI, Cage the Elephant, and Leon Bridges! just depends on time of day/vibe of the cafe :)
Opening shifts were always the favorite during my barista days. I took GREAT care making sure the pastry case looked top notch every time. It's strange that even after more than 15 years I still remember some of the drinks I'd have ready by the time we opened the doors, for the regulars who always started their days at our store.
Ugh I miss being able to go to my local café and knit! I remember being able to sit there, have a coffee latte or chai latte. My local cafe started knowing my order at one point lol

I relate to you on the bags. I use to work at a coffee shop before covid started (had to leave due to pay cuts and college loans) The way we got around it was tape and covering the bag with the date on at least 2 sides if not 4.
Fantastic video Morgan! Opening shifts are great and my favorite playlist is based on Morcheeba. Their a British trip-hop group. One of the pioneers of the genre back in the 90's but still active today. Skye's vocals are amazing and it's very chill. I highly recommend their breakthrough album "The Big Calm".
Hi Morgan!!!! Personally, I really enjoy listening to disco music whenever I’m working (I’m a barista as well), disco is high energy and carefree and it just reminds me to roll with the punches and the usually fast tempo gets me energized and ready for whipping up drinks quickly and efficiently. 🥰
I know it seems pretty typical, but I love listening to clarinet jazz music in the morning. You get a lot of variety between energetic and calm songs and clarinet is majorly unappreciated.
If you need a video idea, could you go through the process of staying organized while busy/time saving tricks that you've picked up? I recently started at a high volume cafe and I feel so slow
i am not particularly interested in coffee (though love the new knowledge I get), but the vibe of your videos is so chill and relaxing and soothing, I find myself listening to you talk about coffee in the background while I work! Thank you, Morgan! Great content!
When I moved to Washington being able to drink black coffee was like a right of passage (with my coworker)😅 I too feel like I've done my time and have given myself permission to drink yummy creamy drinks again. I think black coffee is perfect when you're backpacking ☺️
try playing with single origin coffee's and spices from the same region -- ground in with the coffee grinds add a small dash of sugar if you like. Works best with pours-overs, but you could try steaming the spices in a tea bag with the milk (lower fat milks work better) if you're an espresso die-hard :P You will thank me if you try something from vietnam or south america. ;P

Hey, Morgan. One station I loved to play whenever I was alone at the shop in the morning, was Late Night Alumni on Pandora and Spotify. Helped me stay chill while I wake up.
4:49 ''I think it's really hopeful...'' YES! Except you don't think but you know it will be helpful. When I was a chef in this one coffee shop, those drainage from the coffee station will go to the kitchen. One time, the night shift kitchen forgot to clean it up and it already smells horrible and I saw some maggots. Absolutely helpful to pour down hot water down the drain. Pour it more if you have the time
You are such a kind and caring person who obviously cares about coffee and people in general. The rhythm and cadence of your voice is relaxing and real. I've been a coffee lover for years but only just recently got into the "what" and "how" to make a good cup of coffee. Thank you for all of your videos. And gimme one of those Nutella pies. :-9
Love your energy and videos! One thing, just as someone who has worked as a barista for a while... you don't need to leave your wands in a cleaning solution overnight! Its actually bad for your gaskets. Clean them at night, dump your solution down the drain (like you did), and leave your wands either "dry" or in plain water :)
Why there is not container to hold the grinded coffee at 08:10 then transfer it to that handle thing, also to measure coffee , you have to throw it away every time if it is extra, you can keep a pot and spoon, so that you can add from it or dump in it and it is not wasted, saw this trick in Laura Angelia 's youtube, seems efficient
Enjoyed. Thanks for filming this example. Everything you spoke and showed was a curiosity about Cafes. I honestly think this is borderline an enjoyable training video.
When pulling shots first thing in the morning I would drink every little bit of it, and then a little extra because I always made myself a drink as well. You can never be too caffeinated!
I’ve wanted to work at a coffee shop since I was a kid, and finally this year, I was old enough to apply.... then COVID hit and that didn’t happen... so I’m totally living vicariously though you!
So refreshing to see someone who loves and has such a passion for what they do! Only wish we had someone like that at our local coffee shop. The sneaks are awesome, my wife loves the look of them so we'll be checking them out. My I recommend Velvet Moon for you listening enjoyment. A fav is Wicked One. Keep these videos coming we enjoy watching them. Cheers!!
Just subscribed to your channel. I love your vids, and your vibe Morgan. I am on the East Coast in the South, we too have Coffee shops other than Starbucks( believe it or not). You make art in a cup, and your narration of your day, and your passion for what you do is fascinating. As romantic as you make it look, it has to be stressful when it gets busy. Thank you for sharing.
when I work at the coffee shop, I go for Guster- "Satellite" radio for some easy listening, upbeat music to open with. That and an Abuelita iced mocha got me through so many challenging days!
Is there a guideline as to what music to play or what not to? This really interests me a lot cuz most cafes that I have been to have similar “cafe vibes” in them tho their playlists are usually quite different
Glass Animals radio is my shiiiii 🙌🏻 I loved this video, such a mood! Can you do like an espresso 101 video? Maybe talking about brew times and brew methods, tamping, flavoring, etc? And maybe a coffee tasting kinda video where you talk about origins and roasts and flavor profiles? I wanna know it alllll! ☕️
Wish I had a barista in my area like you. You are fantastic, and just had to say, love the way you make your "4", never seen it that way. Keep the video coming. Thx
I love hearing someone say you don't have to drink coffee black to enjoy it! I've actually gotten to a point of enjoying black coffee with my poor over, but for me espresso I'm still at the sugar and milk stage
Your apron is pretty similar to the extremely well made Saint Anthony Industries aprons. Huge fan of those aprons- they are truly buy it for life level stuff. Little pricey but well made.
Seeing this video makes me inspired to be a barista. I actually jsut came acroos on your video "How to use a french press at home" since I jsut got a new one and is new to making coffee this way, but I dk drink coffee on a daily basis and it got me wondering what other ways I can enjoy coffee. This badly makes me want to be a barista soooo bad. Love your hair and outfit, too!💖 Keep insipiring people!💖
I just started watching your channel and I have to say I love it sm! Your voice is so soothing and your videos are always interesting! I had no idea that the whole espresso thing was sooo complicated and such a science! Anyways you’re amazing!
just wanted to ask, which of the 2 coffee places do/did you like working at more? (not sure if you've worked at more than the two youtube knows of) i'm a barista at a coffee place (well, it's more like a bookshop that has a coffee place in it) in Slovakia and a lot of the equipment that you used in the previous job is the same as it is at my job, so that was really fun seeing!
As a barista myself, I totally understand and agree to your point that you are free to drink whatever you want. Add milk, sugar, syrup or whatever you like, because ... it's what you like. As long as the customers or the others love your drink, there should not be any issue. This is a free world. At the part where you threw away the first couple shots from the grinder, I assume you do not use the chemical to clean the coffee machine right? Cuz normally, I would use those waste shots to wash out the left over chemicals in the machine.
Hey Morgan, i love your videos! There is one think that would help you black coffee taste better - if you wet the filter (for the filter coffee), the coffee would have less cardboard aftertaste.
Ah.. sure do miss coffee shops. Also digging on the coava bag redesign. Don't think I've seen those yet. For music, I really dig Läpsley in the mornings. :)
Awesome video! Any chance we can get the recipe for that awesome drink? Lol Three stations currently: 1) Earth, wind and Fire 2) Artic Monkeys 3) Reik(Spanish) Thanks again for the video!
Love it, the aesthetic and atmosphere is just so calm and wholesome 🥰 I work in a tea store/café in Germany and me and some coleagues made custom playlists - mine is lots of folk, jazz, Beatles and a dash of indie (also some Amy Winehouse) :3
Totally different music recommendation for you: Try setting it on KQAC--NPR, but all music. All classical. For me, that's meditative music. But I'm weird (and damn proud of it!). I realize it's not the kind of music that stimulates customer turnover, but it sets a tone for the place.
Hi, Morgan! That's a neat little place. RIght now, I'm sipping on a cold brew with half & half that I made; using the plain Starbucks concentrate. Viva coffee! ☕
I have been listening to Nickel Creek Radio on Spotify. First heard of them in a coffee house in Portland. Miles over Mountains is another, but definitely an afternoon time station.
I've seen this Tiktok that shows you can actually flip the remaining fabric of the turtleneck on the inside instead of flip it on the outside. The fabric around the neck I mean. It look more stylish in my opinion. Maybe you should try it since you love to wear them and could look good on you. I wish to wear them but in my constantly hot climate country, it's just not functional.
I always saw you in TikTok only! Now I discovered your RUclips and listened to your voice, I went OH GOD you have great hair, eyes and VOICE?????? 🥺🥺🥺🥺
for my opening shifts i like to listen to something smooth and easy for the morning. typically the kali uchis station, sometimes whitney houston or mariah carey radio, more recently i've been listening to joyce wrice, and if no one is paying attention, i'll slip in some southeast asian pop/rnb/alt rock/oldies just for me :)

you do not know how long I've been secretly wanting one of these. Thank you! your a true barista icon :)
Please take this as a compliment. I have no interest in the topic but the way you interact with the camera then narrate it later fascinated me.
I just woke up so I feel like I’m getting ready for the day w/ you :) this was a really nice video, ty!!
Oh man I’m also in that’s stage of “I’ve done my time” with the black coffee thing😩✊🏻 hit me with that nice oat milk cap😂
Just loved this one! So enjoyed seeing all about "how it's done" and your wonderful loveliness :) We all need this bit of easy-going cheerfulness
I've been loving this playlist on spotify called Crooners and Cocktails - a nice vibe
the Linea Classic, first espresso machine i've ever used.. felt in love with it's simplicity and design
Absolutely love the progress you've made Morgan 😁
Why there is not container to hold the grinded coffee at 08:10 then transfer it to that handle thing, also to measure coffee , you have to throw it away every time if it is extra, you can keep a pot and spoon, so that you can add from it or dump in it and it is not wasted, saw this trick in Laura Angelia 's youtube, seems efficient
These are my favourites, thank you for a little joy today :)
Enjoyed. Thanks for filming this example. Everything you spoke and showed was a curiosity about Cafes. I honestly think this is borderline an enjoyable training video.
Wow! It's so amazing to see the amount of detail and care that goes into each drink ☕
I don't know why, but I love hearing your voice...its lovely. thanks for showing up your Opening shift!
when I work at the coffee shop, I go for Guster- "Satellite" radio for some easy listening, upbeat music to open with. That and an Abuelita iced mocha got me through so many challenging days!
I work at a bakery that opens at 6am and my go to for the opening shifts (which is every shift for me) is anything Etta James!
This was a very enjoyable video to watch. It seemed like as soon as it started it was over. That is the mark of a great video. Thanks, Morgan!
Lo-fi & jazz hop are my go-to genres for work!
How much passion is in this video.
I am watching this right after coming home from an exhausting shift at the café I work at and I still find this video so relaxing:)
Awesome video! Love how fluffy and clump free the espresso grinder is dosing. The little things that make a world of difference 🤓
Love your hair and outfit, too!💖 Keep insipiring people!💖
The music I LOVE to play when I get a turn on shift is Boyce Avenue. They do some awesome covers!
(not sure if you've worked at more than the two youtube knows of)
i'm a barista at a coffee place (well, it's more like a bookshop that has a coffee place in it) in Slovakia and a lot of the equipment that you used in the previous job is the same as it is at my job, so that was really fun seeing!
I listen to Cosmo Sheldrake and half alive at work. I also think I'd love to hear Monsieur Periné at a coffee shop!
Every. Single. Video... is just so cozy and cute I love it
Love to know what you're twisting on the portafilter before tamping, i do shots at my work and i've never seen that before!
You are not alone!! The amount of times I have assumed stocking meant rotating product also...suffice to say many a wrong bag has been opened
Hey Morgan, i love your videos! There is one think that would help you black coffee taste better - if you wet the filter (for the filter coffee), the coffee would have less cardboard aftertaste.
I’ve been really enjoying Turnover “peripheral vision” at work.
Ah.. sure do miss coffee shops. Also digging on the coava bag redesign. Don't think I've seen those yet. For music, I really dig Läpsley in the mornings. :)
Thanks Morgan for the video, You make it look easy, I'm just a beginner, I've been using semi skimmed but you recommend whole milk, I will try that
Awesome video! Any chance we can get the recipe for that awesome drink? Lol
Three stations currently:
1) Earth, wind and Fire
2) Artic Monkeys
3) Reik(Spanish)
Thanks again for the video!
Love it, the aesthetic and atmosphere is just so calm and wholesome 🥰 I work in a tea store/café in Germany and me and some coleagues made custom playlists - mine is lots of folk, jazz, Beatles and a dash of indie (also some Amy Winehouse) :3
Great video!! Makes me miss my barista days... Those house-made syrups looked amazing!!
nice nice niiice , earned 'like' straight away just for the classic internal designs and my fav choices of grinder and machine brands.
Totally different music recommendation for you: Try setting it on KQAC--NPR, but all music. All classical. For me, that's meditative music. But I'm weird (and damn proud of it!). I realize it's not the kind of music that stimulates customer turnover, but it sets a tone for the place.
Glad this video is giving Coava coffee the representation it deserves!
Nice! I use almost the exact same espresso machine at my Barista job. Just has 3 groups instead of two.
I love the opening shift the most. I mostly listen to pop punk music on my shifts, for reference I work in a coffee cart.
Life go on... make good use the time & people you meet.
Greetings from Malaysia
I just put my notice in at my cafe and it's such a bittersweet thing.
I absolutely love the aesthetic of this cafe! really wish there was a place like this near me.
You've become my favorite barista. Did not skip any second of the video. Just lovely. :-)
for my opening shifts i like to listen to something smooth and easy for the morning. typically the kali uchis station, sometimes whitney houston or mariah carey radio, more recently i've been listening to joyce wrice, and if no one is paying attention, i'll slip in some southeast asian pop/rnb/alt rock/oldies just for me :)
