I have an interview at a coffee shop in 16 hours and have now watched this 6 times this week. I watched this video when it came out and am so glad I remembered it’s existence
I feel you somehow.. If I can get my latte heart on point at home, I would consider to work in a coffee shop that uses locally roasted coffee or a roaster.
Hey there! I was a partner with Starbucks for 2 years and some change before transitioning out to work at a small family business in my home town. It can be done! Also the fact that you've worked for Starbucks shouldn't be something to shy away from; if you can handle that working environment, you can manage at *any* specialty cafe. Starbucks is crazy busy all the time, not to mention the stringent cleaning standards and ridiculous drink recipes... Working where I do know is way, way easier.
@@Boodieman72 its not really. They have nearly every traditional espresso drink available, and any that are missing (excluding espresso tonic) can be made after a short conversation with a barista. They've *also* got a more... inspired menu when it comes to sugary variants on the classics, I.E. lattes, cold brew, iced coffee, you know. But Fraps? No. Those aren't coffee, those are dessert. I don't think blended beverages really bring anything to the table, specialty coffee or otherwise. I see it as a completely different medium; if you're blending it, it isn't coffee anymore. 😅
@@jasmintea8825 you can ween yourself on to coffee by starting with heavily flavoured drinks, then gradually stripping back on the flavourings. It's worth it lol
I hate the taste of coffee (yes, I’ve tried many kinds of coffee drinks) and I’m super sensitive to caffeine so I can’t drink coffee. I wish I could though because I love the vibe of just chilling and sipping on a cup of coffee. I try to replicate this in the evening with herbal tea lol.
I really wish more people would see this video. Back when I was a barista, I got orders such as a flat white with the milk separate, when they actually wanted an Americano and then wondered where the rest of their coffee was; and a customer who was adamant he wanted a cappuccino with no forth and would not accept that this was a latte, yet was very happy when I just made him a latte and sprinkled some cocoa on top.
It's a mix, some people really do just want very strange things, other times they just have no clue what they're getting. Several people have complained that a machiatto was tiny and they expected a full drink (presumably they bought it because it was cheaper or it sounded cooler). An americano with no water and steamed milk (maybe trying to game the price, maybe just clueless). A latte with chocolate but *not* a mocha.
@@hunterm9 And you can never tell which is which until they get the drink and either look satisfied or confused. And you cannot insult them by asking, 'Is that *really* what you want?'
They’re probably confused about the macchiato because starbucks sells full sized (like a normal cup) macchiatos. I remember I went to Peet’s Coffee once and ordered a macchiato and the barista said “just so you know, macchiatos are actually tiny, Starbucks makes them different”. And I legitimately had no idea up until that point.
Just thought I’d leave this here as a suggestion. It looks like your chocolate powder, cinnamon and nutmeg are coming out of your shakers very slowly. If you add caster sugar (in a 1:1 ratio or less) into a container and mix it up then put it in your shakers it will break up the bigger clumps of chocolate powder that are clogging up your shakers. I find it helps heaps during rush hour and improves efficiency heaps. (Hope that all made sense). Love your videos tho 👌👌
Wouldn't that dilute the amount of chocolate or cinnamon powder coming out? So essentially you're adding cinnamon sugar instead of just cinnamon. It makes sense, but some people don't want added sugar.
That’s true. Some shakers have finer meshes tho so the sugar might not pass through. Larger things like rice also work if you don’t want the sugar. Sugar is just what my cafe uses.
Also tapping the side with the index and/or middle finger of the hand holding the shaker makes an easier and more even shake with more control. Might take a little practice, but it works with spices when cooking too!
OMG, I've just realized that "cortado" in the US means something completely different than here, in Argentina (and I think that I may include a lot of South American countries as well). If you ask for a "cortado" in Argentina, it will be almost all coffee with a little bit of milk. We call it that way cause you "cut" (cortado is "cutted in spanish) the coffee with a bit of milk. What you call "cortado" here it will be "café con Leche".
Interesting! In Spain, a cafe con leche is a latte! Slightly different to the one described here, it's steamed (and usually burnt lol) milk in a tall glass that's very wet (i.e. very little foam).
Cortado is always coffee with a little milk. Most speciality coffee shops ruined macchiatos and cortados because they add way too much milk to make latte art
Well, as a Barista in Colombia, we have, Cortado as a Espresso with a little bit of milk and a Latte Cortado, wich is literally de oposal, also exists with Macchiato, but, different proportions
This actually helps me a lot, I recently found this kinda hidden away coffee shop & i didn’t know what the order, this saves me from so many awkward situations I could get into.

I have never been a barista, but I spent several young years waiting tables. If I am ever struggling to decide what to order, I let the person behind me go first. I don't like to keep people waiting and I do not want to stress out the employee because I have been there.
A mocha was my first coffee drink too and it's the only coffee combination I drink unless there's some lavender or a mocha mint option. I love the hot coco comparison because when its cold I always think of if you combined chocolate milk with coffee, this is what you would get. Cold brew is magical for homemade iced coffee.

I always learned that a latte, without any changes like extra shots or whatever, was 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk, and a cappuccino was 1/3 espresso, ~1/3 steamed milk, and ~1/3 foam, more or less depending on how they order it, it seems like you guys just do a smaller latte? Like you said it definitely differs but I haven’t seen that version really! My parents owned a coffee shop and pretty much did that ratio. We would put a divider over the pitch we when pouring the steamed milk out to leave the foam which you put on top
Often latte will be served in a latte glass (~8oz), so it has a bit more milk because the volume is larger than the ceramic cup (~6oz). So, you're right, their latte seems a bit smaller than normal. I would imagine some guests would find their latte strong if they are using 2oz coffee in the ceramic cup. Edit: Just wanted to say this lady making the coffee though is a pro! Especially her reminding everyone that there's no wrong way to do it. So many "experts" on RUclips trying to overcomplicate when they don't even understand the basics.
this was amazing. i honestly didn't know that most of these drinks were relatively tue same with varying amounts of milk. this honestly makes ordering coffee less intimidating. thank you.
Oh! My first ever barista made coffee was also a Mocha but it was a White Chocolate Mocha and still love it. I don't get it often as my usual order now is an Americano with a bit of double cream or Flat White (very similar to Cortado). I've worked as a barista for nearly 7 years before my maternity leave and I truly miss making coffee. Love your video, thanks for the nostalgia. ❤️ Love from Czech Republic 🇨🇿🖤☕️
I used to work at a small cafe for 6 months and this video sums up all my barista knowledge. Thank you you introducing the macchiato in a tiny cup as it should be. The number of customers who were mad at me, not knowing it was this small, was astronomical. Question for a Starbucks Barrista: Why your macchiato are so big? Is it just a latte with the macchiato etiquette?
yeah the starbucks macchiato is just a backwards latte. it's a pretty drink at least? i just started drinking coffee a year ago but i would like to try a traditional macchiato, they sound lovely. i just don't go to "real" cafés enough lol
The first time I went to a Starbucks (10+ years ago) I was so nervous and just ordered the first thing I saw. Turns out I ordered a cup of steamed milk. JUST STEAMED MILK! For a while I wondered why no one questioned my order but years later I now understand that people order the most random things, at coffeeshops.
Yup what she had for a cappuccino was definitely an Aussie flat white, Aussie cappuccinos are usually thicker and more textured than what she had. we also have a different style for the hot late milk too
That is what I was taught as well. Flat white are traditionally from Australia with foam less than a cappuccino. We also make american "macchiatos" with thicker foam and then cappuccinos that are pretty much all foam and seen as more of a dessert. But eh. Its coffee.
Towkeeyoh yeah I’d nearly always consider either the Australian or Italian terms and beverages the standard as they’re both the best and most fleshed out in the world
Thank you for this! I usually just get a latte or cappuccino because half the other drinks are a mystery to me 😅. I might have to experiment whenever I can get to a cafe next
cold brew actually has less caffeine than regular coffee, chemically hot water is required to leech the most caffeine from the coffee bean, therefore cold brew has more flavor but not more caffeine. it does still have some, however it will not have nearly as much as hot brewed coffees/espressos. this correlation can be seen in how an espresso shot has as much caffeine as a cup of coffee even though it is smaller, because it is brewed/pushed through the coffee grounds at a high temperature (steam). great video overall and i loved learning about other types of coffee i didn’t know such as americano! i feel like people who order americanos are always very suave, lol.
As someone whos never enjoyed coffee flavor and always resorts to ordering hot coco this video has shown me nothing but fancy rotating drinks that are also very pretty to look at
@@smiley8117 Yeah "chai tea" would be "tea tea" and that sounds funny xD As a matter of fact "chai" is also the word that Russians use for tea as well :D
videos like this seriously make me wanna cry because i get so anxious about visiting new coffee shops (ive only ever regularly been to starbucks) so having such a clear guide is just 🥺🤟🏻💕
Most baristas don’t recommend an espresso over ice just because it “shocks” the espresso, and doesn’t taste all that great. I highly recommend an iced Americano! You can ask to add just a little water - by adding the espresso to a little bit of water, and then putting it over ice, it keeps the integrity of the espresso a lot better. But hey, maybe you’ll like it just right over ice! It’s always nice to experiment, especially when drinking different types of espresso/going to different shops.
Wow thanks for this usually when I'm in a coffee shop in England I take like 3 mins to chosse when I'm at the till sit hanks for the help keep up the great work
I don’t really like coffee but lord I love making latte art and other pretty drinks for other people. One of the joys in coffee making, I think, is seeing other people enjoy your creations. + my latte art is still not that good, but it’s getting better ! I’m considering working at a cafe at some point, as a part time job
I've only gone to an actual Cafe once, and it was a few weeks ago. Ended up drinking 1.5 iced mochas because my mom didn't finish hers. It was delicious. Other than that I only go to Starbucks sometimes, because its expensive and I have no money. When I do go, I get a Peppermint Mocha in the winter, and a Matcha Frappuccino with White Mocha and Hazelnut any other time. Its my all time favorite drink lol
This video was actually very helpful for me, as a brand new barista! (I've worked as one for 3 days now, and I'm currently trying to learn about all our drinks and how to make them.) 😊
@@durkadur27 How else do you think you're supposed to start? It's not like there's a college/high school program for baristas. Where I live, and in my shop, they train new baristas in both real and made up situations, and walk them through all the steps. But everyone has different ways of learning. I learn best by doing and observing, but watching videos like this is helpful too.
It’s probably appropriate to say that knowing how to order any food or drink pays homage to the culture it hails from. It’s easy to forget that modern coffee shops owe it all to their Italian roots since coffee is so big in western society. So making sure you know how to order not only makes for a better culinary experience but also pays respect to the culture behind it.
I was hoping to get you take on just what in the world a "Flatte White" is lol. I was taught to make it as a latte but barely stretching the milk so that the crema of the espresso stays more intact?? I've gotten a ton of different answers from basically every other barista I've talked to, would love to get your take!
2:45 This is double the size you would get, if ordering this in an italian Café in Germany. Never been to Italy, but they have a whole different coffee culture. So ..that would be a whole new video....which I wouldn't mind btw😉 And...the little glasses with water: in Germany this is ONLY and ever tap water. NO sparkly water ever!! And for good reason, if you ask me... like you said. It's for balance. And sparkly water has acid. Enjoyed this video very much! Love to learn about the difference from country to country. Thank you! Now I am prepared to what I need to look out for in the US 👍
I know very little about coffee, so this video was very helpful. I’ve always ordered a mocha because 9/10 times I know it’s gonna already be sweet and milky when I receive it, so I won’t need to add any extras to it, and it’s a universally known coffee at every coffee shop. I’ve always felt this was cheating and taking the easy way out, but hearing you say it’s your favorite makes me feel way better about ordering my mochas! 😋
Aussie and kiwi. We can share it. We definitely had it first (melb coffee from Italian immigrant community > coffee culture today) but kiwis picked it up fast because they have the same excellent taste as Aussies 👍🏻
Great video, I am still quite new to coffee drinking and get a bit puzzled when ordering. I do sometimes ask the baristas advice and that always works out well.
Yeah, I’m in Canada and flat whites aren’t super popular here. Usually the crowd that orders them are travelling in from Europe/Australia or are looking for the Starbucks version of the flat white.
As a New Zealander they’re my go-to but I’ve had them in the USA and Canada and they were not good 😩 I’m sure there’s cafes and baristas that can do them well all over the world, but the best one I’ve had overseas was made by an Australian barista in Canada 😅
This is so helpful! Every coffee place needs this video to help us who don't know the specifics. I'm a mocha person but trying to find a keto version of it. Now I know why the Americano isn't as rich as I like.
For the Americano: in that order would be a long black no? Americano would be first espresso shot then water? I mean it's almost the same thing 😅 but you know 😂
Very helpful, I always feel out of place when at new coffee shops and have a hard time trying new things. I appreciate this video, now I feel more confident trying new types of coffee.
Mines is an Iced Hazelnut Latte with almond milk, and if there's a place that has Oat milk, I'll have it with that. With a couple packets of stevia, ranging from two to four depending on how sweet the drink is.
People have trouble deciding is exactly why every food/drink/coffee place should upload their entire menu and the prices online. They got unlimited time to decide and research on the menu. It helps me so much to order when I already decided on what to get beforehand.
I usually get a caramel macchiato at Starbucks and I had NO idea it wasn’t anywhere near a real macchiato! I cant wait to go to my local coffee shop and try a real one~ thank you for educating me Morgan😂!
I went to starbucks once before knowing the difference of cappuccino and Frappuccino and ordered a cappuccino I was slightly disappointed but didn’t wanna say anything
Starbucks barista here - that happens at least a few times a week on drive-thru - it's why whenever anyone says cappuccino I repeat the question in disbelief, then repeat again while explaining the difference, and more often than not the milkshake is what the costumers wanted.
i started learning about coffee because i like two blocks from a starbucks so i thought it would be good to try and get a job there when i finnished school- turns out it took learning about being a barista to never wanna work at starbucks at all lmao, now i’m appreciating specialty coffee so much more :)
Well, thats the guide for coffee beginners. Terms are quite difficult to digests so i assume mild, medium & strong category might helped more. First coffee experience is always a bitter. It takes time to develop a taste. I always recommend to go with latte with vanilla flavor for first time coffee drinker.
*hears the setup part* As someone who literally went to Starbucks with a friend and had to resort to "Like him!" in order not to BSOD, I appreciate this video x)
My favourites still are just a normal cup of freshly made coffee, a good balanced espresso, a coretto (stands and falls with both, the espresso and the grappa), Zwätschgelutz (roughly 2-4cl of prune-schnaps in a glass, add water to the top, put in so little instant coffee that you can read a news paper and also 2 sugar cubes, only drank in Switzerland as far as i know) and the lumumba (hot chocolate with whipped cream and rum, not coffee, but there was chai in the video aswell). Highly recommend testing some of these.
This is why I like coffee culture in Australia/New Zealand.. and I hear this has made it's way to the UK as well.. all I say when I go to a café is "flat white".. it means I want a coffee with milk, but without too much foam.. easy as lol
I miss going to the hotel restaurant in my city and enjoying a coffee while working on my laptop, listening to classical music and hearing the people around me talk quietly in the back. I just miss coffee shops, sitting there.

Edit: Just wanted to say this lady making the coffee though is a pro! Especially her reminding everyone that there's no wrong way to do it. So many "experts" on RUclips trying to overcomplicate when they don't even understand the basics.
as someone who doesn't know anything about coffee drinks but loves coffee, i appreciate this video more than words can say
this was amazing. i honestly didn't know that most of these drinks were relatively tue same with varying amounts of milk. this honestly makes ordering coffee less intimidating. thank you.
Thanks, Morgan. This is my favorite video summary of modern craft coffee drinks. You really nailed it.
Love from Czech Republic 🇨🇿🖤☕️
This is what 2020 needed 😍 slowly healing the world Morgan lol
The first time I went to a Starbucks (10+ years ago) I was so nervous and just ordered the first thing I saw. Turns out I ordered a cup of steamed milk. JUST STEAMED MILK! For a while I wondered why no one questioned my order but years later I now understand that people order the most random things, at coffeeshops.
Me, an Australian: Ok, but a thin layer of foam is absolutely a flat white, and cappuccinos are always served with choc powder hahaha
But eh. Its coffee.
She also called a long black and Americano????
@@cameltoejoe98 yea the coffee world really doesn't have a consistent standard
Towkeeyoh yeah I’d nearly always consider either the Australian or Italian terms and beverages the standard as they’re both the best and most fleshed out in the world
I admire your methods and creativity in spreading coffee culture and coffee knowledge, you are a superstar in my mind
Some years ago my mate ordered an espresso along with a big, dry, muffin. He struggled with both 😂
Hilarious 🤣🤣

Your voice and enthusiasm is delightful for these kinds of videos!
videos like this seriously make me wanna cry because i get so anxious about visiting new coffee shops (ive only ever regularly been to starbucks) so having such a clear guide is just 🥺🤟🏻💕
Something about her voice is just so calming and bright(?) idk but i did my homework while listening to this and i feel exceptionally calm wow
Morgan: "all of the thing's I've mentioned can be iced"
Me: I wonder what an iced espresso would taste like :P
Delicious actually. You'll just wanna add sugar probably
I usually have one if I need a quick pick me up before a rush. I'd recommend maybe a pump of chocolate though if you want to sip and enjoy though
Jake Stockstill mocha makes everything better in my humble opinion. lol
these comments are conflicting
This video is so chill, and kind, and lovely, and open. I’m gonna cry idk why but this made my day lol thank you.
Just say "Dopio", pound it, and do 20 'shups on the floor
Hahaha
LOL
I have seen tons of vids about coffee drinks and the sizes and measures but yours made everything so easy, thanks
i have adhd and this kept my attention the entire time, do u guys have any suggestions on videos like this?

I've only gone to an actual Cafe once, and it was a few weeks ago. Ended up drinking 1.5 iced mochas because my mom didn't finish hers. It was delicious. Other than that I only go to Starbucks sometimes, because its expensive and I have no money. When I do go, I get a Peppermint Mocha in the winter, and a Matcha Frappuccino with White Mocha and Hazelnut any other time. Its my all time favorite drink lol
Every time I go to my local cafe, I just tell the barista "surprise me"
This video was actually very helpful for me, as a brand new barista!
(I've worked as one for 3 days now, and I'm currently trying to learn about all our drinks and how to make them.) 😊
Barista jobs must be really ez to get now if you can walk in with no experience and score.
@@tomtenisse823 I agree but where I'm from they do have schooling.
@@durkadur27 Okay, interesting! Is that some kind of high school program or what is it? :)
@@tomtenisse823 Things like the Seattle Barista Academy & American Barista & Coffee Workshops. Not needed I guess but would help getting work.
When you pulled out the Americano I was like "what!? is it just hot water?" then you pulled out the other stuff and I felt stupid lol
In depth Coffee knowledge and incredibly encouraging, soothing voice- this video has it ALL!
You are so so so ADORABLE!! a Chanel devoted to coffee? HECK YEAH!!!
2:45 This is double the size you would get, if ordering this in an italian Café in Germany. Never been to Italy, but they have a whole different coffee culture. So ..that would be a whole new video....which I wouldn't mind btw😉
And...the little glasses with water: in Germany this is ONLY and ever tap water. NO sparkly water ever!! And for good reason, if you ask me... like you said. It's for balance. And sparkly water has acid.
Enjoyed this video very much! Love to learn about the difference from country to country. Thank you! Now I am prepared to what I need to look out for in the US 👍
when she brought out that cappuccino, i swear to god i smelled freshly brewed coffee for a split second before the sensation was gone
Where’s the flat white, the quintessential kiwi coffee?
It’s Australian???
Aussie and kiwi. We can share it. We definitely had it first (melb coffee from Italian immigrant community > coffee culture today) but kiwis picked it up fast because they have the same excellent taste as Aussies 👍🏻
Its just a small latte with double shot :)
what is flat white, piccolo called in the rest of world? How about affagato..
@@tubbyisnofatty and South Africa 👀
Great video, I am still quite new to coffee drinking and get a bit puzzled when ordering. I do sometimes ask the baristas advice and that always works out well.
We almost had an episode of MorganSpillsCoffee here
I have never seen such consistently good latte art - wow!
No flat white? Maybe it's not as common in the US
Yeah, I’m in Canada and flat whites aren’t super popular here.
@@PhoebeGrigor Australian coffee culture is fantastic so I'm not surprised. Would love to have the chance to travel there one day

Americano best coffeedrink for me
This is so helpful! Every coffee place needs this video to help us who don't know the specifics. I'm a mocha person but trying to find a keto version of it. Now I know why the Americano isn't as rich as I like.
I'm an exmormon and coffee has always been so confusing since I didn't grow up with it, thank you for making this!!!
I love this! Easy, light, insightful. Glad to have you back
For the Americano: in that order would be a long black no? Americano would be first espresso shot then water?
I mean it's almost the same thing 😅 but you know 😂
Very helpful, I always feel out of place when at new coffee shops and have a hard time trying new things. I appreciate this video, now I feel more confident trying new types of coffee.
My favorite order "One of everything please" At least for the purposes of this video.
Beautifully well done vid right here. Thank you. My days of disappointing the folks I cherish most are now over.
My go to is always an Iced Caramel Latte.
That one's really good!
Mines is an Iced Hazelnut Latte with almond milk, and if there's a place that has Oat milk, I'll have it with that. With a couple packets of stevia, ranging from two to four depending on how sweet the drink is.
My anxiety when Graham went to open the door with the same hand he had the drink in:📈
People have trouble deciding is exactly why every food/drink/coffee place should upload their entire menu and the prices online. They got unlimited time to decide and research on the menu.
It helps me so much to order when I already decided on what to get beforehand.
For the fellow introverts 😌
I usually get a caramel macchiato at Starbucks and I had NO idea it wasn’t anywhere near a real macchiato! I cant wait to go to my local coffee shop and try a real one~ thank you for educating me Morgan😂!
I’m a barista and I always have to say to customers that our macchiatos are traditional, not the bs that Starbucks has invented😂
Where is my flat white 😣
even though i have knowledge about most of these drinks i continue watching cause it’s so calming 🥺
I went to starbucks once before knowing the difference of cappuccino and Frappuccino and ordered a cappuccino I was slightly disappointed but didn’t wanna say anything
Starbucks barista here - that happens at least a few times a week on drive-thru - it's why whenever anyone says cappuccino I repeat the question in disbelief, then repeat again while explaining the difference, and more often than not the milkshake is what the costumers wanted.
i started learning about coffee because i like two blocks from a starbucks so i thought it would be good to try and get a job there when i finnished school- turns out it took learning about being a barista to never wanna work at starbucks at all lmao, now i’m appreciating specialty coffee so much more :)
never actually paid attention to how SMALL your shop is
Well, thats the guide for coffee beginners. Terms are quite difficult to digests so i assume mild, medium & strong category might helped more. First coffee experience is always a bitter. It takes time to develop a taste. I always recommend to go with latte with vanilla flavor for first time coffee drinker.
I was ordering latte and cappuccino for 3 years of high school to not look like a feeak or be annoying to the barista.

As someone who literally went to Starbucks with a friend and had to resort to "Like him!" in order not to BSOD, I appreciate this video x)
0:41 Me: No don't ruin the art!
“Coffee please”.
This is why I like coffee culture in Australia/New Zealand.. and I hear this has made it's way to the UK as well.. all I say when I go to a café is "flat white".. it means I want a coffee with milk, but without too much foam.. easy as lol
* cries in Italian looking at the cappuccino *
But I love your videos anyway ❤
